For a moment Ravgor was pleased with his choice of partnering with Aelys. He had seen in her someone willing to push the line if asked and who was seeking approval as a means of finding stability. Who better to offer that that someone in authority and Ravgor had early on hooked her with his plans to claim land now that the Blood Mist was gone. She was ready to make a daring move to gain the sword and he was excited to see her attempt. It was Halinne’s words that turned him sullen.

He had dismissed the threat of these lumbering figures quite readily, forgetting the warning of the mountain and the vibrations that ran through this place. One of the first things that his sorcery had granted him as he grew in power was the sense of magic around him. Magic was a mercurial force and it had taken him quite some time to understand what it was he was sensing and how to quell that feeling so it would not overwhelm him. There was that time that someone brought him a ring, clumsily crafted and looking little more than beaten brass. To his eyes that is all it was but the burst of power that assaulted him as he focused on it nearly overwhelmed him. It was weeks before he would attempt that again, this time reaching out slowly and with just a sliver of his power, the way one would barely open a hooded lantern to get their bearings and then reveal more of the light to see fully what surrounded them. He had learned that the types of magic felt different as well, some leaving him cold and shivering as if he walked among the highest peaks of Mount Varrik while others left him feeling vibrant and alive.

Chiding himself for not paying attention to the feeling this place gave him, subtle and faint as it was, he spoke up.

“She is right Aelys.” Ravgor was often stern and quite hard on others but would not shy from admitting when another was right. He was equally willing to admit his own faults. Acknowledging his mistakes took the power away from anyone seeking to use them against him. “This place has magic, I ignored it in my focus on what that sword might be. The mountain told me this place was special, that something here drove the orcs out or destroyed them in these caverns. Maybe it is these brutes, maybe not, but I can feel it now. May be best to leave the sword alone.”

Maybe, but I'd still love to see that blade a little closer.

With his thoughts betraying his own logic and direction, he left it to the half-elf to make her own choice.

She almost wanted to ignore their warning as she considered the worth of the blade. What if it was more than what they were being paid for this task of theirs? The half-elf briefly considered her options, but in a rare case of thinking about her future, she realized she would rather get more jobs from Porus in the future than continue getting scraps from picking pockets after whatever coin the sword would bring ran out.

Aelys stopped her approach and started slinking back towards the others, though she tucked away the bone for now. No reason not to try after they found the halfling and finished their task at least. She spoke softly after glancing back over her shoulder towards the sword. "Right, let's go find Iddlepot's brother and get out of here then."

The answer reassured her somewhat, though she remained blissfully oblivious to the pair's plan to exchange the sword. In truth, even if she had known it, she would not prove entirely disapproving: wealth held less interest for her, though it certainly had its uses, but deep lore and knowledge of what had happened to this place and its poor, cursed inhabitants... that intrigued her greatly.

Ravgor's mentioning of magic was another thing about which she was most curious... but she knew that this was neither the time nor place to have that conversation. The dwarf was certainly no druid; she expected she would know enough to notice it if he were. Did that mean that he was a sorcerer... or merely superstitious? She would have to find out later.

Regardless, now was the time for actions, not words.

"I am not certain how we can go about it." she continued, still in quiet whispers. "I see no apparent trace of the halfling's passing." She looked grimly towards the pile of bones, and then again towards her companions, and tried to motion subtly towards the exit hole at the distance. "Perhaps he went that way?" She thought for a moment, considering how to best make herself useful, until a few moments later she reached a conclusion.

"I will approach them, and see if I can communicate with them, and learn what I can. Perhaps they have need of a healer; perhaps I can strike a bargain, if they are willing. This could also serve as a distraction, and if you wish to take advantage... I think I could help by speaking to them. I do not know if our halfling left tracks or any trace of his passing, but perhaps it is worth investigating. Yet I am open to alternatives. As long as none of us strays too far without the others... I would prefer it if we stayed together, you see."

She gave them a faint smile, but it was clear that she was afraid. Then, she started searching in the caves. There were lovers here, and she wondered if she could find the fruits of their love, but she did not recall seeing children in the cave.

OOCQuick question: Are there any children in the cave? Halinne thinks she's good with kids, and she hopes that, if there are any, they might prove less suspicious/hostile than the grown-ups.

