Untamed: Secrets of the Amedio Jungle

Untamed: Secrets of the Amedio Jungle

Theme and FlavorJungle Adventures. Lost ruins, dangerous enemies, even more dangerous traps.

The Hook
left-aligned image
In the southwestern Flanaess, on the continent of Oerik, lies a vast, sprawling jungle known as the Amedio. A vast and mostly unexplored region, it sits between the peaks of the Hellfire Furnaces to the west and the Azure Sea to the east, the Jeklea Bay to the north and the Isles of Axuxal, with its own feared Isle of Dread, to the south.

There are many ports, cities and villages that have taken up hold in the jungle, most of them along the coast or nearest the mountains. Somehow, some villages and smaller settlements have been able to establish themselves deeper into the jungle, along rivers and crudely made footpaths where men have finally dared to tread. But all are not safe, for the jungle has a way of creeping into every crack, every crevice, every niche that it can find and retake the lands that civilized folk have tried to claim.

Rumors abound of jungle natives, peoples yet unknown, that have lived in the jungle for generations. Tales of strange languages, all but forgotten to time, heard spoken through the canopy as explorers try to make their way deeper into the forest. Sights and sounds that haven’t been heard by educated ears for a life-age, still whispered and creaking, waiting to be found. Legends and myths of ancient temples and ruins where forgotten people still hold their daily rituals.

This land, this jungle, is still largely untamed. Who knows what one may find deep in its interior, away from the light of the noon-day sun, hidden from prying eyes. Are there any who would dare to enter the Amedio Jungle?

The Game
right-aligned image
As I am quite sure you have guessed, you are those who would dare to enter the Amedio Jungle. Within you lies the power and ability to trek into the jungle, cut your way through trees and vines and overgrowth, find the lost temples and ruins and relics, and bring back the tales of your adventures to civilization. And here you are, having answered the call.

I have a series of semi-related adventures that I’ve been sitting on for {amount of time redacted}, and I have really wanted to run several of these that entire time. Alas, and though I have tried with several of these, none of them have gotten very far, mostly due to the RL groups I tried them with simply fizzling out.

Before we get into the gory details of what this is and what I hope to accomplish, let’s set some ground rules. Sort of and introduction to who I am, and what you can expect from me. To start, I’m krossingkhory. My personal pronouns are he, him, they, them, you, that guy, dude, you there…pretty much anything. I’m fairly easy-going, and I try to not let too much bother me. I am new around here, but don’t let me noobness on the site mislead you; I’ve been gaming since the original D&D cartoon was in first run on Saturday mornings. Yes, I’m old. But I love to game, and with no RL group any longer, well, here I am.

I want this game to be a long-term campaign. Heroes start small, take on adventures, get bigger, take on bigger adventures, rinse-and-repeat. And as I stated above, I’ve got a series of adventures that are somewhat related to each other, mostly by being contained within the same geographic region of Greyhawk – the Amedio Jungle. They aren’t truly interconnected to one another, so events from one aren’t indicated or mentioned in the others. But you’ll have the chance, I hope, to influence that.

I like games that move. Even if they are moving glacially, I like it when they move. When players and GM alike work together to keep the story flowing, to keep the action happening, to keep the game moving. Games that don’t move end up dying, and none of us wants to see that. A recent game that I applied to here on the site had a GM who said, and I directly quote:

Quote:
I'm also a big believer in the importance of momentum in a game. Posts beget posts beget posts. Slow responses beget slow responses beget dead games.
I like what he said there, and I am going to lift that for this game here. The more the players post, the more I will post, the more the game will move on. Which is what we all want out of any game that we play, right? Right!

I am going to shoot for two posts per week. Whether that ends up being a novella or two sentences, that is the goal for the post rate. I know that things happen, and sometimes you don’t have anything to really add to the current scene. But a simple post like “Herman, with nothing to really add, asks the rest of the group ‘Hey, are we ready to get moving here?’” can go a LONG way. This kind of feeds into…

…communicating with one another. Me with you, you with me, you with each other. All of us talking about the game, what is happening, what the options are. The same GM I quoted above mentioned this in his advertisement, and I’m lifting that too. Gee, am I turning into a thief here? Gosh, I hope that’s ok. Anyhow, we all need to talk. Ask questions, make sure I’m paying attention, poke each other to get moving. If we do that, I think we’ll all enjoy this a whole lot more.

