Smugglers - Chapter 1: Crash-landing is fun!

The last few months had been quite thin for the crew of the Lucky Rocket. The weary captain was even considering going nearer to the Core worlds in hope of more business when mercifully they managed to line something up. The job was a bit risky but manageable for the experienced crew and the pay was more than welcome. The client was even paying for a full load while their cargo scarcely occupied a tenth of their available space!

At first everything was fine. The Lucky Rocket reached Boros unchallenged by the Purple bellies stationed on the planet. Jack was able to contact the right people and obtain the desired items most efficiently (the crew was not informed of what they were to transport). Chang used that time to effectuate some minor repairs with the help of his assistant Dan, as the fuel lines were getting quirky again and were prompt to leak at the damndest time.

The Captain meanwhile left the ship accompanied by Kazuya after ordering the fuel, and together they went to visit some of the Captain’s old hangouts. The rest of the crew doesn’t really know what went on for the few hours they were gone, but a patrol accosted the docked ship during that time. A completely pissed off Ian was forced to pay a fine for some out-of-date registrations, while cursing the captain for his inaptitude in managing even the most basic duties. When the Captain returned, smelling of alcohol and tobacco, the first mate just slapped the bill into the tipsy man’s hand without a word. Wincing at the amount, the Captain nevertheless ordered Hot Green to lift off, direction Whitefall.

After a bit less than a week, Whitefall came in sight on the radar. Their precise destination was a small booming spaceport named Yuma. They were to make contact with some administrator there who represented Patience in this deal. The cargo was secure and everything was still going fine, until a derelict ship, which Hot Green had until then ignored as it was too far out of their way, lit its engines and set course to intercept the Lucky Rocket! The captain, Hot Green, Ian and Kazuya silently watched the ship as it headed straight for them, forcing their pilot to push the engines to their full capacity.

The chase taxed Hot Green’s resources as a pilot, especially as the preying ship’s engines appeared to be quite more powerful than their dingy RAF-6D. If you care about those things, the magnetic grappler jutting from the baddies’ ship nose did add a bit of difficulty to Hot Green’s evasive maneuvers. While their stressed out pilot (“I didn’t sign up for this! I shoulda stayed on Boros with those bored marines!”) was focusing her attention towards their escape, the first mate Ian was hailing every ship around on the comm-links without much success. The Captain for his part was riveted to the screens, muttering under his breath and starting to sweat profusely. With a loud swear he smashed his fist into the console and grabbed the mick, opening the ship’s intercom:

“Everyone this is your Captain speaking. I want all of you to grab your stuff and head towards the shuttles. Don’t ask questions and hurry up! Captain out”. Turning towards Kazuya, he told him to go with the others and to try to find a way to stay alive, adding “I thrust you with this crew. We’ve got Reavers coming up our ass and I don’t want to see them all die uselessly. Now ye need to grab what you need and take one of the shuttles. Get everyone safe; we’re almost on Whitefall anyways so the limited space onboard won’t be a problem. I just hope you’ll pull through atmo alright, those tin-cans weren’t meant to face that kind of heat—“.

At this point the Captain was interrupted by a horrible wrenching sound as the ship was torn apart, the alarms starting seconds later as the blast doors closed to prevent the pressured environment to dissipate into the black. The grapple had latched onto the rear port side of the ship, tearing off one of the engines. Hot Green lost control of the ship as the thrust power failed, leaving them spiraling helpless as the Reaver’s derelict got nearer.

The Captain shoved everyone out of the cockpit so they could leave in a shuttle while he desperately tried to hotwire the ship to get back some mobility. Kazuya, Hot Green and Ian met Chang and Jack near their cabins, already heaving stuff towards safety. Chang told them with a blank face that Dan had been sucked through the hole as he was working in the engine room before starting to run in his old sandals to catch up with Jack.

"Pour your misery down on me, why dontcha!" shouts the girl known as Hot Green. The target of her vocal wrath is the overhead metal rather than anyone in particular. She had a shiny guitar case in hand already, as it's always in the cockpit with her and it was her first thought to snatch it upon finally relinquishing the ship's controls. She dashed to her cabin despite any voices to the contrary. In under seven seconds she strapped an already zipped and full backpack on, grabbed a second guitar case and kissed a picture of her own pretty face on a wall-sized poster goodbye. One could tell she at least halfway expected this day to come.