If not, she'll still proceed with her plan, for example approaching those that are playing dice, unless of course one of her companions stops her I'll roll accordingly (if needed) once the details are determined.

The downward slope leading to a smaller cavern was dark but intriguing. Comfortable with underground spaces and limited light, he decided to explore the pathway a little. The woman that had joined him, still curious to him and rather odd in her priorities to Ravgor, had just warned them of the danger these lumbering bodies represented and now was seeking to engage them. He had said his warning. If she chose to push things that was her choice but he had no intention of dying down here. Best to know if this slope would lead him to a larger complex, he could maneuver around and find a defensible position in or a sealed room that would become a trap.

Rocks and dirt be damned, if she was going to rile them up anyway, we could have just grabbed that sword.

“Watch yerself,” he said to both this companions, but his gaze was clearly on Halinne. “Not sure they will care about your words but they might lash out just because. If the halfling was down here don’t see any other way he could have gone.”

Great move by Halinne in terms of roleplay for her character. Ravgor may be upset but I love the dynamics being set up in this chamber. Really interested to see what the consequences are!

Aelys was a bit apprehensive about their new companion's suggestion to simply talk to the people around them, but the dwarf's words were enough to dissuade them from attacking the pair. The half-elf could only hope that if there was no hint of hostility in her speech, they wouldn't have to deal with being set upon by these barely-there people.

"It's worth a try. If they start to show any signs of aggression, we'll just pivot to simply walking around and trying to find him ourselves." The thief didn't show any outward hesitation, but this was all far too strange for her to add any meaningful advice that might actually help them.

Meeting the LocalsRavgor's attention was on the only visible exit, as his two fellow explorers considered trying to get to know the cavern's occupants a little better. Dwarves and stone. Mines and caves. It was in the short man's blood to know about such things, and thus be able to estimate risk. As far as his visual assessment could gather, the slope of the tunnel wouldn't be a problem. No rope required, just some careful steps, maybe? Then, something familiar yet unpleasant tickled his nose. Something down that tunnel smelled like... urine.

Meanwhile, with careful steps and gentle words, and with the benefit of Aelys on lookout, Halinne had begun to maneuver around. She soon found that by keeping noise to a minimum and avoiding bold gestures, she was able to meander around and between these hole-lost souls quite freely. It was as though these poor people's senses were muted somehow, or the effects of time and their low star-rating accommodation had seen a decline in their former mental capacity. Either that, or the boredom of their lives had taken a heavy toll.

As Halinne carefully moved, sometimes a pair of eyes might turn her way and blink, before returning to their former task. Other cavern-goers murmured unintelligible words in her direction, though it was hard to know if they were greetings or just... well... murmurs. Soon, she came close to the duo engaged in a game of rolling dice. They seemed so engrossed in the clatter of cubic piece of bone upon a small timber board, that they didn't note her arrival at all. With an arm-motion at a pace akin to a sloth, a once young, well-bearded fellow picked the dice up and moaned, before handing it to his gaming companion. The red-haired man he was playing with, murmured something, and then let the dice drop.

Clack... clack... clack...

He'd rolled a... one.

Tying to judge what was ahead of them in the dark tunnel Ravgor caught wind of the acidic tang of urine in the stale cavern air. He wasn’t an expert that could tell what left it dripping on the walls like Jartran was. She could tell if it was bear or badger that had lifted its leg or squatted on the ground just by sniffing the air. Just one of her many useful skills that had made her a highly sought after hunter and guide. It was a shame that she had been caught in a flash flood and lost several years back. He could have used her on his quest to find lands to claim now that the Blood Mist was gone.

Could be one of two things though. The halfling in hiding or some beast in waiting. Not sure I just want to walk in to find out.

