Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves
-Confucius

Chicago, 2010. 2:32 am The unusual silence of the summer night in Chicago was shattered as two bodies collided with a large glass window of a skyscraper, sending shards of glass and fragments of steel raining down on the near vacant streets below. There was no sound from the combatants, no taunts or cries of pain or speeches involving evil plots or justice being served - only the distorted bursts from eye lasers searing flesh and the sickening crack of bones. Laying now in a pool of shattered glass and his own blood, The Phenom coughed a lungful of crimson onto the office carpet and slowly began to struggle to his feet.

His attacker seemed intent on disallowing this, delivering a powerful kick to the hero's ribs that sent him flying clean through the drywall of the office and into the building's hallway on the other side. The Phenom was finally given a good look at his enemy's face as he stepped through the newly created hole in the office wall, and his stomach instantly twisted in complicated knots as he recognized Captain Liberty.

Silently, Liberty stooped and lifted The Phenom off the ground with one hand, throwing his right back to deliver another bone-smashing blow. Just before his fist was about to make contact, The Phenom managed to disappear and reappear behind Liberty, quickly jumping onto his back and wrapping his arms around the Captain's massive neck and shoulders.

The Phenom's face twisted in confusion and panic behind his mask as he attempted to use his absorption ability but found it ineffective. Cursing aloud, the air was wretched from the hero's lungs as Liberty leapt backwards through the wall, smashing and sandwiching Phenom's body as he continued to fly through the remaining drywall barriers and back out through another pane of tempered glass. Coming to a stop in mid air, the Phenom unconsciously melted off Liberty's back and began a free fall to the ground below.

This was not the end of The Phenom's torment, however. Swooping down at supersonic speed, Liberty's feet struck The Phenom's chest and drove his body into the concrete, creating a crater about six or seven feet deep. Climbing uninjured from the smoking hole, Captain Liberty dragged The Phenom's Lifeless body into the street, holding him by the scruff of his costume's neck.

"Finally." He muttered, dropping the corpse of his arch nemesis at his feet, "Rest in peace, my only worthy foe."

New York General HospitalThe first thing Max is aware of once he finally regained consciousness was the fact that he wasn't wearing his mask. Looking around, he noticed that he was in a hospital room, and wearing the Blueman suit from the neck down.

"I tried to convince them to keep your mask on," A pretty nurse says once she realizes Max was awake, "They wouldnt have any of it - you've been drifting in and out for hours."

Max shot up into a seated position, his face instantly twisting in agony as his body screamed in protest.

"Whoa there tiger, take it easy you've been through alot." The nurse says, bringing Max a glass of water, "Do you remember anything about what happened at the bank? They weren't sure if you were going to make it for a while there, they figure somebody beat you half to death and just left you there." The nurse seems to be more curious about the events that put Max here than concerned about his injuries.

The bank. Memories started to flow back like a violent river.

Blueman was the first hero on the scene, and grinned under his mask as he realized it. He was worried that he would arrive too late to actually make a difference. Gaining access through roof vents was easy enough, and through the grate covering he counted 10 hostages, two of which were children. Five armed gunman. Once the opportunity came, Blueman dropped down through the air duct onto the first robber, knocking him unconscious with his body weight. Scooping up the gunman's AK47, Blueman squeezed off a burst of rounds that took the nearest robber by surprise and dropped him to the floor with a sharp cry. Dropping the rifle, Blueman turned and nailed a third gunman with an energy blast from his left hand, knocking the robber on to the ground and out of the fight. Ducking low under a charging gunman's rifle butt, Blueman fluidly delivered a nasty elbow to the robber's knee, dropping him before he even got the chance to realize what had happened. Grabbing the rifle as it fell from the man's grip, Blueman swung it back and into the gunman's face with a golf-swing, knocking him unconscious.

'Where's the fifth guy!?' he wondered as he drew his pistol and made his way over to where the hostages were tied in a tight circle.

