The Thunder of the Soul Forge

REPLACEMENT PLAYERS NEEDED
Basic info: The Dwarfiest Dwarf campaign I've ever run.

Game NameThe Thunder of the Soul Forge
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeDwarves fulfilling a forgotten Prophecy, some horror with a death cult (or three!), occasionally very dark themes in very dark places, but light and fun in others.
FlavourEmphasis on Roleplay, combat level is 'Smash and Grab' Some mystery and problem-solving. Bearded Twins and their shenanigans, world exploration and travel to many areas in Faerun.
Plot Summary
Plot Summary:There is something old and forgotten that will become known to all of the Realms soon, unless a hardy band of bearded warriors, whose souls were specifically forged by Moradin himself to stop, keep this from happening. Failure means an end to the Heart of Stone, and the earth shall crumble into nothing.

The characters are 2 sets of twin Mountain DwarvesShield Dwarves, born in the Great Rift. They all have a recurring dream, a vestige of the memory their soul has from its time in the Soul Forge, when it was being remade and then split in two (Thunder Blessing). See the Application section for more information.

Background
left-aligned image
Location: Forgotten Realms
Timeline: 1360 DR (A Few Years after the Time of Troubles)
The characters were all born in 1306-1307 DR, Twins of the Thunder Blessing. As such, they will be mystically tied to each other. They will receive an ability similar to the Thunder Twin regional feat from 3.5e, where they will be able to determine the direction of their twin by using a Bonus Action, usable three times before requiring a short rest. When they are together, they can add their proficiency bonus to any Persuasion checks against NPC Dwarves, if they are already proficient, then they double their proficiency on those checks.

This campaign is about a prophecy forgotten to all but Moradin and Berronar, and they are creating you for the purpose of the fulfilling it. This doesn't mean that you will be guaranteed survival, however. Should you happen to get killed by bandits, orcs, bandit-orcs, or a ham sandwich, then that simply means that the world will end. No pressure!

I will be looking for 4 players who really love to play Dwarves and are interested in securing the future of all Dwarf-kind as well as being a bonded pair of twins! Identical or Fraternal, either is fine. Hopefully the campaign will last for at least 2 years, maybe more. I'm not going anywhere, come and have a seat at my table, make yourself comfortable, and get ready for Dwarven shenanigans!

Baruk Khazad!

The Dream:
right-aligned image
*Clang* *Clang* *Clang*

The ringing of the hammer never ceases as the Greatfather toils in his forge. You are there, you can see only a little, but you can see. To your right, a bar of glowing orange steel with a halo of pure energy surrounding it. You know that bar, you've met before... They were always good to you, but you cannot remember their... why would you know a bar of steel?

To your left, another bar of steel, identical to the one on the right, but this bar, the halo is dark, with red electricity arcing through it's blue-grey aura, you... you know that one too. You never did like that one, no matter the form or gender it took, you've known it many times... bad steel that one, reckless, dangerous, honorless. You remember, you took it's beard once, at the councils order. Shorn and banished for... What are you talking about?!

You try to raise your hands, to look at your own arms and digits, but you cannot. Looking down, you see that you, too, are but a bar of steel, glowing with the incredible heat of the forge flames. You... remember now, how you died. Did it just happen? Was it long ago? You cannot remember exactly, but the moment of death is clear in your mind. As your core heats thoroughly, however, even that memory begins to shimmer and flex. It won't be long now, and that memory will be gone as well. Moradin Soulforger, the Greatfather, turns from his work, holding the glowing ingot that he was working on. He holds it before his eyes, his glowing, celestial eyes, and whispers to the ingot. He waits a moment, as if listening, then smiles, and returns the ingot to the forge... It is longer, thinner, but bent at strange angles. It is such an odd shape, not meant to be a blade, or a tool. Only the Greatfather knows what the final shape will take. He turns to the ingots heating in the forge, and reaches in with his tongs. He picks up your ingot, your unworked soul, and brings you to the anvil.

Inside of your soul, you can hear his voice, deep as the darkest cavern, and strong as the highest mountain.

Hello child, welcome back to the Soul Forge, It's time to make you anew, tell me before your memory fades, what was your greatest joy in your most recent life?

