Rise of the Runelords - Anniversary Edition

Game Name
Little Blue Presents: Rise of the Runelords - Anniversary Edition

Game System: Pathfinder
Theme: A classic adventure against a rising evil.
Flavour: Standard fantasy, dark and gritty, but hopefully some light-heartedness from characters.

Plot Summary
right-aligned image
From the idyllically peaceful coastal town of Sandpoint to an ancient lost city at the top of the world, Rise of the Runelords takes a party of adventurers from 1st to over 18th level and delves into the mysteries of Varisia's ancient past. Millennia ago, the powerful empire of Thassilon ruled the land, dominated by despotic runelords who maintained their power through harnessing the power of rune magic. Thought gone forever, the workings of Thassilon are not so far beneath the surface and one of the runelords plans a return to power. Only the brave adventurers stand in his way.

Character Creation
Classes: Any Paizo. Path of War or Psionics on approval, give me a rundown on what you want.
Races: Core. Any other on approval.
Templates: On approval
Alignment: Any, but you're going to have to convince me if you want to play evil.
Starting Level: 1st.
Ability Scores: 25 point buy.
Traits: 3 traits, 1 drawback. One trait must be a campaign trait from the Player's Guide.
Starting Gold: Max for your class, plus a free potion of CLW.
Hit Points: Full every level.
Feats: I'm using the Feat Tax Fix. It's cool, look at it.
More Feats: Everybody gets toughness for free. I don't like for level 1 characters to die just because a goblin rolled a critical hit.
Skills: We're using the Background Skills alternative rules. Basically you get 2 extra skill points per level.

ApplicationName:
Race:
Class:
Party Role(s): Party face, skill monkey, ranged, melee, tank, magic(utility, blasting, battlefield control, other), etc
Alignment:
Picture: A picture will be put in every post and in battle maps. If you need help finding one you like I'd be glad to assist.
Physical Description: Try to paint a picture of your character as seen from a stranger's perspective.
Personality: I have found Ash's Guide to be extremely helpful in fleshing out a character concept.
Background: Where is your character from? What are some of the major events in their lives?
Role-play Example: Act out a scene two days before the Swallowtail festival. Where is your character, what are they doing, what are they thinking?
Character Sheets: Not required before selection.
Traits/Drawback:

ExpectationsPosting Rate: At a minimum, I will put up 1 post every Sunday driving the main storyline/combat. In conversation with NPCs, I will often reply very quickly. During combat, I'd like to keep things moving more quickly and will post whenever every player has acted, but if a player hasn't acted by the end of the week, I will NPC them. If you don't have time for a post, letting me know your actions is appreciated.
Focus on Character Development: I'm hoping for something along the lines of 70% role/30% roll. From my last time running this, the roleplaying during the festival was the most fun I've ever had playing a TTRPG.
Character Selection: I'm more interested in compelling characters than party balance, but I'm not going to pick a party I think is destined to fail either.
Player's Guide: Please download the free Player's Guide to familiarize yourself with the campaign and area.
Party Size: I'll probably be looking for 6 or 7, with the expectation that a couple will likely drop off.
Micromanagement: I don't expect you to micro-manage every little detail about rations, ammo, payment for every little meal, or even encumbrance. (Just don't abuse those mechanics) If you enjoy that kind of thing, then have at it.
Musings: I like flavor. I like re-flavoring. If there's something you don't quite like about a race/class/archetype/spell/whatever, talk to me about it.
A Few More Musings: I don't mind optimization, but I don't like mega-cheese. Try to keep some sense of parity with the other characters. I don't necessarily mind the chained summoner, but if your eidolon can out-damage a level 5 fighter, we have a problem. When in doubt, talk to me.
Deadline: I dunno. Call it November 30th for now. If I move it up I'll give notice.

