quick question(s): Kezz seems pretty happy at his tavern, what would cause him to close it up, or install a general manager, so that he could come to an wilderness outpost? Just a general warning for game mechanic purposes you'll have to visit your tavern once a month to deal with any problems that might have come up (rules coming from the ultimate campaign rulebook if want to look em up)
I actually had the idea that the bar was more of a hobby at this point, with the apothecary being his primary occupation...but I suppose that the same situation still applies. I'll reword things to make it a bit clearer.

As for the question of why he'd leave things (whether bar or apothecary) behind: maybe I'm not quite clear on the premise. You mention the Town, the Abbey, and a murder mystery; I assumed the Abbey was located in the Town, and when a murder occurred that would provide the impetus to set off adventuring...but maybe I'm missing something? If so, I can tweak things to better fit the circumstances.

@Pumpkinhead11 - Sounds good to me. I can have something up tomorrow, or feel free to start things off before then...

@ suburbanplankton: Na bud, I think the problem is/was on my side ^^ Haeyong village and its background is from one of my short stories and I condensed it down for over here and whilst condensing I left out some stuff. As the village’s background reads now I can total see the mistake and I’ll have to go over and add some of the details back in.

The biggest thing is that Haeyong is still a fledgling village with a whole whooping nine buildings (besides houses) built by those who’ve come to make some monies after the initial farmer got it in his head to build an inn. The kingdom in which Haeyong was founded built the Abbey a little later, about five years ago and about five years after Haeyong’s founding. The Abbey was/is intended to serve as both a staging ground/forward operating base for the kingdom’s eventual expansion as well as establishing a recognized religious presence within the growing area.

Now the reason behind getting a known and aligned religion within the area falls squarely in the forest… I’ll not spoil that part here, but it is its own mystery, the cursed forest were no hunter dare enter…

Quote:
General idea to run with: you’re a fresh faced adventure that’s come to the Haeyong abbey, well more precisely its tavern, for whatever your reason is…
basically this was meant to say why would your character come to a wayward village with around 100 people if you include the surrounding farms.

Sooo… sorry for the confusion and I hope this helps out some… and I’ll get to rewriting the setting to hopefully capture this aspect

Character ApplicationName: Sylvia
Race: Nidalese Human
Gender: Female
Background: Street Urchin
Class: Rogue
Short description: Sylvia has long and dirty white hair, ashen skin covered in scars, and she is missing an eye. Her tattered armor is piecemeal, her weapons are all stolen, and she is missing an eye. You've seen her rummaging the dumpsters, you've seen her pickpocketing near the temple, and now you see her putting a dagger at your throat, asking for some coin for a poor little girl who is missing an eye.

Her earlier memories were on the streets. The biting cold, the uncaring eyes, and the pangs of hunger that never quite left. Stealing came as an easy answer to this harsh reality, and over time, Sylvia became good at it, quite good in fact. So good she felt pride and joy whenever putting her skills to the test. Day in and day out she'd sneak into the market and then return sprinting with her bounty back to her little hideout just outside of town. That had been where she'd first met the goblins. Finding them rummaging trough her secret stash had been shocking, but listening them utter broken common towards her rather than lunging for her throat had been ever more so. These goblins had a smart leader, and over time, a business relationship formed between them: Sylvia would go to the city and take from the humans, and then trade with the goblins for food. She didn't care exactly what she was eating or what the little green devils asked for, all that mattered was having meat on the menu for the first time in years.

So to an extent, the goblins became her friends, and all was well in her small and simple world, until one day she discovered how to access Mr. Paul the blacksmith's storage, and all changed as she came to the goblins with a haul of weapons: broken and discarded, but steel all the same. It didn't take long after that for them to start raiding the outer skirts of town, and before she realized it their clever leader had been slaughtered and replaced by a big, dumb brute who didn't care to keep trading with the girl. And one night, when she was once more rummaging trough the blacksmith's wares, a fire erupted in the temple, and the goblins all rushed trough the streets as their pillaged on their way back to the woods, until they found her.

By the time Mr. Paul came down to investigate the screams coming from his warehouse, all he found was the bloodied and desecrated body of a girl. Her face was twisted with pain and caked with blood, she had a twisted, broken dagger sticking from her stomach, and she was missing an eye. But she was still alive. The rough and callous old man took her into his workshop, placed her small and frail body over an anvil, and gave her a strong strap of leather to bite into. And then he proceeded to save her life by cauterising her wounds with the hot irons from his forge. Sylvia would wake up days later, not in her hideout nor in the workshop, but in a small infirmary within the temple, sitting on her bed and staring at the person resting in the one next to her: a small goblin, burned nearly to a crisp, but smiling.

