Outplay 2021 The System - Play Example

OOGMThe following is an example of play using Outplay 2021 The System. It is provided to show how the flow of the game will work through Outplay, and help those looking to make characters understand the build decisions they are making. The actual scenario is an adaptation from a game I have run several times in the past, with a few modifications. Some of the OOC text has been cleaned up from the original posts, for the purpose of this play example.

After two weeks of travel, your ragtag band of adventurers has reached Fort Rythey. You are an elite square of the Crossing Companions Adventuring Guild, contracted to come help clear up a mystery that has recently plagued the soldiers of Rythey. Things have gone missing. Little things, like trinkets, silverware, the odd moment. It seems like nearly everybody has had something stolen. And so, Captian Brandon Highwater has contracted the Crossing Companions to send a group of adventurers, a neutral party, to sort the issue out.

"Welcome to Rythey!" Captian Highwater exclaims, meeting the travelers. Rythey was an out-of-the-way fort, set against the large icy mountains that lay further to the south. It was an outpost that watched a busy trade route, between civilized regions of the territory. "Why don't you tell me a little about yourselves, then I'll give you a tour of the fort."

Thulién the Wild Doe: Cadet of the Queen's Guard
right-aligned image

The first of the adventurers to address the captain was a young elf. She appeared to be barely more than a girl, but with elves it was always hard to say exactly. She was lean to the point of almost looking gangly, though her movements were not at all awkward. Rather she had the graceful gait of a wild woodland animal. Her short-cropped ash-blonde hair was tucked behind her rather prominent ears.

She approached Captain Highwater with the cautious and attentive gaze of a hunter, always sizing up each person she came across as a potential threat.

"Well met, captain," she greeted the man with a voice that was somehow brusque and yet melodic at the same time, "I am Thulién, Cadet of the Dream Queen's Guard. I have been sent on sabbatical to train with the Crossing Companions. My lady, Titania felt it mete that I should learn more of the ways of outsiders ere I rise within the ranks to her personal attendants. I am eager to learn as much of your mortal ways as I can so that I may return to the lands of faerie."

OOC:I will need to start by rolling up a character.

Trim Meadowlark
right-aligned image
The second member of the party sent to Fort Rythey is a young halfling male. This pint sized man has a warm pleasant face and deep brown eyes. He exudes a sense of comfort and gentleness. His chestnut locks have several twigs and even a leaf caught in their waves like he spent last night sleeping in a pile of leaves (which he did). By the golden oak leaf pinned to his cloak it is obvious to all that he must be a cleric of the halfling goddess of nature and wanderlust, Sheela Peryroyl.

The halfling looks Captain Highwater up and down…and from his position staring at the captain’s belt buckle, that is way up and then down. The halfling gives the captain a deep bow with a flourish of his hand, as if he was a courtier in the finest palace and not a halfling with twigs sticking out of his hair.

”Captain Highwater, greetings and may you find your road smooth and easy this day.”

Bending back upright the smiling halfling glances around the fort, trying to cover his nervousness. For this is his first assignment with the Crossing Companions having just contracted with them a week ago. He is a newly ordained cleric and joining the Companions seemed like a great chance to get out, see the world, and to help people in the name of his goddess.

Having gotten the butterflies in his stomach under control the young cleric looks back at Captain Highwater and continues his introduction.

”I am Trimolous Meadowlark, but you can just call me Trim…most people do.” The halfling reaches up and hands an acorn to a large red squirrel riding on his shoulder. “And this is Pippen-squeak. We are very glad to be here and to hopefully be of service to you.”

Character Creation

After their introduction, Captian Highwater took the odd crew around the fortress Rythey for a tour. The main gates, and the road the fortress protected, were to the north. Square shaped, the fort had high stone walls with ramparts around the whole structure. A tower sat on the northwest side of the fortress, where a spyglass was used to watch the roads. Also to the west were the guard's barracks and small Chapple. To the east sat Captian Highwater's manor, a pasture and barn, and the mess hall all the way to the south.