Name: Gunn Karaway
Race: Human
Class: Prodigy (Champion class, Lancer, Shield, Guardian, Protection)
Party Role(s): Tank and crowd control, ally protection
Alignment: Lawful Good (not lawful stupid)
Picture:
Physical Description: Gunn stands tall and stances wide, a determined grin plastered on his face that says come at me.
Personality: Stubborn and inviting, boastful and aware of himself and others.
Background: Gunn was born into a long running cadet branch of an even longer running merchant family. The Karaway line and the elder Anaway line were tightly interwoven over the generations through trade and travel through the lands of Varisia and Cheliax. As a Karaway, Gunn was always on the road traveling with a caravan of trade goods from the southern empire to be sold in Varisia for nominal profit. His home was on his feet, guarding his family and their employees from the dangers and pitfalls of the wilderness. Gunn's own squadroon was an esteemed one, holding some clout as being a tightly knit team of hagglers and fighters.

In his fifteenth year Gunn was given to his uncle to train in martial ways, having learned the ways of coin and education prior. Marley Karaway was a stern man that whipped Gunn into shape and grouped with three others of similar age so that one day they may start running a caravan themselves. The two cousins of his were Dyna and David Karaway, lovely Dyna being his elder by two years and lean David being born the month after Gunn. Maybel Anaway was half a year older than Gunn, the prospective leader of their mercantile affairs.

Role-play Example: Act out a scene two days before the Swallowtail festival. Where is your character, what are they doing, what are they thinking?
Character Sheets: Not required before selection.
Traits/Drawback: Merchant Family, Helpful, Contagious Mettle, Family Ties

Hey LittleBlue. Glad to see your trying your hand at this game again. Would you be happy for me to apply with the same character as last time or would you like a fresh character concept?

Hello there AP that I have been snubbed from almost as much as Way of the Wicked. Posting with interest.

P.S. Only asking because another thread convinced me to try reading up on other third party material, any allowances for Spheres of Power/Might classes?

I'll accept someone who has played the whole AP, but metagaming invites falling rocks

Hey Alatere! Yeah, I loved Percival, although you're certainly free to change him or come up with a new concept. Take note of the end of this post.

Oh, I know the Way of the Wicked woes

Regarding third-party material, and this is for everybody: While I'm not incredibly concerned with "party balance", I am concerned with character balance. I know the frustration of playing a Paizo martial alongside a third-party martial and feeling outclassed. I also know the frustration of playing low-level casters where you cast a couple of spells and then you're stuck with a light crossbow for the rest of the day.

I'll allow just about anything(maybe with some tweaks) for an application, but the more exotic your character is thematically and mechanical, compared to the general pool of applicants, the less likely they will be accepted. My suggestion is to come up with a character, and then consider different mechanical approaches they might take, so I can ultimately make them fit. For example, Alatere, a fighter from my last time running this AP, might want to also take a look at Path of War and/or Spheres of Might for his mechanical options.

If you have an exotic concept, you can also submit a second, more traditional character as well.

Name: Percival Deverin
Race: Human
Class: Swashbuckler
Party Role(s): Melee, Face
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Traits/Drawback: Merchant family (campaign trait), Trustworthy (social trait), Family resemblance (family trait), Family ties (drawback)

Physical Description: At a height of six foot and three inches tall Percival is fairly tall for the average human however his slim wiry build makes him appear even taller. A common nickname being 'bean pole'. Percival is blessed or cursed with a metabolism that never seems to let him put any weight on and ends up constantly looking on the skinny side. His build gives him a rather frail appearance when infact he posses highly developed muscles though he hides them well.

Percival is blonde haired and fair skinned and has a rather delicate looking bone structure and jawline. Though there is something about the shape of his nose and chin that makes him unmistakably a Deverin. He has a friendly face and is quick to smile with an appearance that most would associate with a scholar or kindly librarian. (Mostly due to the wire rimmed glasses that he wears)

Coming from a noble family Percival trends to dress well. His most common travelling attire consisting of riding boots, sturdy but smart dark leather trousers either in black or dark brown, a somewhat frilled white shirt and a colourful overcoat often in purple or blue. The outfit is all ways completed by a pair of wire rimmed glasses and often a satchel with a book or two in it. All in all Percival's appearance is none to threatening. Of course the sword that he wears on his belt and the buckler that he keeps with his pack seems to be a bit of an abnormally. If one were to study him closely they would also notice that beneath the fine clothes a chain shirt is concealed.

