Campaign Setting

This campaign will take place in the Southern Realm of the continent of Elthine. It is In terms of size, we're talking something like South America--maybe not quite as big--with the Southern Realm comprising everything south of, say, Bolivia. That should give you an idea of the scale.a vast and complex world, much of which has yet to see the Light of Civilization.

Elthine's Southern Realm is a relatively untamed land, in comparison with its Northern counterpart. The South is characterized by towering mountain ranges, rolling hills and sprawling forests. There is but one place, along the continent's Eastern coast, where the land dips low enough to greet the sea with a rocky beach. The landscape is dotted with countless lakes, rivers and forests, But it's worth noting that there are countless smaller lakes, rivers, forests, etc. that aren't depicted on the map.the largest of which are depicted on the map below. The Southern Realm is truly a land of beauty, and yet most Northerners tend to avoid travelling southward, not only because it has yet to become Civilized, but also because In keeping with the South America comparison, if the people in this world knew what an equator was, they'd know that this world's equator lies to the north. That is, as far as PCs and NPCs are concerned, north=warm and south=cold. But still, it's not like this game takes place in the Arctic Circle or anything. It's a temperate climate. Warm summers, cool winters, with the odd snowstorm and that sort of thing.it grows colder as one approaches the Far Reaches.

Below is a map of the Southern Realm, with brief descriptions of major settlements and landmarks.

Carthas and Surrounding Area

The first phase of the campaign will be centered geographically around the city of Carthas. The landscape is full of rivers, forests and hills that don't appear on the map below, and the land is inhabited by countless peoples. Known semi-permanent encampments are marked with tents.

Below is a map of the area surrounding Carthas, with brief descriptions of notable settlements and landmarks.

Carthas, City of Salvation

The campaign will begin in the walled city of Carthas, dubbed the City of Salvation. In fact, over its long history, the city has been called by many different names and been inhabited by many different people. It was originally founded by hill dwarves, claiming to be the first of their kind to venture out of the mountains. The city was eventually destroyed by a rival clan of dwarves, and has since been rebuilt and destroyed a handful of times. Before being rebuilt by the Empire, Carthas was most recently inhabited by marauders known as the Gith, who had taken it by force from the humans that lived there before them. The Imperial Army's capture of the city, following a long siege, was a major step forward in the Empire's southward expansion. The Gith were scattered to the winds and Carthas was safe again.

Under the Empire, Carthas was rebuilt with drastically-improved fortifications, and is home to a sizable garrison of well-trained soldiers charged with the protection of its citizens. It now stands as a bastion of Civilization, welcoming all those who were driven away by the Gith. The city was declared the center of a barony under Imperial rule, and settlers--both those that had migrated from the North and those whose ancestors had been displaced by the Gith--flocked to Carthas. The city became a safe haven for anyone seeking refuge and prosperity, earning it the title "City of Salvation." The title was admittedly a little self-aggrandizing, sure, but for most of its citizens, the City of Salvation had earned its name.

Below is a map of Carthas, with brief descriptions of noteworthy locations and landmarks.
