Game Name Tides of Retribution: A Wildemount Adventure

Theme Tropical adventure with aquatic abominations, old grudges, and ancient magical items.

Flavour A mixture of swashbuckling combat, diplomacy, and problem solving.

Plot Summary Perched on the tip of a long peninsula on the Menagerie Coast, the village of Palma Flora is known for its vibrant green palm trees, pristine azure waters, and its annual shark hunting festival. Lurking in the nearby Sharkfeather Abyss, an ocean trench just west of the village, lives a clan of Sahuagin who have grown weary of the slaughter of sharks by the citizens of Palma Flora. Year after year, the Sahuagin have sought to spoil the festival though their smaller numbers have seen them consistency foiled by the town’s shark hunters and hired mercenaries. Recently however, things have changed. In search of: Ideally 4-5 level 1 players. The first arc will move players from levels 1 to 3, with the opportunity for subsequent advancement as the campaign continues. What to expect: Posting rate of 1-2 times per week. Applications should be formatted as follows: 1) Character Name 2) Short Physical Description: Picture optional but appreciated. 3) Character Pitch: This section should summarize your character concept while providing brief insight your character’s history. Shorter is better, if I like your character pitch we can always work out the details later. 4) Role Play: If your character is a native of Palma Flora use a short role play sample to give an window into their daily life in the town. If your character is a non-native use a short role play sample to describe an aspect of their journey to the town or their reason for being there. Other details: - Although the campaign setting of Wildemount was created for the actual play show Critical Role, the events from that story are in no way canonical to the story we will tell together. Knowledge of the events of the show (or of Wildemount in general) is in no way needed to participate in this game. Application - Wilcryn Daergel Art by Aleksandra Trezvina Name: Wilcryn Daergel Intended Class/Race: Rock Gnome Wizard (Graviturgy) Quick Description: Slightly on the stockier side from years of a comfortable life and lack of exercise as he progresses in age. Thick white hair that is often a tangled mess and give an appearance of being a bit loony. Always keeps his professional gear at his side just in case he finds something interesting. Pitch: A gnomish jeweler from Gwardan who uses his arcane prowess to chase after, often frivolous, rumors of rare gems/stones in hopes of making the most sought after jewelry this side of Exandria. Roleplay:   Darn rumors, darn gulible gnome! Art by Aleksandra Trezvina It was during one of his quarterly trips to Port Damali that the rumor tickled Wilcryn's ear. A silly thing that slipped off the intoxicated tongue of a bar patron, yet - what if it wasn't silly? A large lapis lazuli that shown more brilliant than the sea located somewhere off the coast of Palma Flora. Such a silly thing as there was very likely little limestone in that area. But what if there was? Unable to fight the thought the gnome used what gold he acquired from sales that trip to charter swift passage down to Palma Flora through the Vezdaweald, lest he become an old snack for one of the nocturnal beast that roam it. Now that he was here all inquiries seemed to come to a dead end. No one knew of such thing! NO! They know of it, surely - they just don't want Wilcryn to obtain it. "A guarded treasure of the community, eh? Surely there must be a way to obtain it - or something else to make this all worth while!!!"

Una is a boisterous, adventurous pirate who happens to be between jobs right now, as her previous captain and crew were scattered to the four winds due to certain legal entanglements around what she refers to as "Preemptive salvage," but which others refer to as "Egregious piracy." Having hopped aboard the first ship sailing from her previous port, she's worked her passage as a lookout and cook's assistant, and found herself in Palma Flora, which looks nice enough. While she's laying low and looking for a new crew, this shark hunting event seems like an exciting way to pass some time, make some new contacts, and possibly earn a few coins in the bargain.

Una Lojinx stood in the sails as the Wyvernwise rode the trailing wind towards the port at the base of the mountain range. The ship was carrying barrels of pitch, bolts of colorful cloth, and a hold full of deepwater bluefish, and with her captain already having buyers for the first two items, both she and the crew were happy to be pulling in.

With the crew assembled on topside, Eva Oddguard walked among them, coming eventually to the halfling.

"A fine job ye did, shortstack," she said good-naturedly. "'Tis nae often I take a Halfling aboard as crew, but your skill in the rigging and skill with a saucepan have made ye more than welcome, should ye decide to stay on once we're reprovisioned."