While Percival has the outward appearance of a noble slightly foppish gentleman with little experience of the real world the way he moves is somewhat contradictory to those who know what to look for. Percival moves with confidence his every movement calm and controlled as though he has been trained how to do so. He doesn't often react to sudden noises nor does he show fear even when travelling through more unsavoury neighbourhoods.

Personality: Percival is an inquisitive soul always eager to learn and understand how things work. He comes across as a rather affable chap if not a bit clumsy with his words and bit of a foolish individual. He is however naturally likeable and tends to make friends easily even if at times he can be a bit of a know it all and a bore.

While Percival loves to learn this desire is not just restricted to academic knowledge. Percival loves to encounter new challenges and experiences and despite his outward appearance he is secretly a bit of a risk taker and thrill seeker.

Percival is soft spoken, polite and kind and as such is often mistaken for being a bit of a soft touch. The truth is however buried deep down Percival actually has quite the temper, you just have to press the wrong button and you will unleash it. Percival can also be rather stubborn and argumentative when he believes he is in the right and it is pretty hard to get him to back down or intimidate him.

Percival is fiercely loyal to his family and would do anything for them. The quickest way to provoke Percival's temper would be to threaten his family. He also holds a great deal of respect for the elders of his family in particular his parents and Lord Hobart.

Background: Percival Deverin was born in the city of Magnimar to Edward and Amelia Deverin. While Percival is the great-nephew of Lord Hobart Deverin he has so many older cousins that is highly unlikely he will ever be the head of the house. Regardless of this fact Percival was still born in to a noble house and as such he had somewhat of a pampered and privileged upbringing.

As an only child Percival was somewhat spoiled and given whatever he could desire aswell as the finest education. Percival however was a rather thin and gangly child, who was always getting ill or tripping over his own feet. His parents therefore decided he would be best taught by a private tutor away from other boys his age. Percival at first did not mind this in the slightest as he got to spend his days close to his parents and he loved to learn so he would always have his head buried in a good book.

As Percival got older however he began to feel somewhat lonely as apart from his family or people who worked for his family Percival did not spend much time with other people particularly people his own age. Percival therefore asked his parents if he could study with other children. His parents however were worried that their son was too delicate to mix with other boys his age despite the fact that by now he was rather tall. After a great deal of persuasion his parents eventually agreed and Percival was sent to the Edelbert academy for boys.

The academy was not quite how Percival expected it to be. As not only the new kid but looking somewhat unusual due to being taller than than the other boys his age, being beanpole thin and wearing glasses he was singled out by a few of the other boys. While in classes Percival seemed to excel absorbing knowledge like a sponge outside of classes his life was made a living hell by the other boys. Having no previous experience with verbal or physical confrontation Percival was at first an easy target. He became flummoxed and flustered in response to verbal taunting and he was hopeless at defending himself physically and infact rather frail. Struggling Percival decided to turn to the one thing that had never failed him, books! Percival began to read up on many subjects in secret including how to condition your body to be stronger and how to defend yourself. Soon Percival was training himself in secret though he did his best to hide the results by always keeping his body covered. The boys at the academy soon were in for a big surprise when they found they could no longer bully Percival who not only no longer seemed to fear them but was suddenly able to overpower them.

When Percival graduated the academy he graduated with honours, he was by now a rather tall young man though he remained on the skinny side and was deceptively frail looking. While he had learnt a lot from his time at the academy what Percival had gained in particular was confidence. Upon leaving the academy Percival began to work for the family business. His father in particularly owned a brewery aswell as being a dealer of fine wines. Percival at first would often travel with his father to learn the trade as they traveled around the land making deals to both buy supplies and sale their wares.