He was not often indecisive but it took him a minute to make up his mind. Looking around for a rock that would suit his needs, he picked up a particularly flat dark one. Wiping its face on his shirt to get rid of the larger pieces of dirt, he rubbed the center even cleaner with his thumb. He knew the rune he wanted to carve and brought that in mind as he bit into the soft flesh between his thumb and forefinger. A reminder to himself that he should have brought some chalk or charcoal, something he would need to rectify. Dipping a finger into the blood that was pooling where his teeth had sunken in he began to trace the rune of Entice spell: ] RANK 1 ✥ RANGE: Short ✥ DURATION: Immediate The symbol lures the victim, who must make an INSIGHT roll with a negative modification equal to the Power Level. If the roll fails, the victim must RUN to within ARM’S LENGTH of the symbol, spending all their normal actions to do so (bonus actions from talents can still be used normally). When the victim reaches the symbol, or if the symbol is moved, the effect is broken. No effect on monsters.Enticement on the rock.

If it was the halfling down there then this spell would draw him out but if it were something more dangerous calling the cavern home it wouldn’t be affected or even know what Ravgor was attempting. He had practiced drawing it and was confident that he had it right but since he had never used this rune before he hoped it would

Halinne

As Ravgor wandered off to explore, Halinne was left in the company of Aelys. Perhaps the dwarf would find the location of the halfling, or at least his remains, single-handedly. He seemed, after all, a competent fellow. Yet she could not simply sit by idly while he sought answers in that tunnel. She had to do something; she had to contribute as best she could.

Back in Straya, she had the ability to put folks at ease with a simple smile and a kind word or two. This was most certainly not Straya, but perhaps that skill would work here as well. But it was risky, and so she approached the task methodically. For a good while she merely observed them from afar, and when at last she decided to draw nearer, she did so slowly, and sought to make herself as non-threatening as possible. It was hard to tell what they thought of this, as they seemed dull-witted, and completely oblivious to her. But there were no children amongst them, despite their occasional amorous displays. "Interesting..." she thought, beginning to see the entire thing as a puzzle to be solved.

At length, mustering all her courage, she spoke, seeking to end the uncertainty and nerve-wracking wait. Softly and quietly, almost in a whisper, she said to the dice-throwers as courteously as she could:

"Excuse me but... would you mind if I also played?"

OOCI'll roll Empathy + Manipulation in the dice thread. Fingers crossed!
Edit: No luck! 2 Empathy damage and 2 WP I think.

Dice and LuresThe tangly-bearded dice player groaned deeply, but there was a strange mocking tone to it, as though rolling the lowest number on the little cube still had a meaning attached. Then, the ginger-haired man picked up the dice, and handed it to his friend. It seemed an odd game they'd crafted, as though you rolled for your opponent or something. Anyway, it was at around this point that Halinne tried a gentle interjection. Only the fellow with a dice in-hand bothered to make eye contact with her, and then tighten his grip around their dice.

"Marrawww!"

Mmm. That didn't sound particularly friendly, the nearest hypothesized translation being, "mine!".

Perhaps Ravgor would have more luck making friends down here? His recent activities were odd ones. Had he connected to an odd artistic urge or need for creativity? No. The dwarf was up to something else, a task made a little macabre by the ink being formed by his own blood. As he did so, he sensed something. Magic. Down the tunnel. It was just the slightest whiff of it, and a strange accompaniment to the scent of peepee. Then, somewhere down there, he heard footsteps. Bare feet pattering on the stone, and approaching quickly!
OOCThere is something magic within short range (up to 25m or so) down the tunnel, and also something running towards Ravgor's symbol. You don't have much time before "it" arrives, so let me know what you'd like to do with the next 5 seconds or so

The rune worked. He could hear footsteps running towards him. Footsteps that had to belong to the halfling he was trying to lure his way.

The halfling wasn’t alone though. Something…else…was coming along with him.

Didn’t expect that to happen!

Ravgor didn’t have much time to think on what this magical thing could be but if he had he would have concluded that it was whatever was keeping the halfling to be a morsel for when it got hungry. Perhaps some notion of this raced through his mind though. Perhaps that is what led him to trace a symbol in the air before the tunnel entrance as he chanted. The trail of sparkling gold that followed his finger, flaring before fading away, created a seal of magic over the entranceway of the tunnel. The spell was meant to protect one from magic but he hoped that it would also prevent whatever magic was coming towards him from passing through.

He took a few steps to the left of the tunnel entrance and stepped out of sight - just in case.

