Plot SummaryA newly obtained Firefly Vessel, by a newly put together crew has just completed on their first job. It went well enough, but all but 2 of the crew now want out after the payout. You are in need of a job or a place to be other than where you are at. Ever sail in a Firefly?

Characters are joining a crew of folk who want to get to work on their own out in the black. All characters will want to be on the crew.
Timeframe will be just after events of Firefly T.V. Series Final Episode and prior to Events of the Motion Picture “Serenity.”

You need a job. There's a docked ship that needs some crew. What are you waiting for?


Game Mechanics
What 'type' of game will it be?
Game will be typical of the Firefly/Serenity theme. Players’ characters will be part of crew – a team. Each should have motivations and or reasons to have joined a crew, and to stay part of one. Obviously, these motivations and reasons do not have to be known by other characters.

How many Players are you looking for?

What is the characters' starting level?
Greenhorn

How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
This is determined by the starting level of the game, which is Greenhorn. Point buy system - 42 points for Attributes, 62 points for Skills.

Are there any particular character “things that you want... or do not want?
Some Traits, Complications may be limited to minor. “Reader Trait is off limits. Mute complication cannot be chosen.

What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game?
Uh-duh. Human only please. No aliens in the ‘Verse, people are weird enough as it is.

Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game ?
All players will do their own die rolling. GM will roll for all NPCs and all nasty ‘Verse surprises.

Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that Players should know about?
Yes. Here's the link to them.

Is a character background required? Are you looking for anything in particular?
Yes. Characters Backgrounds are up to players, though should be looking to be part of a ship's crew. The “Hows” and “Whys” of this is strictly up to the player.
GM reserves right to “suggest” changes be made before game start for better “flow” of game. No Lone Wolf type characters please.

Are your Players restricted to particular rule books and supplements?
Yes. These are the books I have, and all are allowed.
-Serenity RPG Core Rules Book
-Big Damn Heroes Handbook
-Six-Shooters & Spaceships
-Cortex Shipyards, Volume 1 & 2
Character Submission:
Need name, Age, Sex, background, and general idea of skill set (like complications, traits, etc.) you want your character to have. This can all be blended together in a paragraph or two as I'm not picky. Character generation will take place after your player has been accepted (though it you wish to get a head start, feel free to do so, but this will not sway acceptance into game).

Lastly: No dice rolling in the Advertisement Thread. Shouldn’t be a problem since Cortex rules are based on “Point Buy” system.

I'd like to have a full crew within a week, or maybe a week from tomorrow, but I'll close it as soon or as late as I get the 5 or 7 players.

It's not d20 based.
Cortex has their own twist on things. In a nutshell you get a number of points to spend, adjusted depending on Traits & Complications selected (It's actually easy to pick up on, though my explanation may not make that seem so).
42 points in a pool to spend for Greenhorn level.
Example: For simplicity sakes, let's say your 6 Attribute scores (Agility, Intelligence, Strength, etc.) are all d6, costing you 36 total points. If you purchase a skill say in pistol the base is d4, costing 4 points from the pool. That d4 is added to whatever a character's base Attribute is, in this case Agility. So a roll of d6 + d4 to use the pistol. Depending on the factors of how hard the shot is, that determines the "to hit" number. It's all in the book,s and as I said, not as crazy or difficult as I a failing terribly at explaining.

Here's an example of how the Serenity Core Rules explains the roll using gun skill. A normal attempt at success would need a "3" for easy an +4 every step up after that. An attempt at "Extra Success" would need a "10" for Easy and +4 for every step up after that. A Complex action attempt would need a roll of "15" for Easy and +4.... etc.

Easy: Recognize ammo for different kinds of guns; hit an unaware, stationary target (broad side of a barn, man with his back to you) at close range; find the safety on an unfamiliar weapon.
Average: Identify special ammo (armor piercing, “smart” bullets, etc.); hit a smallish, stationary target (garden gnome) at close range; clear a jammed weapon.
Hard: Adjust the sight or make small modifications to a weapon; hit a small, stationary target (such as a Blue Sun Cola can) at close range; reload an unfamiliar weapon quickly under stressful conditions.
Formidable: Shoot a tiny, stationary target (the button of a coat) at close range; make significant modifications to a weapon (collapsible components, adding laser targeting).
Heroic: Shoot a miniscule, stationary target (a sideways poker card) at close range; make major changes to a weapon (adapting it to fire specialized ammunition), shoot at the guy who is holding your friend hostage and hit him dead square in the center of the forehead.
Incredible: Hit a person behind a closed door while aiming through the keyhole.
Ridiculous: Set the gun to autofire and stitch a fellow’s outline without one bullet hitting him.
Impossible: Hit a buzzing bee several blocks away in the left eye.