Now, with all that said, let’s dive into…

ApplicationI’m going to lay out some rules that will be used for creating characters for this game, as well as what I’d like to see in your application. I read somewhere in one of the “you’re new here” threads that no dice should be rolled in the advertisement, so please avoid doing that here. Anyhow, on to the rules!

Game System
Dungeons and Dragons 5E. Should be self-explanatory based on the tag for the thread title, but you never know! Let’s be clear about this up front.

Allowed Material
Almost anything official for this system. To be clear, Unearthed Arcana is NOT considered to be official for the purposes of this game. There are a few things that I will not allow, primarily because I don’t think it would be a good fit for the game. Please see the FAQ below for a (somewhat) complete list of stuff that is not allowed for this game.

Races
Any/all from any allowed material.

All races, regardless of where you pulled them from, will use the rules found in Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse for applying racial bonuses. To be clear, this is +2 to one attribute and +1 to another, or +1 to 3 different attributes.

All races, regardless of where you pulled them from, will use the rules found in Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse for determining starting languages. To be clear, this is Common and then your racial language. As Humans do not have a racial language, you are free to choose one that suits you.

To make sure we are all on the same page, we are using Variant Humans.

To make sure we are all on the same page, we are NOT using the rules for Custom Lineages.

Classes/Subclasses
Any/all from any allowed material.

Starting Level
3rd. Let the partying and rejoicing begin!

Attributes
We will be rolling. 4d4+2. What? Where did that come from? See, I’m tired of seeing 3d6, or 4d6 keep the highest 3 (or reroll 1s). All those may be tried and true, but I grow tired of using the same old thing. So let’s try something new out, shall we?

Hit Points
Maximum at 1st level, roll or take the average at 2nd and 3rd. You may absolutely roll first and then choose whether to take the roll or the average.

Starting Equipment
To begin, you get whatever equipment, sans gold, from your Class and Background for 1st level. In addition to this, you receive 200 gold pieces to purchase whatever other equipment you wish to have. Yes, you may sell starting equipment to get more gold to purchase equipment.

Characters have the option of taking either:
  • 1 potion of healing and 1 other Common magic item; OR
  • 1 Uncommon magic item

If the Common magic item chosen is a spell scroll, it contains either 2 1st level spells OR 1 2nd level spell.

Backgrounds
Again, any/all from the allowed material. I’d like to avoid using custom backgrounds please.

And now for the important piece of all of this: the actual application. In your application, I would like to see all of the following:

Name:
Race:
Class:
Subclass:
Mechanical Background:
Appearance & Personality: You must include an image here in addition to a written appearance.
Written Background: No length limit or requirement on this, but if you're going to make it a book, make it a good one.
30 Minute (or less) RP Sample: The very few games I’ve applied to have had this included, and I like this. I think this helps get into the spirit of the character, of the game, and helps to build something that we can all get behind to keep the game moving. So please, provide a writing sample in-character.

Application Part 2Wait, there’s a part 2? Did I fail to mention something above and now have to edit it in here to make it look like I did this intentionally? Am I simply losing my mind?
Yes. No. Maybe. In that order.

About a week or so out from selecting the group/players/characters/victims, I will ask those of you who have completed characters to provide a list of 4-6 other characters that you think your character would play nice with in this game. In secret, of course. Again, this is something I saw in another game, I believe this creates group cohesion and leads to having a boatload of fun.

Although I am doing this approximately 1 week before selections, if you feel the need to get started on this before then, go ahead and do so!

Additional InformationMore information? Like, how much stuff do I have to say in this ad? A lot, apparently.
  • Accepted Players: 4-6 players.
  • Posting Rate: 2 per week.
  • Starting Level: 3, and we will be using the milestone system. That is, I’ll simply tell you when you level up.
  • Setting: The Amedio Jungle in the World of Greyhawk.

Application Deadline: I will be making decisions the morning of on Saturday, August 31.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: Should I apply to this game?
A: If you’ve made it this far and you answer “No”, I question your sanity.