Una grinned. "My thanks, Captain, but I'll be taking my leave all the same. The life of a merchant ship sailor is an honest one."

Eva arched an eyebrow. "Ye say that like it's a swearword."

The halfling shrugged. "I'm not afraid of honest work, ma'am. I just have other plans."

"In a foreign port you've never visited before."

"That's where the best plans are formed," said Una with a smile, as the ship bumped into the dock.

Adventurer Aspirant Name: Regina Cynthille Race and Class: Human Fighter Quick Description: A young woman with a slight built, Regina has a fiery and spirited disposition, often showing her emotions and is quick to express her thoughts and opinions regarding everything around her. Takes herself way too seriously, but she is also very passionate in doing the right things. Dreams of becoming a legendary heroine one day. Pitch: A human fighter who wishes to rise above her station, wanting to become more than just ordinary person. She doesn't want to inherit the profession of any of her parents; a shark hunter and a barmaid, and wishes to become an adventurer instead. Even so, she had decided to join the militia since she had to start somewhere in her quest to become an adventurer. Roleplay:   Regina really hated it when tourists came to Palma Flora. Not that she hated people in general, it was just that whenever she encountered one of them, she had nothing much to say about Palma Flora except the fact that the people here were mostly shark hunters. And fishermen. She couldn't understand why many people liked visiting this place to begin with. She had lived there for her whole life, so everything in here felt ordinary to her. Many people she knew were shark hunters, fishermen, farmers and brewers, and many expected her to become just like them. She didn't want that, of course. She wanted to be something else, something that she would be proud to become. Sure, occasional attacks from sahuagin and pirates made things here in Palma Flora less dull, but she wanted something more. She wanted to be someone with noteworthy deeds, though she knew that she had to start somewhere. "So... you want to join the militia?" Her father's friend asked. The militia was mostly untrained, though they did their job well protecting the settlement from sahuagin and pirates, as well as shark hunting. "Well, you don't seem too delicate, though you sure you want to join us? You do know that we have to deal with pirates once in a while too, right?" "I've made up my mind," Regina responded resolutely. "I thought I could learn how to fight in the meantime." Her father's friend laughed. "Hah, aren't you a feisty one, kiddo? Well, we could use some extra hands. Shark hunting festival is just around the corner, so I guess we're pretty lucky to have you on board." Regina smiled. She knew that she had to start with shark hunting first. She would continue learning how to fight so that one day, she could forge a legend of her own.

Hilloc : TORTLE DRUID -- Circle of Spores Hilloc Driftwood, the laziest thing in Palma Flora. That's what his mother always said. And then she would tell him that he would never get a girl. That was unfair, I mean there weren't any tortle girls in this one beach town anyway, none younger than his mother anyway. He wasn't ugly. He was pretty big for a tortle, if not exactly chiseled. And no one but the barbarians wanted to spar with him in the militia. His spores made him pretty tough in a fight even if he ended up smelling like the beach at low tide. Besides, why did he need to work? He did his share as one of the village druids. And he knew more about fishing than anyone his age! If he was bringing in more food than he was eating, why should anyone care that he did it shelled up on the beach with a fishing line in front of him. Fishing was work after all, well, sort of. Hmmm, the fish would wake him up if they bit . . . zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Character Application "Together we can save the world!" "Don't be frightened. These are my friends!" Vesper Highwind Human Cleric Character Pitch: Every party needs a kind innocent healer that they can corrupt depend on. Vesper is a bright light that loves people and tries to bring out the best in everyone, but she is clearly a fish out of water in this tropical environment. She is a shy introvert in public, but among her friends she always has a warm word of encouragement and is always up for trying new things. And almost everything is new here on the coast, since she comes from norther snow country. I would see her as being the Pike or Caduceus of the group. RP Sample: Vesper was still having trouble getting used to the warm weather of Palma Flora. Her parents still had not really explained why they had needed to flee so far south, nor what they were really fleeing from. She trusted her family enough not to ask questions, but it troubled her that they would not share their reasons with her. While the rest of her family had spent the last day or so unpacking, she had spent the day fishing. There were no frigid forests for hunting or gathering, and fishing had seemed the easiest way to get food to feed everyone while the worked. And Vesper did like being helpful. As she paddled her little boat towards the dock, Vesper saw that her father was already there waiting for her. She smiled brightly as she made her way to him. "Welcome back, Vesper. Any luck today?" Vesper waited for her father to finish tying off her boat before she rose to step up onto the dock. "A few smaller fish. Enough for a couple of days." Her father reaches down to help her out of the boat. Vesper does not think she needs the help, but her father already feels bad that he cannot go out to fish with her. And it really doesn’t hurt to let him at least try. So she takes his arm with a smile and gets out of her little boat. "Maybe you’ll have more luck tomorrow," he offers with a smile as he bends down to pull up her string of catches. But Vesper shakes her head gently and stares off into the cloudless horizon. "Can’t go out tomorrow. Storm will be coming soon…"