As Captian Highwater explained the purpose of each building, he noted a few of the fort's residents. Pavel was the local priest. Melenor was the local cook and quartermaster. On the southern wall, Captian Highwater pointed out to a small farm behind the fortress, run by a man named Rufus. While on the southern ramparts, however, Captian Highwater stopped and looked towards the sky above the mountains to the south. What looked like a flock of birds had left the mountains, and were flying towards the fortress. "That is odd," said Captian Highwater. "We shouldn't have birds migrating right now." As the flock grew closer, it soon became apparent that these were not birds. Rather, they were flying kobolds! "To Arms!" Yelled Captian Highwater, giving the command for his troops to repair for an attack.

OOGMI would like you to describe what your character will do to help prepare to help defend Fort Rythey, and then make an Outplay Roll to see how well it works out! We are not in combat yet.

Trim Meadowlark
right-aligned image
Trim was thoroughly enjoying himself as the Captain lead them around the fortress, showing them this and that, introductions were made to some of the more important members of the fort staff, Trim even discovered a new word – ‘Mess Hall.’ It appeared to simply be a dining facility, but the curly haired halfling figured perhaps the residents of this fort regularly got into food fights during dinner and hence the name. Trim smiled and made note to be sure to get extra helpings at dinner tonight, so he had plenty of ammunition for the inevitable battle of the cuisine.

Trim’s delight at this new experience is shattered when Captain Highwater starts speaking in concerned tones about strange birds. The halfling peers in the direction of the flying shapes and fels like they look vaguely familiar, but his mind refuses to make the connection to something that is flying through the air. That is when it suddenly becomes clear that the flying shapes are kobolds…flying kobolds.

Trim’s mouth hangs open for a moment in dumbfounded wonder and then he says, ”Kobolds…they fly now!?”

Snapping out of his flabbergasted astonishment, Trim grabs the golden oak leaf attached to his cloak, and calls out, ”May Sheela’s blessing be upon us all in this our time of need!”

Rolls and Actions
Action = Cast Sheela's blessing

Dice Outplay roll to Cast Spell:

Thulién the Wild Doe: Cadet of the Queen's Guard
right-aligned image

Thulién followed close behind the captain as he led the small crew on their tour of the fort, glancing dispassionately at each landmark as he pointed them out. She understood that her queen wanted her to gain more varied experience, but she still could not fathom what these humans had to teach her. She made mental note of the various fortifications and their potential weakpoints (of which there were many) almost as a matter of instinct. She took little interest in the primitive structures outside of their practical purpose, and even less interest in the names of the various folk who were introduced to them. She had been raised within the court of the queen, and always maintained a polite demeanor, but she was unable to hide her apparent boredom from any who cared to look for it.

That is, until the captain drew attention to the "strange birds" on the horizon. Her keen elven eyes scanned the skies and immediately spied the true nature of the approaching threat. Before the call to arms had even escaped Capt. Highwater's lips, Thulién leapt into action. With the grace of a gazelle, she sprang toward the southern wall of the fortress, her long green cloak billowing in her wake. Her longspear gripped tightly in her right hand, she drew her left hand upwards and pressed her lips against the ring she wore there. She murmured a swift incantation under her breath as she ran.

"Lady of ladies, lend these folk your strength,
Unworthy as they may be of your grace;
Hold fast these walls, 'gainst all oncoming foes,
Lay your blessing upon this humble place."

As she arrived at the wall, she pressed her signet ring against the stones, sending shimmering waves of iridescent splendor radiating outwards along the fortifications, though it was uncertain if they had any effect other than the visual.

OOC:
Actions
  • Moving to the southern wall (that is the direction you said the kobolds were coming from, right?)
  • Casting Protection of the Summer Court to fortify the defensive walls.

Trim cast a spell of blessing on himself and Thulién, in preparation for the coming conflict with the flying kobolds. Thulién followed up by attempting to casting Protection of the Summer Court. Something went terribly wrong with the spell though. The radiant energy that should have been protecting the walls was certainly shining. But, instead of shinning outward to protect the fortress walls, it was instead shining directly into the eyes of the Fort's defenders. "By Bruhaha's Grace, Thulién, what did we do to offend your Lady that she would curse us so? Nevermind men. Shield your eyes best you can, and fight!"

The Kobolds were on top of the soldiers, sooner than they had anticipated. Swarming flying lizardfolk assaulted the soldiers on the ramparts. Captain Highwater called out commands to his soldiers, to hold holding their positions and use their spears to attack any kobold flew too close. A few archers prepared to fire arrows from their positions on the corner towers. "Feel free to join in!" Captian Highwater called out to his two newcomers.