She rejoined the others and made haste to the shuttle. Throwing down her sturdy gear she prepped the makeshift escape pod for takeoff and hollered to the others as the engines warmed. Sound off and count off boys, Thunder Birds Are Go!

Unsettled by the last five catastrophic minutes, Jack struggled to keep his head cold. "Don't forget your cigars, don't forget your cigars, don't forget your cigars", he kept thinking as he hurriedly threw t-shirts as well as dress coats into a dufflebag. It already contained his "weaponry" (a handgun, a couple of smoke grenade and his bulletproof jacket), his makeup-kit-for-hasty-disguises and some food supplies.

He was running for his life when a metallic *CLANG* stopped him cold. Rushing back to the cabin to retrieve the iron box that had fallen to the ground, he murmured a "Don't worry babe I'll never leave you behind", before kissing the small box filled with a dozen cigars.

Moments later, he hauled his stuff in the shuttle. "All those petty things would mean nothing to me if I didn't have such a pretty face, eh", he said with a wink to the other occupants. But his attempt at easing the situation sounded fake, as his concerns for the seemingly doomed future of the crew were flagrant in his face.

Ian bolted. As soon as the order was given he shot out of the cockpit, ripping off the comset and bolting to his room. Blowing past anyone in his way, Ian shouldered into his bunk, tossed on his shoulder bag stocked with Fire Jelly, nutrient bars, and a weeks worth of canned food, tossed the spices into it from his drawer and his gun cleaning and gun vac cases. He was going to have to leave some of the ammo behind, and that pissed Ian right the **** off. He had JUST paid that feh feh pi goh for those shotgun shells, and that rifle ammo didn't come cheap either! He still had on of the crates the shells had come in, and tossed 4 boxes of rifle ammo and 2 boxes of shotgun ammo in it. His shotgun in is hip holster and his rifle slung across his back, Ian heaved the crate up onto his shoulder and ran to the shuttle. Dumping the ammo box, and counting heads, Ian saw a glaring discrepency.

Ian growled to Hot Green, "Make SURE this things ready, I'll be right back. I think that sah gwa yi dwei do buen chuo roh means to go down with the old girl!" Dropping his bag, box, and guns, Ian took off again, this time back for the cockpit with blinding speed, leaping over obstacles in his way to get to the captain. He heard Rifte's voice off to his right as he ran,
"Captain gave you an order. Best be following them, seeing as your the first mate and all. Wouldn't want chaos and anarchy taking over the ship, would we?"" Ian sneered under his mask and called out, his deep voice ringing through the groaning hull of the ship, "Can't follow orders from a dead man!" Swearing the whole way, Ian burst through the cockpit door and confronted the man that lead the ship as long as he'd been on it. Cap'n may have been an incompetent drunk, but he was the captain, needed to be stuck by."Damn fool, let's GO! The gorram shuttle's waitin'! Get off your ass and leave the ship be, no need for you to die like a wong ba duhn! You comin' peacable or I gotta HAUL your fool ass?"

Kazuya grimaced as the door banged shut behind him, the flash of what happened coming like a searing headache. "Ni ta ma de. Tianxia suoyoude ren. Dou gaisi." he whispered, slamming his bare knuckled fist into the steel grating of his room.

"Goram reavers. Goram captain. Goram ship." he said, climbing up the ladder and moving back down the hallway, silently smoldering about the circumstances. The captain's words still rang true in his mind, ricocheting off the interior of his psyche. What buisness did he have being captain? Not that he didn't want to be, but... not now. Not at the cost of life. Well, at least the lives of people he liked.

Swinging back past the deck, he saw Ian moving towards where the captain was, and could tell the man was spoiling for a fight. "Oh, juh jen sh guh kwai luh duh jean jan..." he swore under his breath, eyes trying to read some sense in Ian's actions.

