NPSGUpon Eragon's answer, the lawman's expression turned to thankful seriousness - although there was a moment where he looked so relieved he might faint. "Thank the gods! I think I should give you a bit of information on the tower before we head out there... yes, yes... well, the place has been abandoned for over four years and it's said a mage once owned it and lived there. But no one has ever entered it because it's said the tower is still protected by magical traps. Lately, though, strange lights have been seen in the topmost floor of the tower, and pets have gone missing nearby. It's only been a few weeks since it started, but it has the town on edge." He took a final sip of the ale that he had ordered, smiled and stood.

"Once again, you have my thanks...oh, and by the way, what should I call you, stranger? I am Constable Cranton." Not bothering to wait for Eragon's reply, he continued on, "Well, I should probably show you where the tower is, then." He motioned for Eragon to follow as he walked towards the door. "Ollie, put his drink on my tab." he called back to the barkeep.

Constable Cranton led Eragon down the street past many buildings holding various shops, and many people out and about taking care of their daily routines. Some of the people looked at Eragon as he passed, and the looks they gave ranged from approval to fear to smug contempt.

The walk wasn't far; Eragon judged it to be less than a mile. He came to an area where the trees had started to encroach on the town. Eragon walked amongst them just a bit and saw through the canopy a short three story tower up ahead. It had a wall around it and a gate that showed some signs of rust and age. Both constable and adventurer continued up to the gate, which was open, and the constable pointed.

"There it is. The day still has a long way to go, so hopefully you'll be done before the sun sets."

Eragon looked up and saw that the sun was indeed high in the sky, almost straight overhead. Yes, he would have many hours of daylight left.

The constable offered his hand and said simply, "Good luck."

oocFor your next post, let's practice using fieldsets to tidy it up a bit. Use {fieldset=Eragon}Body of post{/fieldset} to isolate and highlight your in-character post. Then, after that, copy your action and stat blocks. Easiest way to do that is to edit the post they were in and then copy and paste it over to your new post. Give it a shot. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. And if it doesn't go perfectly, no biggie. We're here to practice and learn after all.

"thank you, and I hope I shall not need it." Eragon said grimly, shaking the constable's hand. He approached the door of the tower, and scanned the frame and door carefully with his keen eyes.

NPSGEragon passed through the rusted gate and saw that the overgrown grounds look to have been at one time a beautiful place. It now seemed ominous to any that had not spent time in the wild and seen what plants that are untended can do. Weeds filled old flower beds, and grass grew up through flagstone walkways.

The afternoon sun shone down on Eragon, and his shadow was practically nonexistent as he surveyed his surroundings. The air was fragrant with the scent of fresh herbs, and Eragon could hear the normal sounds of insects as they went about their business. The one thing Eragon didn't notice anywhere was small animals of any kind. Eragon figured that at the very least he might see a mouse or even a rat, but there was nothing. It struck him as odd, but he pushed it from his mind as he approached the short, squat tower.

There was but a single door, and it was covered by a slight overhang. It was made of some kind of thick, solid-looking wood, with a lock that appeared to be more ornate than functional. There appeared to be a few scratch marks on the door around the handle, but it otherwise seemed ordinary in every way. There was a single window in the top floor of the tower, round in shape with glass cut to fit it. Shutters on either side protected it from particularly bad weather. Eragon had to admit that it looked to be just a plain, ordinary, ugly tower.

Eragon approached the door, and began to examine around it. Almost immediately, Eragon noticed two things; the first of which is that there were scratches about the handle - the mark of an amateur lockpick - and the second was that it wasn't actually caught on the lock. Whomever had picked this lock hadn't closed the door all the way on their way out - or more pessimistically, on the way in.

oocGood job with the fieldset and copying your stat block over. Let's make one more modification and wrap your ooc section containing the action and stat blocks in a spoilerbutton. Just use {spoilerbutton=ooc} at the beginning and {/spoilerbutton} at the end.

Eragon
Eragon enters tentatively, keeping his eyes peeled for any movement. He surveys the room, making completely sure he is alone.

NPSGThe door opened easily, the ancient hinges making only a minimum of fuss. Sunlight streamed in around Eragon's body and illuminated the room somewhat.

Eragon peered in and saw that the room was furnished for the reception of visitors. There were several sofas and chairs, a few side tables and what looked to be a rug made from the fur of some large animal. The furnishings appeared to be in fairly good shape despite the years of neglect, though there was a large spider web spanning from the group of chairs along the wall up into the ceiling, disappearing into the shadows above. The spider that made it must have been very large indeed.

The wall opposite the door had a set of stairs that curved along the back wall and disappeared behind a wall. These stairs appeared to be the only way out of the room other than the door Eragon had just opened.

Eragon had taken but a few steps into the room before a musty smell assaulted his nose. A small set of footprints caught his attention briefly and then he thought he heard something.

Wary, Eragon froze and looked about. Out the corner of his eye he caught movement up above, from the direction of the web. A large thing of some kind was now hurtling through the air toward the stalwart adventurer.

ooc Good job rolling perception without prompting. That helps games in play by postpbp move faster. Please roll initiative! If you beat a 4, you can act first. We'll say Eragon is at F4 and the spider is descending from the ceiling at E2.

Eragon
Eragon yelps in surprise, throwing his hands in front of his face and attempting to move out of the way of the speeding beast. As he moves, he traces an arcane sigil in the air, pulling a pinch of sulphur from his component pouch and hurling it, now a mote of arcane fire, toward the spider.

NPSG With a yelp, Eragon retreated away from the descending spider, a five foot long monster of an arachnid. The wizard send a bolt of fire at his enemy but in his haste, his spell missed its mark. Landing on the ground, the spider lurched at Eragon, fangs clacking together as it lunged at its next meal. The halfling, however, was quick enough to avoid being punctured by the fangs that in his hands would have served as long daggers. The foes were now in melee and Eragon was in a fight for his life.

ooc Let's add a twist to your next attack roll (if that's what you do this round). The spider's AC is 14. So, if you make an attack roll, you can use this code {dice=attack}1d20+6sch14{/dice} and you'll get either a green check for a hit or a red x for a miss. If you want to use a spell or ability that doesn't require an attack roll, we'll worry about fluffing the dice code another time.

Eragon
" Dammit, stand still you furry terror!" Eragon shouts as he flings another arc of white flame at the spider.
