Bad Luck Valentina
Name: Francesca “Lucky” Valentina

Nation: Vodacce

Backgrounds: Capitano/Company Escapee

Starting Story: What Is Mine (Advantage: Rich)
Step 1: Take slave ship as her own.
Step 2: Find the Passionate Lover captained by her mutinous former first mate.
Step 3: Reclaim her ship and her fortune.

Arcana: Virtue (The Tower: Humble), Hubris (The Drowned Man: Doomed)

Physical Description: Francesca is one of impeccable poise and posture. Her 5’8” athletic frame speaks of a learned grace from years of training. Her long raven black hair is often wound in a tight bun secured with a sharpened hairpin or simply pulled back away from her face when she wears her trademark tricorne hat with veil hanging to obscure her beautiful face. Her jet black eyes staring into the Weave that connects all things together by Fate. A red lip-shaped birthmark peeks out on her neck from underneath her collar labeling her a Strege if the veil didn’t give it away already.

A black leather corset overlays her white linen blouse outlining some of her best feminine physical qualities. Her black leather boots came up to knee high over her white linen trousers. If one were to look at the bottoms of the heels, they would notice a pair of sharpened blades run along the length. A nasty surprise for any would be attacker if they thought they had her completely disarmed. A matching over coat with gold accenting the cuffs on the sleeves completed the look. Her cutlass had gold thread wrapped around the handle with a steel guard. A pistol rests inside the belt preloaded. Her movements are purposeful with no effort wasted or fancy flourishes.

Personality: Francesca was taught at a young age to learn proper etiquette and manners. She shows respect to those that have earned it or in a position that would be too hazardous for her not to show it. Her orders are crisp and specific with an air of confidence. She believes that small talk is one way to figure out a bit more of your potential opponent. She is a strong believer in fate and that everything happens for a reason good or bad. She knows that somethings she does bucks at the double standard of men and women in Vodacce. She walks the fine line between adhering to law and knowing too much for her position. Her pride can sometimes land her in hot water that she has to navigate out of especially with those who try to exercise what she feels is undeserved superiority over others.

Background: Francesca was left on the doorstep of La Passione in Pacatezze as a baby with the note, Please give her a chance at a better life. It was none other than the school’s Mistress, Desiderata, that found her and took her in. It became instantly clear to her why the child had been left to her when she saw the red birthmark on the baby’s neck. From then on, Francesca officially became her daughter. A nobleman who frequented La Passione had a wife who is a Strege. A deal was struck between Desiderata and the nobleman for his wife to train Francesca in the art of Sorte in return for free special treatment at La Passione.

It was hard for Francesca to listen to the hard isolation of being a Strege wife when comparing it to her life at La Passione where it was the women who had power over the men that flocked there to shower women with praises and pursue them with such reckless abandon. She also had to learn the social implications of being a Strege without a father or husband. Her blood did not have the strongest concentration of power which led some to believe her blood parents were probably members of the peasantry. Her abilities were focused primarily around pulling others toward her and slightly manipulating the good fortune of others.

Knowing that one day, Francesca would have to defend herself from the sometimes cruel world of men, Desiderata had her daughter train in the various physical and martial arts including the La Strade dueling style where she could use her natural grace and ability to pull others to make her opponents become off balance and hindered by the world around them. Francesca threw herself fully into her studies with a zeal of pride and determination to serve her mother the best way she knew how. After her training was complete, she was always at her mother’s side as a personal bodyguard. It did not take long for word of a Strege at La Passione to circulate among the nobles. Many men came to seek her hand in marriage or to wed one of their sons. Francesca was in an unusual situation being without a father who the suitors would have negotiated with instead and have the marriage arranged. Her mother simply stated to the men, I leave it to her to decide who she wants to marry. Of course all of them simply wanted to have her as an obedient wife with magic that could further their agendas. “Lucky” as she was often called was ambitious and driven with no plans to be any man’s puppet. She knew there were good men out there including her future husband. She just had to sift her way through the trash first.

Constant rebuffing of suitors started to bring the matter to the attention of the Princes, including Vestini. He knew that he needed to do something about the situation, but his wife who was also a Strege laid out an idea that could solve the problem. Vestini’s wife suggested that Francesca be allowed to work aboard a ship that provided supplies to the region. It would get her away from La Passione while also letting her explore the world to find a husband to end the constant string of suitors. Once Desiderata agreed to the plan, Vestini sighed in resignation and agreed to the arrangement.

