Phoenix and Piquets Flight or Fight

Datestamp
Date:29th August 3028Time:18:40
Location:North Side of the Ankra Trench, Eastern Forest, Southern Continent
Planet:Liao III
System:Liao System
State:Capellan Confederation

As Hanse Davion gave his wedding speech on Terra and announced the invasion of the Capellan Confederation, Federated Suns jump ships were already appearing in many pirate jump points of the Capellan Confederation. For the spiritual capitol of the Confederation, the third planet of the Liao system, home of the Liao household, their first awareness was the loss of signal traffic from their jump point station. The planetary invasion hit the atmosphere only 2 days later on the night of the 23rd August.

For the few survivors of Vincent's Commandos, the last 5 days had been a whirlwind. What began as an operation to harass the advancing enemy columns, slow them down, target their weaker support and force them to either commit reinforcements too early or re-direct assault forces. It hadn't started well, the teeth of the fox had snapped shut on their prey, the Proud Commandos lost an entire company to an aerospace attack on one of their dropships. But the operation for the Screaming Falcons company was being effective, to their peril. The Blue Star Irregulars, 1894th Light Horse Regiment had sent a reinforced company into the mountains to flush them out with a full 3 flights of Aero support. It had taken 3 days before the Falcon's were reduced to a 1/3rd of their compliment and forced to abandon the Talon Mountains upon losing contact with their HQ.

Leading the newly forged Phoenix Lance across the savannah was Sub Commander Kam Lung Tang as they sort refuge in the Eastern Forest, knowing that the Southern Continent would not be held and orders were to fall back to the greater concentration of forces and defensive positions on the Northern Continent.

Sub Commander Lung Tang proved to be an inspirational leader with a knack of just getting away with it, however he was convinced his luck had run out when the Phoenix Lance got trapped in a long ravine, known as the Ankra Trench, being slow roasted by a forest fire set light by ruthless BSI hunters. Now with desperation in his mind the Commander lead his lance out of the trench to the realisation that they were no longer alone and what was more, their chance encounter with Archer's Piquets may prove sufficient to drive off the hunters.

Location:250m (40 degrees) NE of North side exit from Ankra Trench

Raven Cockpit
Kam analysed the information he had on his Tracking HUD allowing time for Phoenix Lance to get into position. Their magscan fingerprints identified them approaching the formation he had ordered. According to the data this Captain archer had given, the Piquets armour were a further 2 km at 75 degrees (NNE). As long as his jamming works, they should be able to get within magscan range in approx 2 minutes. They may catch the hunters before then. Assuming the hunters will try to be within 500m South. They could be anywhere from 1.7 - 2.2 km at 80 - 90 degrees.

Glancing back at his lance formation Kam saw they were about in position so he gave the order to move out on an 85 degree direction at 40kph keeping the lance within 100m of each other to reduce the chance of being identified before his jamming was effective.

While the fire was no longer raging at this edge, all the light foliage having been burnt away. The trunks of the larger trees were still smouldering and threatening to catch where the rain didn't reach. Glowing silhouettes of trees gave away the position of trunks in the dark. With a thermal view they were still a few hundred degrees and the mechs temperature was steadily climbing, forcing the pilots to constantly adjust setting, redirect coolant and override safeties. In the cockpits, it was sweltering, if it weren't for the coolant vests, everyone of them would have passed out long ago to permit themselves to be slow roasted.

For any who saw them with the flicker of flame behind them, they truly were Phoenix rising.

For Archer's Piquets it had started as a training mission, but when the invasion was imminent they received their orders to rescue a Colonel and escort him to military command. It turned out they weren't the only ones after the Colonel. After a running battle with an armoured company from Hsien's Hotheads, the Piquets and Colonel's family and other civvies made their escape through an extensive layout of mines with the able support of the incumbent miner Magnus Gustaveson.

