Them's the Rules

Here's how the mechanics of the game work:

When you try to do something, roll a d10 and add your most relevant trait. The GM tells you what number you need to equal or beat. If the task is dangerous, you gain a point of DANGER if you fail. If you ever roll equal to or under your DANGER, youíre in serious trouble - dead, trapped, lost, or captured.

USING MAGIC IS ALWAYS DANGEROUS.

The GMís characters donít use dice; they force you to roll them.

Remember: Most tasks that are normal to humans are really difficult for animals, unless theyíre broken down into smaller steps. You donít have opposable thumbs, and all you know of the human world is what the witch taught you. You can talk to wild animals of the same or similar species, and to all of your fellow Familiars.

You can lower your DANGER by solving or running away from your problems.

A Note on Languages

When it comes to languages, the rules read, "You can talk to wild animals of the same or similar species." I've added the phrase, "And to all of your fellow Familiars," so that communication among PCs will be possible without complication (i.e. having to roll to understand one another all the time).

The way I see it, the Familiars have basically developed their own dialect, influenced by their housemates and mistress. As a result, they may also know a little of another species' language, and even a few words in Human. PCs will have to roll to see how much of any given written or spoken phrase they understand, if it isn't in their species' native tongue or Family vernacular.

Blessings of the Witch

I'm adding a mechanic called "Blessings of the Witch" which will function a lot like "Inspiration" in 5e D&D. Blessings of the Witch gives the PC a one-time opportunity to add +3 to any roll, and can be used even after they know the result of their roll, effectively taking a task from "Near-impossible" to "Basic" on the difficulty scale. Blessings of the Witch cannot be transferred from PC to PC, but multiple PCs can hold Blessings at the same time (only one Blessing per PC).

Blessings of the Witch will be dispensed at the GM's discretion, awarded for exceptional RP, brilliant problem-solving, and (probably most often) use of animal puns and idioms. Players are encouraged to nominate their fellow PCs for Blessings in the OOC thread.

Posting Conventions

I'm not super picky, but I've found that including a picture and wrapping everything in [FIELDSET] tags seems to keep game threads neat and easy to read. Consider using the following format in your game posts:

Controlling Rattinís Rats

Here are the rules for controlling Rattin’s crew of Not-So-Goodfellas:
  • When just one of Rattin’s Not-So-Goodfellas assists a Familiar with a task, simply reduce the DC (amount determined by GM).
  • When the entire mob of Not-So-Goodfellas works together to perform a task, treat them as one creature with the following Traits: C0 F6 S4 Q4.
  • The Not-So-Goodfellas track DANGER just like the PCs.
  • If the Not-So-Goodfellas ever reach 3 points of DANGER they become demoralized and will abandon their mission.
  • There is no way to remove DANGER from the Not-So-Goodfellas’ total, so call on them sparingly!

And here’s an example:

The Not-So-Goodfellas attempt to swarm a human and steal his hat. They will test Sly at DC 10 and it is DANGEROUS. The Not-So-Goodfellas’ current DANGER is 1. So, in this case, if the rats roll a 6 or higher they succeed. If they roll less than 6, they fail and take a point of DANGER. If they roll a 1 they fail, take a point of DANGER, and they are “in serious trouble - dead, trapped, lost, or captured.”