Francesca was not happy to be essentially forced from her home in La Passione, but she did as her mother said. Life at sea was hard at first without her sisters at the Courtesan Academy to talk to while deterring, sometimes violently, the advances of men aboard the ship. She pulled her weight and eventually earned their respect. Her earnings for every trip were saved by her mother for what she called A special surprise gift. After three years, her mother revealed the surprise to be a brand new schooner-type ship christened La Passione Amante (The Passionate Lover).

Francesca was named captain who then got to choose her crew. Once a crew was hired, she set sail as a fast passenger vessel. Her experience at La Passione came in handy as she was able to make her passengers feel welcomed and well taken care of. Her first mate, Mario Vitelli, quickly became infatuated with his captain. His attempts to woo and seduce her were all dismissed as while she respected him as her first mate she had no romantic feelings towards him. Infatuation turned into angry obsession. He had to make her his wife or she would be made to suffer. Whispers began to circulate about the captain being an unlucky thing with her being both a woman and a Strege. Food would suddenly be found spoiled or lost. Ropes and rigging would snap at the faintest touch. Mario began to stoke the flames of mutiny over the very things he had personally caused to happen. Francesca was also at a loss as to what was happening and wondered whether it was her unknowing doing thinking Fate was trying to take its toll.

It was one night of frivolity at a tavern at port, when she and several of her most loyal members of the crew were drugged into passing out. They awoke the next morning tied up laying on the deck of an ATC slave ship at sea. La Passione Amante was alongside the ship bobbing up and down in the waves. Mario stood over her with an arrogant smile. He showed her a marriage certificate with both of their signatures on it. The former first mate now captain gave her one of two choices: join him as his first mate and dutiful wife or spend the rest of her life as a slave being ‘put in her place’. Her response was using her gift to pull him forward and land a swift kick in his groin before biting off his ear as he fell doubled over onto the deck next to her. Everyone laughed at the poor man who had been quickly taken down by a bound woman. With both his groin and pride wrecked, he kicked her in the head knocking her unconscious.

The next thing she remembers is her below deck with several other slaves including some of her old crew and others she didn’t know. Everything had been taken from her. Her life, her ship, and her wealth. No doubt her ‘husband’ took all of her earnings and claimed she had died at sea to claim the ship as rightfully his while also claiming to be a widower free to pursue other women. Her hatred knew no bounds. One day, she would take back what was hers and send the traitorous first mate down to meet the Devil Jonah.

Personal Goals: She wants to find a kind hearted man skilled with a blade to be her husband and have a family to settle down with.

Player Goals: I would like for my character to interact with the cultural and social norms of society in the different nations. Being a female duelist and Strege without a husband can ruffle a lot of feathers.

Contacts:
1) Mario Vitelli- former first mate and now captain of La Passione Amante. He drugged her into signing a marriage license and took her ship, wealth, and remainder of her crew while selling her off to the ATC.
2) Desiderata- Head Mistress at La Passione and her adoptive mother
3) Veronica- Strege who taught Francesca how to control her powers

Secret: She is a member of Sophia’s Daughter’s and had been using her ship to help smuggle Fate Witches and other Vodacce women escaping their husbands out of the country.

What's this? You want more Castillians? Here you go! No, no... I insist.

A Peculiar Sort of PriestName: Father Sebastian Xavier de Rabellino
Nation: Castille
Starting Story: 3-Step Story:
1) Dig up dirt on Ribera, enough to end his career in the Inquisition (and preferably, have him excommunicated from the Vaticine entirely)
2) Find evidence to clear Xavier's name.
3) Orchestrate Ribera's humiliating defeat. It isn't enough just to take evidence of misconduct to the authorities... Sebastian wants to turn Ribera's flaws against him, and use the archbishop's own pride as a weapon. His fall must be dramatic, public, and impossible to ignore.
(The 3rd and final step is completed when Ribera is either removed from the Vaticine clergy, or excommunicated entirely.)
One More Tomorrow
- Having been sold into slavery by his father's killer, Sebastian endeavors to forget his priestly vows just one more time while he gets his revenge...

~~~
Arcana:
Virtue -~ "Just follow the plan, friends, and we'll eat well tonight!" ~ Commanding (The Emperor): Activate to give a hero point to all other players in the scene.
Hubris - ~ "O Creator, make me holy... just wait until tomorrow..." ~Relentless (Coins for the Ferryman): Receive a hero point when you refuse to leave well enough alone, and it lands you into trouble.
~~~