It was days before the Piquets saw the daylight again and when they did it was to realise they were still on the run, but from a Light Horse regiment, the 1894th. For Captain Archer and his band, they had to leave injured comrades behind so that they could move quickly, else their escape would be that much harder and trek to the Northern Continent. Captain Archer had chosen to split his force so that his more agile and able mechs may bring with them valuable intel on the size and capabilities of the invading force. The two squads single purpose now was to re-unite while avoiding capture.

Piquet's Recon
 Piquet's Recon
Location:500m (345 degrees) NNW of the beginning of the Ankra Trench
Visibility:25m

As the Piquets recon units move forward towards the heat blur, smoke from the smouldering foliage and steam from the falling rain as it evaporates enveloping them as they move. Their own visibility drops to less than 30m and only their tracking of each others known magscan fingerprints provides any reference point. The move also obscures targeting of the circling H7s before they had completed their manoeuvre.

There was a cacophony of sounds being picked up on the mechs external audio sensors, the crackle of the fire struggling to stay alive jnder the downpour of torrential rain, itself pattering relentlessly against what little tree canopy remained and splashing up off the muddy ground. Roaring through the trees was a howling wind, whipped up by the storm and being sucked in to fuel the fire. But beyond it all was the sporadic whoosh, crack and kaboom of combat. Not a large fight and not intense. Sounding more measured and tactical.

Phoenix Hawk Cockpit
Jonas slows down as the smoke and steam starts to interfere with his targeting, steadying his aim as the helicopters near completion of their turn:

Tracking Target: Warrior H7 #1 & #2

Jonas concentrates cursing the extended range: It will at least make them think twice. Seeing the smoke thicken he fires off a full volley from his Harmon energy arrays, a combination of heavy and two mid classed lasers. As the smoke masks his vision there was no tell tale flash of any impact.

The heat from those Harmons was crippling, Jonas worked furiously trying to keep his Hawk from shutting down the core. He could feel the myomer bundles seizing up slightly making movement sluggish.

Spider Cockpit
Hank running ahead allowing his targeting system to track the H7s disappears into the smoke before realising the heat of the steam would block his lock on.

They were still too far as I said. I must give distracting fire though. Turning his Spider's torso as he comes slows to a halt, firing up is always more challenging for the torso mounted Aberdovey Mk IIIs, Hank fires the first based on an audio signal his TA1240 detects even before it calculates the probable range. Hesitating a moment to check the target an eddy passes through the smoke, a hand of fate parting the smoke and steam just enough for Hank to catch a flicker of movement from the rotors, wham a knowing grin creases Hanks face knowing even as the smoke closes off his vision that it was a one in a million shot. I hope the target cam caught that because no one will believe it.

Cockpit of Miner
Magnus walks the 60 ton industrial machine towards the fire, passing the Spider as it turned and fired up into thecloud of smoke, looking for a suitable spot with his back to a tree to update his geo survey of this area. Entering further into the smoke to hide from the H7s.

Magnus peers through his reinforced canopy; This visibility is ridiculous. The smoke swirls about as the rain pours down adding to the fuelling more smoke and steam. Magnus turns his attention to the external temperature rising as the scan pulls in and analyses all the available data.

The targeting system combines data from his mag and seismics sensors overlaying a growing map from his geo suite, it was still going to be another few minutes to get al the geo physical data if he could hold still. Magnus could see the expected signs of extensive underground fissures and pockets. Possibly even some gas pockets which could easily vent and ignite if persuaded.

Hank gives out a whoop of triumph as his shot scores home. But still, one of the choppers was getting away. Jonas had let his escape. Typical. Your superior gives you an impossible task, keeps the easy task for himself, and then blunders that too.

Well, there was no point in remaining in the fire now. The had their positions now. Besides, his mech didn't need the extra heat. Hank moves to get some distance from the flames.

