Card Games

Game NameCard Games
Game SystemOther Roleplaying Games
ThemeA deck of 52 playing cards
FlavourSuits include: Hearts, Clubs, Spades, and Diamonds
Plot SummaryI am hosting card games. Some of the card games I will be hosting will include:
4 Card Drop 'Em (a card game I have created)
Cribbage
Gin
Poker
Blackjack
Crazy eights
Hearts
Spades
Go Fish

As I learn new card games (which you are by all means free to share with me) I will add them to the list. Don't know how to play the card games above? Its okay rules for each of these will be posted inside the game folder and even inside each individual card game's game thread.

My process to host card games does require an extra person or take the position of the dealer as long as the dealer doesn't have free choice over the game.
I will shuffle a deck in real life and post the deck order in a secret text to myself. Then I will be responsible for dealing out cards to all players (of course in secret text if players hand is secret) then I will be responsible for dealing out cards to each player anytime they would draw a card.

If you are a DM and you would like me to host a card game for your players just give me a shout. I would love to see some role play interactions over a card game.

Here is the game thread for anyone wanting to play some card games. I am slowly working up the rules for each card game.

I’m so confused. Surely there are more efficient ways of doing card games?

I'm open to ideas. Though so far its not that inconvenient for me to shuffle a real life deck and play middle man.

Many ideas I can think of regarding shuffling and dealing cards to get rid of the middle man and allow the players to draw their own cards could allow players to find out what is in other player's hands. Which can then have players accusing other players of cheating. (Which as a veteran ToW player I want to avoid any possibilities to allow anyone to accuse anyone else of cheating because those rarely end in happy endings )

But like, if you want to play bridge, there’s a site for that. Ditto for almost every other site available. Robots make pretty good middle men when it comes to dealing. Or heck, even playing if you’re shy on partners.

Ah, but I have created my own card games. Is there a site to play custom card gamed off of?

I've implemented a hanafuda deck on Roll20, but never considered trying to play it via PbP. One round is usually short in the hanafuda games I know, but a full game is 12 rounds.

I think this is a great idea G.R.! Unfortunately what's happening here is the dice roller functionality is failing you. I passed my finite math class with a "D" in college and dropped out of my Visual Basic programming course, so I think that makes me a great qualified expert to talk about the subject!

We can easily use the dice roller to simulate the first card drawn in a card game. With a deck of 52 cards, a simple (DICE)d52(/DICE) would select one for you, assuming all players agreed on which card was which number ahead of time. After that first draw though, the dice roller falls apart. If you draw card 7, the system should understand that card 7 can't be drawn again, thus leaving only 51 options. If a clever person can figure out a way to make our current system do that, we'll be open to players of all kinds of card games. (Magic and Munchkin leap to mind...)

Side note: I don't know if the Apprentice program is exactly what you were looking for, but it may allow you to play your custom card game. Just like a real deck of cards, Apprentice has no built-in rules really. You can shuffle the deck as many times as you want, draw as many times, create copies of cards etc., but your opponent can see everything you're doing, so no cheating! Also, I think the o.g. version of it is now freeware, based on a quick Google search.

The web page for the 2nd version of Apprentice claims you can "Play any card game ever created" in the banner. So they're confident, at least.

Rather than contemporary card games, it might be a cool resource to research and create some of the games that were played in the middle ages . . . cards, dice, etc. The first versions I know of for modern cards came from Musketeer era French courts. Japan had some kind of flower cards. Tarot games were probably a thing. Then there are games like fox and hounds (heard of it, know nothing about it), knucklebones (same), Egyptian games that could be found in the tombs of pharoahs, etc.

Well I kind of dropped this project when the few players I had stopped responding. I'll pick it up if you 2 are interested in playing some card games. I don't mind shuffling a deck in real life and I'll keep doing that if need be while I look for a better way. Let me check out this Apprentice program.

In some fantasy novel I was reading years ago, they were playing a game called "Tarok". I looked it up later and found out that it was a real thing, the game used tarot cards to play.

What kinds of non-standard decks do you have, G.R.? I'd play some UNO or Rook, if anyone wants to.

We can do Uno with a deck of 52 cards same suit on same suit same number on same number. Jack, Queen, & King can be skip, reverse, draw 2. We can make it a deck of 54 throw in a couple of jokers to stand in as wilds. How does that sound?

Also I don't know Rook.