Physical Description: A tall, handsome man, with dark brown hair, soft brown eyes, tanned skin, and a disarming smile. Sebastian is thin and well-manicured, with pristine fingernails and just the right amount of stubble. He keeps his wavy hair trimmed to shoulder length, and lets it hang freely, framing his features pleasantly.

As a member of the Vaticine clergy, Sebastian normally dresses in a black cassock... although present circumstances has left his quite damaged and dirty In addition, he keeps a pocket watch on a gold chain at all times, which he managed to smuggle on his person even while being kidnapped and sold into slavery. The watch no longer works, but Sebastian often spends long moments caressing or staring at its still face.

~~~
Personality: "O Creator, make me holy... just wait until tomorrow."
Sebastian's former personal motto would send shivers down his superiors' spines if he let it slip in front of them. While he has a genuine love for the church and its positive qualities, a general lack of personal willpower allows Sebastian to prioritize other interests above his own virtue. It is always for a good cause... but that is only an excuse to put off adhering to a strict code of morality.
But even with his flaws, Sebastian has a charitable heart. He is rarely swayed solely for personal gain, and will prioritize the needs of others before his own. His own flexibility with the rules of the Vaticine prevent him from becoming as prideful and condescending as some of the more powerful members can easily become. He dislikes direct confrontation, and places words - be them for debate or for manipulation - above the sword in any circumstance. He believes in hard work and perseverance, even if his definition of "work" may be skewed...
~~~

Background: Sebastan's father, Xavier, was a brilliant and gifted scholar, with a specialty in Vaticine theology. His office and expertise afforded him, his wife Catalina, Sebastian, and Sebastian's five younger brothers and sisters a comfortable life, during which Xavier spared no expense in his children's education.

When Sebastian was young, over a decade ago, Xavier was an extremely vocal opponent against the growing ruthlessness of the Inquisition, urging both the clergy and lay persons to return to a lifestyle of mercy and charity. He began to sway the hearts of many... which encouraged the ire of one Archishop Juan de Ribera. Ribera had been given considerable power over the Inquisition, and had taken a stance opposite of Xavier in order to increase his reach and influence. For years, the two were bitter rivals, until Ribera finally decided to deal with the theologian once and for all.

He had the Inquisition arrest Xavier, forged evidence of him attempting El Fuego Adentro. Ribera decried Xavier's appeals to mercy as nothing more than a plot to allow heretical magic back into Castille, and after shaming him and his family, publicly executed him.

At age fourteen, Sebastian had become the impromptu man of the household. His mother could not support the family, not after the family had become outcasts. With no other options, Sebastian abandoned his schooling, and took up whatever work he could find to keep his brothers and sisters in school in his place. It wasn't long until the long hours, backbreaking labor, and not enough coin to show for it began to wear thin. Even if Sebastian had the fortitude to endure, it still wasn't enough money... and so he began to bring his morals, one by one.

First it was cheating at cards and dice. Soon, it was pickpocketing... then horse-thieving. Eventually, he used his wits and cunning to grow into proper heists, breaking into jeweler's and clothiers for the rich and mighty in the middle of the night and cleaning out the wares. As time wore on, he grew bolder and bolder, and less restrained by his father's - and his own - moral compass. His mother wasn't an idiot, and intuited her son's moonlight activities at around pickpocketing, which brought her no end of anguish, which grew ever more severe the more ill-gotten money Sebastian brought home. Sebastian swore again and again that it would only be until his brothers and sisters finished university... if they got a decent education, it wouldn't matter their family name, they could at least be independent, and not suffer the fate of beggars.

Each day, before every theft, every job, Sebastian would pray, "O Creator, make me holy... just wait until tomorrow."