Being a 'gentleman' the art of swordplay had ofcourse been covered in the academy and Percival had picked up the skill quite quickly at this point in time however he wore a sword more as decoration then anything else. Returning to Magnimar one year with his father after a particularly good deal Percival found need for the sword that he carried. Bandits set upon the pair as they made their way home, Percival at first had been willing to hand over his coin when it was demanded of him however when one of the bandits roughly hurled his father out of the wagon that they had been travelling in Percival saw red. The gangly foppish looking young gentleman that he appeared to be took the bandits completely by surprise. With a cry of outrage Percival broke the first bandits nose before drawing his rarely used blade. What followed was perhaps the most angerous and the most exhilarating experience of Percival's life up until that point as he traded blows with the remaining bandits. The force of Percival's next blow had managed to disarm the closest bandit as he knocked his weapon out of his hand before he became involved in a much more wild exchange. The bandits had not expected such fierce resistance and wisely chose to retreat. Edward however had unfortunately landed rather poorly and had broken his leg. Percival was able to get him home again but after that day he was never able to travel quite as easily and Percival would increasingly be sent out as his representative.

Having seen how dangerous the world can be Percival decided to invest in a private tutor to teach him the finer points of combat. He also took to wearing a fine chain shirt when he travelled though he would conceal it beneath his clothing.

Role-play Example: Percival stifled a slight yawn as he trotted along on the back of the fine riding horse that he had borrowed for this trip. He was currently travelling on yet another business trip on his father's behalf. Stashed securely inside his satchel were a number of important documents that needed to be signed. In truth they were nothing that scandalous or exciting merely the most recent adjustment of prices and extensions of contracts but never the less they would need to be agreed upon and signed. It was boring work but it was vital for the continued success of the family business. These particular set of documents were destined for a number of taverns in the village of Sandpoint. Percival allowed himself a small smile at this fact, the trip would at least give him the chance to visit some relatives that he rarely got to see. After all one of his favourite aunts lived in Sandpoint.

The caravan that Percival had been riding alongside had been making slow progress but despite the slow drudge that they were making Percival realised that there was safety in numbers. Speaking of safety Percival glanced over at the caravan guard that had been hired to protect the caravan and quirked a skeptical eyebrow. The caravan had only invested in a single guard most likely to save on expenses but the guard they had chosen looked like he had been cut price himself. Now Percival knew not to judge purely based on appearance after all Percival himself did not cut a very intimidating figure with his thin lanky frame and his fancy noble get up but he could more than handle himself in a fight. But still this guard did not even seem to know how to wear the second if not third hand chainmail that he wore and from the state of it he certainly didn't know how to take care of it. Percival began to wonder if the man's sword was even sharp.

As he watched the guard Percival began to notice that the caravan had begun to slow to an even slower pace than what was usual and the man was looking particularly nervous. Suspecting that something was up Percival lightly flicked his horses reigns and urged it forwards to the beginning of the procession.

"What appears to be the matter my good man?" Percival called out politely causing the caravan guard to flinch in surprise.

The guard fidgeted obviously unsure of himself before responding. "There's goblins on the road up ahead..." the man eventually replied looking deeply troubled.

"I see that is a frightful bother, how many are we dealing with?" Percival then asked as he adjusted his glasses and squinted down the road.

"'bout... half a dozen..." the man responded with a frown.

"You know I read in a book once that goblins are deadly afraid of horses... I believe it mentioned they had a fear of dogs aswell but it is the equine phobia that is important..." Percival commented offhandedly getting only a blank look in return. "We happen to have several horses to hand, granted they are of the riding variety and not trained for battle but I would endeavour to guess the little creatures could not tell the difference..." Percival elaborated raising his eyebrows slightly hoping that the guard would catch the hint.

