Dangers Hidden in the Frontier

The former Army officer, Dyess Fortemeyer had been travelling around the landscape, surveying the various properties to purchase when he began noticing tracks from a strange creature. Maybe it was a Shoshone ploy trying to goad Fortemyer into crossing into no mans lands, maybe it was from an attempt by some band of bandits to set him into an ambush. Regardless of the reason for such action, the source that created this needed to be confronted.

Bigger still, the tracks were not human or any animal known to experienced trackers. They were heading into Crow territory and for three days half eaten carcasses were left to rot. Whatever it was it wasn't hunting for food and either the Army or the law needed to be notified.

My Name is NobodyHe looked at the direction the tracks were going from atop his horse. He threw his right leg over the saddlehorn so the back of his knee hooked around it and then looked down at the tracks. They looked normal enough in the way they followed the natural lay of the land, up that draw there, alongside the crick there... But, they didn't look right. He could see altering a few tracks along a path to mask them or throw a tracker off, but this wasn't that.

He slid off his horse, and went to crouch by the track, putting weight more on one leg than the other so his right knee was close to his chin.

He rested his chin on his knee, leaning over more as he pulled up the stem of a weed by his foot to trace the outline of the odd track.
He didn't like that he hadn't seen it before. He had seen an odd 3-toed bear before and even a racoon with a with one stub for a leg and another with an extra toe, but this was....

He didn't like it.

He wondered if he should go and check out the crow, let them know they may have a diseased animal or some such around.

He pulled a matchstick from a pocket and stuck it in the corner of his mouth. He'd prefer a smoke, but when

one was tracking, that was just plain dumb.

The three toes had claws like a cat, but considerably deeper than any cat much less one in this region of the country. The tracks were deep, deeper than a human or wolf...Like a three toed bison with claws, Dyes never saw a three toed bison with claws before much less one with four. Continuing his investigation, he found that the creature wasn't only traveling on all fours, it could also travel on its hind two legs as well. Regardless of which mode this creature travelled, it was a fast mover.

Dyes continued tracking when he came across dead sheep, shredded into strips and by the presence of flies without maggots it must have been less than 6 hours since the event. Claws punctured through the lungs in a single clean strike yet not one piece was taken for food.

On the trailHe didn't like what he was seeing. This was no Shoshone trick for sure. This was a real life beastie that wasn't native to these parts. He had seen drawings of something called a Kangaroo from such a place as Queensland, or New South Whales, or some such, but he didn't know if anybody had brought any of the things to this land. He also didn't know what their feet looked like really, or if they had claws.
Though it probably wasn't a Kangaroo - a thought he'd keep to himself lest he be laughed out of ever having a job again - it could be something else moved in. If he had a medicine man along, they'd probably regale him with tales of spirit beasts and some such, but he didn't go in for all that. Men were men, and spirits were spirits. And nether the twain shall meet.
He

looks around again to see if he's on Crow land for sure now. If he is... he'll have to stop tracking for now and go warn them.

Dyes was near the border of the Crow reservation, he heard shots fired to the south of his position shortly after a white woman rushing north along the border carrying a spear. Running southwest he noticed a strange creature with a long snout, thick hide and lots of hair (lizard head, yak hair) running swiftly on its hind legs.

Taking a shotWhere in the Devil's playground did you come from?", he said softly as he put a foot in the stirrup of his horse with practiced ease, never taking his eyes off the critter.
In the same move he pulled out his winchester and chambered a round. He wanted the higher vantage point to not only take a shot at whatever this beast was, but to keep an eye on the odd white woman with a spear as well. Given that shots had already been fired, giving away his postion would just add to the chaos of whoever was trying to get a bead on things.

Still, he was going to put this thing down and let the Crow sort out what it was by looking at its carcass.
He squeezed a knee into the side of his saddle, while he aimed down the barrel of the rifle. He exhaled and held his breath for but a moment as he gently squeezed the trigger.

The shot felt good as it left the barrel, and he kept an eye down the barrel. He had led the critter and accounted for the wind. He knew it was going to hit the beast, but not where and how good his placement would be.

A loud bang from from the hillside the creature was heading to, another explosion of blood flung from the body as it dropped at the edge of the borderlands. A few moments of peaceful land overshadows gave The threat taken down and with the sun in it's face. (OOC; Pain meds kicking in)
