Merchants Rest

Merchants Rest

Crossing through the double gates of Boury, both on the bridge that connects the walled community to the other side of the warm water river part of the group had traveled upon from North, the land opens up once again. Wildflowers pop through wispy, tall blades of grass, the once dense tropical trees along the riverside now sparsely in view as the environment begins to subtly change from jungle to plains land.

Once upon the dirt road, an easy trek towards Merchant's Rest lays before you. A narrow, winding road that follows the lay of the open land, scattered with Savannah grasses and large deciduous trees with leaves of green and yellow. The path takes you a mile down the way, into the small, downtrodden village of Merchant's Rest. Houses and shops sit right against the road, poor quality wood and stone making up the entirety of the structures throughout the town. A wishing well sits in the center of the village, dual servicing the residents as both a source of drinking water and historical lore. From the well, the road forks Northwest and SouthEast. A small wooden sign that says "To Hence and To Leigh".

People of various races, ages and gender are bustling about, either in the process of household chores or performing work day routines. On each side of the road as you continue to make your way through the town, side carts and stands of a variety of produce and wares offer townsfolk and traveler alike an opportunity to purchase products that range from the native foods to exotic and foreign items that out of town caravans have brought in from other cities within the Empire and sometimes on the rare occasion, other States within Waevera.

A small group of City Watch can be seen patrolling in their shifts off and on during the day. Upon entering from the southern side of the village, their watch station had been the first structure you passed. The City Watch wear brown leather apparel, a small patch in the style of ScarlaNoa's gold and purple, double headed griffin crest, is sewn into the upper left chest of their uniform.

Townsfolk barely notice a new group entering their meager little town. It was a common and daily occurrence for new merchants to pass through, seeking audience with the rich, private estates of Boury residents and granting permission to sell their wares in the open markets of the bigger, state-run cities. Hustling about, half-Orcs, Minotaurs, Wood Elves and Halfings made up the majority of the residents while merchants that bore the markings of other States seemed to situate themselves behind their market stalls.

As you pass the wishing well, to the right a longer rectangular building with open doors that lead straight to the road, gains your attention, seemingly the largest of the structures in the city. A swinging wooden sign above the door reads "Hair of the Bear" tavern and inn. Inside, you imagine that it must be quite dead, as there are no normal tavern sounds that you are use to hearing coming from the open windows and door. Instead, however, you hear in a very primitive mechanical voice ... "Mister Alex Culpepper , Do, Mister Alex Culpepper, DO!"

Travel Time w/ Gajine and Vesper
Gajine couldn’t help but give a light-hearted chuckle at the word vomit that was beginning to become familiar. He wasn’t able to capture all of the first volley, something about imposters, Chronos, and then a question on where Gordon was. Before he could answer she passed him unleashing another volley, this time he was as ready as he could be and tried taking in all the questions that he could so he could give honest answers. He turned and followed the warlock out pausing momentarily as the exited the residence looking at the guard. "Keep up ta good work, lad." he grinned eying the ham splattered across the helm and quickly moved along. After her shouting one last suggestion to the guard they were on the road towards Merchants Rest. This was as good as time as any to answer her questions, help pass the time.

"Bout what ye asked earlier." he said thinking for a moment "I planned ta make the leather as soon as we got ta town - ther’s a leatherworker I need ta meet. Kin probably make it there. Alsa, I kin start teachin ya the foundation o smithin ifn ya want. We have ta get ready ta head ta Kirdy so we kin break up tha lessons I spose." he scratched his beard trying to create a time table in his mind of all the stuff he had to do in what little time they had. A moment later he recalled one of the questions he missed with a "Oh, nd red is me favorite I guess..." he said as they moved along.

"Oh!" he exclaimed suddenly pulling out his journal from his holy pouch and thumbed through the pages as they walked along until he arrived at the page with the design Gond sent him "Vesper, do ya know anything bout gems r mana crystals? Can't really tell what this here thing is." he said holding out the journal to show her.

"Gond, me god, finally sent me something nd its this here ring." he said like an excited child " I need ta make it soon - I'll be makin yer leather first, gave ya me word, that I did. But I dun know ta first thing abou this ere gem or rock." giving a weak laugh and trying to keep a steady pace so they don't slow down but not too fast to make the image difficult to see.

