Basic 5e Character Creation Question
I'm down to really only one thing left - the final stats: Point buy: 27pts Do I go human (after +1 adjustment): Human: Stats: Str: 10 Dex: 16 Con: 12 Int: 10 Wis: 16 Cha: 12 +1pt Or VHuman (after +1 dex/+1wis adj): VHuman: Stats: Str: 10 Dex: 16 Con: 12 Int: 10 Wis: 15 Cha: 10 +1pt Feat: Either Mobile or Observant Prof: Something-or-other useful. Because it's my first 5e game I'm getting analysis paralysis over a couple of minor things and it is quite frustrating. Any advice either mechanically or about 5e in general for how to make this decision would be helpful.

Feats are fun. And you don't get many. Go for variant human.
And get the Perception skill if you can. |

As good an argument as any. Thanks zev.

I don't think it matters much. D&D 5e is much less prone to min/maxing than are previous versions. You can't go wrong with any of these builds.

You are right- but I still see people who make pretty bad characters mechanically. I am not sure why the OP wants to go R-3/Mk-1 but that's neither here nor there: You're the rogue.... outside of combat one of your main functions is making sure the party is not damaged by traps... Secondly as a monk, you need the high wisdom anyway. So I'd go w/the variant human and observant (adding the extra +1 to WIS) so you end up with 16 DEX/ WIS 16... though STR is unnecessary for a monk... I'd start with S8 D15 Co14 I 10 W15 Ch8 +1D/W and observant giving you: S8 D16 Co14 I 10 W17 Ch8 As soon as you turn lvl 4 rogue, Id then take Resilient(WIS) bringing the WIS to 18... WIS Saves is arguably the most important saves and having prof bonus there can save you're bacon. Last edited by Landsknechts; Jan 23rd, 2018 at 09:08 PM. |

I agree with Zev BTW... not only get the perception skill but that should be one of your expertise skills taken at lvl 1.
18 WIS with Observant and expertise is passive perception 25 as soon as you hit level 5. Last edited by Landsknechts; Jan 23rd, 2018 at 09:12 PM. |