He kept good on his word. When his youngest sister entered university, he gave up crime, once and for all. He had enough saved away to even finish his siblings' as well as his own studies, and decided that he had to make up for lost time. After seminary school, Sebastian became a priest, and endeavored to live out his life how he and his father would have wanted, had fate been kinder.

...until he found him.

Ribera returned to the city, purchasing a grand manor fitting of a noble rather than a holy man, with the wealth he had accumulated by wielding the sword of the Inquisition against the guilty and innocent alike. Unable to resist the chance at revenge, Sebastian planned one last heist, contacted old friends from the bad old days, and set his sights on robbing Ribera blind of every. Last. Penny.

It would have worked. Sebastian spent months planning the job, making everything perfect. But he got cocky, and at the eleventh hour, he couldn't resist leaving behind a calling card... a clue, a final twist of the knife against the wretched archbishop. Sebastian wanted the bastard to know why he was being robbed... and left behind a copy of one of his father's books on the subject of mercy.

Sebastian had grossly underestimated Ribera's brilliance and persistence. It took Ribera over a year to find Sebastian, to uncover that he had changed his name to avoid association with Xavier, but like a dog Ribera never let his wrath die out. Wanting to be rid of the priest and his family once and for all, Ribera decided to keep his hands clean of Sebastian's death and provide the priest with a much quieter fate than his father. In the middle of the knight, Sebastian was called to the edge of the city to perform last rites on a man that was supposedly dying, where he was instead bound and blindfolded, and sold to a slave ship bound for Avalon, where Ribera hoped the public dislike of the Vaticine and her priests would give Sebastian a painful and miserable last few years of life.

~~~
Personal Goals: Return to Castille.
Do one last, last heist... without getting caught this time.
Publicly shame the archbishop. Sebastian hasn't killed yet, and he isn't about to start now, even against a man like Ribera.
Player Goals: I really want to put Sebastian in a position where has has to chose between killing Ribera or letting him go scott-free.
~~~

Contacts:
Archbishop Juan de Ribera - His father's killer and current enemy. Ribera will no doubt have spies report to him if Sebastian escapes the slave ship... it won't take long for him to send others.

Catalina de Rabellino - The widow of Xavier, and Sebastian's mother. Sebastian wonders how long it will take for her to give up any hope that he might return home alive...

Sebastian's siblings are, in order from oldest to youngest: Constantina; Carlos; Gaspar; Sancha, Yolanda

Bishop Alonso de Augustino - One of Sebastian's mentors at university. He had been friends with Sebastian's father, and helped arrange for Sebastian's entrance into seminary under a false name. Sebastian cannot think of how Ribera found his true identity, other than the possibility that Alonso betrayed him... or worse, perhaps Alonso was harmed trying to protect Sebastian.

Inquisitor Ines - One of Ribera's most trusted inquisitors. She was the one to arrest Xavier years ago, and she was the one who personally assured Sebastian's capture. She is merciless in her view of justice and righteousness.