Vesper Zuul
Female Yuan-Ti Pureblood Warlock: Pact of the Matrix

Travel Time w/ Gajine and VesperAs they made their way, walking side-by-side towards the small village, known to the locals as 'Merchant's Rest', Vesper soon began to notice just how much shorter that she was than the rest of her compatriots. This point became exaggerated as she hopped on one leg and began Stores them in her backpackremoving her tattered boots at the sight of the grass and flowers. She absolutely adored the feeling of the soft grass and earth beneath her feet. Something about being connected to the earth made her feel grounded.

She already knew that her newfound friends were tall, but walking next to Gajine, she realized that she was taking a step-and-a-half for every one of his. Of course, this meant nothing, but she definitely became aware of her stature in comparison to the larger Half-Orc man.

She also noticed that, the longer she spent with these people, the less judgements she placed upon them. Gajine, whom she previously feared because of his stature, began to look more like a large lovable oaf than a scary green man with tusks. His speech, though slower and less erratic than her own, was no longer odd or difficult to understand. She began to realize that she enjoyed his company and actually found herself missing him when he was gone.

The longer that she thought about it, the more that she realized that, in a very short period of time, she had become quite connected to all of these people. Kiirion, Lady Vilthal, Gordon, She hasn't officially made her exit yet so, until then, I'm treating her like she is still with us.Sparksy, and even Gajine were all so nice to her. They accepted her quirks and, so far, haven't tried to hurt her. Vesper couldn't help but feel a bit sad for the day that they would, inevitably, turn against her. Even Lady Vilaris was nice to her, for a time. But, if there was anything that she had learned throughout her life it was; 'Everyone will betray and hurt you, if given enough time.' It was and unfortunate fact of life...

"Vesper, do ya know anything bout gems r mana crystals? Can't really tell what this here thing is." His question interrupted her thoughts and she suddenly realized that he had been talking this whole time and she hadn't been listening. She studied the drawing and her head cocked to one side as she racked her brain to find any sort of reference from her past that may help him.

As she studied the picture, she held her hand out towards it. She wasn't exactly pointing at the picture, it more-or-less looked like she was waving at it. Her open palm swayed towards the image and then away from it. Vesper's eyes were no longer looking at the picture, but rather at the backside of her hand. She watched...
OOCWaiting on result of Roll to determine Vesper's answer to Gajine about the picture.

Also, Vesper is watching the brand on her hand to see if there is any change when she holds it up towards the picture that Gajine is showing her.

Well Wishes...The small town came into view as Vesper and Gajine continued to walk and talk. Vesper attempts to walk on the grass among the flowers as much as she can during their journey. She continues to mull over the image that Gajine showed her, every now and then giving a glance towards the back of one of her hands and a slight smirk as she saw the subtle glow from each pulse.

As they made their way through the town, her eyes darted from one thing to the next. She was amazed at how many different types of people there were and how incredibly different this place was compared to the walled confines of their recent accommodations. She smiled widely at the cart vendors as they passed and almost forgot that she wasn't in disguise until...

Her eyes locked onto a small contingent of City Watchmen as they went about their daily patrols. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid!' she mentally scolded herself as Cast: Mask of Many Facesshe began shaking her head. Her appearance changed to that of a small, female minotaur with tan skin/fur and dark blue hair. Satisfied with her disguise, she sees the Wishing Well in the center of the small town and starts walking towards it.

Vesper reaches into her pouch and retrieves Already marked them off of my Character Sheet.6 gold pieces. Closing her eyes, she stands there for a moment, clutching the gold pieces in the palm of her hand before tossing them into the well. She looks over at Gajine and smiles, before taking off in a childish run towards the nearby bar, 'Hair of the Bear'.

Well Wishes...
Trudging down the path to Merchants Rest the half-orc looked up at the overcast sky starting to get dark. His nostrils flared as he took in a deep breath. Dirt, flowers, and soft earth. He figured rain was likely on its way in or it was starting to get dark. Or both. Depending how long they spent in town it might've been a decent idea to just crash there for the night - especially if they got carried away with drinks. Lightly stretching his shoulders as they walked he looked over to his companion playing in the field of grass and flowers.