OOGM2 successes on casting Sheela's blessing. Since we have 2 PCs, each have a 1d6 to add to your next Outplay Roll.

Protection of the Summer Court - we never specified what this spell was going to do exactly, but by the usage, it looks like it is intended to put up a protective wall around whoever or whatever you cast it on. Let's take this as, it adds a BONUS to a player, if you successfully cast it on them for their next action. For a structure, it would provide success towards the goal of defending Rythey.

However, the spell failed miserably. So, as a cost, Both players will have a PENALTY on your next roll.

Choose a combat-type action. Either an attack, a spell, an interaction with the soldiers to help them do their job better, or whatever else you can come up with. Both will have the benefit of an extra 1d6 from Sheela's blessing and suffer a PENALTY (+1 if Rolling Low, -1 if Rolling High on all die)

Thulién the Wild Doe: Cadet of the Queen's Guard
right-aligned image

Thulién glared at the captain as he questioned her lady's favor. How was she to know what disgusting acts these humans had committed to earn the ire of the faerie realm. After all, she just got here. Nevertheless, she could not suffer to see some (possibly) innocent people come to harm, certainly not at the hands of this vile horde that was so intent upon bloodshed. She did not dignify Captain Highwater's question with an answer, though she did leap to the defense of the fort in a more direct manner this time.

"Foul beasts!" she cried out as she vaulted to the tops of the ramparts, "Begone from this place or you shall taste the steel of Thulién as the only fruits of your folly!"

Bracing herself against the stone of the wall, she gripped her longspear tightly in both hands and made ready to intercept the first foe that should attempt to cross over the wall.

OOC:
Actions
  • Leaping to the top of the wall
  • Attacking the kobolds with her longspear
Using Elven Longspear and Defensive Stance should mean 3d6 (+1 from the bless). Trying for under 4, but each die receives a penalty of +1.
    Dice Casting:
    1d6+1 (3)+1 Total = 4
    1d6+1 (2)+1 Total = 3
    1d6+1 (5)+1 Total = 6
    1d6+1 (3)+1 Total = 4
Ok, so that means 1 under 4 and 2 hit 4 exactly. That means Thulién has 5 successes, which I would assume means she does a stellar job defending the fort.

Trim Meadowlark
right-aligned image
While Trim finds the flashing lights created by Thulién fascinating and they remind him of a story he once read about a gnomish invention called disco, the halfing certainly also finds them distracting and unhelpful for fighting flying kobolds. Squinting his eyes against the glare, Trim assesses the situation facing the fort and finds it discouraging. Winged lizardfolk were harassing and assaulting the human defenders of the fort and Captain Highwater already seemed less than impressed with the members of Crossing Companions Adventuring Guild.

Reaching up and patting the head of the red squirrel riding his shoulder, Trim says, “Well Pippen should we see if we can do something to show the good captain that his investment in hiring our guild was a good one? Now don’t be distressed. I’m going to shoot some acorns at these pesky kobolds, but I can always make you some more later.”

Trim takes his mighty Halfling trident-sling, spins the weapon around, and then jams the tinned forks into the cracks in between the stones of the fort wall. Then he calls on his goddess and, in his hand, there suddenly appear four glowing acorns. Trim loads these magical nuts into his sling, pulls back on the pouch, stretching the unique flexible cordage and bending the shaft of the weapon back…back…until he lets go and sends the acorns flying.

Rolls and Actions
Cast Cantrip - Sheela's Acorns - no roll needed Roleplay only

Action = Attack with Trident-sling with Signature Move - Ranged acorn attack

Outplay Roll Base 1d6 + 1d6 for Gear + 1d6 for Signature Move + 1d6 from Sheela's Blessing for a total of 4d6 with +1 penalty on each roll.
Dice Roll:
1d6+1 (2)+1 Total = 3

Dice Roll:
1d6+1 (2)+1 Total = 3

Dice Roll:
1d6+1 (4)+1 Total = 5

Dice Roll:
1d6+1 (6)+1 Total = 7

That roll results in Four Successes (by landing on CN exactly twice)

Thulién blunder with the shinny walls earlier was quickly forgiven, as the Elf performed her signature Defensive Stance to near perfection. The long elven spear she wielded stabbed and jabbed every flying Kobold that came near, to the point that the swarm was nearly deterred. Trim followed up with an onslaught of magical acorns shot from his trident sling. It may have ruined the acorns as a snack for Pippen, but it was highly effective in deterring Kobolds. It seemed as though the attack on Rythey was nearing an end. Between the Crossing Companions Adventuring Guild, and the Soldier of Rythey, the first wave of Kobolds was quickly turned away.

