CYBERPUNK 2020: Chippin' In

CYBERPUNK 2020: Chippin' In

Attention: Deadline for submitting/completing applications is 10:00pm EST Friday 6/18/21

"Chips are buzzing, implants hot. Riding high, my slots are shot. Metal burning beneath my skin. I'm chippin' in! Chippin' in!"

- Kerry Eurodyne

SystemCyberpunk 2020 (2e)

SettingThe year is 2020...

The world of Cyberpunk takes place in an alternate reality that diverged from our own world in 1989 when the Soviet Union began to move toward reconciliation with Western Europe. In 1992, an economic alliance between the European Union and Soviet Union, known as the European Economic Community, placed economic tensions upon the United States. In 1993, these economic tensions caused the American government to panic; hackers on the payroll of the intelligence community began to manipulate the stock market to create an illusion of economic stability. When this duplicity was discovered most countries instituted trade embargoes on the United States that caused an economic depression known as the Collapse. In 1996, the United States suspended the Constitution as a means of stemming the chaos. As the situation degraded, the government turned to corporations to take control of public services. In the early 2000s, cyberware became the hottest fashion -- the best way to transcend the crappy world.

Night City is a fictional city located between Los Angeles and San Francisco. During the Collapse, Richard Night, a wealthy business magnate, purchased the city of Coronado from the state of California. No more government regulations meant no interference with corporate growth. The corporations reorganized and zoned urban areas so as to eliminate crime and poverty. It was a capitalist Mecca. But in 1994, Night was shot and killed in his penthouse. The corporations resorted to infighting. Corruption and crime became rampant. Neighborhoods that had once received corporate backing fell into disrepair. Gangs ran the streets. Back alley doctors, known as ripperdocs, replaced a healthcare system that only the wealthy could afford. Rock bands began to play music about tearing down the corporations. Mercenaries known as solos began to work for anyone who could afford to pay them. And media companies began to make huge profits reporting on all the chaos and destruction...

PlotDuring the early 1990s, the United States invaded several nations in Central America. Nixon's "War on Drugs" had been raging for 20 years. Drugs on the streets mixed with economic tensions had caused record crime rates in most American cities. The feds decided to declare a real war upon the nations that harbored drug cartels.

Sam Brown was a Green Beret from Brooklyn. Handsome -- blond hair -- blue eyes -- he became the poster boy for the war after conducting successful operations in Honduras and Nicaragua. American propagandists used him to justify the war and recruit young men into the military. He received the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts. He became a consultant for Militech International Armaments in the decades following the war.

Militech spent two decades mapping his brain. An experimental chip was impressed with his engrams. It can grant all of his combat abilities to the user. Espionage, explosives, firearms, martial arts. The works. The user becomes a "super soldier" once he or she is done chipping in. But a rogue employee snuck four chips out of the lab and sold them on the mean streets. One was sold to a producer of blackmarket XBDs. The other three chips are in unknown hands. A fixer named Abe hires the characters. Zero the buyers. Return the chips.

Any questions?!

Mona
right-aligned image

Handle: Mona
Role: Solo

Appearance:
Mona on the first glance looks like a teenager with her slim and lithe body and with light-tattoos on her face that in the normal light are dark but in darkness tend to have pinkish-hue. Mona blue eyes have a slight unnatural tint to it. Her hairs present only on the head are platinum blonde. She usually supplements this with makeup, where pink color is preferred. Pink color is also often present in her clothes, that are tight fitting and slinky.

Mona has nimble and feminine grace in her moves of someone who is confident of her look and knows how to use it, sometimes even bordering indecent. That is a mask however, behind, which is a perceptive predator who always knows exits in the room, pay attention to details, and is ready to fight at the moment notice. There is usually an ironic grin in the corner of her lips, as if a challenge to everyone around.