He gave a light chuckle to her child-like attitude but was slightly envious as well. He hadn't done something like that since he was a young child. Once his adoptive fatherBolrid's teachings began every day was rigorous training to become a blacksmith worthy of the Flintshard name. A childhood lost but a lifelong profession gained. He glanced up at the overcast once more. Its been one hell of day.

After a short time they finally arrived and entered the town passing various stands and guards. Gajine was taken aback for a moment, the amount of half-orcs here astounded him! Was his biological parents from here? He had no clue. He looked at the Minotaurs walking about in shock as well. He heard of them before, but never seen one with his eyes. There were apparently only two in Red Chester, or so he's heard, and never had seen either. After a moment or two of looking around he looked back over to Vesper about to suggest they hit the tavern and in her place saw a short female Minotaur. A shocked look was sprawled across his face as he quickly looked about to see if he could spot the Vesper he was more familiar with but saw nothing before he remember she could disguise herself and calmed down.

She appeared smaller than the others, by more than a good foot. She was a miniature Minotaur...a Minimino! He gave a slight chuckle at the thought as she approached the well giving a wish before tossing what looked to be a decent sum of coin into the well before looking back at him with a smile and rushing off towards what appeared to be a tavern.

Eyeing the well his mouth twitched as he gave into silly superstition. Pulling out a bolt from one of his pouches he calmly

tossed it into the well from where he stood before muttering some words under his breath before lightly shaking his head embarrassed that he did that. "Wait fer me lass! Ya cant buy me drink ifn I ain't there!" he shouted following after the Minimino.

Hair of the Bear Tavern and Inn

left-aligned image
As Gajine and Vesper enter the tavern, the crisp and salty aroma of bacon is the first to hit you. A crackling fireplace lights the left side of the room, many tables and chairs, mostly uninhabited during this time of day,and open shuttered windows that let the day's light filter through give the building a hazy yet cozy feel as you continue inward.

Behind the bar, a burly brown Minotaur is engaged in conversation and Dragonchess with a large mechanical being across the counter. He is wiping his hands on a dirty dish towel then makes a move on the chess board. "Me horse ta yur queen is check! Watcha say now Mr. M.A.C ? Hmn?" You see a funny lopsided grin spread under his wide snout brim before he looks up to the door you have come from ..."Ah! Welcome ta the Hair of the Bear! Look Olivia we got newcomers!"

From the right side of the bar, a young woman sits alone, watching the chess game and simply enjoying her brief stint of downtime. From beneath a worn and supple brown cap, short brown hair naturally springs to life as her attention turns to Andwair, the Minotaur, catching his announcement of the new arrivals. Looking towards the entry, appears a well-built half-Orc and....oddly enough, a very small female Minotaur. MAC, the mechanical creature at the far end of the counter, slowly stands and walks eagerly toward Olivia, he stands in her way like a giant boulder, obstructing her vision of the guests coming in.

Here kitty, kitty...

Olivia watched as the two across the bar clumsily moved the pieces on a board of Dragon Chess. She'd tried to teach them long ago, but only so much of it had been actually absorbed - mainly that there was a board, that you moved pieces, and (in Andwair's case) a few of the words. 'Check' was one of his favorites, which he often announced regardless of the state of the game. She'd long since given up teaching them which, surprisingly, led to exceptionally entertaining games. This one took an unexpected twist, much to Olivia's delight, as Andwair had just put his own king in check after moving M.A.C.'s queen, forgetting which pieces he was supposed to move. She giggled before the two newcomers captured her attention.

She'd gotten barely a look at the two of them before M.A.C. barred her view. Knowing it was useless to try to move him out of the way or scoot around him, she resorted to climbing up and kneeling on her bar stool. She leaned against M.A.C., one elbow rested firmly atop the robot's shoulder, her chin rested atop the fingers of her curled hand, while the other arm draped over the other shoulder lazily. She smiled at the half-orc and minotaur, looking them up and down.

M.A.C. spoke first. "Cat," he announced.

