ABOVE ALL, get the improved feint feat, and many ranks in bluff.

I think that the idea and concept is great, but how is it in gameplay?
RP wise: Great concept that allows some interesting stories and development Mechanics wise: At low levels you run into very few creatures with spells, making him a weak rogue. At higher levels the ability is nice but for two things, 1) you have to get in close and make a sucessful sneak attack to steal spells. Most of the fighters in the group will be concentrating on damage dealers rather than spell caster, and might not move to flank so sneak attack might be more difficult. 2) you cannot hold the spell for very long, only an hour. This makes it difficult to horde stolen spells and abilities. I have not yet tried playing the class, so the above arguments are in theory only. I would like to try playing it sometime in the near future though. -me |

This class isn't good to use with novice DM's. They have to be able to plan for you to be able to steal spells, and to plan for you using them. One of my favorite DM's primiarly had us fight martial weapon users and beasts, so a spelltheif would have been useless. If your DM loves wizards of all sorts, then they can prove overpowering.

Actually, I played a spellthief, and the only time her ability came in handy is when the healer was down. not involuntary, no attack needed. I healed the healer.

DMs shouldn't 'plan' to have you steal spells. the DM should have his or her own story to tell..
The spellthief is very good fun to play if given support from his part and a good knowledge on how to execute his abilities. Perfect fun with Sorcerers, the spell thief can effective either stop an opposing Sorc from using a spell or borrow a spell from his ally to blast at opponents without really affecting his friend much since slots come easily to a Sorc and the spell theif can easily choose a spell that the Sorc isn't using much (like that Magic missle spell from a Fire-ball happy friend) Very useful in later levels, yes. But fun to use at low levels... just play like a thief with a ace up his sleeve... |

The spellthief, from what I read, would be alot of fun to play. I personally don't know what the mechanics are exactly, but I can see alot of fun in the class/prestige-class. If you are able to get up to the spellcaster and deal good damage, why not be able to take something from him too...likea spell. I can see a few problems arising with novice campagins, but if the DM is a fast learner and sees that the spell thief is too weeak or too strong, it wouldn't be hard to rectify the problem.

We'll, I just got accepted into a game as a spelltheif. Anyone have any ideas as to what kind of stats I should aim for, or a good race to use?

If I may make a tangential point: spellthief NPCs rock.
Toss 5 or 6 halfling spellthieves with swarmfighting against your party. The casters won't know what hit 'em. And boy oh boy is it good flavor to see the power-crazed mage have his own favorite spell tossed back into his face. Of course, being the rogue that is the continuous brunt of said mage's anger might be a bit biasing...

Of course, a spellcaster hit by 5 or 6 rogues of any kind would be too dead to see his spells take effect.