"Captain gave you an order. Best be following them, seeing as your the first mate and all. Wouldn't want chaos and anarchy taking over the ship, would we?" he asked, just as a piece of the metal plating above his head exploded in a shower of sparks and metal, bangs and booms echoing from the entire ship.

Blazing past Kazuya, Ian headed directly for the cockpit. only to find the door securely locked. Punching the door in anger, he opened the comm-link to swear at the Captain, urging him to let go of the gorram ship. When his rant came to an end, he had to wait an excruciating long time for some answer to make its way back.

"You know Ian... s'not nice to order... your Capt'n around like that... One could... hic... believe... that you don't... trust me... any more than a... gaoyang zhong de guyang". The voice of the inebriated Captain came distorted through the buzzing comm-link. "Now be a good... lad and... just go... I ain't going nowhere... I'll just wait for you guys nice and comfy... Just don't forget to check for traps... when you come back... I don't want to end like that!" spat the Captain. The link was then turned off.

Onboard the shuttle, everything is ready to go, but it might be an idea to fang pi jien tah duh guay as the Reavers were getting uncomfortably close! Hot Green was all set to detach the shuttle from the Lucky Rocket, only awaiting the word by whoever was in command. Chang had just arrived a minute earlier, pushing his bulky mechanic's tools on a small cart and with Kazuya's help, was able to secure them at the back of the ship. The monk had not said much since announcing his assistant's death and his eyes were glazed over with sadness or... guilt. Jack was pacing around, anxious to lift off and get on their tyen-sah way to Whitefall.

Everyone was tense as they waited for Ian and the Captain to get back. They could see the Reaver's ship closing in now more slowly towards the lazily spinning Rocket on the screens.

"This. Is. Not. My idea of a good time.
This. Is. Not. My idea of a good time."

Hot Green has the main engine idling. Any more and it might be tough for Ian and Le Capitan to board. One door is still open, awaiting their arrival.
Would ya mind sittin' down n' strappin' in there Jacko? The rest of you Boys are bound to be boardin' now, can't have ya bouncing off each other's machismo and out tha door.
She gives a wink and places her free hand on the shuttle door control switch with her steering hand still on the piloting sticka'.

Ian roared in anger, slamming a fist into the cockpit door. Jamming a thumb down ontot e comm button, Ian spoke one last time. "You're a gorram fool old man... We'll miss you..." Releasing the comm, Ian took off for the waiting shuttle, oddly silent behind the mask that hid his expression from the world. As he entered the packed craft, Ian took a seat and strapped in. "Cap'n's not comin', take this gorram thing outta here NOW Green!"

((That order is assuming everyone else is on board.))

'As Heaven is wide, as angels can fly.' responds the fiery redhead in her somehow still calm, lyrical usual way, She pulls the door switcha' and fires up the secondary engines as she states this, and within seconds the shuttle is no longer docked.

'But aye, be knowin' all birds fly best on the fuel of kindess.' HG blows a kiss towards some shiny reflective panel as she pulls the shuttle out of the now open hangar bay.

Chang moves with a slight hurry, but with nowhere near the panic of his comrades as he gathers up necessary tools and wheels them to the shuttle. Lifting the cart into the shuttle with more strength than his frame belies, Chang then secures the wheels and takes out his pointed straw hat. Tying it under his chin, the monk bows his head as Ian announces the Captain's fate. Carefully smoothing and arranging his robes, he says "As the leaf falls swiftly in the still wind, may the Buddha guide our Captain to his fate."

Kazuya let Ian go, his face forming into a slight grimace as the man disobeyed orders. He had always liked Ian for his loyalty, and thought his caring nature was praise worthy when it came to the crew, but now he saw the ugly side of it. In the situation, the captain was doing what was needed, what had to be done and should be done by the leader of the group. That was something Ian should know, something he should respect in the face of the danger they were all in. If he couldn't, then he would die with the captain.

Sliding back into the pod, he buckles up, closing his eyes and folding his arms over the blade tucked closely next to his chest. Jack and Chang soon followed, as Green played with the controls more, preparing for the adventure that would be re-entry into the planet's atmosphere.