Olivia laughed, "No, M.A.C. not a cat, a minotaur... a tiny one at that." One of her eyebrows raised when mentioning how small the creature was but a smile quickly broke onto her face. "I'm sorry, he's still... learning. This is M.A.C. and I'm Olivia. The grand Chess Master over there is Andwair. It's been a while since there's been anyone but the three of us in here. Almost makes me wonder what you did to deserve walking through that door," She said, glancing at Andwair, giving him an apologetic look, making sure he knew she was simply joking.

The smell of bacon was so intoxicating that Vesper could barely focus on anything else. Her mouth was watering and she began an excited fidgeting with each passing moment. She realized that she hadn't eaten since this morning and was eager to get some meat in her belly.

"Wait fer me lass! Ya cant buy me drink ifn I ain't there!" Gajine's voice yelled after her as she burst into the tavern.

The sight inside the bar area was inconsequential to Vesper as she was completely intoxicated by the allure of bacon. She noticed the bartender was a massive Minotaur who appeared to be playing a robotic construct in a game of chess. She'd read about chess before, but never actually seen anyone play it.

"Me horse ta yur queen is check!" The bartender smirked proudly as he moved his piece on the board.

As the current denizens of the bar noticed their arrival, the robot moved towards the woman sitting at the end of the bar.

"Cat" the robot announced.

"No, M.A.C. not a cat, a minotaur... a tiny one at that." The woman laughed as she climbed on top of a stool and peered over the robot at them. "I'm sorry, he's still... learning. This is M.A.C. and I'm Olivia. The grand Chess Master over there is Andwair. It's been a while since there's been anyone but the three of us in here. Almost makes me wonder what you did to deserve walking through that door."

With a clearer view of the chess board, Vesper became slightly confused about Andwair's claim that he had the robot in 'Check'. Perhaps her understanding of the rules was not as proficient as she originally thought. Nevertheless, Vesper would not be distracted or denied.

"Hello Olivia, M.A.C., and Andwair. This is Gajine and I'm Minerva Minimino." Vesper lied. "We are here for drinks and bacon... not necessarily in that order. Do you have any whiskey? Or bourbon? Or ale?"

Vesper approaches the bar and begins to

survey the game of chess. Pulling Marked off of my Character Sheet7 Gold Pieces from her pouch, she slides them across the bar to Andwair. "2 whiskeys, and all the bacon you have... Oh, and," Turning to Olivia, Vesper yells to her from the other end of the bar; "What'll you be having, Ms. Olivia? First Round's on me!" Turning her attention back to Andwair, Vesper gives him a wink and says, "Keep the change, big boy!"

Gajine Flintshard
Male Half-Orc Cleric of the Forge

Watching the minimino burst into the bar without him caused him to put a bit of hustle in his step to catch up. As he reached the door and entered a sweet and delicious smell hit him.

Bacon!

There was bacon here!!

Yummy bacon!!!!

The smell had him in a near trance causing him to be

oblivious to the environment around him. The voices from the other occupants broke him from his bacon-induced trance as he heard the mechanical voice calling out "Cat." His eyes quickly honed on the mechanical man and then dilated taking in the metal marvel. What in all of Gond's creations was this thing!?! It's amazing! Aside from simple golems he never knew there could be metal men that could talk!!

Then he saw the young lady appear over the top of the metal man "IT HAS STORAGE FOR PEOPLE?!" his mind now cranking at a mile a second trying to process everything going on.
Then Vesper spoke adding further to his

confusion. She wasn't Vesper?! Who the heck was she?! She said his name but he didn't know any Minotaur! He stopped mid-track and held up his hands. This was too much. He needed to see where his friend was. "'Scuse me." he simply walked out and

searched for his companion but didn't see her no matter how hard he looked. They must've gotten separated somehow.

Grumbling he walked back in, hopefully she'd be along soon otherwise he'd have to go searching for her - she probably went to a shop without him. As soon as he entered again he saw the metal man and froze for a moment before approaching MAC. "'Scuse me, lass. Did ye make this here wonder from Gond 'imself?" pointing at MAC's torso and looking at Olivia. His mind was conflicted right now. He wanted bacon, but he also wanted to know about MAC. The battle of obsession versus obsession.