Background:
Born as Alexandra Cross, Mona never knew her parents. From the records she obtained, her mother was a prostitute and her father was a street thug but later she found out that this was false as her father never existed and her mother claimed she had no recollection of giving birth. She died in an accident two days after Mona visited her. Mona was guessing that her mother simply sold her after birth to a Yakuza oyabun, a man called Yoshida, but with her mother’s death, it remained an unconfirmed suspicion.

At age of 10, Yoshida’s playbeing, Mona also began heavy martial artist training with Yakuza’s masters, being groomed for an assassin and a spy, an agent that later could be placed in corporations or elsewhere in the criminal underworld of Night City as she was white. Three years later, the Yakuza got involved in a war that caught them unprepared. Yoshida was killed and his mansion torched. Mona used the opportunity and, knowing all the passwords, wiped herself from Yoshida’s records before everything went down in flames, which ensured that Yakuza would lose track of her.

Having nowhere to go, Mona turned at the door one of Nick Castle, a man who was a mercenary that Yoshida used a lot and who had a crush on Mona. She explained everything and he helped her get a new identity as Mona Castle, his daughter. Being with Nick, also, meant traveling to Asia and South America on missions with his the mercenary group consisting of mostly ex-soldiers and soon, she became part of it. All was going well until the group was ambushed, Nick was killed and Mona was severely wounded.

With Nick’s death, the mercenary group decided to part ways with Mona, who was by now seventeen. She returned to Night City and started to work on the street as a hitwoman and a neo-ninja, a mercenary, a street soldier, and Trash Boxing martial artist, going simply by the name “Mona”. Two years in, she slowly makes her way up the ladder of the city.

Awesome, Cyberpunk and Stormy's back. I do have to warn you that I have no idea about how anything in this system works. I have some prior knowledge of the setting and played CP2077. This is just a character idea. Kind of a doozy.

Application
right-aligned image

Handle: The Augur
Role: Netrunner

Appearance: The Augur intentionally tries to keep his appearence a mystery. In some circles he's known only by his image, a triangle of three open eyes over a pyramid. It gets around, The Augur is known to call into radio shows and podcasts using his image and absolutely refuses to give any sort of clue as to his real identity or even appearence. On the internet or during his calls he uses the pronouns Them/They, but he has admitted that this is solely so that nobody knows what he actually looks like if it can be avoided. Let's be honest, what Night City residents that have heard of him think he's a paranoid crackpot conspiracy theorist, and that's sort of the vibe the symbol gives off now.

Those who have seen him in real life hopefully had no idea. A caucasian male with short hair, his fashion sense has been described as just barely this side of Rightwing Militia Member, though it doesn’t get much to get Augur to reveal that his politics are decidedly leftwing if anything. There's nothing special about how he moves except that unlike many of Night City's denizens he has a Purpose. That you can see if you now how to look. For a Netrunner he has surprisingly little chrome, but that's an intentional choice. Don't ask, he'll just go off on another rant...

Background: You've heard the story before. Family tries to scratch out a living but gets crushed under the heel of a Mega-Corporation, including some deaths in said family. His ID says his real name is Jon Marsh, guess which Mega-Corp it was and he'll tell you if that's true or not.

The Augur showed up on messageboards several years ago, claiming to live and be trained on an Anarchist Enclave just outside of Night City. This was probably a lie, but he was clearly practicing for something. Learning. Coding, Hacking - Liberating Information as he'd describe it. Datadumps would pop up on other sites after that, supposedly from the Augur. Little things at first but getting bigger over time. The calls into radio programs and podcasts too, starting small but getting bigger. To the residents of Night City and the Net that have heard of him he's usually just written off as a crackpot conspiracy theoriest - except investigating his claims usually proves that he's actually right at least to a degree.

-----

Okay, that was the hyped up version. The more direct and sensible version is that his name is Jon Marsh, and he's one of the teaming masses radicalized by the horrors of the corporate world run rampant. A paranoid survivalist, he decided to fight back using his coding skills and technical skills rather than a gun. Which isn't a common story, but it happens.