Background Rachel Ginsberg is a fixture of the dens and parlors of the Gambler's Run. Like so many other young ladies, she spends her evenings walking out, flapping from boyfriend to boyfriend and hanging on the arm of lucky young gamblers. If they're lucky enough, they may get even more than that.

Rachel was born shipside, orbiting Persephone aboard the long-hauler Good Book, shipping foodstuffs from the Rim to the Core and fuels and tech back the other way. Brian Ginsberg, ship's doctor, and his wife, Liu Mei Na, were proud parents, and soon decided that a child was best raised on good solid dirt. Settling on Hera, Brian practiced both in the planetary capital and plying a circuit between the rural towns and villages. But Brian's time moving between the rich and the poor showed him just how unfair the 'Verse could be, and the Alliance more unfair than others.

When the Independent Faction raised their banners and called for volunteers, the Ginsburgs left their nine year old daughter with family and joined up. Especially in war, a surgeon is always needed. There were a few letters, but not many, and only two years into the War came the last letter. From the mobile surgical regiment's colonel, explaining that unguided Alliance munitions had demolished their surgical ward, and Brian and Mei Na Ginsberg with it.

This event defined Rachel's existence, even as she was raised by others. Though she had some schooling, she never lasted long under the strict rule of schoolmasters. She took odd jobs to survive, washing and mending and laboring as best she could. But as friendly as she was, she found others like her, and it wasn't long before she grew out of her grief into a young woman of enormous confidence and broad experience.

Concept and Character
Defining Role/Archetype/Concept Too young to know from a hole in the ground.
Motivation: I just want to fly, damn the rules.
Goals: People aren't things, a government that thinks they are doesn't deserve to exist.
Fears Leeches - hate those damn things! Bloodsuckers of all kinds for that matter - and that includes lawyers.
Virtues Loyal to a fault. Cunning but not ruthless.
Vices: drinker, but never on duty. cynical.
Anything Else: Dow doesn't care (or pretends not to), as long as he has money in his pocket. If anyone will trust him to pilot, he'll do it - putting his skills on display. His irascible nature comes out at times, especially under stress or when drinking. Young enough to be an idealist, but it conflicts with his cynical view of humanity.

What has gone beforeOrigins: Grew up in the outer tier of core worlds, but didn't care for the way of life. He ran away from home to escape the confining social pressure to conform and found himself without any support or training. He had to rely on natural talent and a quick learning mind to support himself.

The War: He's too young to have fought himself, but his da returned from fighting when he was 12 or so. Didn't like to talk about it, but had a lot of anger bottled up inside, he was old beyond his years. Ma's been takin care of him and supporting the family since. I been working at home since I can remember an bringin in money while Da sits and stews in his own juices.

I would love to put in an application but would need to read the book a bit. Yes I've watched the show and I love it.

I'm not sure exactly on what role I'd like to play, Originally was thinking of pilot as Wash is my second most favorite character in the series next to Kaylee but I see you've got both roles plied for, so I'd have to look at the book but thinking that any ship would need a "Security" person.

This is the number one reason to get access to the book, so I can pull some kind of history for him/her.
I'm thinking if anything, someone loosely based around Zoe (Role-wise), but with a completely unique backstory.

So: INTERESTED, to be posting character concept.

Nice concept roninkelt. Like the "no such thing as a two-drink minimum" belief...

Replied to your PM with links to books. And as you will see it is possible to be even skilled in two areas at Greenhorn level. Even very low abilities in some skills can grow rather quickly sometimes as your character advances. And it's always good to have someone else on the crew who can pilot and mechanic, even if their skills are lower than others. Same goes with using a gun, tech skills, people skills, etc.