After listening to your answer, he smiles, and places you on the anvil and hefts his rune-covered blacksmiths hammer. From behind Moradin appears Berronar Truesilver, the Greatmother. She leans over the anvil, and then looks up at her husband and speaks aloud.

"This one, this one is ready for the Blessing."

Moradin nods, then picks up a chisel and places it down upon your center and gives a mighty swing, splitting you in half! Your consciousness remains in only one half, the other half of your soul laying on the anvil, glowing with a dying heat. Berronar leans over the other half of your soul, and blows across it. You can sense that it suddenly gasps with its first breath, it is looking around, confused. Moradin takes his tongs, picks up your other half, and places it lovingly back into the forge while Berronar looks at you.

She leans over the anvil, staring into your soul.

"You have a twin now, take care of each other. You both will... what's this? Moradin, come quickly. Look at this one."

There is a look of wonder and concern in her eyes as the Greatfather approaches and picks you up with his tongs to look more closely at you.

"Yes, my love, I see it... It has The Light, I will make this one special, this one will keep the memory. This one will be destined to great things."

He places you on the anvil again, but this time, he sprinkles some golden flax upon you before hefting his hammer again.

*CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!*

As he labors over your shape, Berronar begins to sing.

Replacement ApplicationThis will be done as an Audition to take over the role of Gromden from a player who has gone missing. Gromden is a hard-drinkin' hard-fightin' crazy arse Dorf of the Dorfiest kind. Battlerager Barbarian with amazingly high HP rolls and a brand-new suit of spiked armor that's begging to be tested on some Gobbers.

Gromden thinks everything is a Gobber, he's the best at he does, and what he does ain't academics. Unfortunately, Gromden's player has disappeared, which makes us all very sad, as he RP'd a psychotic battlerager beautifully.

What I'm looking for: Someone who can RP a psychotic dwarven battlerager beautifully.

I need someone to take the reigns on this character. The PC's are linked by blood, they are Thunder Twins, and the Thunder Twins will be receiving special treatments and considerations during the campaign. This, of course, presents me with the current conundrum, as we can't just have a character disappear and a new one appear We considered doing a crazy ret-con... but decided to rehome our feral Dorf instead.as if nothing happened.

Application: Please take a look at some of the RP samples as given by the previous player, here (his reaction to being hit with necrotic damage, described as puss-filled pustules and warts covering his body, good times), here, and here

Feel free to read through the story as written so far, even the prologues, the player RP has been quite good, but it needs another player or three (see below for 'or three') to join in the fun of A gnome might also be considered!Dwarven RP goodness.

Please respond in the most Gromdeny way you can to these three situations:
  1. Gromden was involved in a bar-room game called Bashit, where you put a mug of ale on top of your head and your opponent has to punch you in the face. If the mug falls, then you lose. If the mug stays, then you win. Gromden got to the final round, both of his eyes are nearly swollen shut and a couple of his teeth would feel loose if he wasn't so drunk. He's about to face his opponent to see who's the winner of the Bashit Tournament, winner gets about 25 gold. What does he say, how does he act, up until he throws that first punch?
  2. Gromden's beloved sister, Pendo, is being assaulted by three bugbears, and she won't be able to fight them off (in Gromden's eyes, Pendo is plenty tough in her own right), but Gromden can't reach her right away as he's busy tussling with a A human wizard who has proven quite resilient, darn mages!foe who will flee if he can, and that absolutely must not be allowed. What does Gromden do? RP the situation and his choice.
  3. Talk talk talk talk talk. The group hasn't done anything interesting in a long time, just all this chatter with people who Gromden may or may not want to just punch in the face (note, he wears battlerager armor). Gromden's bored, he knows there's action to be had, but all this chatter is wasting time while the gobbers are getting away/planning their next move/making more gobbers for Gromden to kill (okay, that might be okay with him).
Other spots to fill: There can be two more spots for anyone interested in playing a part in a campaign where there are four chosen souls, but doesn't want to be one of those chosen souls. The group is currently in a major Dwarven city, where there is also a small, but noticeable population of gnomes, and may be willing to let some extra muscle come along for fun and excitement. This means that these extras will not be in the spotlight at certain points in the game, and there may or may not be certain perks that the chosen get, but the other companions will not get. You can apply for a role like that if you wish, by following the standard protocol of: Name/appearance/class/race/RP sample. Starting level 3.

deadlineApplication period will end June 15th.