Q: Will there be AI used in this game?
A: I will use as little AI as I possibly can. I am big on using images, and I will pull maps and images off the internet where they are needed. And to be fair, I will only use images and maps that are either free to use OR that I have paid for. Artists have to eat, too.

Q: Will you be balancing the party with skills/abilities/classes?
A: Nope. While class/skill/ability does play a small part in my selections, I won’t intentionally say “We need a fighter, a wizard, a thief…,” and so on. If we end up with 5 Halfling Sorcerers, so be it.

Q: Can I apply if I'm new?
A: I’m relatively new to the site, and I’m running this mess. So if you’re new, all I can say is “The water’s fine, so why don’t you join us?”.

Q: Will we have access to more setting information?
A: As soon as we get a game forum I will be putting up images, maps, important player handouts. You know, all the stuff you never knew you wanted and now cannot live without.

Q: Do you have a full list of books and such that aren't allowed?
A: I do.
  • Anything from Eberron
  • Anything from Strixhaven
  • The Reborn race from Van Richten's Guide.

Q: Can we pull magic items from the Book of Many Things for our Uncommon item?
A: Yes, but be aware that I will review things here on a case-by-case basis.

Q: Do the characters all know each other at the start of the game?
A: Yes. The opening of the game will see the characters already together and knowing each other.

Q: How will you handle material components with an actual cost?
A: Any spell that has a material component with an actual cost greater than 1 gold piece needs to have the component to cast the spell. Any component with a cost less than or equal to 1 gold piece is assumed to be in your component pouch or accounted for with the arcane focus.

Q: How are you going to handle Sorcerers with the Wild Magic origin?
A: Any time a Sorcerer with the Wild Magic origin casts a spell of 1st level or higher, or any time a Sorcerer with the Wild Magic origin uses an ability that can trigger surge, a d20 will need to be rolled to determine if surge happens or not (unless the ability or spell indicates that surge either cannot happen OR if the spell or ability indicates that surge always happens).

name sssatir
race lizardfolk
class warlock
subclass undying warlock(tiki jungle magic)
mechanical backgroundoutlander(guide)
Traits
I have lessons learned from nature and watching the beasts of nature and what they have to teach.
The softborns are still young and must be taught and learn about what history has taught our people. Their hasty actions are like pups getting themselves into trouble.

Ideals
We must move with the winds of change. Each season has its time. To refuse to move and change leads to extinction.
Bonds
I will bring terrible wrath down on the evildoers who destroyed my homeland.
Flaws
I remember every insult I've received and nurse a silent resentment toward anyone who's ever wronged me.

Appearance a lizardfolk with various bones covering its body. Trinkets of wood and stone littered throughout. A wooden staff shaped into a serpent like image in his hand. His scales green in color and hypnotizing like eyes.

personality a cold blooded killer with a fire inside. Patience is super important to sssatir as is his prejudice to warm blooded beings who he deems as ignorant and childish.

backstory deep within the heart of the jungles near amedio lies a cult of lizardfolk dedicated to the worship of the jungle its self. They see the spirits to the afterlife and act as conduits of the ancestors will.

Sssatir is one of the last of these members. When exploration began many softbodies ripped through the jungle to create homes from wood and lands of grain. Sssatir saught revenge upon those who had destroyed his home. He chose to find those who destroyed his home acting as a guide to the new visitors and a diplomat of the jungle assuring the new softbodies are to remain safe.

He watches and waits looking for a moment to strike at the leaders of these softbodies. A time will come when they will show themselves but for now he must guide the pups into learning to respect the jungle for what it is and the dangers that lurk within.
rp sample. "yes, yes, welcome, welcome it seems you've come to interview me. Have you not looked around were in the jungle. You dare ask anyone else? I mean even the foolish monkeys have their place but stay in your trees and hide your mellons. "

Sssatir flicks his tongue into the air before sliding in to have a seat. You notice the snake like staff that seems like a petrified snake but the longer you look you swear it moves with its head following your eyes.

"So tell me about yourself child. why have you come? You seek to build here? Have you asked the forest first? Surely your not foolish enough to think you might overpower your way into making baren land simply to destroy it." He flicks his tail and gives a toothy grin.