Kam Lung Tang - Phoenix 1 of Phoenix LanceKam could feel the sweat dripping in streams from under his neurohelmet, but his focus had become razor sharp. It was no doubt due to this glimmer of hope that they could finally stop running for a moment and mount an effective counter-attack. It was demeaning to be running for so long, to survive for as long as they had, and to conserve their resources as they did. They were in machines meant for war, and finally he felt as though the fire that burned within would be brighter than what was without. His black-painted Raven was likely burnt and singed in spots, but given the color scheme no one would be able to notice from a distance. All he hoped was that his enemies would see his lance as the shadow of death coming for their souls.

"Phoenix Lance, we are en route to Archer’s Piquets. We’re going to continue on our current trajectory, then upturn North to take us between the last known coordinates of Archer and the Armour assets. I plan on sneaking up to whatever is engaging them, and light them up so we can leave them to burn in our fiery wake. It’s our turn to set a trap. Let’s go!"

Kam was confident with the comms at this point. He knew he could block their signal and jam signals the enemy may be using. It felt as though everything had been leading up to this moment. All the close calls, all the evading, all the hiding. It was to strike back now. They thought they could catch them in the plains. They were wrong. They thought they could send VTOLs to catch them. They were wrong. They thought they could send a spec-ops unit to flush them out of the forest. They were wrong. They thought an aerial bombardment of flame and destruction would trap and cook them in the ravine. They. Were. Wrong. Now it was time for them to see how wrong they were. Now they would see that it wasn't just a lowly Raven mech they sought to snuff out and eliminate. They would know the name Kam Lung Tang, and they would come to fear it.

Kam looked over his nav map and started to consider how the enemy would act... and how best to cut them.

Phoenix Lance

Location:

Phoenix Lance moved with dual purpose, getting further from the inferno and if the Sub Commander Lung Tang's calculations were correct their aim was to surprise the hostile hunters from their 6.

Raven Cockpit

Coordinates set and relayed using the last set from Captain Archer, Kam turned his attention to his ECM, an element of nagging doubt over the quality. Due to its experimental nature it was rather unpredictable at times. Setting to jam all communication frequencies except for his own lance, the X-1 kicked into operation with a familiar dull whine from the additional boxes of electronics squeezed into any available space in and around his cockpit. With that set, he focused on the active scan countermeasures which he set on full, again filtering out his own lance's known signatures. With a deep breath he initiated the routine and monitored his display carefully, ready to disengage the moment the power started to fluctuate.

Sub Commander Maraketch manoeuvred his 25 ton mech steadily through the smoking wasteland, stepping carefully to avoid fallen trees. The Commando lead the lance North-East until they reached the way point Sub commander Lung Tang had designated. The external audio picks ups relayed the torrential pattering of rain against the heavy tree canopy above, the hiss of smouldering embers, the crunch of the metal behemoths trudging across the ash covered ground. Then the distant percussion of explosions. Missile volleys, large ones, in excess of 40 or 50 rounds.

"Phoenix 2: My targeting can't get a lock on the direction of that missile fire. The sound is too diffused. "

By this point the Commando had turned North. All of the Phoenix pilots could see that they had less than a kilometre until they reached the coordinates given for the armour units. Sub Commander Maraketch had slowed his Commando down, allowing the rest of the lance to catch up.

Raven Cockpit
Kam could see Sofian's Commando briefly for the first time since out of the trench, it was covered in grey ash over blackened metal. No insignia was visible. With satisfaction he realised they must all look like ghosts.

Then a flicker of blue light caught his eye to the East, more than a flicker, it was a distant flash which momentarily lit up the smoke like a flash of lightning. Less than a second later came the unmistakable sound of arcing energy followed by the muffled thud, wabooom of something pushed beyond its limits and surrendering to the power of a projected particle beam.

