Hank gives out a whoop of triumph as his shot scores home. But still, one of the choppers was getting away. Jonas had let his escape. Typical. Your superior gives you an impossible task, keeps the easy task for himself, and then blunders that too.
Well, there was no point in remaining in the fire now. The had their positions now. Besides, his mech didn't need the extra heat. Hank moves to get some distance from the flames.

Hank is a little unsure of the prospect of the three of them taking on a lance of medium mechs. "Uh guys? Suggest we evade these fellows..." Then the enemy infantry popped up, only a few hundred meters away. Hank swivels to get a look, zooming in on his targeting. Had they been spotted? It'd probably be best to eliminate the infantry before they could report in on their position.

Hearing the desperation in Thunder Call's voice, Jonas was tempted to play cavalry and foolishly charge in mount some kind of rescue. But against what might be a full mech lance? Even if his, Hank's, and Magnus's machines were in pristine condition and not on the verge of overheating, those were poor odds. Still, they had to do something. He made his decision.
"We can't let them down like that Hank. We might only need to buy them a minute or two, the Captain is somewhere nearby." Jonas switched to the unit channel. "Thunder Call, this is Piquet Recon on your bearing 130, range 850 meters. We'll try to draw them off." He switched back to the channel he shared with Magnus and Hank. "You with me Hank? Just harass and pull back. Magnus, I don't know if you have the speed for this. Maybe you can find a spot to keep out of sight and we can try to draw one of them past you. Give you a chance to rip em up with that mining gear." |

Infantry? Wish I had a flamer or machineguns. Magnus was well aware that even infantry could pose a threat to more combat ready mechs than his miner. A few shoulder launched SRMs wouldn't do his poor Rocky any good at all. At the same time however, he had no desire to capture memories of slashing through human bodies with the industrial saw and the traumatic damage it could do. Hoversleds? Right up his alley if he could get close enough. He tried to keep his voice flat and even as he spoke quietly into comms. Rocky here. We can limit approaches to anything without jump jets if you heavier weapons will fire at the following coordinates. Fire at the ground I mean.
As he spoke, the civilian mech pilot sent a series of directions to try and separate the enemy by it's mobility. Jumpers could ignore the obstacles. Hovers could ignore SOME of the obstacles. Anything with less lift than either of the above though would be forced to split up and circle the rifts he hoped a few judicious shots could open. Dice engineer:

The time for planning was over. The time for post-combat briefing was not yet here. Thankfully. Hank found both activities boring to the extreme. Now was the time for fighting, but he certainly didn't intend to slug it out with the phoenix in a duel. Keeping his eye out for any opportunities, Hank begins making a retreat, hoping to lure the phoenix away from the rest of its lance into the waiting arms of Hank's comrades.

Jonas surged ahead once Hank started trading fire with the hostile contact, another phoenix hawk. He made his course north-northeast, trying to make the enemy mechwarrior turn to face him instead of Hank's much frailer spider. Ideally, the bogey would have to withdraw further northeast and father away from his lancemates to avoid letting Hank or Jonas get behind him. If they kept the pressure on, the other hawk pilot would have to call for help and that should give Thunder a breather.
He held off firing for now. Conditions being what they were and with his tracking system still not quite right, he'd just end up building more heat he wouldn't be able to dissipate to no benefit. Hopefully the opportunity for a clear shot would present itself. Then he'd risk it. |

With the infantry momentarily neutralized, Magnus glanced back at his HUD to locate the enemy mechs and his new allies engaging them. The Pilots Jonas and Hank seemed to be concentrating on the enemy phoenix hawk. Between them they were probably more than a match for that foe. Unfortunately that left a number of variables that could mean the difference between success and a very messy loud and painful death. For about the four thousandth time since this whole odd adventure had started, Mags wished his Mech had at least a couple of lasers or cannons instead of industrial tools. But...once the cards were dealt you played out your hand as well as you could. At range he would be torn to pieces by any of the enemy mechs. That seemed to dictate that he closed the distance.
Locating the nearest nonfriendly, Magnus adjusted his course to intercept the enemy. After that it was just a matter of rushing to within jump range and then blasting his way through the air to come to grips with a much better armed foe.