Costas Macris 1) Costas Macris (Rogue, Smuggler background, Human variant) 2) Short Physical Description: 3) Character Pitch: Costas is a low down, dirty smuggler hiding out in Palma Flora after a deal gone wrong. He is grumpy and cynical, but a fun drunk and a skilled sailor. He's a hell of a salesman and prides himself on slipping under the eyes of authorities and pirates alike. He's no fool though - when it comes to a job, he prefers a solid crew, and right now he's the only person left from his last ship who isn't rotting in a dungeon or swinging from the gallows. 4) Role Play:   Why did it have to be chickens? Costas shoved his bandanna deeper into his nostrils, hoping the stench of sweat that soaked the rag would help drown out the infinitely more pungent odor of the foul fowl pecking at his legs and stepping all over his belly. He cursed himself for not being more discerning in selecting a merchant to bribe. "I should have waited for a linens trader..." he thought. After settling into the darkness and sticky humidity of the merchant cart - and adjusting to his clucking travel companions - Costas let his thoughts drift toward his crew. They were lost. Probably. Almost certainly. The small crew of The Rum Guppy were so certain they'd gave the privateers hired by the Dwendalian Empire the slip. They let their guards down. He frowned. We let our guards down. Truth be told, if it hadn't been for a mixture of cowardice, luck, and a strong wind fighting the privateer's sails, he'd have almost certainly been dangling from a rope or chummed up into shark bait himself. As his analysis slowly morphed into the beginning stages of survivor's guilt, Costas drifted off to sleep. ... A sharp pain radiated through his ribcage, and Costas - before his eyes were even open - had his dagger in hand and spun toward the source of his agony. "If I was pecked so help me..." Costas began, but stopped when he saw the half-elf merchant he'd hired to smuggle him along the coast prodding him with a stick. "Enough!" He yelped, batting the stick away with the blunt of his dagger. The sleepy-eyed half-elf, apparently unphased by strange cargo, withdrew his stick. "This's far south long the coast am I'm headed," the wrinkled merchant said. "Inland from 'ere. You seem the type'ta like the coast, figured'd I'd letcha out here." "And where is 'here'?" Costas said, tossing his water-logged leather satchel over his shoulder as he climbed out of the cart. "Palma Flora. Breezy little town. Not much trouble to be had," the half elf said, pausing and giving him a long, judgmental stare. "Cept, of course, if you plan on causin' some." It wasn't a question. "I'll be good," Costas said with a sardonic grin. "Much obliged, merchant. Safe travels on your way." As the smuggler walked away from the cart towards the edge of town, the half-elf let out a loud, very intentional throat clear. Costas stopped in his tracks, grimaced, and reached into his pocket for the few gold pieces he had left. He turned, forced a smile, and flipped the coins to the old cart driver. "Apologies. Chicken funk's got the brain all twisted." The half-elf raised a skeptical eyebrow, examined the gold for a moment, and returned to his cart. Once the merchant's back was turned, Costas's wildly fake smile disintegrated into a scowl, and he spun on his heels back toward the town. Now not only was he a wanted man, with no friends or prospects for work, he was also broke. Wonderful. "Palma Flora, don't you screw me..." he muttered, marching toward his uncertain next steps in the sleepy tropical town.