A new voice comes over the comm, even with the clipped electronic voice, the sense of urgency is clear; "Thunder Call to all friendlies, I can't pull back, Thunder Riff has gone, and Thunder Beat is hell bent of vengeance, any supporting fire will help. Targets identified, a Grif, and at least one Hawk, maybe more. Can't tell with all this smoke. I reckon at least two more units, plenty of lasers. Our ammunition is about spent, after that we've got nothing but ramming speed." With that a new set of coordinates comes through:

C-Apple Churchill HUD
Target Coordinates #Thunder Call Direction: 015
Target Coordinates #Thunder Call Distance: 425m
Target Coordinates #Thunder Beat Direction: 064
Target Coordinates #Thunder Beat Distance: 350m
Target Coordinates #Hunter 1 Griffin Direction: 045
Target Coordinates #Hunter 1 Griffin Distance: 180m
Target Coordinates #Hunter 2 Phoenix Hawk Direction: 035
Target Coordinates #Hunter 2 Phoenix Hawk Distance: 260m

To Kam, seeing the coordinates light up his HUD instantly lead him to link the blue flash with the Griffin's PPC. Unfortunately the reputation of the Griffin mech was that of a stalwart of versatility and survivability. Through thick and thin they kept going. Their Particle Projection Canon packed enough firepower to remove limbs in a single hit from all but the Phoenix Hawk in his lance. But at least the pilot would be at a disadvantage, the entire hunter lance could well be in range of his jamming and may well not even be aware of the approach of a second lance.

The sound of rending metal dissipates in the smoke as one of the H7 Warriors tears apart as it hits the tree canopy. With the flashes of light and distortion of sound, the location of the remaining helicopter is lost.

Cockpit of Miner

Magnus concentrated on the data coming in from his geological system, it had now provided more detail about the unidentified target, displacing in the region of 40 tons and being light on its feet. As he was watching it disappeared from the sensors response as a second, faint and fluctuating pattern approached the same location. This second pattern Magnus recognised as he'd seen their pattern frequently enough in the last few days, if was a hover vehicle, likely one of the Saracen's.

As the geo physics data returned and populated his HUD, Magnus could see a series of rifts in the rockbed which would be ripe for exploiting if they were mining, but also meant represented weak points where a concentrated explosion could collapse a large section. Some of these sections were as large as 20m in length and 3 or 4m wide.

Spider Cockpit

Satisfied with his shot and that the other H7 would be unlikely to press an attack, Hank returned his focus to the data being fed by Magnus' scans, there was no point running into combat only to fall down a sinkhole. he thought as he power his Spider through the desolate woodland. Aware of the new targets identified by Magnus, Hank kept alert while listing off 40 ton mechs with jumps.

Query Output
Assassin - Jump 150 - 210m - LRMs, SRMs and Medium laser
Clint - Jump 210m - AC/5 and Medium lasers
Vulcan - Jump 180m - Medium lasers and flamer
Whitworth - Jump 120m - Either LRMs or SRMs and Medium lasers

As always, Hank knew his only advantage was manoeuvrability and in the state he was in, an Assassin could match him.

Phoenix Hawk Cockpit

Jonas changed his focus to the data coming in from his own sensors and the feed from Magnus. Looked like they may have caught up with the Captain. He opened the comm channel up to listen, taking a moment to manually tweak the control and sure enough there was the signature of Thunder Beat and then an urgent message from Thunder Call: "Thunder Call to all friendlies, I can't pull back, Thunder Riff has gone, and Thunder Beat is hell bent of vengeance, any supporting fire will help. Targets identified, a Grif, and at least one Hawk, maybe more. Can't tell with all this smoke. I reckon at least two more units, plenty of lasers. Our ammunition is about spent, after that we've got nothing but ramming speed." With that a new set of coordinates comes through to add to the data from Magnus:

Tek Tru-Trak HUD

Unidentified seismic resonance #3 Distance: 700m
Unidentified seismic resonance #3 Contact lost
Hover seismic resonance #4 Direction: 355 degrees (N)
Hover seismic resonance #4 Distance: 710m

As Jonas contemplates the evolving battlefield and a response to Thunder Call a new movement flickers briefly on his screen, only for an instant picked out against the background IR of scorched covered trees, a small shadow in the crook of a tree, now nothing to be seen. Only picked out as he switched between sensor settings. Realisation is quick in coming, infantry in IR surpressing suits, great in all but these conditions. He highlights the contact on his HUD and shares it to his lance.