"Provide some coin and I shall show you how to survive within the woods. Look at the panther with how it hides within the shadows. The apes swinging through the trees nearly flying without wings. Have you seen our spiders there as big as your head. "

Takes the coin. "Yes, yes, I thought so. Let ssatir guide you gather your gear we have not time to rest. "

Application
left-aligned image

Name: Ciaran (Key-Run) Kinkaid
Race: Halfling
Class: Fighter
Subclass: Champion

The Entertainer : Juggler
Trait #1
I have a joke for any occasion, especially when humor is inappropriate
Trait #2
I tend to pocket things that might have some value
Ideal
Beauty - I enjoy seeing the smiles on the crowd's face ... Bringing joy to the world through my performance
Bond
Nothing is more important than my Circus Family. They are my Legacy and I theirs
Flaw
I tend to get bored easily, when are we going to just get on with it?

Appearance & Personality: Quick with a joke or disarming smile, Ciaran exudes the confidence that gives con-men their name... Though of course he would never abuse YOUR charity like that. Indeed it is much better to sit back, have a few drinks, and enjoy the show that is life. Rather than let worldly troubles weigh you down. The Halfing has a majestic long moustache that he has carefully cultivated throughout the years. And enjoys twirling it 'round his fingers when not otherwise engaged.

Written Background: From a young age, wherever Ciaran went he seemed to collect small trinkets. Shiny stones, bits of string, or an oddly shaped stick, would oftentimes find their way into his collection of pockets that adorned his clothing. The young boy enjoyed nothing more than to skip these stones on ponds, or see just how far that stick might fly if given enough oomph. As he grew and matured, his interests seemed to stall. Lagging behind the other children with these 'immature' tendencies. And after years of trying (and failing) to correct his undesirable behaviors, Ciaran's parents finally relented. Allowing the boy to explore his world by joining a travelling troupe of entertainers. While the lad showed a certain aptitude for music, it was the more physical aspects of the job, the tumblers and jugglers, that truly caught his imagination and set it to flight. Able to toss and catch any manner of items from midair, while flipping or contorting their bodies to snatch their targets. Ciaran was sure that there must have been some sort of magic being woven by their masterful hands and feet. Given the attention and encouragement that he had been so craving since early childhood; and after years of unknowingly preparing himself for it, he slowly became a master in his own right. Flittering his fingers between the veils of what was fanciful and what was real. Even though he is no longer traveling with The Silver Moon Circus, his love of adventure and penchant for finding things in his hands, has not left him. Holding his chosen family in his heart, Ciaran has gone in search of new adventure, new riches, and new friends to share his life with... If only for a time until he moves on again.

30 Minute (or less) RP Sample: Ciaran took a long deep breath in through his nostrils as he stepped down the gangplank and off of the ship that had brought him to the this rainforest jungle. The humidity was already playing havoc with his hair, and his shirt was sticking uncomfortably to both his skin, and armor. But the Halfling could smell something on the fresh Sea air... Adventure. The voyage itself had been full of excitement, with the possibility of monster, or pirate, waylaying their vessel at any moment. And with the cadre of mercenary folk looking for wealth and renown in the hidden places of the Amedio's vast expanses, it was hard to tell who would be friend, and who would be rival, once their feet had found dry land again. Now that they had arrived, he supposed it was almost time for that question to be answered. For his part, Ciaran had done his best to keep the spirits up, both his own and those of the crews, by practicing his juggling. And it seemed by having a few knives in the air, the dangerous eyes did not linger for too long upon his small frame... at least for now.

"Clear the way... Look out below" Came the bellow of a sailor, unimpressed by the impediment Ciaran was unintentionally providing; and so with a guilty nod, the Halfling quickly exited the ramp and then docks. Heading in to the settlement in search of a place to drink, and a place to rest his head come nightfall.