Ian came back just as they were preparing to leave, his face flushed with color and eyes showing a good deal of determination. He barked orders, sitting down across from Kazuya, preparing himself for the oncoming onslaught of gravitational force.

Kazuya would have to talk to Ian. The captain had made it clear in the past few weeks, and even with is dying words that he was passing the ship and crew onto him should fate deal him an unlucky hand. It would not be pleasant dealing with the hot head, not in light of all that had happened and was sure to occur in the oncoming days.

Turning in her seat to make sure that everyone was strapped in, Hot Green lit the three small engines of the shuttle and disengaged from the ship. The Lucky Rocket continued its course, spinning slowly in the vastness of space. After having put some distance between themselves and the Reavers, the rocking pilot entered Whitefall’s coordinates into the computer, sighing in relief. She directed their craft towards the small moon and laid back.

The rest of the crew saw the tension leaving Hot Green’s body and they knew they were out of trouble—for now. Most of them allowed themselves to relax a bit too, the last few minutes having been pretty intense for everyone. Kazuya went to stand beside the pilot’s seat, looking over the various readings, before setting his eyes on the radar. "Hmm…. Hot? If that’s the Lucky Rocket, and I’m pretty sure ‘cause it moves like a guo cao de frog, then that would be –", the Japanese man began, but Hot Green swiftly turned her head towards the screen, muttering “Lucky like a falling star!” as she then peered through the left porthole. The Reavers were coming after them.

"A flash in the pan." said Hot Green, upon realizing she had created a perfectly parallel line involving three objects in space. The Reavers were point A, The Rocket was point B, and the Shuttle was point C in this Line AC with B as the bisecting dot when viewed from afar. That's how her first astrogation lessons were taught anyway. She sometimes missed being seven or nine.

"A storm in a teacup." she muttered with a frowny, yet still alluring face, as the Reavers had blown past the now defunct homestead and loomed towards them.

"A needle in a haystack." beamed HG, instantly flashing a smile as she flipped a previously untouched switch. The ship lunged forward as the tri-force engines kicked into overdrive.

'A prize for the winning, A catch for the chasing." Surely she meant the shuttle as a potential Reavers' reward while she leaned her heart, soul, and curves into the piloting sticka'. No radar was needed for the crew to know she was heading straight towards Whitefall, full speed ahead, at potentially terminal velocity.

"A dead for the raising...yeah...that's it. They not botha with an on world scavenge. Not from what I heard. Someone get some gummy tape and strappa down all tha gear. I got us a plan!"

It seems she's speaking to hear her own self think rather than let everyone in on her thought process. But wait, she couldn't be speaking of crashing on purpose to avoid the Reavers now, could she?

Hot Green started pushing the small engines more and more, accelerating at tremendous speed and leaving the Reavers in the stardust. After a while though, Chang began to hear some humming noises from behind him. He was about to speak up when a loud bang surprised everyone and HG lost some thrust power! One of the engines had overheated. The other two were trying to compensate for the loss but their fate would be the same if nothing was done.

Most of the other crewmembers felt quite useless at this point. Stuck in space in the small craft and with the Reavers on their tail, tension growing was inevitable. Only Chang had jumped from his seat, trying to access the shuttle's core to find out what may be done. Cursing gloomily the loss of his assistant, the wiry man was unbolting some protective pannels at the back, using simple tools as the powerered versions would only divert some power from the main interface."Is there even something to be done?" he thought, his arms tiring rapidly at the harduous task.

The loss of thrust did not translate into a loss of brute speed though. Whitefall was fast approaching, but with an engine missing, there was only so much Hot Green could do to smooth the ride. The Reavers were quickly catching up too and they'd need all their luck not to end up as their next meal!

Chang hauls up one of the floor panels to access the area underneath. Looking at the tangled and fused mess of pipes and wires, he shakes his head. Rolling up his sleeves he reaches in and begins feeling around. Frowning, he takes hold of a wrench from his tool kit and reaches in again, but with no more luck. Finally with a harrumph of frustration, the monk gives the core workings a few good ringing whacks with the metal wrench. But it is all for naught, as the engine remains resolutely cold. "We are lost and adrift, as the oil drop upon the puddle." he says, strapping himself back in.