Infantry #1 Direction: 045 degrees (NE)
Infantry #1 Distance: 250m

Hank is a little unsure of the prospect of the three of them taking on a lance of medium mechs. "Uh guys? Suggest we evade these fellows..." Then the enemy infantry popped up, only a few hundred meters away. Hank swivels to get a look, zooming in on his targeting. Had they been spotted? It'd probably be best to eliminate the infantry before they could report in on their position.

Kam Lung Tang - Phoenix 1 of Phoenix LanceKam looked through his set of information that was feeding into his Churchill HUD and an unbidden grin formed on his lips. He queued up his lance, confident in their element of surprise nearly upon them.

"Phoenix Lance, Hunter #1 is the Griffin and our first target. Focus fire on Hunter #1, we need to bring it down fast and hard. Once it’s confirmed down, move onto Hunter #2. Maneuver to bring ourselves forward as a second front to take some of the heat off Thunder Lance. I intend for us to chalk up some kills today. Bring the pain."

With that Kam brought up the weapons system for his Raven and began to bring it to bear towards the Griffin, keeping an eye on his radar and the X-1 system for any disruption. He was eager to make the hunters the hunted this day. When all was prepared, he patched in a direct line to Thunder Call, keeping it as short and brief as possible, "Phoenix burning from the ashes..." and begins his firing sequence towards the Griffin.

Hearing the desperation in Thunder Call's voice, Jonas was tempted to play cavalry and foolishly charge in mount some kind of rescue. But against what might be a full mech lance? Even if his, Hank's, and Magnus's machines were in pristine condition and not on the verge of overheating, those were poor odds. Still, they had to do something. He made his decision.

"We can't let them down like that Hank. We might only need to buy them a minute or two, the Captain is somewhere nearby."

Jonas switched to the unit channel. "Thunder Call, this is Piquet Recon on your bearing 130, range 850 meters. We'll try to draw them off."

He switched back to the channel he shared with Magnus and Hank. "You with me Hank? Just harass and pull back. Magnus, I don't know if you have the speed for this. Maybe you can find a spot to keep out of sight and we can try to draw one of them past you. Give you a chance to rip em up with that mining gear."

Infantry? Wish I had a flamer or machineguns. Magnus was well aware that even infantry could pose a threat to more combat ready mechs than his miner. A few shoulder launched SRMs wouldn't do his poor Rocky any good at all. At the same time however, he had no desire to capture memories of slashing through human bodies with the industrial saw and the traumatic damage it could do. Hoversleds? Right up his alley if he could get close enough. He tried to keep his voice flat and even as he spoke quietly into comms. Rocky here. We can limit approaches to anything without jump jets if you heavier weapons will fire at the following coordinates. Fire at the ground I mean.

As he spoke, the civilian mech pilot sent a series of directions to try and separate the enemy by it's mobility. Jumpers could ignore the obstacles. Hovers could ignore SOME of the obstacles. Anything with less lift than either of the above though would be forced to split up and circle the rifts he hoped a few judicious shots could open.

Phoenix Lance
 Phoenix Lance
Location:2800m (60 degrees) NNE of North side exit from Ankra Trench

As Phoenix Lance manoeuvred through the ashes, searching for the antagonists who were hounding their new found allies. The coordinates being fed to them showed Subcommander Maraketch that they should be close, very close. His commander wanted to focus on the Griffin, expected to be the heaviest of their opponents. The focused firepower from all of Phoenix Lance was more than a match for a Griffin, even the addition of a Phoenix Hawk wouldn't tip the balance. But it wouldn't be easy, for the Raven and his Commando could easily lose limbs or worse from just a single shot. Sofian had slowed his approach, giving time for the remainder of Phoenix Lance to catch up. His own sensors were on passive, he would need to keep alert.

