Okay! I rushed home and got started on my roleplay sample. I think the first draft is complete. Let me know if you need anything else. I thought of letting the Captain catch him reading the ships logs.

Due to a conversation on Discord, I want to address something. I like my games to be believable. I like characters' actions to be justified.

For example, hiding in plain sight. Depending on the source of this kind of ability, how I approach it will change. This is an Extraordinary Ability, not magic. I wouldn't let a rogue walk into the middle of a dozen guards who are on high alert, all watching him, and just give him a roll to disappear from their view. That breaks immersion for me. I would let him craft a post on how he uses a combination of terrain, trickery, and timing to get past the guards though.

If you think this might be a problem with something you want to do with your character, let me know. It's mostly a matter of effort and creativity for me, working to craft an immersive story together.

This is how I'd imagine D&D hide in plain sight to work, when not using invisibility or something. A more anime-like example would be a ninja using a smokebomb, then holding up a screen to camouflage with a section of wall some guards are looking at.

For neither of my characters this is a relevant issue (as one is an illusionist and the other uses his voice to summon wind, rain and mists) but I would like to defend the mechanical feasibility of rogues or rangers hiding in their favored terrain just because the ability does not include flavor text on how they are concealed.

Edit: Another, while comedically exaggerated use would be Mel Brook's movie, High Anxiety, where his character walks through Airport Security with a gun by acting loud and irritating to deal with. Not exactly disappearing from sight as there were some bluffs and poor disguises thrown in there, but it is another method to divert attention from onlookers from noticing what they consider important enough to start an encounter.

All good examples, there are a lot of different ways a player can pull off the effect without breaking immersion, or resorting to something along the lines of "it's invisibility". Rogues can get invisibility from Ninja Tricks, but they have to invest in Ki, and it's limited use.

I really don't foresee this being an issue, and Hide in Plain Sight was only an example of a principle. I'd let things slide more in person, but with play-by-post, we have the time to craft a good post with compelling narrative. Since it doesn't give flavor on how stealth is achieved, all the more reason for the player to write it up, imo. Enough people in Discord thought I should at least bring it up, though, so I did .