Part DeuxThere are a lot of quality applications, so I ended up making a word document to go over each to try and help my decision. Just an FYI site admins (like Ildrahil) can read secret texts regardless of if they are included in the tag or not

Kaelin Ashthorn
right-aligned image
Name: Kaelin Ashthorn
Race: Half Elf

Class: Warlock
Subclass: The Great Old One

Mechanical Background:
Background: Far Traveler
Personality Traits: 1) I begin or end my day with small traditional rituals that are unfamiliar to those around me 2) I honor my deities through practices that are foreign to this land.
Ideals: Suspicious. I must be careful, for I have no way of telling friend from foe here.
Bonds: I’m fascinated by the beauty and wonder of this new land.
Flaws: I have a weakness for the new intoxicants and other pleasures of this land.
Skills: Arcana, Intimidation, Insight, Medicine, Nature, Perception
Appearance & Personality: Kaelin is a half-elf with unkempt black hair that is cut short. She has dark gray eyes, and a slim build. She is of average height. The thing that people notice first about her is her tattoos and her piercings. She is covered from head to toe in tattoos, with dark tattoos radiating from her eyes, descending down her neck, and stretching across her arms and legs. Her eye-brows, ears, nose, and lips are pierced. She has an intense gaze, but has learned to be quiet around strangers who often don’t trust her. She has found that she can use this to her advantage - her presence is naturally intimidating to most people. Although she is cautious with strangers, she is naturally curious about the diversity and wonder of the world and the people around her. Her passion in life is plants - studying their magical properties, their medicinal qualities, and their effects on one’s psyche. She has built her life around this - it is her greatest strength, and also her greatest weakness - her indulgence.

Written Background: It's been many years since Kaelin has been home. She never knew her father and was raised by her mother. When she was young, she fell in with a group of delinquent artists. Besides painting and making music, their main pastime was doing large amounts of drugs.

It was a bad idea, but somehow she convinced the local apothecary to give her a job - this was before she had her tattoos. And aside from taking drugs, she found that she was fascinated by making drugs and medicines. What recipes were used? What were the ingredients? Where were they from? She learned that most came from local plants. She began studying plants, trying to learn their properties, where they grew, how they were used. She found she had a knack for this, and also for finding the plants and ingredients. Soon she went from working in the apothecary to supplying the apothecary.

Before long, she was supplying all the local apothecaries with more and more exotic plants. For the first time in her life she had a steady source of income. She split her time between the artist underworld and the world of drugs and medicine. She also learned about the inks used in tattoos and slowly began to get one tattoo after another, harvesting the plants herself until her body was covered. In the evening, she indulged in increasingly exotic drugs with her friends.

When she was 24, she had her first "vision". Qalathoth appeared to her in a drug-induced dream. He was a shifting and amorphous figure, defying the normal boundaries of perception, blending shadows with glimmers of light. As she looked at him, Qalathoth’s form constantly changed—one moment, he appeared to be a towering, cloaked figure with no discernible face; the next, he was a mass of writhing tendrils that pulsed with a strange, hypnotic rhythm.

Kaelin felt as though she was floating in a vast, dark void, with Qalathoth’s presence the only anchor in an otherwise endless expanse. His voice was a cacophony of whispers and echoes, filling her mind with a mix of dread and allure. As she tried to comprehend the vastness around her, Qalathoth’s voice whispered secrets of the cosmos into her mind. With each word, she felt a surge of energy within her, an energy that seemed to be pulled from the very fabric of the void. The next morning when she awoke, she found the whispered words of Qalthoth still tapped into the same energy, warping the fabric of the world around her. It was a revelation.

Kaelin yearned for greater knowledge. Qalathoth led her on, whispering for her to search out new ingredients, new medicines, new drugs, from plants that weren’t to be found anywhere near her. And so her ill-advised journey began: a quest for the forbidden, the exotic, and the unknown.

RP Sample: The old man sat at the back table of a library in Ixotalan. Kaelin picked a dusty book off the shelf, and opened it, her eyes peering past the book to watch the old man. He looked harmless enough, but she knew that he wasn’t. A single candle guttered on his table. He was surrounded by books. The library was quiet. She had invited herself in and nobody had stopped her yet.

After a moment the man glanced in her direction. He did a double take when he saw her, but then went back to his books. Kaelin put her book back on the shelf and walked towards the old man. His robes looked as though they were once a rich indigo, but now they had faded to a dusky blue. Strange sigils glowed faintly at the edge of his sleeves.