Raven Cockpit

As Kam's Raven closed in on the cautious Commando of his second, he could make out the mech's ghostly shadow in the steam and smoke, blending in with the surrounding charred remains of the forest. The blackened right side of the 25 ton machine looking gaunt and insignificant overshadowed by a 4 meter wide ancient tree, both forms sharing the same burnt and ash covered colour scheme, differing only in their lines and geometry.

Just then his enhanced active sensor picked up what none of the others would, movement in the smoke ahead of them.

Even as his sensors data was fed through to his lance, Kam knew that he was now within the short range of the Griffin's big gun, its Particle Projection Canon, whose field inhibitors prevented effective targeting within 90 meters as a safety mechanism to mitigate the risk of particle feedback. The pilot could disable this as many did. But that took an extra second and Kam could just make out the shape of the 55 ton hunter emerging into view. A look to his right confirmed that the two Lance Corporals were still not quite in view, but close.

Keeping his mech stationary, a quick burst on the comm to his lance instructing a fast advance 60m to both Phoenix 3 & 4, then entire lance open fire. He knew it was a risk to hold fire for that extra 3 seconds it would take to manoeuvre.

The Griffin was scanning, turning his head and torso, his large handheld barrel maintaining target to its North towards the Thunder lance. As Kam's HUD idnetified LC Miles-Henderson and LC Kavajk closing he saw the hunters head suddenly move an extra 30 degrees with purpose to stare right at his Raven. "Fire"Kam commanded even as he punched the fire on his own Ceres Arms lasers. Flashes of light pierced the din from both sides of him, lighting up the target with searing bursts, burning away the smoke and paint. Kam's last impression as his vision was obscured by the fire was of the heavier mech's particle gun swinging round and then flashes of blue, red and yellow light obscured his vision.

Allowing his training to take control, Kam was already moving the Raven, knowing to never remain stationary in a firefight. The impact on the 35 ton mech by the full force of the Griffin's Particle Beam sent shudders through Kam as his HUD and electronics momentarily flickered, replaced by the blue glow of the particle beam flash seemingly right in the screen. For a moment Kam felt it must be the end, but if it had been the cockpit, he wouldn't have even known.

Kam hadn't needed to read the end of the report, he could feel the temperature rise immediately. The Raven staggered as he tried to manoeuvre, heat sinks desperately trying to dissipate the heat. Kam needed a tree and hope the Griffin had taken a kicking.

Piquet's Recon
 Piquet's Recon
Location:750m (345 degrees) NNW of the beginning of the Ankra Trench
Visibility:75m

With the realisation of combat ahead of the Piquet's Recon lance and the knowledge that it included at least one medium class mech which they anticipated being part of a full lance. None of the pilots were feeling confident at the odds, the identification of infantry off to the side always held an edge of fear to mech pilots, while infantry were not a significant threat as most were easily dispatched. If the infantry was trained in anti-mech warfare then they could pose a significant threat. What was worst is a pilot never knew until they were engaged.

Jonas gave the order to provide a rapid strike and retreat aimed at drawing fire from the pinned Thunder armoured lance, hoping to give time for the Captain Archer and the rest of the Piquets to be able to wade it. They all knew it was a risk, but this is what they were paid for and it was their brothers and sisters in arms in those tin cans.