Percival ended up dramatically sighing and rolling his eyes, the man just could not take a hint. "Look my good man, why don't you line up the horses gather up a few of the men from the caravan and we'll gallop forwards. I'd wager the finest wine in all of Magnimar that the little blighted will turn tail and run!" Percival explained finally having run out of patience. 'Sandpoint can't come quick enough... I need a good drink after all this' Percival thought to himself. It wasn't the the goblins were the problem... no it's was dealing with this incompetent and dimwitted guard!

Name: Naugrimm Bridgeburner
Race: Mountain Dwarf
Class: Unchained Rogue
Party Role: Scout and Striker
Alignment: Neutral Good (emphasis on the Neutral)
Traits/Drawback: Family Ties (campaign trait), Grounded, Reactionary; Family Ties (drawback)

Physical Description:
Standing belligerently outside "The Fatman's Feedbag", the squat profile of a Dwarven lad is outlined in juxtaposition to the dark alley behind him as an errant ray of sunlight pierces the cloudy sky above. His beard unbraided, sheltering hood raised, and a comparatively lithe frame would almost fool a person to believe a short Human man stood there. The heavy bone structure and density of muscle on the frame would, upon closer inspection reveal that indeed it was a young Dwarf.

Revealed by the fleeting sun, this dwarf is geared up as if heading for a fight. Overtop a padded gambeson and leather-lined chauses, all in a dark muddy brownish-black, is a hardened leather lamellar hauberk. A hooded poncho of the same color casts his face in shadow despite the sunbeam as he brings a cigar to his mouth. His skin is not the heavy brown of the deep dwellers, nor the charred tan of his desert cousins, but a sun-warmed clay hue common to the mountain dwelling residents of Janderhoff nearby. A heavily laden pack, little more than shadow behind him on the ground, gives lie to his apparent languidness. Several weapons are also apparent on or near his person; a sturdy crossbow, a dwarven made tomahawk, several daggers, and a wide-bladed short sword.

Dwarf or Human, it is blindingly obvious to any observer that the person revealed is equipped and intent on some serious endeavor. Possibly he is one of the god-touched Adventurers who pass through. Most likely though said passerby would, at least in Sandpoint, quickly move on as cold glare and bared steel focus on any overly-curious interlopers.

Personality:

When still in Janderhoff, Naugrimm's reputation was of a sometimes boisterous youth whose steady disposition and thoughtfulness helped counter his cousins impulsive tendencies. That said, it's also true that his cousins personalities were part of why he enjoyed being around them, as the excitement could be very addictive. This didn't take long to include the Varisian traders whose his Uncle often did business with, as they seemed to take every opportunity to enjoy life that was available. Song, dancing, drink and mischief of all kinds could be had while business was good.

After his exile however, he spent many years steeped in anger with no specific target, which he took out upon the world in general. His temper flared more often and he took insult at every slight shown him. It took some time, and prodding from his varisian brothers, to move past this anger and settle into the calmer spirit he'd maintained before leaving Janderhoff. His temper has cooled into something less tempestuous and his more pragmatic nature has reestablished itself. Still, he has changed over the near decade of exile, as the melancholy of being seperated from home and kin take its toll. Strangers would call him taciturn and unfriendly, and his humour while always dry has gained a cynical edge to it.

Role-play Example:
Naugrimm sat in the 'Feedbag' and spent some of his dwindling coin on the colored-water they called beer in this joke of a Tavern. If he had even a single half-baked reason to be doing anything else, he'd be doing that instead. Here he was, wasting away in the middle of the day instead of putting his skills to honest labour. His father must be burning with the shame of his son's idleness when he could be working instead. A wry snort of laughter breaks free, and Naugrimm chuckles softly to himself with the thought that his Uncle would be displeased as well. Different kinds of work in mind, but both Father and Uncle would have striped his hide if they'd seen him lounging about like this.