I'm definitely interested. I'll work on The Manditory Bonus Duty Determination Test 88-9bMoradin's questions in the morning. throughout the week. These were tougher questions than I expected. I always remembered Ultima questions being straight-forward and succinct. These are totally open ended.

How about the name Pendœ?
Previously 'secret' text for Karhald
1What was your greatest regret in all of your past lives?I had a dear friend who had gotten into a feud with a rival. It had been going on for decades with both of them causing trouble and harassing each other. I didn't take my friend seriously when the feud escalated and I said I was too busy to help build fortifications. My friend was killed while sleeping when a flaming manure barrel was flung through an unbarred window.
2You are to battle a duel with faulty weaponry. What do you do?One well-hidden horrible flaw could be an accident, two is a setup. I'd point out the haft and ask him to check over my own weapon for a flaw I might have missed. Then check over the rest of the weaponry for hidden faults while he looked for a replacement. If there are more hidden problems I suggest presuming the contest is rigged and offer to make the duel a fist fight in the interest of fairness.
3The constable and your old friend in the thieves guild are arguing.I'd ask my friend to seriously consider changing lines of work to something that doesn't cause harm. I'd try to help talk the belligerents into working out the problem peacefully.
4Your brother is a master blacksmith with a gambling problem and debt.I don't want my brother to come to harm, which he'll surely do if he can't pay his debt or if he goes adventuring for the money. On the other hand I don't want to support his gambling habit, he's just going to get into trouble again that way and drag me down with him. I tell my brother that I'll buy his debt, paying off his creditor and I'll expect him to pay me back. But I tell him I won't accept payment in gambling winnings, it has to be money earned through honest work. He's a skilled craftsman and I know he can pay me back eventually, if he doesn't take on more debt. I let him know I'll be holding his honor as collateral and try to convince him to budget his gambling and set limits for himself. If he can set aside enough to live on and support himself, and doesn't borrow money to gamble with, I don't object to his habit but if he can't manage some self-control it's as bad as drinking to excess. I'll try to convince him to take steps to curb his addiction, but I can't force my brother to improve himself. It's a matter of his own honor, but I'll do my best to help him without enabling him to continue down his self-destructive path.
5A foppish elf foretelling doom wants into the fabulous kingdom.I tell him that unless he can tell me what he needs to explain or can show me some convincing evidence of an eminent threat and give a good reason he can't explain it to me I can't let him through. But as long as I'm on duty the best I can offer is to let him to ask a local to take a message for him if anyone happens to come by. I'd like to help him, but I won't abandon my post and our kingdom didn't last this long by letting just anyone with fancy clothes and an urgent but unspecified mission through our gate. If he's willing to wait until I'm relieved I'll be willing to ask a superior officer if I could escort him to seek an audience with supervision.
6Unobtanium falls from the sky! What do?I'd craft it into a maul with a forked tail shape on the handle so it can be used as an axe, a hammer or a crowbar. Something that can be used as a tool in times of peace but also a weapon when required. I want it to be useful as often as possible instead of just for a specific purpose or to be horded or bargained over.
7What would it take to tempt you?Something I could convince myself was for the greater good. Like a way to know the truth of any situation.
8A deadbeat merchant isn't paying your friend what he owes him. What do you do with his dropped purse?I pick up the purse and wait until the merchant is in a public place and my friend is in earshot. I call loudly to him, and make sure people notice. I explain that I saw him drop this money a while ago and wanted to make sure he got it back since I knew how he had debts outstanding. Now that he's the center of attention he can still choose to blow my friend off, but he has to choose between his money and his credit.
9QuenchantA Spinning Coin
Nope, the profiler hates it. It's just Pendo then.

Answering these questions is a unique way to figure out class and alignment, and regardless if I get chosen or not, I'd still like to be able to take the challenge.

I'm currently working on these questions. It is a very fun and unique way to come up with a character concept. This sounds like a great campaign idea.

Application for Gromden, Male Dwarf"What was your greatest regret in all of your past lives?"