Spider Cockpit

Firing a quick blast through the smoke at the trees where Jonas had indicated infantry may be. Not confident that it would do anything but provide covering fire, Hank turned and accelerated to engage the mech hunting their Saracen's Thunder. His mouth dry, not just from the heat, but also the knowledge that a 40 ton mech would be a challenge,

He could see the referred coordinates for where is had last been and he knew the furthest any of the pissible mechs could jump was just over 200m. So moving his mech as fast as he could, keeping his eyes high for any tell tale of the enemies descent Hank ran 'to the rescue'. He knew his reaction would be the quickest and he could jump back the furthest. In this environment his worst enemy was the trees was evading. His body was on edge, the thrill and anxiety of running into the unknown is such a blatanty stupid way was what Spider pilots lived for. That and the reputation that once again they got away with it because of their agility and speed alone.

He could see that Jonas was moving up to support him and Magnus was cutting across as well. But frustratingly his own sensors weren't picking anything up apart from his comrades until a new signal dropped in literally right in his path.

Hank knew from his training that the Phoenix Hawk's Harmon Heavy laser out ranged his Aberdovey's, and where he was now was in the Harmon's sweet spot. Hank needed to close another 30 - 40m or gain some distance of 70 or more. The Hawk was just landing and there was no clear visibility. Any shot like this would still be a trusting in luck. Leaning forward and cutting towards one of the ancient trees, a distance he may be able to make by the time the Hawk's pilot could track him, should bring him into visible range and offer him cover from the tree, give him a chance to out jump the enemy after the shot.

The mud slipped under Whisker's footing as he accelerated, nearly losing his balance, but this was what he was born for. The HUD announced that Target #4 had landed, the range now 90m but he still couldn't see anything. But wait there was a swirl in the smoke, a tell tale from the Hawk's jumps. He was 20m from the cover he was aiming for, he lined up the run, twisted his torso and as his targeting system painted a wire frame round a shadow that was forming among the eddies, he locked on and fired. Both lasers scoring on the mark. Hank just couldn't tell if the mark was real or just shadow. The return laser blast seared towards him a fraction of a second later as he slammed into the tree, sending a shudder through the mech and nearly throwing him out of his harness.

Cockpit of Miner

Seeing Jonas' hurried identification of the infantry on their flank as he was giving the command to engage ahead of them, Magnus sent out his own guidance on key subterranean targets to hit with the aim of creating further obstacles to interfere with the infantry being able to advance on their flank or create any effective trap behind them as they advanced. Hank had already fired off a compulsive blast in that direction which Magnus was unable to tell if it would be effective.

The moment he had started to move, his HUD left the seismic targets as ghosts fading into nothing with the lack of a continued data feed. He could see the Phoenix Hawk's heavy laser turn to target an area he identified even as with a glimmer of hope in his eye, Magnus pushed Rocky forward and proceeded to cut part way through an ancient tree some 4m diameter and push it over so that its collapsed headed straight for the infantry. This would make them run he thought.

As the tree tipped past the point of no return, a flash in the direction of the infantry declared that he was under fire. Small arms rang off the Miner's armour, smashing into the windscreen with remarkable accuracy. A couple of shots managed to chip the plexi glass before the sound and movement of the tree deterred any further fire and forced the infantry to look to their own safety.

Seeing the HUD status as Magnus stepped the mining mech back, he breathed easy again, only then just realising he had been holding his breath while pushing the tree. Now he moved closer to Jonas' Hawk so he could watch his back.

Phoenix Hawk Cockpit

Moving forward at a controlled rate, Jonas brings his Harmon Heavy Laser round in a smooth motion towards the infantry he had spotted, changed his tactic and fire the Harmon Medium Lasers instead. The Heavy he re-aimed at coordinates provided by Magnus. The opportunity to create a more favourable defensive point was worth the heat. His powerful laser tore a deep tear into the ground which was closely followed by a deeper rumble and then a whole the size of two Demolisher tanks opened up, swallowing a younger tree and creating an obstacle any infantry would need jump packs to cross. He saw Magnus moving the large bulk of his mech in close to cut at the base of a tree to the South of this new precipice, it took Jonas a valuable second then he realised what the civvy pilot was up to. A nod of approval and all forgotten as he accelerated his Hawk to support their excitable scout when he ran back.