Boss Olväld - A fence and a "guy who knows a guy" from Vestenmennavenjar. His lack of honesty has made him a pariah among his people, but so far from home, in the land of Castille, its rare to see other Vesten at all, much less any that know him. He is oddly loyal for a criminal, provided one can actually get on his good side. Even after Sebastian gave up his criminal ways, the two remained friends, and Olväld gathered the crew for Sebastian's final heist.

~~~
L'orphelin d'Auzat
Name: Francois Noel d'Auzat
Nation: Montaigne
Backgrounds: Epee Sanglante/Orphan
Starting Story: "I'll beat you at your own game." (Advantage: Learned Duelist -Aldana)
Step 1: Learn what Castillian academy teaches "sword dancing"
Step 2: Find someone who knows enough to teach him the basics.
Step 3: Beat Moreno in a duel.
Arcana: The Sun (Virtue: Glorious) (Hubris: Proud)
Physical Description: Francois Noel stands at 5'6" and does his best to camouflage his athletic frame. He doesn't look like anything impressive by Thean standards, and this suits him just fine. Anyone with a sliver of training would notice immediately that he was schooled in one of the dueling academies. His stance too straight to be at rest, his step always slightly off cadence, just in case he needs to move unexpectedly. His wavy dark auburn hair falls just bellow the shoulder and is usually tied with one of many brightly coloured ribbons. With his overall plain facial features, he never truly stands out. The one thing that always garners attention are his bright golden green eyes with which he never shies away from meeting the gaze of anyone with intent. Despite his best efforts, his regional accent still breaks through his careful attempts at sounding more refined then he his.
In a crowd, Francois Noel would only go unnoticed if it was a crowd of blind men. His favorite clothes are an almost gaudy center parted attire of bright Fushia and Forest Green embroidered cloth with silver fittings in the Montaigne style of fashion. He wears fine brown leather travelling boots that stand mid calf over either white or split coloured stockings. He prefers the more formal dress breeches, though with triple buckles, over the immensely popular un-gathered breeches that can be seen almost everywhere today. Along with the usual white shirt with ruffled sleeves he wears a 5 button waistcoat with a mirror match coat with large upturned cuffs. He never goes far without a uniquely embroidered matching cravat to complement his outfit or his reversible cloak. The one detail that betrays his fancy garb would be his utilitarian sword belt that has seen far better days. His matching rapier and dagger, while sporting ornate basket hilts and an unusual red colour, are also quite plain, being simple burnished steel.
Personality: Montaignois through and through, Francois Noel sometimes has some annoyingly elitist views of the world with Montaigne, of course, being the epitome of Thean civilization. He tends to be joyful and over-exuberant. He constantly quips and rarely lets anyone have the last word in. He tends to use humor and sarcasm when he becomes stressed which is more often than he would like. He looks out for himself before anything else, although he paradoxically is far too proud to ask for help and tends to go out of his way to help anyone left alone.
Background: Born just outside Charouse to Alexandre Duschenes and Charlotte Vigneault, Francois Noel soon fell on hard times. Alexandre only saw his son reach his 1st year before the call to fight in the war with Castille came and like too many others, he never came back. Broken hearted, Charlotte did her best to raise Francois Noel alone. Too often her boy would get into trouble and she feared he would one day either go off to war or die in the city streets. Illness caught poor Charlotte when her Francois Noel was 5 years old. For months she could barely leave their home until one day, she simply did not wake up.
Brought to an orphanage in the city, Francois soon fell in with city cons and pick pockets and became a street urchin like most orphans across Theah's large cities. This was his life for years, and a relatively good one, for what it was. Combing the streets for well-off travelers or merchants he would snatch their coin purse or steal small valuables and rush back to a hideout he and the other urchins shared in the markets' bowels.
One late summer, a man came through Charouse who seemed less important then he wanted people to believe, or so Francois Noel thought. When he brushed against the stranger and grabbed the man's coin, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his side. Francois Noel panicked when he saw a dagger ever so slightly piercing his skin. At the sight of a child holding his purse, the man bent the knee and took him by the shoulders. Impressed by his natural talent at moving, he introduced himself as Albert d'Auzat, an instructor at Mont De Vore under Riche La Barre. He invited Francois Noel to come back and study with him in Les Sommets Blancs. Francois was doubtful but soon found he wished to go when a man from court came and challenged Albert to a duel. Refusing outright Albert turned his back and began walking away. The courtier shouted and lunged at Albert. In a flash the courtier was bleeding and Albert was standing waiting for the authorities. When all was said and done, Albert was left alone and the courtier was arrested. Francois agreed to leave with Albert.