"Big mistake, you f*ckin' clown!" Came a thunderous shout from the back of the bank.

Looking back, Blueman stood to his full height and recognized Landkill as the villain removed the black balaclava that had allowed him to blend in with the others.

"Who the hell are you?" The villain asked, walking toward Blueman, "You think you're ready to bang with with big boys?"

"That sounded wierd." Blueman commented out loud, leveling his pistol at Landkill.

The villain laughed, and without warning lifted his right foot up and brought it thundering down with a force that shook the building by it's very foundation. Blueman's danger sense warned him a quarter second too late to allow him to avoid a falling beam, which struck him in the back and pinned him to the floor. Pain exploded through his body, causing the hero to cry out in agony and frustration. With the beam pressing against his left shoulder, Blueman was just able to pull his right arm free and aim his pistol at the charging Landkill. The one round he managed to squeeze off simply deflected off Landkill's armor-like skin, and before Blueman knew it the villain was on top of him. Tossing the beam aside like it was nothing with one hand and slapping the pistol out of Blueman's grip with the other, Landkill mounted the hero and began pounding his face with hammer fists. Using every inch of his super strength, Blueman shoved the villain as hard as he could to free up his hands and place his palms flat on Landkill's chest, unleashing a savage blast of energy. The force sent Landkill reeling, a smoking hole in the villain's black jacket reveals the villain's rock-like chest.

"Come on hero!" One of the female hostages cried, "Kick his a*s!"

Blueman sensed the attack coming but couldnt will his body to react in time as Landkill scooped him up and delivered a trio of savage blows before tossing the hero to the ground at his feet. With a sinister, arrogant laugh, Landkill brought both fists down hard on the hero's head as he attempted to use his flight to escape, causing his lifeless body to bounce into the view of the hostages. His costume had been torn in a few places, and not much remained of his mask. The flesh beneath the tattered rag was bruised, battered and swollen, looking more like a side of beef than a man's face.

"Look at your hero now!" Was the last thing Max remembered Landkill saying.

"I need to get out of here," Max tells the nurse, pushing the sheets off but struggling to stand, "I need to get out of here now."

The nurse's face seems understanding. She knows the police are on their way, with padded trucks and containment rifles. Moving to the window, she pushes it open before hurrying to the room's door to make sure nobody was coming. Max's legs were shaky at first but he could tell that he didn't have any serious breaks or fractures, a miracle by any measure. Grabbing one of the towels that sat near the bed, Max tore it in half and wrapped it around the bottom of his face, throwing one of his legs painfully over the edge.

"You have some internal bleeding - try to stay off your feet for a few days, and don't do anything too strenuous." The nurse says, "And take this!" she tossed him a garbage bag wrapped in duct tap, nodding a silent goodbye as Max slipped out the window and flew to the ground below.

Every muscle in Max's body screamed as he flew, dropping to the grass on both knees. The strain of flight was mildly intense on a good day, but with Max's injuries it was excruciating. Going through the garbage bag of his belongings, Max recovered his pistol and tattered mask, slipping it on in replacement of the towel.

The cab ride was interesting at best, and Max was surprised that it took the driver the entire journey to realize that it was doubtful the masked man in the back seat was going to pay. As the cab neared a park in Max's neighborhood, he opened the door and leapt out as it made a right hand turn, landing on the sidewalk less gracefully than he had hoped. From there it was simply a matter of outrunning the driver, laying low for five or ten minutes, and slipping back into his house. The hard part was going to be explaining why he looked like he had just been hit by a truck.

Karl steps out of his small apartment and walks to a small nearby diner for breakfast. Taking a seat he opens a newspaper and begins scanning through it, trying to catch up on American events. It had been a long time since Karl had been in America, a lifetime in fact. Interrupted by a waitress for his order he responds, Ham and bacon set please. No need to rush, I'm in no hurry. He returns to the paper before the irony of what he had just said hit him. No need to rush, I'm in no hurry. He realizes his sense of time is already failing without those he cared for to anchor it. Three days since Emily died and he had found nothing to lead him to the two gangs responsible.