He is a believer in his cause, and he wants a world free of Government and Corporate Oppression. He is written off as a conspiracy theorist, but if you look into what he puts out he actually is usually at least partially right. He operates in Night City in part because he thinks its there he has the best chance of actually making a difference, and because he can make enough Euro-Dollars to build his dream home. Which is a survival bunker in the desert outside of Night City, granted.

To be honest, he comes off as more than a little crazy with the first impression. Just saying that if you dig a little bit you discover that he's not *as* crazy as he initially appears.

GleefulNihilism, yes I’m back. The system is not too hard from what I can tell. I have owned the book for about 10 years, but it collected dust as it was one of those games that no one wanted to play. Most of my knowledge of the setting comes from the book and 2077.

Definitely interested in this. I've got a couple of character ideas rattling around in my head. I'll try to flesh them out over the weekend and get something posted.

Also, ZERO experience with this system, but it sounds fantastic.

Always interested in Anything and everything cyberpunk. I’m more familiar with cyberpunk red than cyberpunk 2020 but they actually look pretty similar. I’ll get an app up for a Rockerboy (girl) soon.

Hello! New to RPGCrossing and this game, but I've been playing RPGs for 6 years now, both as a player and a DM, in person and PbP, etc. I have a passing familiarity with the cyberpunk setting, but I'd appreciate some input in terms of tying more specific pieces of the setting into my character (ex. stuff about specific corporations).

Application
right-aligned image

Handle: "Gale" (will decide last name later)
Role: Corporate

Appearance: Gale is a cocksure Asian-American woman in her early to mid-twenties, with short hair and a powerful air. She dresses smartly- business professional- and wears a pair of obsidian-black sunglasses all the time. There's probably some whispers about exactly why she does so- maybe some embarrassing cybernetics on her eye, or perhaps even an injury. But quite honestly, the real reason is that Gale likes how no-one can tell where she's looking. It keeps people on their toes. Helps to hide her reactions and disgust. When out on the streets, though, she wears more practical gear- a black leather jacket, running shoes, gloves, you know the drill. Plenty of places to carry a weapon (though to claim she wasn't strapped during working hours would be a lie). She also wears a face mask- a little light-up design that's more fun to play with than she cares to admit.

Background: Gale is the daughter of (insert name here), the owner of (insert corporation here), her position as a junior executive is a clear, if unsurprising case of nepotism. The corpo world is her element- she speaks with a buttery-smooth bravado and navigates meetings with a suave control of any situation. Beneath her collected air though, she seethes with an intense hatred for the institutions she's been blessed by. Every conversation, every step is in preparation to bring it all crumbling down. She collects information, including dirt on other companies. Some of it she sells and the rest she hoards, waiting for the day when she'll be on top. Then she'll be able to light the fuse, stand back, and watch empires burn.

Wishful thinking, maybe, but it's a goal. Something to latch onto and work towards in this bleak moral wasteland. Gale splits her time between the corporate sector and the streets, acting as the occasional fleece or doing odd jobs. Anything to get dirt on other companies or gain allies and trust. To ignore the constant flow of information that runs through the underbelly of the city would be like ignoring the other chambers of a heart, and Gale intends to get her fingers into the meat of it. Gale wouldn't consider herself a workaholic, but considering that she's climbing two separate systemic ladders simultaneously, she wouldn't exactly call her stress levels healthy either. But goals are what Gale uses to keep herself going, and if this is what is necessary to achieve her ends, so be it.

I have no idea how to make the image smaller oops

Application for Seraphine “Marat” Vidal
right-aligned image
Handle: Seraphine “Marat” Vidal

Role: Rockerboy (Writer and Activist)

Appearance:

To her parents, the corps, and most of the public, Seraphine is a polite, eloquent, and soft spoken young woman. Her lower class background combined with her upper class education have made her a model of hard work and humble origins, the sort of thing corps like to list on their testimonials page about welfare and outreach programs. To those that know her by her online handle of “Marat” however the image is almost entirely a 180. In her many articles, letters, and blog posts, she calls for active and brutal violence against corps and their employees, seeing anyone below a certain income level who supports the corps as class traitors. This is the real Seraphine, a cruel, calculating, vindictive, and revolutionary writer, content with nothing less than the complete and total destruction of the overclass.