"Not like I've much choice..." the Dwarf mumbled to himself between gulps of the weak brew in his hand. Jubrayl Vhiski, shadow-partner of this very establishment, hard put a hold on any "side-work" his associates might get up to. With the Swallowtail festival happening in a few days time, Jubrayl didn't want any of his crews tipping their hands early or making things more difficult for the rest of them. Naugrimm knew it was the smart move, too. He just hated not doing something to put some coin in his hands. Normally, Jubrayl had him busy enough he didn't have to think about old memories. Technically, he was even working now, acting as bouncer for the 'Feedbag' during the day. Things were so quiet around here though, that there was little or nothing for the scrappy Dwarf to pay much attention to. Just old drunks spending their last coin drowning old memories like they do everyday.

The warped door creaked in warning just before it begrudgingly opened, almost slamming against the wall as a few of the Scznarni's boys entered. Naugrimm gulped the last of his beer before pushing off his stool to hop to the floor. Solid arms set on squared hips, Naugrimm faced the latest entrants as they passed by, getting a nod or greeting from several as they found seats around the tavern. A slim halfling threw him a vulgar sign before running out of reach, but Naugrimm just sneered in its direction while focusing on the 'lead' Varisian in this group. "Well? What's the word, Slim? I'm 'bout to lose my everlovin' mind sittin' aroun' drinkin' piss-water and crakin' my knuckles."

"Ya might well as sit back down, have 'nother, Noog!" Slim starts, "Don't call me that!!" Naugrimm spits forcefully, only to be ignored as Slim continues talking over his head. "Chief ain't changed his mind, not about likely to either. Unless he tells ya himself, ain't no jobs done till his say. You know the deal, don't muck it up!" Slim slips by Naugrimm to take a seat at the bar, slapping Naugrimm companionably on the shoulder as he passess. Naugrimm just shakes it off with a sour look, and heads for the door as he takes a partly-smoked stogie from his pouch. "I'm grabbin' a smoke, outside the stink of ya degenerates. Don't burn the place down, I ain't 'bout to put it out for ya's."

Name: Stevak Krivan

Race: Human

Class: Unchained Barbarian

Party Role: Melee

Alignment: Chaotic Good

Physical Description: Piercing angry eyes surrounded by faded self-inflicted needle tattoos... this is the weathered face of Stevak Krivan. Stevak, while not physically imposing, carries himself with a heavy sense of gravitas. Covered in the filth of the untamed wilderness, his body bears the scars of numerous encounters. As his youth has faded, the morning hours have become harder... the bones a bit heavier... the knees... stiff. Yet, Stevak's eye's still sparkle in the presence of children... the only truly innocent beings left in this forsaken land.

Personality: The sun set many years ago for Stevak... he does not pretend otherwise. He carries the guilt of his grandson's death as a yoke upon his shoulders and his lone purpose is to atone... as if he ever could... for his sins. Stevak knows right from wrong and he has no faith in the laws of man to make that decision for him.

Backstory: Stevak lived a humble life in the shadows of the Iron Peaks... he hunted... provided fresh meat for the village... farmed a bit too. He survived. His wife died... sickness... his boys became men. Stevak Krivan lived a good life. His sons had children of their own... they loved their Papa. And then the day came... the boys, thats what they were called 'the boys,' were playing as children would do... in the fields, skirting the edge of the forest.

Stevak had warned them... quite sternly to be true, about the dangers lurking beyond the tree-line. His warnings were a premonition that came horribly true. The giants revealed themselves with their blood curling howls moments before they struck. The boys were easy prey... fodder for the vicious beasts. Stevak wasn't there... not in time to make any difference. By the time the simple man reached the scene of the slaughter all he found was the blood blanketing the blades of grass and smeared along the dirt as the loves of his life were dragged to their doom.

It would be safe to say that the old Stevak died that day... the Stevak Krivan that had simply existed amidst the chaos of the world. Stevak looked now to the forest and only saw his grandson's mournful eyes staring out from the deep shadows. The eyes spoke the bitter truth... Stevak... Papa... had not protected what was his. Stevak knew he could never atone for his negligence... even if his sons said he was not to blame. It did not matter. Stevak knew that he was.

Stevak, equipping himself as best he could, entered the foreboding woods... intent on soon joining his nephews.

