Raena's Choice

Portsdale,

the bustling city you've known your whole life. Rescued from its streets at a young age, fortune now finds you at its State Dinner, honoring all of the 12-year-old nobles of the city. The 12th birthday matters a great deal. This is when the ordinary folk take up their trade as an apprentice. Of course, you're under no such obligation, being from a noble house, and your education is longer than the common rabble. Never the less, the 12 year is a significant year, and you enter the hall large marble hall in sparkling formal attire, escorted by your father Lord Oddwalls, who bends as low as you reach up high to lock arms with you.

You will be paraded by the Mayor and upper royal Lords for a bow, before a formal dance with your father. You will then be free to move about the room. You expect your family will take a seat quickly, they have little patience these days for gossip, what with Sir Streggs at his usual work. Perhaps you join them, perhaps you are eager to speak to a few friends; you seldom see them all in one place. There's the brash young Aribella Rose Darkins, you call her Ari, to her parent's dismay, but it fits her better than her given name. There's the charming Elias Stonall, who you would like to know better if it weren't for his friendship with the detestable Wylliam. Of course there is Jasmyn Bolder, stone cold in demeanor, but a welcome sight since her family is the only one with more rumors circulating about them than your own at the moment.

OODMNarrate the ceremony, and talk about what your character does after the formalities end. Do you speak to your friends? Stay with your family? Go for the buffet table?

If you're going to write something out of character, put it in a "fieldset box" titled "OOC" or wrap it in a spoiler tag titled "OOC"

It amazed Raena how dignified her father managed to look, even while walking around bent at the waist to accommodate her low reach. Of course, the posture itself was as undignified as they come, but something about the confidence with which he walked and the warmth with which he smiled made it seem as though nobles were never meant to walk any other way. Raena was relieved. The last thing she wanted was to be the cause of embarrassment for her father.

Doing her best to match his confidence, Raena walked with her father until they stood before the Mayor and the upper royal Lords. As she bowed, a doubt began to itch in her head. She crushed it swiftly. I have every right to be here. I am an Oddwalls as much as my sister and brothers who stood here before me. I am a noble. The doubt never bothered her for long, but over the years, she found herself having to crush it more and more frequently. Participating in this ceremony, she hoped, would put it to rest for good.

Next, Raena followed her father to the dancing floor. There was much less working against the dignity of the dance than that of the walk. True, the size difference was still a factor when managing the distance of steps, but her father had practiced tirelessly with her until the shorter steps required of him came more naturally than the usual longer ones. Raena was enjoying herself a lot, dancing before an audience with her father. She hoped the rest of the dinner proved to be as enjoyable.

All too soon, the time came to move on from the dance. While she walked with her father toward where the rest of her family was seated, she spotted a few of her friends; namely Ari, Elias, and Jasmyn. She considered walking over to speak with Elias, but the thought that Wylliam might suddenly materialize from nowhere, standing beside his friend and challenging them to a contest to see who could land a leap from the tallest fixture, filled her with dread.

"Father," Raena said, letting go of her father's arm, "I'll join you at the table soon. I'd like to speak with Jasmyn for a bit."

She didn't know the exact details, due to her refusal to participate in the gossip mongering of her peers, but it seemed the Bolder family were dealing with a burden of rumors fit to rival her own family's. It disgusted Raena that people who would claim nobility would spend time spinning foul tales about one another with no evidence. The nobility should embody the best aspects of people, but for whatever reason, gossip was an excused sin.

She walked over to her friend. "Good evening, Jasmyn," Raena greeted, smiling, "This ceremony has certainly been lovely, and the food set out looks incredible. Have you had a chance to try anything?"

Jasmyn stood quietly to the side, of the dance floor. Raena could see the barest trail of a tear on her cheek that had been wiped away. Jasmyn's father had fled the dance floor rather quickly, and she was not yet ready to rejoin her family at the table. Her hair was carefully arranged to cover the increasingly obvious pointed ears that neither her father or mother share. Whatever that meant, Raena seems to have chosen not to wonder.

Jasmyn's face brightened notably, relieved for a familiar face in the crowd of nobles she is unaccustomed to joining, though she did not muster a smile, she clasped your hands firmly inhers. "Good evening, Raena" she said, her resolve growing, "I'm afraid I haven't got an appetite yet, but I will, before the night's over."

Behind Jasmyn, you see that Aribella has struck up a conversation with Elias, and sure enough Wylliam appeared soon after, talking of his grand plans to sail to Eastwind Isles as soon as the spring arrives, acting out his pirate fighting with plenty of bombast. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Two-Coins wander into the room timidly, she appears to be looking around for your parents' table.

"Good," Raena replied, squeezing the hands that grasped hers. "Though... I suggest doing what you can to hurry your appetite along. It looks like Wylliam has finally made his presence known. That is usually enough for me to lose my appetite for a week."

Raena felt the relief of one who had just barely been missed by an arrow. Had she gone to talk to anyone else, she could have been suffering Wylliam's tactless display from up close, instead of from this socially safe distance.