Class: Rogue (sailor background)
Short Physical Description: The young lady is 5'8 and slender and athletic at 130lbs. She has shoulder length blond hair which goes well with her dark green eyes and tanned skin. She weather leather for armor, a dagger sheathed at each thigh, a sword at her left side and bow at her back.

Character Pitch: A friendly lass that gets along with everyone as she had seen man people and races along her travels. Her parents now gone, she is at a crossroads, not quite sure what to do with herself. While she enjoys visiting ports and other cities, it’s only temporarily, for she’s happiest on the sea.

Role Play: Pirates had attacked her ship and held her prisoner. A dew days at sea, they were attacked by the Sahuagins and she went overboard. Luckily, before she lost consciousness, she thought she saw an elf swimming towards her. When she woke up, she found herself in a rowboat, then she sat up and there was a ship near her, a man yelled out to her.

"Ahoy there lass, are you alright?"

She recognized the ship as a merchant ship, like her father's. "Think so." Saved, they brought her aboard the ship. "Thank you so much!" She hugged the captain. "Pirates attacked my father's ship." She then went on to tell her story.

"Well lass, we're heading to the village of Palma Flora, happens to be the closet port."

She thought a moment, trying to remember. "Is that on the Menagerie Coast?"

"Aye lass, it is."

When they reach port, they gave her some money to get what she needed as she had nothing and bid her a better future. She thanked the captain and his crew and they went their separate ways. They had a schedule to keep and was heading farther away from her homeland. She will just have to fine another passage...

Maylis Voclain, Definitely a Real Name Name: Maylis Voclain Race and Class: Drow Wizard Description: Tall, lean, and regal to boot Maylis stands out in the crowds of charlatans, ruffians, and ne'er-do-wells she is so often seen around. Thick waves of long white hair frame a violet tinged pale face made up of soft features that give off an air of innocence and honesty, a fact the young lady makes sure to use to her advantage. The young lady's magenta eyes are likely what give away her true nature as they glint with curiosity and glee, particularly when buttering up a poor soul too dense to look past a pretty face. Her attire is often over the top and consists of darker colors such a blues, purples, and greys with hints of white or silver found throughout. Character Pitch: A runaway young noblewoman hailing from the Kryn Dynasty. The youngest of three children she was always viewed as 'the spare' and more of a political piece to marry off rather than a part of the family. At a young age she was dropped in the lap of a family friend skilling in the arcane arts in the hopes of her learning something and bumping up her value as a marriage piece. This didn't sit well with her and instead of succumbing to a fate she never would have picked herself she took things into her own things and ran, leaving behind her family, her name, her wealth, and the only home and people she'd ever known. Now with a newly acquired name Maylis seeks to prove she's more than just a name or token child to marry off when it's politically beneficial. RP Sample:   Sample Post The sound and smell of horses assaulted the drow's senses as she stared down at the stack of papers in her hands. Within those fifteen pieces of parchment was a completely new life, something the dull haired woman never thought she'd get a chance at. But here she was, moments away from leaving everything she knew behind her and a sense of melancholy settled on her shoulders. It was strange, she'd thought the only thing she would have felt was joy, but even with all the bad this place held there was still some good, and she was going to miss it. Well them, her friends, the ones who helped her get this far in the first place. A tear threatened to fall from her eye as she thought of staying, for them. But, she couldn't do that not after all they did to get her this far, and not after her last conversation with her father. The venom and bitterness in his voice still echoed in her ears. That caused the tear to drop and with a small sniff she brushed it away, almost jumping as a stranger's voice echoed around her. "Miz Voclain? It be time to go," Glancing up from her hands the newly named Maylis was greeted by an intimidating bugbear fellow. Taking a breath she flashed a bright smile. "Of course, of course. Thank you again for agreeing to take me on such short notice." The woman thanked the carriage driver as she moved to get into the cab. Before she could climb all the way in, the driver posed another question and who could really blame him? "I don' mean to be rude, but what drives a lady such as yourself down ta the Menagerie Coast? Ain't it a bit far...an bright?" The burly fellow pondered and Maylis couldn't help but laugh. "Honestly?" She started sending a glance towards the driver before letting a small smile settle onto her face. "That's exactly it, it's so different that it's bound to be fine place for a new start don't you think?" The driver paused actually seeming to ponder it before giving his head a shake. "Whatever you say Miz." The bugbear said before heading to the front of the cab as Maylis let out a laugh before pulling herself the rest of the way into the interior of the carriage. She sat her head leaning against the back wall and her gaze staring out the window as the only city she'd ever known passed by her. It was both terrifying and exhilarating and she couldn't wait to see what the future held.