Olivia and M.A.C.
right-aligned image
Olivia noticed Minerva studying the chessboard and couldn't help but smile knowingly. It wouldn't be the first time that someone had doubted their own understanding of the rules after watching those two play. With the amount of unearned confidence they played the game with, she had found her self wondering if her own knowledge was flawed on at least occasion.

Minerva seemed friendly enough and definitely a colorful character, at least from first impressions, and Olivia couldn't help but laugh when Minerva called the average sized minotaur 'big boy.' She was about to ask where they were from when her attention was drawn back to the half-orc by the door who now has his hands up defensively. She barely had time to raise an eyebrow before he excused himself and quickly left threw the front door.

"Well, that was new," she said, a little shocked and quite confused as to what had just happened. "It's okay, they're friendly," Olivia said to M.A.C., gently patting him on the shoulder as she started to get down from the stool.

With almost no warning, the large robot went to the newcomer with a childlike curiosity. He took one finger and tried to gently lift a bit of her dark blue hair. He looked back to Olivia, "no cat?" he asked.

"No cat," she said firmly and watched him sit at his usual place by the chess board.

"Sorry about that," Olivia said, addressing Minerva, "he's always been a bit too curious for his own good." she paused for a minute, looking towards the door, "was the man who just left one of your companions? I hope that M.A.C. didn't scare him."

Gajine Gets Lost
left-aligned image

Gaine was lost. How he got lost, probably wasn't too hard to imagine. Running out in the dark, in an unknown shanty town with not even a dog barking or light flickering from within the homes and shops that lined the dusty dirt road. More then once, he passed that Wishing Well and more then once he found himself at the beginning or end of the one way road. Quite baffled, the half Orc began to sweat at not only the thought of misplacing Vesper, but misplacing himself as well. Finally the City Watch, who had been watching the frantic Orc for last twenty or so minutes, approached him and kindly gave him directions to where he was wanting to go. They chuckled a bit but had kindly obliged him without any banter or fuss.

As Gajine made his way in the right direction back to the Tavern, several shops with signs above their door were passed. He only made out bits and pieces of their names however as his gait had quickened in getting back to the tavern. He'd been gone quite a long time.

Back together again.

Before Gajine passed the Wishing Well a third time, Vilthal, Gordon and Kiirion (minus an infant) had made their way from Paris Stargazer's Boury estate and into Merchant's Rest. Eager to reunite and share their information with Gajine and Vesper, they find the only building open at the hour, The Hair of the Bear Tavern and Inn. As they come through the open doors, before them at the bar counter are two Minotaurs, a young woman and a large mechanical construct.

left-aligned image
There's an active chess game going on between the bar tender and the construct, while the female "mini" mino and the young woman seemed to be in hushed conversation. You see the bar tender stop and deliver an enormous platter of sizzling bacon between the two conversing, as well as sliding two bloody mary's to each of them. "Order Up!" he hollars in a deep drawl. At that moment, between the bacon and occupants, you realize that Vesper and Gajine don't seem to be around.

Kiirion finds himself looking between the sparsity of patrons, the outdated decor and even dilapidated furnishings. He didn't have to wonder why there were only four "people" in here. The place had a funky smell of fried pig, cheap cigars and rotten tomatoes. Not to forget to mention, it was falling apart.

The male, normal sized Mino, finally looks up to greet you. Equally surprised as you are that you were there. "Well... I'll be a dragon's egg..sunnyside up with a piece of toast! Welcome friends! Come in and be comfortable, I'm Andwair, what can I get you?" Of course, he failed to mention what was on the menu, but that could wait for now, there were customers to be served.

Soon after this, Gajine runs through the doors in a bit of a pant and panicked look on his face... Though perhaps it was soon relieved when he realizes the others were now right before him, not even had a chance to approach the counter.

M.A.C. disengages once again from the chess game and... as he had earlier, stands beside and afront of the young woman defensively. The visage of the woman is hidden by the large metal drone...his one good arm now held out straight, palm forward facing the newcomers. "No Cat"

Gajine Flintshard
Male Half-Orc Cleric of the Forge

Bursting in through the doors panting and trying to catch his breath he saw the rest of his companions that had departed for the Magus' place and gave a weak smile "Thank tha Wonderbringer yer here!" he said some orcish curses under his breath before trying to stand up straight again "I lost Vesper!" he said ignoring the minimino and young lady who were just finishing up their conversation it seemed. "I was comin ta town wit her n then - poof! Gone!" he looked at his companions with a glimmer of hope in his eye "Thought this ere minotaur lass was her but she done said she was someone else! Have any of ya seen the lass!?" the slight hints of panic from losing one of his first friends in a long time was clearly starting to show now.