Staying close enough to keep Hank's Spider in sight through the smoke, or at at least the tell tale swirls depicting his passing, Jonas continued towards Saracen's Thunder, or what was left of them. Just need to take some heat off, buy them some time. Archer wouldn't be long.

The knowledge to Jonas that another Phoenix Hawk was more than a match for Hank's Spider urged him to get closer, but to target effectively he would need to nearly draw into hand to hand combat range. Flashes of fire, super focused laser burnt away smoke in trails showing the rapid fire of Hank's smaller weapons, his only weapons. As Jonas expected, this was returned with retribution from the Hawk's larger calibre weapon. From his position, Jonas was unable to tell if the shot had scored on the Spider or vice versa.

He steadied to take a good shot when the hunter approached. There was always an anxiety when facing the same mech that you fought. Jonas was feeling this now. The enemy had the same firepower, same speed, same strengths and knew your weaknesses. But they also represented a big bundle of spare parts which was sometimes more valuable than anything.

The time for planning was over. The time for post-combat briefing was not yet here. Thankfully. Hank found both activities boring to the extreme. Now was the time for fighting, but he certainly didn't intend to slug it out with the phoenix in a duel. Keeping his eye out for any opportunities, Hank begins making a retreat, hoping to lure the phoenix away from the rest of its lance into the waiting arms of Hank's comrades.

Jonas surged ahead once Hank started trading fire with the hostile contact, another phoenix hawk. He made his course north-northeast, trying to make the enemy mechwarrior turn to face him instead of Hank's much frailer spider. Ideally, the bogey would have to withdraw further northeast and father away from his lancemates to avoid letting Hank or Jonas get behind him. If they kept the pressure on, the other hawk pilot would have to call for help and that should give Thunder a breather.

He held off firing for now. Conditions being what they were and with his tracking system still not quite right, he'd just end up building more heat he wouldn't be able to dissipate to no benefit. Hopefully the opportunity for a clear shot would present itself. Then he'd risk it.

With the infantry momentarily neutralized, Magnus glanced back at his HUD to locate the enemy mechs and his new allies engaging them. The Pilots Jonas and Hank seemed to be concentrating on the enemy phoenix hawk. Between them they were probably more than a match for that foe. Unfortunately that left a number of variables that could mean the difference between success and a very messy loud and painful death. For about the four thousandth time since this whole odd adventure had started, Mags wished his Mech had at least a couple of lasers or cannons instead of industrial tools. But...once the cards were dealt you played out your hand as well as you could. At range he would be torn to pieces by any of the enemy mechs. That seemed to dictate that he closed the distance.

Locating the nearest nonfriendly, Magnus adjusted his course to intercept the enemy. After that it was just a matter of rushing to within jump range and then blasting his way through the air to come to grips with a much better armed foe.

Kam Lung Tang - Phoenix 1 of Phoenix LanceGritting his teeth, Kam began evasive maneuvers with his Raven. While he knew he wasn’t the best shot in the lance, he knew he was one of the best pilots. It was time to keep the Griffin occupied.

He was maneuvering Black Phoenix around the trees as best he could, angling to present his Left side more towards the Griffin, hoping to shield his rather damaged right as much as possible. When he did have to move towards his right, he tried to time it with heavier trees in a path to provide some more cover from the PPC.

"Phoenix 1 taken damage on right side, still standing. Bring that Griffin down!"

The lance commander patched in another direct line to Thunder Call, "Enemy engaged and distracted, bring the pain already!"

Kam was keeping an eye on his heat, waiting for it to go down a bit more before he fired off a shot, but if an opportunity presented itself, he’d take down that Griffin. With what attention he could spare, he kept his eyes on his ECM system, just waiting for an opportune moment to wreck havoc on their enemies system.
