Just thinking, a few things we need to bear in mind as we take stock of ourselves and regroup:

*The old hands in the party are rather below our expected wealth-by-level, but I understand we have some bounties to collect from the secular authorities?

*We've obviously got to go and pay a visit or two to the local guards once we're done here for a number of reasons. The more secular group of guards (city guards?) seem friendly enough, but obviously the Ulric-worshipping soldiers around here aren't terribly friendly with us. Perhaps our new witch-hunter is on decent terms with the Cult of Ulric, if perhaps also good friends with their rivals in the Cult of Sigmar?

*If we are carrying these books of badness around, we'll basically have a target painted on our back for who knows how many bad guys. We could dissipate some of the heat on us and help reduce the chances that, even worst come to worst, the chaos worshippers get their hands on the book by paying for the production of a number of similar looking fakes, right? Even if they did get a decent look at the book, we should be able to get convincing looking fakes made I would hope.

Indeed, the High Capitular will be happy to give you all a reward for protecting the dark tome as soon as the wolf guard are gone. And the city guard will also offer an award for your actions in Mittlersdorf. You've just been preoccupied dealing with one thing after another to collect, but you'll have a chance to collect before any real combat happens again, rest assured.

As far as making copies go, that will work against mundane assailants, but unless you have them enchanted too, enemy casters won't be fooled. Granted most of your assailants will be of the former, so it will probably work at least once. But once they realize they've been had, expect them to be more prepared for their second incursion.

Lastly, part of the reason the wolf guard are hostile to you is because, well, you're a Sigmarite in a primarily Ulricson city. Though the members of the cloth manage to get along reasonably well on both ends, the warrior groups of each tend to butt heads a lot. That, and they are just naturally rather rough around the edges. Comes with the territory.