Returning to the paper Karl reads the front page. Surprised by an amateur photo of of Captain Liberty standing in a smoking hole with a dead The Phenom he begins to contemplate how the underworld and government alike would react to such an event. He doesn't get far however before his breakfast arrives. Karl eats slowly while reading the rest of the paper. He then pays for the meal, tipping generously, before leaving in his search of answers.

Perhaps today he will find the answers he seeks surrounding Emily's death.

Celia suddenly sits up from a deep slumber, gasping for breath as she looks around her familiar bedroom in horror. Nothing seemed amiss physically with the room, but that didn't stop her from searching her thoughts....... then she realizes.

Someone she is closely familiar with..... something is amiss. Despite not knowing exactly what is wrong, she quickly slips into her jeans & shirt, grabs her mini notebook computer, and hustles out the door..... snagging her coat on the way out......

Celia feels compelled........ but to do what exactly, she's not certain......

The Daily Star News - This just in!News of The Phenom's death is on the lips of everyone, and rumors run like wild fire. The image of Captain Liberty, garbed in the same patriotic uniform he wore when he fought crime and trained America's heroes, standing over America's slain champion is one that many find disturbing. His return to the public eye is perhaps the most shocking development, as previously he was thought to have been killed. Since The Phenom's death, Liberty has not been seen publicly, and there are rumblings that the government is coordinating a nationwide search for the former icon.

Funeral proceedings for The Phenom will be held at his former home in Chicago, where two weeks ago he was confronted and slain by Captain Liberty in a heated battle that ended over Chicago's moonlit streets. With collateral damage estimated in the millions, the Federal Bureau of MetaHuman Affairs Director Howard Miller has stated that no expense will be spared in bringing this criminal to justice.

Chicago, 2010. 4:23 amCelia will find that the morning air is crisp, colder than usual. There is a strange emptiness in your thoughts, like an eye has been closed in your consciousness. You suddenly realize with a sickening flip flop of your stomach that you can no longer connect with the willing mind of The Phenom. Suddenly, you notice that the streets are unusually crowded for so early. A cab driver pulls up, and as if sensing your confusion rolls down his window.

"Hey lady, you need a lift?" he asks, poking his head out to lock eyes with you, "Everybody's headed downtown, some kind of Superhero fight. Pretty bad by the sounds of it."

Maybe it was all this paranoia, confusion in the air in the wake of Captain Librity's return. Maybe it was that nothing felt the same now; that the sense of the past being in the past had evaporated overnight, and now heroes were on the front pages again in a negative spotlight. Maybe he just needed to get his mind off it, to feel what it means to be a hero again. A real superhero. Not this political, comercialized... he tried to stop himself there, as usual, when the music hit.

It felt good to be wearing the Pulse costume again. It'd been weeks, almost a month since he'd been out on patrol. Things at the club getting busy, no time to explain bruises or miss work days. All excuses. His sixteen-year-old inner child was kicking him in the shin for long enough.

He opened his eyes, the wind ruffling his costume, inaudible to him over the throb coming from his headphones. The sidewalk was coming up fast now so he slowed his descent, placing a gloved hand on the glass surface of the nearby skyscraper to redirect his feet below him, then pushed off its surface with a gravity pulse, sending him flipping through the air to continue the process over again, going from building to building, post to post. It wasn't exactly flying, but Felix loved it, preferred it. The mixture of flight and fall, freedom and power... it was perfect.

He used to be able to lose himself this way. Just going with the music, doing laps around the city. If only he could get his head out of the headlines. Newspapers had never bothered him this much in the past. Why now? It was like his senses kept telling him to jump - with no place to land.