He hadn't even the mind to pay attention to the metal wonder he saw in here before he left in search of her or the glorious smell of bacon that filled the air. This was serious to him!

Lady Vilthal

"-just worried you're jumpin' at ghosts is all Gordon." Vilthal stats as they enter the ramshackle pub that was the Hair of the Bear. "There's bein' careful but you're crossin' into paranoia." She looks around the place with a deep frown. "Good gods... Did we just miss a bar fight? Place could do with some touchin' up." She starts to rub her hands together, figuring the least she was going to do is make sure her table wasn't one of the damage or cracked ones that the few other occupants were taking up at that moment. Right up until Gajine bumped into them from behind, seemingly bursting into the tavern. "Gajine?! Th' hell were ya doin' out the- You lost Vesper?!" What in all that's decent an' not shite did you do that made ya lose Vesper?! Can't we leave ya alone fer a couple hours without ya losin' people we know?! I've got a good mind to-"

"No Cat"

She stops mid-rant. She turns towards the source of that strange voice. her eyes lock onto a tall construct standing before some woman playing chess. With the construct that had just stood up. She felt herself take a deep rbeath, hands clenched into giddy fists that came up to her chest.

But she caught herself.

Vesper was somewhere out in the city and it was getting late. Worse yet Gajine said she might be looking like someone other than her somewhat scaly self. She felt her heart tearing itself in half over seeing that gorgeous bronze and iron studmuffin barely able to grind out two words, but standing there fully functional and a sterling example of engineering and ingenuity... All of it thrown to the floor and shattered knowing Vesper was out there on her own.

She let out her exhale and lowered her hands, turning to face Gordon, Kiirion, and Gajine. "One of you is comin' with me. Someone should stay here in case Vesper makes her way back. We could find this place easily enough so could she. We're gonna make a quick circuit an' try to narrow down where she possibly could've gone." She reached into her many heavy pouches around her hips and fished out what Arcane Discovery class feature: Detect magic at-willlooked like a perfectly smooth disk littered with runes on the back side that she slid into the back of her glove. She removed a secured square of leather in her glove so she could look at it and keep her hands free. "Made this to work like th' spell Detect Magic but I can do it as many times as I like. Only got 30 ft. still but I won't get burnt out castin' it." She tapped the disc and showed them the metal glowing blue for a brief moment, then narrowing to have a cone directed towards the construct. "Good, still workin'. We're findin' her tonight. Th' faster we move, th' sooner we find her, th' sooner we can get back here."

Messin with Sasquatch"Thank tha' Wonderbringer yer here!" Gajine's voice, and the arrival of the other members of X-2, interrupted the conversation between Olivia and Vesper. He muttered some orcish curses under his breath before trying to stand up straight again; "I lost Vesper!" He said ignoring the minimino and young lady who were just finishing up their conversation it seemed.

It was at this very moment, that a Time to mess with Gajinedevilish smile flashed briefly across Vesper's face. Recasting Mask of Many Faces once moreShe shakes her head, ensuring that her disguise is thoroughly in place.

"I was comin' ta town wit' her n' then - poof! Gone!" he looked at his companions with a glimmer of hope in his eye "Thought this ere' minotaur lass was her but she done said she was someone else! Have any of ya seen the lass!?"

"Gajine?! Th' hell were ya doin' out the- YOU LOST VESPER?!" Lady Vilthal exclaimed. Vesper struggled to choke back a laugh, but managed to retain her composure. "What in all that's decent an' not shite did you do that made ya lose Vesper?! Can't we leave ya alone fer a couple hours without ya losin' people we know?! I've got a good mind to-"

Momentarily forgetting about her question about Lord Valaris, Vesper winks at Olivia and pops a piece of bacon in her mouth. She then takes a sip of the bloody mary and immediately spits it out exclaiming; "THIS ISN'T WHISKEY?!?!"