Gromden stood before Moradin the great soul forger and readied himself for judgement. "My greatest regret ye say? Hell of a way to open if ye ask me but Soulforger I be tellin' ye true. Me greatest regret is not tellin' me blade brothers what I truly thought of 'em. In all me forgings I've never been one to tell me feelin's well. I show them with me blade and I can only hope that those who fight beside me know how much I cherish their companionship."

"What do you do?"

Well I would walk right up to 'em and look 'im straight in the eye and say, "I won't be havein' ye make and excuses when I best ye. This fight will be fair as it can be as I already 'ave you at an advantage bein' a dwarf and we all know that puts you more than a step behind on the field of battle. Any one who knows the craft can see that axe will be shattering the firt swing ye take. Pick another so that there might still be honor left when I hand ye your arse on the field!"

"As the constable and his conversation get more and more heated, it seems that blood is about to be spilled, it is then that he recognizes you, and he falters. What do you do?"

"ACHOO!" Gromden sneezed. " Powerful stuff ye got there, but I be expecting no less. What would I do? Well first I be tryin' to win over me friend to me cause, he most likely has a good soul if he be true. So I would try to call him to me side and save him from the life he had begot himself, of course there is always the chance that he is bewitched. If that be the case and he do not come peacefully I would wack him up the side of the 'ead and let him sleep while we took care of those who might 'ave meant him harm. When hw waked he be knowin' true who his friends are I imagine."

"You happen to have, in your possession, a magical amulet that was given to you by a champion from the temple, and it would command a high price, just enough to pay your brothers debt, but it is your most prized possession. What do you do?""

Gromden stopped and thought for a moment. If he had his great beard he would be stroking it for this was a hard sacrafice to make, but he knew the right cause of action. "It would be a sacrafice true but what is the amulet but a tricket in comparison to blood? If he truely be a master craftsman then he could work off his debt to me by keepin' to his craft and residing to never gamble again for I will have taking to ultimate wager on him. Yes, I'd be sellin the amulet to pay off his debt and in turn would be blessin' the world with his craft for years to come."

"You stand torn between your duty to the laws of your kingdom, and your duty to the people of your kingdom. What will you do?""

"An Elf!!" Gromden said spitting on the ground. "Why does it have to be an elf? Ye can never be trustin' an elf. Aye my first duty would be to my people and not to my kingdom for there is a natural law that supercedes that of any throne hoppin' king, but... I not be trustin' no elf unless he can give me proof! If he can prove to me he is true in his words then I'd let him through but I would not be trustin' the words of a pointy eared uppity elf just on principle!"

"What can you do with the ore? And more importantly, what do you DO with the ore?"

"Well this one be easy. I would use the ore to craft me the most beautiful and wonderful of axes... no the TWO most beautiful and most deiicately balanced Battleaxes that the world has ever seen so that I might cut down Giants and Dragons twice as fast! Yes I would use those weapons to create a world where crafters would fear not for their great works to be destroyed, studiers of the arcane could hide safely in their delicate towers while priests could see to their gods. All beacuse of the wonderful craftmanship hammered into my fine axes."

"What would it take to tempt you?"

"The price of my soul I believe its what you ask great Soulforger. I would like to say I am immune to such temptations but as you 'ave justly stated there is always somethin' ain't there? Well for me it would have to be a matyr's sacrafice that would somehow protect those care the most about, save the world or some other such nonsense. I would not be tempted by power or riches but by motivation of something much more powerful, the love of my fellow dwarves."

"Thou dost see the same merchant drop a purse of gold, but he does not notice his error. He is walking away from you, and the bag looks like it holds the amount that the merchant owes your friend.""

"The way I see it is that it wasn't his gold he dropped."

"Choose now, your quenchant. Ask no questions, choose while your souls inner fire burns at the right temperature. Choose, and be born again.""

"Well I always did fancy me a mug of ale and I know not of that other nonsense. Bless me in the waters of me people great Soulforger for I choose the cask of Ale!"

no worries. I made a mistake in my secret post telling you how to make secret posts, and got two private messages from people saying "Hey! your secret ain't secret! "

Takes time... I know I'll make many mistakes! I"m still kinda new myself, but having a grand ol' time!