Just as that thought passes through his head, Pulse tucks his head into his body and goes into a roll, coming up on both feet at the edge of another lower building, perhaps four storeys high. The midday traffic was at its usual pitch, and people below had taken somewhat notice of him, snapping pictures with thier camera phones. He laughed softly under his mask at the slight thrill it gave him. Positive publicity was always encouraging. Bobbing his head from side to side with the music, he hopped from foot to foot for a moment to put a little show on, then leapt upwards and to the side in a summersault, launching himself skyward once he was completely inverted, his hand reaching down to touch the surface of the roof. He could see the people watching as he took off down the line.

The song changing to something a little less throbbing, Pulse slowed the pace and switched to more running than jumping, sliding under pipes and between buildings, skidding along the side of buildings... along the way, he was confident he'd feel better once there was superhero stuff to do.

On his way along the street, Pulse shoots past a young woman on street level that makes him do a double-take. Something about her is strikingly familiar, but he can't put his finger on it. Coming to a rest on the face of a building up ahead of her, Pulse levitates against the glass and waits, watching as the woman with the coat and computer passed beneath him. Where had he seen her face before?

William clutched the newspaper as he sat in a packed subway car. Seeing the picture of Captain Liberty stirred dark urges within him.
It seems that even great men fall into the clutches of evil
He's a murderor and he must be punished
All we have is a photo, without more evidence we cannot act. Plus you're just annoyed at not being on the front page.

Will turned deeper into the paper to find the latest Ripper article.

"I wonder if she'll finally call me about this?"

New YorkEven though Mason thinks of himself as one of if not the fast person in the world he can not always be everywhere at once. He has appearances he must maintain. While the robbery was taking place he was stuck in a boring board meeting. The only fighting taking place here was if the execs were going to get their raises or not. One suggestion brought up, which Mason fought hard to bring down, was cut the pay of all the lower employees make it look like we are saving so much money. Then as a reward for saving the company all this money we will give ourselves our raises.
When the meeting finally ajurned it was decided that no pay cuts were taking place & no raises were being give to anyone in the company. We can afford to lose a little money during these troubled times. In the end those who can't afford to weather the storm won't be losing anything & it makes it easier for them.
Mason was glad to be done. First thing he did was grab his backpack from his office & told his secretary he was going for a run & he'd be back after awhile. He leaves the office & hears of the robbery in progress. He quickly ducks into a back alley & changes into Black Lighning's costume. He arrives as some man is fighting the one that looks like he could be the one responsible. He quickly scans the area & sees Blueman laying in a pool of his own blood beaten & broken along with a group of 10 hostiges all tied up. Mason quickly freed the hostages. He told them "Hurry get out of here get to safety. Take Blueman with you as well"
Now to take care of this over grown gorilla. With that he heads back towards the fight.

New YorkKarl walks into the bank to withdraw money for the day moments before the robbery started. He was just finishing up when the robbers stormed the place. Karl decided to not try anything in order to ensure the safety of the other hostages but he remained prepared to step in if the robbery escalated.

It was only when the man another hostage identified as Blueman began having difficulty that he decided he couldn't wait any longer. Karl had no problems doing nothing as long as no one was hurt but his burning anger towards the gangs that killed his granddaughter refused to let him stand by as they killed Blueman. Karl steps forward and speaks up, Why don't you stop that boring game and play with me? That is if you're ready to play with the big boys? Karl laughs, knowing how it must look for what the onlookers must consider a child to be challenging a man who had already proven himself dangerous.

Chicago. Choice Chopsticks Restaurant.

[Broken Chinese]Yo, Uncle. Check this out.[/broken chinese]

Diego's voice nearly always betrayed the urgency of any given situation. Despite the headlines that drifted across the small tv in the corner of the restaurant, Diego's tone was a steadily tenor monotone. He was busy washing dishes in the back of the restaurant. "That dude Phenom caught it."

"Oh really?!" The short, stubby restaurant owner came up from a trap door behind the bar counter. The elderly man had finally begun to understand his adopted nephew's slang. By "caught it", he knew that Diego referred to a sexually transmitted disease or death. Pang could only deduce death. "How sad a situation...