Roleplay:
The TavernStevak sat alone at his table in the tavern, eyes downcast, examining the deep scratches gouged into the time worn table. The middle-aged man ran his crooked fingers absentmindedly along the longer grooves, listening intently as the bard spun his tale about heroic adventurers saving the day. As the story came to a close, Stevak’s hand closed tightly around his half empty tankard of ale and he downed what was left in a single gulp. Wiping the frothy remnants from his lips, The visibly angry man slammed the tankard down hard onto the table with a resounding thud.

“Bullcrap,” Stevak announced loudly as he forcibly stood up, causing his chair to tumble backwards onto the floor. "bullcrap… you speak of the campaigning life as if its a grand adventure… a holiday.” Stevak stood tall, and even though short of stature, those in attendance couldn’t help but notice his corded muscles and the numerous wicked scars that looked as if they danced and melded with the tattoos that covered his exposed skin. “I appreciate your ability to spin a tale, but tell it like it really is. Tell them that their friends will be torn to pieces before their eyes… the blood of those same friends warm on their skin as it splashes like red water rushing to a gutter.”

“Adventuring ain’t no place for the kindhearted… nor the foolish. Tell it true!” Stevak demanded. The man’s eyes were haunted and seemed to stare past the bard as he spoke. “There ain’t going to be no happy ending here… no heroes… just kill or be killed. I’ve done my share of killing and I’m more than willing to do some more… but don’t you go lyin’ to the young folk… tell it true!”

Stevak turned and grabbed his chair from the floor, placing it next to the table before he sat back down. “As you were bard… my apologies,” Stevak muttered, seemingly embarrassed by his outburst. Catching the eye of a barmaid he gestured for another ale and sank back into silence.

Thinks She is Much Funnier Than She Actually Is
Maketahk Barra

right-aligned image
Titles: The Mischievous, The Best Barra Daughter And Probably Favorite Child

Race: Halfling
Class: Incanter
Spheres of Focus: Warp, secondary Illusion and Mind
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Deity: The Lantern King
Age: 23

Favorite Item: Her marionette strings
Favorite Hobbies: Telling jokes, playing pranks, and staying still
Least Favorite Food: Elf
Least Favorite Sensation: Does not enjoy being manipulated

Character Concept: The better jester!
Intended role: Party Face, Battlefield Controller

Traits: Convincing Liar, Slippery, Eager Performer
Drawback: Occult Bargain

Physical description: Maketahk is disconcerting to say the least. She has been 'blessed' with an eternally youthful appearance which is a bit too youthful, making her look like a rather small child. Worse, her roughly textured hair and opaque eyes give her a distinctly doll-like appearance as she moves about, a resemblance that becomes exact when she purposefully remains still and unblinking. She purposefully exaggerates this by wearing clothes very reminiscent of what one would expect a child's doll to wear, such as plain dresses and earth-colored vests. It doesn't help that she carries a stuffed doll modeled after herself. She calls this doll Mocketahk.

Personality: While her looks may be innocent, if creepy, her mind is one honed sharp from utilizing what she has been given. She knows how to leverage her uncanny looks to unnerve when she wants, to fool when she needs, and to get her way by the end of the day. Thankfully, her way typically is her looking for an entertaining story or a funny new joke that she can then kick up the chain during her morning prayers. Her sole drive seems to be ferreting out amusements and novel experiences, making her mostly harmless, and she's more than willing to help out.

Biography: Most devout followers of deities are indoctrinated into the faith early, as children. For Maketahk, this did not happen, and her years growing up were pleasant and uneventful after that early section where her parents freaked out over their daughter's slightly abnormal appearance, one that stuck with her as she grew up - largely due to how utterly not-freaky-looking her older brother is. However, in her mid-teens, she sat down with the town's resident holy man and had a long, lengthy conversation about the gods of the realm, a visit that was sparked by her newfound magical abilities, something that she had been keeping secret. There, she had him lay out as many deities as he could think of, which were a lot, before she fell in love with The Lantern King. A god who loves laughter and jokes and pranks matched her own personality and likes perfectly, and Maketahk latched onto him with all her might, developing her own worship of The Lantern King. After all, there was no god better suited to her!