"Are you Kheradon?" she asked, trying to sound casual, as she approached his table. She waited for a moment. When he just looked at her, she kicked a leg of the chair opposite him, and sat down.

"Varos told me I could find you here." Still nothing. The old man watched her closely.

"I’ve come a long way - from Telhazar." The man seemed to be studying the tattoos on her neck. She tried to smile. "I’m here looking for some… ingredients."

The old man arched an eyebrow at her. "Ingredients?" he finally spoke. "What sort of ingredients?" he spoke strangely, enunciating each word. "And why do you think I would know about these ingredients?"

She looked at him. She had come a long way. Now wasn’t the time to be shy, but some of the things she sought were not exactly legal, and even mentioning them was unsafe. "Dreamer’s Bloom," she said finally.

"I see," he said after a pause. His eyes twinkled for a moment before turning dark. Kaelin sensed he was going to say something and leaned towards him. She placed one hand gently on the edge of the table, her dark green sleeve brushing against a dusty tome; her other hand rested on the hilt of a dagger hidden beneath her cloak. She watched the old man’s face, searching for any flicker of deceit.

A grin finally spread across the old man’s face. "Deep in the Amedio, the Dreamer’s Bloom is said to grow. It grows in places where the boundary between our world and the realm of dreams is perilously thin."

He paused, his clouded eyes flickering with a distant light, as if he could see the flower in his mind’s eye. "The flower blooms only under the light of the crescent moon, in clearings where the jungle’s canopy parts just enough to let the moonlight touch the ground. Its petals are a delicate, pale blue, shimmering with a faint glow that is almost ethereal."

He leaned forward slightly, his voice lowering. "But beware, child, for the Dreamer’s Bloom is both a blessing and a curse. To find it, one must navigate the twisted paths of the deepest jungle of the Amedio, paths that shift and change like the currents of a river. The flower grows in places touched by the Dreamlands, where reality is malleable, and time flows strangely. The Bloom is said to hold the essence of dreams within its petals. Alchemists and mages alike covet it for its ability to induce deep, prophetic visions or to craft potions that allow one to step into the dreams of others. But the Bloom does not give its power lightly. Those who seek it must be prepared to face their own deepest fears, for the jungle around it is haunted by phantoms of the mind—visions conjured from the darkest corners of one’s soul."

The old man’s gaze sharpened, and his tone turned grave. "Many have sought the Dreamer’s Bloom and have never returned, their minds lost to the jungle’s twisted illusions. If you wish to find it, you must be strong, both in mind and spirit. The jungle will test you, and the flower itself may show you truths you are not ready to see."

He leaned back, his expression thoughtful, then his gaze returned to the dimness of the library. "You will need to find the flower on your own though. I stumbled across when I was lost in the jungle years ago."

Kaelin took a deep breath. It was far more than she had hoped for. She reached into her cloak and pulled out a small vial with a delicate lotus petal motif. It was filled with a clear, crystalline liquid. She pushed it across the table towards the man.

"Lotus Dew," she said. "A gift for you. Thank you." And with that she stood up and walked out of the library.

FLEUR
right-aligned image

Name: Fleur Roux Laurent
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Warlock
Subclass: Celestial (Source: XGE p54)
Alignment: NG

Personality Traits:
  • I honor my deities through practices that are foreign to this land.
  • I begin or end my day with small traditional rituals that are unfamiliar to those around me.
Bond: I'm fascinated by the beauty and wonder of this new land.
Ideal: Inquisitive. Everything is new, but I have a thirst to learn.
Flaw: I have a weakness for the exotic beauty of the people of these lands.
Mechanical Background: Far Traveler (Source: SCAG p148)

Appearance: A young girl in her early 20s, Fleur stands tall at 5ft 7in. Bright red hair tied back or braided, striking green eyes, and freckles only add to her charismatic presence.
Personality: Naturally inquisitive, Fleur is always eager to see new sight, meet new people, and try new things.
BackstoryBackstory:
Born the daughter of Eleanor Laurent. Fleur never really knew her father. Her mother didn't like to talk about him. Painful memories. All she did know is that he was a traveler from a distant land. Fleur found some comfort in the local temple. A place that allowed her to see the beauty in life, and the world around. To help out there, young Fleur assisted an apothecary collect ingredients for salves, balms and poultices.