I rewrote Kezz's backstory a bit, since it didn't seem to make sense for him to own the tavern in Haeyong; the rewrite also relieves him of the responsibility of having a business to take care of as the story begins...

At the Tavern
"Yes, I see what you mean...there's just a bit of astringency, there on the sides of the tongue. So this was grown down near the river? It gives very different flavor than the hillside grains, doesn't it?"

Kezz takes another swallow, then with a wide grin, sets his mug of beer on the bar. He is enjoying what has become a daily ritual, discussing brewing techniques and sharing recipes with the barkeep. Suddenly, there is a loud bang as the tavern door flies open, the gusting wind slamming into the wall. Kezz spins around on his stool, losing his balance and barely catching himself on the edge of the bar - perhaps he shouldn't have had that third pint before lunch - to see Oya nimbly sidestepping the door as it slams shut again.

"Oya, hullo! Come, you must taste this!" Kezz had first met Oya just a few days after he had arrived in Haeyong; he had been wandering the hills outside the town, searching for interesting herbs and berries, when he almost quite literally stumbled onto her. She had a very extensive knowledge of the local flora, which once her initial shock wore off, she seemed happy enough to share; Kezz was looking forward to the many new recipes he could create with her help.

"Barkeep, another round, and one for my friend Oya, if you please!"

@Jim - I like it! Any thoughts on why they would leave where they were at to come to this village? Could go with another dream from the Shiny Goddess(Iomedae) or a fresh start away from the goblin tribe thatís still nearby since the tribe wonít be happy to see either of them alive or something along those lines. Iím open to ideas.

Dramatic entrances
Grey clouds overcast the sky, spreading the suns brightness like a blanket across the landscape. The wind coming down to dance with all manner of people and animal alike. A welcomed greeting of the ever changing seasons; at times a bit smothering, but welcomed all the same. She barley touched the door before the gust came by. At times nature was subtle and beautiful, but sometimes it was smothering and demanded attention like a mother missing her children.

The room noticeably quieted down to see what the sound was for as Oya tried to act as if nothing had happened. Then the door slammed shut. She froze in front of an empty table while the dead silence slowly turned back into chatter and clanking. She could hear her name being called from across the room and saw a flash of shocking pink in the corner of her eye.

She made her way to the bar, grabbing an empty pint that was sitting on an empty table. She was only a few steps away when the bartender placed the drinks on the bar and the anticipation for the drink was easy to see from the Gnome before she gently placed a hand on his far shoulder. As he turned to look, she switched the full pint with the empty one she was carrying and placed the fresh drink on an empty barstool next to them. She placed herself between it and the Gnome and leaned onto the bar; cupping the pint with both hands before taking a large sip of the ale.

@Jaling I was thinking of either pursuing the goblin tribe ourselves, both to prevent them from raiding any more villages (possibly Haeyong), and to atone for previous sins; or the priests of Iomedae sending us on a mission, maybe scorting some orphan children that will be adopted by families there.

@Jim & gnollservitude - Works for me. Kill the goblins! ...err...except my goblin. He's cool >.>;

A Short EntranceThe door to the inn opens and, at first, it didn’t look like there was anyone there. At least not if you looked for someone of average height. Lowering one’s gaze one might be expecting a halfling, but the head was much bigger than a halfling’s. Bigger even than a gnome’s. Peeking out from under his helmet, the tiny goblin looked around and stepped in to let the door close behind him. He wasn’t raving like a goblin on a raid nor was he dressed in rags. Instead he was dressed in worn but fairly new traveler’s clothes with the sound of heavy armor beneath. The longsword and bossed shield on his back tailored for his size and not something stolen from an ambushed traveler. Under the bossed shield and over the sword strapped to the little goblin’s back was a traveler’s backpack and strapped over his shoulder was a satchel of tools meant to mend his own armor and weapons if needed.

Despite the encumbrance, the strong little goblin bore it with ease and made his way to a table. The weapon, shield and packs were unloaded at the foot of the chair as was his helmet; exposing his bald, burn-scarred head. Little beady red eyes looked around until he found a bartender or maid and energetically raise his hand and waved it to and fro to gain attention.

We can always integrate other players later, so we might as well go for it now