Not only did this help direct and focus some of that youthful energy that Maketahk had just a bit too much of, it further honed her talents. Where before she could only spit out flashes of images or jolt in place, her practice that was tinged with religious fervor quickly grew the breadth of what she could do, allowing her to move sizeable distances without traveling the intervening space, to project her own image multiple times over, and to project her jokes into the minds of others. Unfortunately, she soon came across the issue that her talents had no real place for her hometown, and so she soon left, leaving behind her parents and brother with only the shortest of warnings.

Flaw and Fear: For all her mirth and laughter, Maketahk's humor sometimes has a very harsh edge to it that is anything but fun - in particular, her jokes and pranks going too far is something she is semi-consistently scolded for. This unfortunately meets with her greatest fear, which is that she is unfit to find love, with her appearance being... obviously problematic for finding someone to call her own. These two factors constantly bounce off each other and feed into the other and can cause her mood and behavior to swing wildly.

Evening, Little Blue!

I just got around to reading the article you posted on the Feat Tax problem, and I have to say I love it! I've downloaded his PDF and am now eager for the release of Hearth & Blade as well. So many classes that lack the feat slots of Fighter so often feel gimped or pushed into cookie-cutter builds to stay relevant. Thank you for posting this!

Along the same lines, I wondered if you had considered Consolidated Skills, as well? Except for some of the Crafting, Knowledge and Profession skills, so many of them just fit better together as a whole IMO.

Spheres Character
Adriel le Blanc
Character Details
Race:Half-ElfAge:22Class:Fey AdeptAlignment:CGRole:Crowd Control, Battlefield Control
Physical DescriptionPersonality
A pretty half-elf with dirty blonde, wavy hair, if someone were to make Adriel stand in a lineup of her kind, she would be perfectly average. She stands at about 5'4", has cool, blue eyes and lightly tanned skin. Her figure is subdued and none of her feminine features are greatly prominent, nor is her muscle or fat. The only thing that stands out about her is the strong, sweet scent of floral honey that is distracting to a supernatural degree betraying her use of magics. She is dressed in light and loose clothing dyed in pale or earthy colors. She wears a set of open-toed leather sandals that covered most of her calf in crisscrossing hardened material, a pale brown skirt with asymmetrical lengths, a girdle colored and styled to look like forest foliage, and a teal cotton shirt with open shoulders and exposed cleavage.A good-hearted, down to earth girl by all accounts. Not that one cannot find flaws in her ditzy, year-round festive mood and behavior, but she truly seems to be blessed from birth with delusions of a kind, dream-like world. She enjoys the art of dance, the taste of sweet foods and bright colors. Her dislikes, though limited, include: lack of hygiene, complex rules and general unfairness.
TraitsDrawbacks
Lucid Dreamer, Minor Bioluminescence and Eager PerformerNaive
Background
Adriel is an adopted daughter of Korvosa, likely the result of a tryst between a local noblewoman and some lustful rogue. She lived only a brief stint at an orphanage before she began a harsh, but comparatively fair life working in a Varisian acting troupe. She oft played the part of a fairy along with other girls that were her foster sisters. And with compelling performances beyond that of most children, she would awaken many a morning telling her foster parents about how the fairies have been giving her tips in her dreams. She was, of course looked at like an odd child, even among some actors. During a performance, when her skin began to glow and project miraculous images to stun the crowds of Korvosa, it was then that her foster father believed that Adriel was telling the truth about fairies.
When Adriel grew up, she could not perform the youthful roles that she did in the past, and, while perfectly capable, her foster family tried to push her out more into the world past Korvosa, instead of hampering her talents. She in efforts to follow her foster family's wishes, sent out a request to join the theater in Sandpoint. After a long period of waiting, she decided, with a helpful push out the door, to begin her adventure to the town of Sandpoint.