Character Concept Character Name: Brennan Walsh Physical Description: Brennan is a tall, lean man of average height with thick black hair that is shoulder length. He is clean shaven and some would consider him unhandsome, with a thick brow, wide nose, and thin lips. He wears a tan set of leather armor over loose fitting dark blue clothing with a thick leather belt containing multiple pouches and a variety of different daggers and knives. Over his shoulders is a tan cloak and cowl, secured at the neck by a steel clasp with the symbol of a pair of hands holding a ball of light. Character Pitch: Born in Palma Flora to a single mother, Brennan was orphaned at birth when his mother passed away during childbirth. As fate would have it, the midwife took the young infant to a sect of natural healers known as the Bal-Galad (elven for "Divine Light"). The Bal-Galad is sect of human healers with no magical talent whose primary purpose is to travel and heal those in need without regard for class or coin. Its secondary purpose is training its healers to be masters of the knife so they can engage in secretly eliminating those who would bring the innocent harm. This secretive sect of men is led by an elven woman of advanced age known as Mother Geminara. Mother Geminara took in the young Brennan where he was raised in the sect and trained from an early age in the arts of the Bal-Galad. Having since finished his training, Brennan has roamed around the area with other members of the Bal-Galad and has helped stopped a group of bandits who were preying upon travelers to Palma Flora. Role Play: Even though he stands outside in the shadows, he can still smell the sweat and the lust from the brothel. It is always the first thing he notices when he enters it to treat the women inside. It was earlier today when he observed Scarlet and the marks on her that showed one of her customers was hurting her badly, but she refused to say who it was. Even the madame was tight lipped about who it was, but Brennan knew he couldn't let it slide. Obviously someone was terrorizing these poor women. But who? And that is why he waited in the shadows. Waiting for the man to finish up in Scarlet's room. He caught a glimpse of crimson on the man's shoulders before the window was closed. Even through the closed windows however, he can hear the sounds of slapping and Scarlet crying. Obviously this fellow got his pleasure in different ways. As much as he wished to be there to stop it right at the moment, Brennan knew subtlety was more important. The window opened, signaling the man was done and on his way out. When he steps out into the alleyway a few minutes later, Brennan knows why the women were so scared. The man wore the garb of a member of the Security Council, which would most certainly give the women a nightmare if they spoke out about their mistreatment. Sweat gleamed on his forehead from his exertions as he wiped his forehead off with a handkerchief before tucking it into his belt and setting off into the street, the dusk gleaming off of his jewelry as he gave a casual whistle. Brennan allowed him to get a few blocks away before he made contact. When his hand grabbed the man's mouth shut and the blade of his knife settled on the man's throat, he froze in fear. Brennan could feel the man's entire body begin to tremble at his touch. "Now you listen to me, and with your full attention. Do I have your attention?" Brennan asks in a low whisper. The man grunts and shakes his head slightly in the affirmative. "You're going to stop beating those women. You're going to never come back to that place again. If you don't, the next time I catch you in the dark you won't feel the blade before it's inside your body. If you have ideas of shaking them down to find out who I am, you won't, because they have no idea I'm doing this. And if you do try, you might as well sign your own death sentence. Do you understand?" The man grunts and nods again, and Brennan can feel the hand covering his mouth get wet. The man was crying. Sheathing his knife, Brennan whispers "Good." Then, with a well placed punch to the man's liver, the man cries out in pain and drops to the ground, wheezing and clutching his side. By the time he is able to look up and search for his attacker, Brennan has vanished into the darkness. Hopefully he takes the warning, Brennan thinks to himself as he watches the man struggle to his feet from a safe distance. I don't relish the thought of killing a member of the Security Council, but if he tries anything... Brennan leaves the statement open ended in his mind, as he knows full well what will happen. Pulling his cowl up tighter around his head, he slinks off into the darkness.