"Well, while your appetite prepares itself, would you like to walk around the hall and talk for a bit? It feels like ages since we-"

Raena trailed off as she spotted Two-Coins move discreetly through the hall. She appeared to be looking for someone. And that someone could only be Mother, Raena thought. For Two-Coins to seek Mother out during the State Dinner, it must be work related, and not of the mislaid paperwork variety. Raena returned her attention to Jasmyn.

"Er, please forgive my rudeness, but the woman over there works for my mother. Would you excuse me while I help her find our table? I'll return before long."

Raena hated leaving Jasmyn alone so quickly after greeting her, but there was clearly a serious matter afoot, and Raena had to admit she was quite curious as to what it might be. She made her way nimbly through the tables and people until she reached her destination.

"Two-Coins, is everything alright? Our table is over here," Raena said, waving for Two-Coins to follow her.

Two-Coins smiled at Raena, clearly relieved to see a friendly face. "Thanks," she says barely making eye contact, in contrast to her boisterous style of fencing, this was clearly not her preferred arena, she followed sheepishly, trying her best to avoid meeting the eyes of anyone in the room. She mumbled as you walk, "It's nothing really, just some news for your mother"

When the two reach the table, Raena's mother had already spotted the two coming across the room. She was always on the look-out, and always sat facing the door if possible. She was frowning disapprovingly, "must be bad to get you in this room dear" she said with a hallow laugh that betrayed real concern.

"Yes, Ma'am" Two-Coins muttered quietly, "do you think we could step outside"
"Not tonight, Two-Coins," your mother said wearily, "can't you just tell me here, they're talking as it is", she said gesturing vaguely to a few tables across the room. "Ma'am, it's about Nicholas".

Everything seemed to slow for Lady Oddwalls, she spoke deliberately, "Fair enough, let's step out". Then she flashed brief frown at Lord Oddwalls, then smiled at Raena, "I'll be right back dear."

Trying to lighten the mood, Raena's sister Jonice spoke up, "so dear, how's it feel to be an adult?"
"Yeah," Raena's brother Josair piped up, "you're as old as I am", snapping his fingers, he turned his hair grey, and the tingling up Raena's shoulder made her suspect he had done the same to her. Everyone else at the table was doing their best to ignore the trick, though you thought you saw Lord Oddwalls crack a smile.

"Just as old, but a lot more mature, apparently," Raena said cooly, with only the tiniest hint of malice. She pulled out her chair and climbed into it. Accommodations had already been made so that, while sitting, she could at least see over the table's edge. "It would be much appreciated if you undid your spell. I won't be quick to forgive if every conversation I have tonight starts with an explanation of my new hair color."

She returned her attention to Jonice and grinned. "Honestly? It's exciting. Though, at the same time... it's intimidating. You and Jokhain have set the bar rather high for Josair and me!" Raena gave a little laugh, then continued. "Still, if I'm going to call myself an Oddwalls, then I'll be sure to live up to that name."

Speaking of names, Raena thought, I didn't recognize that name Two-Coins mentioned. It would be severely improper to try and follow her mother in an attempt to eavesdrop, but she was becoming more and more curious. She waited until her father and brother began talking to each other, then leaned toward Jonice and said quietly, "By the way, did you recognize that Nicholas name? It must really be something to make Mother step outside."

"You most certainly will live up to our name, Raena" Lord Oddwalls said smiling, "So will Josair, which is why he's going to undo his little gag so as not to ruin a fine evening."

At the gentle admonishment, though not without grumbling something about Raena's lack of good humor, Josair snapped his fingers again and the tingling returned for a moment. Josair's lack of mirth seems to imply that the hair has returned to normal, though he left his new look as-is.

On the subject of Nicholas, Jonice spoke up quickly, "You know mother's work, she can't always share all the goings on." Though if anyone know something, it surely would be Jonice who has accompanied Lady Oddwalls in her work on occasion to hone her abilities. "I think I've heard the name," Jokhain said to no one in particular, as if trying to recall its significance, but his train of thought was cut short by a kick to the shin from Jonice under the table. "Ah, but never mind that, the food's arriving already" Jonice said, apparently changing the subject waiters arrive with plates piled high with seafood from the bay

Jonice was right that her mother's work often involved sensitive information that, if not carefully guarded, could disrupt an ongoing operation. If tipped off, a target might flee. Or worse, set an ambush. Lady Oddwalls often says that secrecy saves more of her agents' lives than armor. Still, Raena could keep a secret just as well as Jonice and Jokhain. Why should she have to remain in the dark?

The food arrived, and was, of course, delicious. With some effort, Raena managed to keep her mind off the amazing taste, and on how to get some more info out of her siblings. After clearing most of her plate, she had as good a plan as she could reasonably come up with. If Jonice wanted to treat her like a child, a child she could be.

Trying to look as if on the brink of tears with worry, Raena whispered pleadingly to Jonice, "Is Nicholas really dangerous? Is Mother going to be okay? I know she's really good, but what if this Nicholas is more than even she can handle?" Raena was convinced, of course, that whoever this Nicholas was, her mother could handle him perfectly fine. Still, for the matter to be important enough to draw Lady Oddwalls from the dinner, Raena couldn't help but feel a little genuine uncertainty.

OOCSince I'm assuming a 0 level 12 year old doesn't have any proficiencies or above average stats, I just rolled a flat d20.