For the next 10 years Albert drilled into Francois Noel the finer points of dueling and general manners. Francois Noel was quickly nicknamed the Orphan of Auzat by the other students. One of them, Louis Robert, a few years older than Francois had also been orphaned by the war. They grew close and trained together constantly, always trying to outdo each other. With time Francois Noel became one of the best students of the De Vore style, so much so that soon enough, no student were brave enough to spar against him. This included Louis Robert, who in the meantime became one of the instructors of Mont De vore, a position Francois was never interested in. Albert, who had become both boys' de facto adoptive father felt an immense amount of pride for both of them. But it was clearly not enough for Francois who tried to emulate other schools when he saw someone fight in another style.
On a mid autumn evening, Albert received a letter stating he was to go to Charouse and meet with a noble as soon as possible. Louis Robert and Francois Noel were of differing opinions on the matter. Louis was adamant that Albert should honor the request and go immediately, Francois on the other hand was afraid something might happen to Albert while he was in Charouse. He had grown attached to the man that had made him who he was today, and remembered too keenly the loss of his mother still. Despite Francois' pleas, Albert left for Charouse the next day. Arguing with Louis Robert eventually led Francois to leave, hoping he could change Albert's mind or at least lend some help if anything arose. It was, sadly, already too late. When he caught up with Albert, the old instructor had been ambushed, shot from multiple locations. A single clue left behind, a scrap of paper with signatures of recognizable noble houses.
The loss hardened Francois Noel who believed the corrupt Charouse nobility were responsible for his mentors death. He spent the next few years moving from place to place training wherever he could, earning somewhat of a reputation. That reputation brought him the attention of La Loutre, Henry Rochefort, a master of the Valroux school. The two became friends and Rochefort began teaching Francois Noel. He taught Francois more then just fencing. Over their last year of training he introduced Francois to members of the Rilasciare, of which Francois quickly learned, Albert was a member. Here he learned what he needed to get vengeance on his adoptive fathers killer. Information on the signatures he had found some years before.
Finding a way to duel most of the names he knew, Francois Noel took his vengeance piece by piece. Until he reached La Motte and fought Auguste Ambroise the 2nd, son of Auguste Ambroise the 1st who had died in the war with Castille and Fabienne Marie de La Motte. The duel led to Francois striking a blow across Auguste's face, severely disfiguring the man, enough that within the month he had thrown himself off Les Falaises to his death. Fabienne had contacts in dark places and had arranged for a renowned duelist from Castille to kill Francois Noel.
After months of tracking down Francois the duelist, Estevan Moreno, found the Montaignois in Buche and quickly demanded a duel. Not knowing of Fabienne's plot to kill him, Francois accepted, thinking this would be a duel to first blood, where he might learn a thing of two about a Castillian school of dueling. And so he did, after only 2 passes, Francois realized his opponent would be too much for him and asked for a reprieve. None was given and Moreno attacked once more. Seeing this would not end well, Francois Noel fled. With what little coin he had he booked passage on an unsavory ship bound for the isles hoping the sea would be enough to deter the Castillian.
Personal Goals: Before his current ordeals, Francois Noel wished to learn as many styles of dueling as he could. With the goal of maybe, just maybe, bringing about a new way of fencing.
Player Goals: Would be interesting to get beaten a few times by people from the "lesser nations". Bit of humble pie can go a long way if its well rationed lol.
Contacts: Louis Robert de Buche, instructor at Mont De Vore, childhood friend
Henry "La Loutre" Rochefort, duelist of the Valroux Academy,, mentor, member of the Rilasciare.
Fabienne Marie de La Motte, vengeful heiress, wants Francois Noel dead for disfiguring her eldest son who later committed suicide.
Estevan Moreno, Castillian duelist of a school unknown to Francois, in the employ of Fabienne.
Secret: He is a member of the Rilasciare. Being from Montaigne, where L'Empereur's domination is now almost absolute, he often does not agree with members from other nations who don't believe violence is the right course. He stands on the "wrong" side of the schism within the secret society. He tries his utmost to make sure no one finds out he is able to use the art of Porte.
@HellsingsRaziel
Might I suggest the ÉPÉE SANGLANTE background from Nations of Theah volume 1 book that has a dueling style AND sorcery (Porte’) in the same background which is kinda cool. The dueling style is you give up all your raises at the beginning to be able to dodge anything including bullets. The style let’s you do that for yourself or somebody else in the scene. That combined with Porte which is really cool in itself might interest you.
More great apps, I am sure this is not going to be an easy selection. Great work so far.
@Hiruma
Had not seen that. It is pretty cool indeed. I wanted to focus on pure fencing though since there's already an Knight Errant in the applications, which combines sword and sorcery. I'll think it over though, would definitely be interesting.
Edit: Ok so yeah this actually rings truer with what I had in mind, just adds a little zing to the whole thing lol.
Made slight adjustments to my application, just enough to make the background switch.
Hoping to get a spot, cuz every game i've joined recently have either not gotten of the ground or are not rp centric enough for my taste and this looks like it'll be amazing.
Unfortunately my workload proved too much to get together a complete application for this, but best of luck! I think 2nd ed 7th Sea may actually play better in a PbP format than it does IRL, given its focus on narrative resolution, plus the setting is a blast.