Background:

As an only child, Seraphine was born in Paris to parents who were both low ranking members of the French Government. With only one child to provide for, her parents scrimped and saved every EB they could to ensure a better future for their daughter. That opportunity for a better future came when they had enough money and a few called in favors to send Seraphine to the prestigious University of Paris to earn a degree in marketing, with plans to join Arasaka as soon as she graduated. With a degree from such a school and a job in the largest megacorp in France, she could provide for her parents and her own family when she was ready. It seemed a perfect plan, and she was excited to go, until she learned of just how staggering the cost of tuition was.

While her parents assured her they had enough to cover it, and she excelled in her classes, she found herself drawn to the multitude of activist groups that preached about the inequality of the system and how it privileged the rich few over the poor many. Being young and lower class, Seraphine was a prime target for recruitment by agitators and revolutionaries. She began associating with several different activist groups dedicated to several different causes, ranging from simple reforms such as bridging the wealth gap to extremes like toppling corporate control over the masses and rebelling against the influence that the EEC had over the French population.

Meeting in small book stores and coffee shops, she and her activist friends planned all manner of protests, demonstrations, movements, obstructions and anything else they could think of to spread their message and disrupt the upper classes. She always wore a mask to protect her identity and thus, her family from arrests and reprisals. After years of work though, and nothing to show for it, she began to think of other ways she might achieve her activist goals. By now in her third year of college, Seraphine found she could turn everything she had learned from marketing against the corporate masters that were teaching her. She began writing a bi weekly journal, posted anonymously on the Data Pool. Using all of the eloquence and marketing skills she had learned at university, along with her own experiences growing up poor, she marketed revolution to anyone and everyone who would listen. Being enamored with French history, she adopted the online handle “Marat”, after the French revolution writer, and made several comparisons to the situation France was in now to the one it was in prior to the revolution.

While initially her calls to actions were ones of peaceful protest and demonstrations, the complete lack of effectiveness of these actions caused her to adopt a more radical approach, and like her handles namesake, her journal articles began calling for acts of violence. While she lost a great deal of online followers, the ones who remained were as fanatical as she was, and she began naming specific people and places, doxing the details of government and corporate officials who she felt were most responsible for the system that kept her family in poverty while elevating themselves to the heights of the tallest skyscrapers. Firebombings, assaults, and even a few kidnappings were just some of the crimes committed by herself and her followers. Unfortunately some were caught in the act, and while they never outed her or her blog, the rhetoric they spouted to the Arasakas corporate police forces was enough for them to find patterns.

At this point Seraphine had graduated and with corporate security on her trail she hastily left the country, telling her parents she had taken a job with Arasaka in their Night City office. Couchsurfing with her fans and laying low for a while, Marat is now once again ready to take her rhetoric to the streets and data pools of Night City.

Interested in playing.

Played CP 2020 with my TT group, late 90s, early 2Ks. Though we never picked up the lingo. I'll post an application later tonight sometime this week.

@Stormhammer I know making a character sheet would probably be premature but do you have any idea of the character point generation method you would use?

Posting Interest. I have no idea what I would apply with, and have no experience with this system, and have only a little experience with Cyberpunk in general.

Do you have any tips, and would my lack of experience be a disqualifier?

This might be a quick reference: https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Cyberpunk_2020

But I guess as long as themes like Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell (NOT the live action movei), Akira, Gibson's books are something that you have interest in or had contact with - you should be fine.

I have the Core Sourcebook, as well as have some knowledge of common settings, such as Blade Runner (I especially enjoy the newer one).

I'm kinda stuck between two concepts: one being a Solo and the other being a Fixer...

If you are not familiar with CP2020 all that much - go Solo.
I think Fixer is one of the types that can be played to its full potential if you have good knowledge of the system. Otherwise it always feels lacking. But that's just my opinion from my experience.