Halinne was not necessarily expecting a friendly reaction, but the sudden cry startled her. She gasped, and quickly fell back: the aggressive response was more than enough to dissuade her from trying anything like this again. At least the savage had not outright attacked her.

Then Ravgor cried something from a distance. Compelled to join him, she left the game of dice as quickly as she could without arising further suspicion from the grey folk that were gathered around the players.

AnotherIt was an uncommonly mixed duo of spells that Ravgor had summoned up via his link to a culture founded in both stone and signs. On their own, each piece of magic usually had relatively predictable results. Together though, and down here? As worrisome and downright strange as this place was, perhaps it too offered opportunities for knowledge. Knowledge and maybe a bit of wealth too. The implications of the not-easily-forgotten and "fancy" sword owned by a local, kind of proved a point. The chance for riches was very real too. No doubt this opportunity had probably attracted the Halfling in the first place.

The footsteps grew louder, and in mere moments a tall skinny man came running in from the area's only visible exit. His thin flesh barely covered the skeletal form of the fellow. Bald headed, long-nailed, and dressed in a long tattered robe, he made haste towards Ravgor's symbol-marked piece of loose rock.

left-aligned image
"Why! Why!" He exclaimed. "No!"

When his deep-set eyes fell on the trio of strangers waiting in the cavern, the look of shock on his face was clear to see. For some unknown reason, the locals around the edges of the interior space, paid the new arrival no attention at all.
OOCI've ruled that Entice worked on him because he isn't "really" a monster per se. Also, he isn't magic... but something in the room he was forced to flee from, must be hehe. I wanted to stop here in case you want to do anything with the stone lure, or end the spell etc.

The magic felt different this time. It was usually subtle, more of an emotional response than a physical sensation most times. Now though, he felt it around him. Swirling lazily about him like a slight breeze just strong enough to rattle dead leaves on the hard ground but not strong enough to spirit them away. Was it because he had pushed himself? Is that why it felt different? Or was it this place. Dark and quiet for so long until they arrived, did they awaken something? Was that what he sensed far down the tunnel and out of sight?

Seeing the emaciated figure running towards him and not the halfling he expected Ravgor tried to take in what was happening. The robe, the purpose of his actions and his words - more than just the grunts of the others that were milling about – made the dwarf think that this one was different. The shouts that demanded explanation and cried out disapproval made Ravgor think the gaunt man

might be a shaman or leader of some kind. This idea was quashed by the lack of reaction from the clods in the chamber, they ignored the ranting man completely.

The magic that he still sensed down the tunnel. The look of surprise on seeing Ravgor and his companions. His anger at it all.

Did I pull this man from where he wanted to be? Is he the cause of the calamity here?

“Hold yerself fella. Since I got you here, might as well ask you some questions,” A quick glance to Halinne and Aelys to make sure they knew to get ready in case things went awry and he turned back to the grey skinned man that was anxiously pacing around the stone that he looked at with anger. “For starters, what’s down that tunnel you came from. And after that how about telling us what’s going on here with all these folk?”

Unsure of what the man’s reaction was going to be, Ravgor made a show of hefting his axe as a silent warning of what a rash reaction might get in return.

The grey folk in the cave were dulled-witted, but not blind or deaf. The lack of a reaction from them played into Halinne's suspicions: there was certainly magic at work here, but whether it was from the place itself, or from Ravgor, or this horrible-looking fellow, she could not tell. Either way, his sudden appearance filled her with dread, bringing to her mind terrifying tales; tales that she would rather forget presently.

She took a place by the dwarf and held her staff firmly in both hands, a look of determination on her face. She was neither a fearsome nor intimidating sight; still, there was strength in numbers, and Aelys was likely better with a sword, and far more capable. Between the three of them, she hoped that they could deter this ancient sorcerer, or whatever he was, from attacking them.

And at the same time, she attempted to correlate the contents of her mind, seeking for any lore she might have picked up over the years. Such was her strength, and not prowess in combat-but perhaps knowledge would find some application here, as it had earlier.

OOCStats: 3/5 Empathy, others ok.
Willpower points: 2/10
Actions: I'll attempt rolling Wits + Lore in the dice thread to see if she's heard anything about this strange newcomer.
Edit: Just one success (after pushing it).