Though she loved her home, as she grew so did her curiosity. A need and craving for new places. New people. New experiences. So with bittersweet tears she bit farewell to her hometown, and ventured forth.

(Short and sweet, but can be expanded on upon request)

30 Minute (or less) RP Sample
I attempted to play this character before. I only was able to post a handful of posts before the GM ended the campaign for personal reasons. For the sample, I'm including the last post from that campaign as a sample of how I hope to continue to role play her.

Burny
left-aligned image

Character name: Bernadette Brightly, AKA "Burny"

Race: Rock Gnome

Class: Wizard

Background: Guild Wizard (custom)

Personality: Burny is normally cheerful, full of energy, a bit scatterbrained. She always wants to please everyone but doesn't always succeed. Her problem is that she obsesses over what she sees as her addiction to death. She loses focus when people are talking about anything else, her necromancy spells work better than her "normal" ones, she listens to the acoustic equivalent of My Chemical Romance, and worst of all, she has a tendency to tell people about her struggles with this obsession and why she is powerless to do anything about it. Sometimes, you just want to pick her up and shake her until she either accepts it or just snaps out of it.

Physical Description: Burny is short, a bit plump, with blotchy skin, and a face that seems a bit out of balance. Her nose is too big, her chin recedes, and she isn't the most coordinated person in the world either. On the other hand, she smiles a lot, is nice to everyone around her, and while her laugh is a bit screechy, she seems to genuinely like the people she is with.

Backstory: The daughter of two guild wizards, Burny was trained early in magic. Her father hoped she would be a divination wizard like her mother or maybe an abjuration wizard like him. And for a while it went well. But, after her visit to the carnival, she seemed to fixate on necromancy. Invisible hands (mage hand and chill touch), reading every trashy vampire novel ever written, a few Wednesday Addams moments with her dolls, her bent for the magic of death and the undead colored her life. Her parents did everything they could to discourage it, from time outs to having her talk to the cities resident expert on personality and insight. But she just wanted to shrink head. Literally.

As a good daughter, she went on to Magical Academy and being naturally proficient and well trained, she graduate with honors. Then she took service with her parents' guild and settled into a straightforward, but boring, life among the living. It was an easy life and a good living, but the dead kept calling her back. She tried to go without necromancy, which is naturally frowned on among reputable mages, but always ended up sneaking over to the graveyard and casting just slightly inappropriate spells.

RP Sample From "Welcome to the Witchlight" Carnival, her last campaign that died after a year and a half (with no combat yet).

The audience had been asked if they wanted to perform at the end of the professional performers. We needed a way to get close to the two beings who ran the carnival.

"I have an idea. Jolly would you dance with me as part of it? Nothing fancy. I'm going to build an act around my trinkets."

If Jolly says no, she will try to talk Legobric into it, I mean everyone knows elves can dance. If not, then she will keep asking until one of the others agrees. When she has a partner, she whispers the plan to him or her and gets up to go down to the ring. When she gets there, she calls up to Mr. Light:

"Can I get a dark tent with a single spotlight, I would like to show off my mechanical toys. Just train the spotlight here and follow the toys if they move."

She waits for the spotlight.

In the spotlight, she places her music box, and leaves it there, alone for a 20 count to build anticipation. Then, using mage hand, she opens it to start the music playing. As the music plays in the stationary spotlight, she draws her dancing partner into a dance around the edges of the spot, never fully entering the light, so it comes across as shadows and silhouettes rather than having the attention on the dancing. The music plays for a minute then winds down.

As it stills, she draws her partner further into the darkness and releases the mechanical butterfly with another mage hand. The butterfly flutters and flies in the spotlight, the crystal and glass in its wings breaking the light into prismatic patterns. Then it winds down and she lets the ring fall to silence, performance over.

"Thank you."

She calls out to the audience, letting them know the impromptu showing is over.