But, the battle was not over yet. Just as it looked like the fight was over, with the kobolds flying away, the real threat emerged. A massive Kobold, perhaps even the size of a Dragon came swooping in, and landed on the ramparts next to Captian Highwater! With one hand, it grabbed the Captian and lifted him up above his head. It opened its mouth, and was about to drop the Captain in, swallowing him whole!

OOGMSo far so good, 7 successes towards defending Rythey came in a hurry. Now you are in a real pickle though. You only have a moment to react, to save Captain Highwater from becoming a Kobold Snack! Both the Blessing and Penalty were used last round, so no modifiers this time around.

Trim stares shocked as the ginormous kobold crashes down upon the fort walls. The blow to the wall sends the halfling stumbling for a second. It is only after he catches his balance against the ramparts that Trim sees that the huge kobold has grabbed Captain Highwater and is about to toss the poor man down its gullet.

Trim reaches up and pats the red squirrel that is riding on his shoulder. ”Pippen you might not want to go along for this ride.”

Trim gives the squirrel a gentle shove that Pippen jumps down and runs along the battlements. Then, hiking up his rope belt, the brown-haired halfing takes a deep breath and then says, ”Well here goes everything.”

Suddenly, Trim blinks out of existence and then reappears standing in the mouth of the giant kobold. A surprising place for a small halfling for sure. The small cleric then spins his trident sling around and rams the sharpened triple points deep into the soft palate and jams the staff portion against the roof of the beast’s mouth.

Thulién the Wild Doe: Cadet of the Queen's Guard
right-aligned image

Thulién demonstrably sighed as she saw Captain Highwater in peril. This arrogant human who had the audacity to question her abilities from the start now was in a position of helplessness and needed her assistance. The temptation to simply leave him to his fate was strong, and a lesser elf might have easily given in to such temptation, but Thulién had a duty to represent her Lady of the Summer Court. She recognized that her action or inaction would impact the reputation of her liege in these uncivilized lands. As little as she might care what a pack of filthy humans thought, she could not be held responsible for besmirching her Lady's name.

"Captain!" she shouted to draw the man's attention, "Be ready to leap on my mark!"

Her keen elven eyes scanned the great beast's arm. With a movement as sudden as it was graceful, she sent her longspear sailing through the air towards the creature, aiming so slice through the tendons in the wrist, forcing it to release its grip.

OOC:
Actions
  • Looking to use her longspear to assist the captain in escaping
Using Elven Longspear (forgoing use of skills to see what happens when we have to roll only 2 dice) should mean 2d6. Trying for under 4
    Dice Spear Toss:

    1d6 4
So, hitting the number exactly on one die, and under on the other = 3 successes

In an instant, Trim and Thulién were ready to fill the roles of Heroes that they were. Trim put himself in the maw of the beast, using his magic and trident to jamp the Kobold's massive mouth open. Thulién threw her spear with precisions that could only be described as art, slicing the tendons of the arm that held Captain Highwater in the air. As Captain fell downward, the Kobold screamed in rage. It couldn't dislodge the trident from its mouth and decided to try and snap it in half by force instead. This gave Trim just enough time to jump out of harm's way as Kobold's jaw's closed. The trident didn't snap though, and instead, the three sharp prongs pierced through its tongue. The staff end forced its way into the beast's skull, going through its brain. It was a rash reaction that proved fatal. The massive Kobold fell dead off the walls, landing on the ground outside fort Rythey. A plume of dust rose from the ground as it hit with a massive thud.

Trim and Captain Highwater both needed a moment to get to their feet, and collect themselves. Once they did, it was obvious that the Captain had a newfound respect for the members of the Crossing Companions Adventuring Guild. "The God's have blessed us today to have you two here. Obviously, this isn't the reason I hired you to come, so I'll make sure to have a hefty bonus thrown in on your fees. Now, my men can clean this up, we have other matters to attend to."