Diego could feel Pang's sadness behind him. But Diego's own eyes were filled with a different emotion: Worry. Captain Liberty's face was an unsettling image to deal with. Two American icons involved in each other's bloodshed. Diego was far from an investigator, but he certainly wanted to know exactly what was going on. His thoughts began to cloud, which was obviously a great excuse to leave the shop for a moment.

"I'm gonna take a ride, Pang." His uncle nodded, eyes locked onto the television. Pang knew Diego's feelings well, and even knew he was involved somewhat in the superhero business. While he didn't understand the depths of his nephew's thoughts, he knew they were waters he didn't know how to cross. "Be back by dinner time if you can." "A'ight. I'll try." Even in english his voice was bereft of emotional undertone. It only took him a short moment to slip on his sling-style backpack and head out the door.

He was on his muted yellow motorcycle in no time, cruising at a moderate pace befitting of the increasing Chicago traffic. Unsurprisingly, he spotted Pulse making rounds in the air. That flyin' fag is showing off again. Diego's mood instantly turned sour as he revved his engine and took off down the street. I don't understand these damned supers. They're just like the cops. Government goodies or not. Diego had never considered himself a "super." Not only did he not consider himself powerful enough, but he also kept a lower-profile than many of the superpowerd humans that made their way into the media one way or another. Granted, his own costumed face had been on the news a few times, but he made a wide effort to handle more local problems than to get mixed up in the larger city affairs.

The doors to the police precinct swung open and two men, shabbily dressed, obviously hoodlums came stumbling through, a man dressed in all black following behind. The goons had their hands tied behind their backs with zip-cords. Their captor looked like a ninja assassin out of an old kung-fu movie. His feet were covered by simple cloth boots, he was clad in head to toe in a ninja gi, his head hooded with only his eyes exposed.

The officer at the front desk glanced up, and then went back to the paper he had been reading.

"What do you have for us today, Shadow?"

The officer said casually.

The two goons stumbled towards the desk urged on by a slight nudge from Shadow Stalker. As if out of nowhere, he retreived an SD card from one of the folds in his outfit. He tossed in on the desk and it landed right by the officer's left hand.

"Couple of muggers, got plenty of photo evidence on them. No harm to the victim other than a little shaken up."

the gruff voice came from the face concealed by the hood.

The officer took a little time to take in the thugs, noticing the bruises forming on their cheeks.

"Don't see any blood, guess they didn't fight back too hard this time." He let out a slow sigh and scooped up the SD card. "Well I'll get onto processing them." He tossed his paper to Shadow Stalker. "Take a look at the front page. Looks like he's back from the dead."

The officer came around the desk and started leading the goons away to booking as Shadow Stalker took in the picture of Captain Liberty holding The Phenom's body aloft. Tingles started running down his spine. The police scanner on the desk started to crackle.

"All units, robbery in progress, First Metro National. Hostages have been taken. Unregistered meta-human known as "Blueman" has been spotted in the vicinity..."

The rest of the report wasn't heard by anyone as the only signs that Shadow Stalker had even been there was the newspaper folded neatly on the desk and the front doors to the precinct swinging slightly.

=======

Shadow Stalker arrived on the scene just as Blueman was starting to have trouble with Landkill. He flashed his registration badge to the police surrounding the bank and walked right up the front steps. He took a quick peak around the corner through the glass front doors and saw Blueman laying on the ground, blood trickling out through the seams in his costume. A man who was obviously the villain and looked more like rock than man was slowly approaching a civilian that was standing bravely in front of him. The civilian looked to be a mere boy, rage began to fill up Shadow Stalker as he started to think about what might happen to the boy if he didn't intervene. Just as Landkill was about to respond to the boy's challenge, Shadow Stalker swung open the doors to the bank and held up his hands channeling all of his inner being through the focus his hands created and launching forth a blast of energy towards Landkill.

"The authorities have arrived, scumbag."