Name: (Shadow) Under the Moon - The Wandering Jungle Clan
Race: Tabaxi
Class: Monk
Monastic Tradition: Way of the Open Hand
Mechanical Background: Explorer
Appearance: Sleek, dark, and muscular, a bit over 6 feet. He looks like a panther standing up. He obviously been in training to stay in shape the way he is. He wears no armor and armed with only a short bow at his back and a dagger sheathed at each thigh, and a shortsword sheathed at each hip.
right-aligned image

Personality: Easy going, always looking for an adventure and reasons to travel to see the world, especially exploring new & unexplored lands.
Written Background: Born in Hepmonaland, he was born in the shadow under the full moon, thus, his name Shadow Under the Moon of the Wandering Jungle Clan. Outsiders just calls him Shadow. Like his people, the jungle was his home until he gotten older. Like most of his kind, curiosity caused him to wander, discovering new lands, collecting shing things and anything magical.

On the outskirts of the jungle, a monastery had been built. The Abbot was a Baklunish, his limbs here longer than most humans and had high cheekbones. The Baklunish Empire had fallen, and the people had spread our across the land. The Abbot decided to teach its culture in Shadow’s homeland. Martial arts had appealed to him and many of his people for they preferred to use their claws instead of melee weapons if they can. So, it was only natural for Shadow to join the monastery so he could fight better.

He had taken cartography as his study, enjoying making maps. He had used that skill when he traveled, it came in handy. Most of his kind were always curious about new places and when he heard of the Amedio Jungle, being untamed, most of the jungle unexplored, he jumped at the chance to explore the area, and he made the trip to the area. He visited the villages and markets to talk to the native to find more information about the untamed jungle before he would venture into the unknown land.

30 Minute (or less) RP Sample: Upon arrival, Shadow immediately set off, he came across a ruin, and as he looked around, a couple of male human travels were passing by and stopped. Shadow turned to look at them curiously.

“What was this place?”

The two men looked him curiously as well, they never seen a panther walk and talk before. One of them spoke. “That there was Fort Greenrock, it used to be a waystation, a remote colony of monks and druids. Not many know what happened to the place.”

Shadow turned to look at the place. “A colony of monks…” He was even more curious now,

The other man continued to stare, and he cocked his head. “Uh, are you what they call a Tabaxi?”

Shadow nods, “Yes, yes I am.”

“Hmm, heard of your kind, but never seen one before, a pleasure. You new around here?”

Shadow nods once again.

The first man spoke again. “Ah, must be an adventurer or at least explorer. We get many of them wanting to explore the jungle, although I don’t see the appeal. Years ago, there were survivors of the Great War between the Suel and Baklunish. Baklunish were probably the monks. Avoid the north if you can. The Brotherhood of the Hook are not the sort you want to meet, they take people and make them slaves.”

Shadow smiled at the mention of Baklunish, his Abbot was one. He then asked, “Thank you, can you tell me anything more about this jungle?”

Both men looked at each other and sighs, shaking their head. They looked at each other again and the second man shrugs. The first man then spoke again. “Well, if you are set in yer fool head to explore, then it’s only right I give you some information. This jungle is a vast tropical rainforest extending southward more than 300 leagues. There are tribes of savage humans of Suel and Olman live here, with the latter have some strange gods from Hepmonaland. Besides them, there’s fierce animals, man-eating monsters, intelligent apes, and haunted ruins. This jungle also holds many carnivorous and poisonous plants, and that’s no lie. But some have some medicinal and magical properties that are very powerful. So young man…er, cat, or whatever you are called, beware, there’s danger everywhere.”

Shadow grins. Hepmonaland, his homeland. One of the gods is probably the Cat Lord. He frowned at the rest. He heard there was danger, but if the locals were extra wary, then he should doubly be as well.

Provide a list of 4 or so other characters that you think your character would play nice with in this game. In secret, of course:

@BlackDragon0
I know you replied to me in secret, but I want to point this out for everyone so there is no confusion.

The part about not rolling dice is literally in bolded red text in the ad.

Quote:
I read somewhere in one of the “you’re new here” threads that no dice should be rolled in the advertisement, so please avoid doing that here.
So yes, it is there.

If anyone has rolled dice, or if anyone does roll dice, please note that, if you are selected, you will have to roll everything again in the game forum.

Ok, I finished a first draft of my application. Let me know if you have any feedback... I tried to tie her backstory into Amedio a little via the RP.
