Might a PC spellcaster be working with the city in some way, or would it definitely be a case of "hide the magic or you'll hear the tromp of Templar boots?"

Leena
right-aligned image

Name: Leena
Race: Human
Class: Psion (Telepath)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Description: By human standard, Leena is beautiful. Her red hair and green eyes contrast against he pale skin, despite the ever present glare of the sun. She has a propensity for dark colors and often adorns her clothes with feathers. If she does carry a weapon, it is never more than her dagger.

Background: Leena had been one of the many faceless children living on the streets of Balic. Life was hard. Many of her friends were executed for stealing, sold into slavery, or killed for no reason at all. As she got older, she learned quickly that her appearance could help her survive. When she was about fifteen and her powers began to manifest, things became even easier.

Through sheer will, merchants gave her food, drink, clothes, and a place to sleep for the night. This progressed into her stealing even more valuable items. Life continued in this way for several years before she attempted to will a man to give her a pair of metal earnings. She woke in a strange place after having blacked out, only to fine out later that the man she had attempted to steal from was far stronger in the Way than her. She learned a harsh lesson that day, that she was not special.

The man she stole from gave her a choice. He was a high ranking officer in Balic's army. If she were willing to serve in the army as a telepath for 5 years, he would see to it that she was trained properly in the Way; or he would execute her on the spot for assaulting an officer.

She spent her time in the psionic academy and the army well, learning all she could. Now wielding a power far in excess to what she had known when she still stole in the streets just to survive, she now answered to no one but herself.

Always liked the Dark Sun setting but never got to play anything but one-shots - I'll throw a prospective PC into the ring. Having a hard time finding an appropriate portrait but will keep trying...

Name: Otok
Race: Pterran
Class: Druid
Alignment: Neutral Good

Description: A towering, scrawny, tawny-scaled pterran with a hunched posture and slender cranial fin, gazing out of deep-set glaring black eyes. Otok wears no clothing beyond chitin armor and various carrying straps and pouches. Cautious and reticent among strangers. The only ostentatious trait he has is his irregular adoptation of brightly coloured paint on his scales in changing patterns. He paints his erdlu companion in complementary patterns, when he can convince it to stay still long enough.

Background: As a teenager, shortly after taking the Druid life path, Otok accompanied his sister, a rather larger warrior with more auspicious prospects, and a small party from his village on a search for pterraxes. In the wilds near Kalidnay they tangled with a drunken patrol of soldiers from Celik, in a confused running fight that was interrupted by a patrol from Balic. At its conclusion, the Celik men were driven off, the other pterrans had fled, and Otok was a seriously-injured quasi-captive of the Balic patrol. He had saved several Balic soldiers and was more or less adopted by them during his convalescence.

Otok grew up to be a legionary from Balic, acting as a scout. Not having actually passed his test to be a fully-invested druid, Otok has made only a subdued use of his powers, which have been developing with the guidance of dreams and occasional visions he believes surely come from the Earth Mother. He misses his people and especially his sister, but feels indebted to the fellow legionaries of his unit, even though their term of service is now ended.

Lightscale Illu
Race: Pterran
Class: Rogue 3
Alignment: True Neutral

Description: Lightscale was born with partial albinism and his brilliant white scales would draw the eyes of all around him even if he was absent the commanding presence that emanates from him with almost palpable force. The young Pterran has taken great care to accentuate his appearance by dying his claws and teeth onyx black with the use of entirely too much ink to be entirely reasonable which has given him a surreal appearance more appropriate for a cave painting than a living being. Brilliant golden orbs sit in his angular face made all the more mesmerizing on moon filled nights when his skin and eyes seem to glow in the moonlight. Even among the Pterran his voice is considered deep which he attributes in no small part to his exceptionally large dorsal crest and barrel like chest. Unlike many, perhaps even most, of the common denizens of Athas Lightscale takes great pride in his cleanliness and will use some of his water ration in the dry season to create a sauna in his cart then use a well polished angled wooden stick to scrape away the dirt and silt gathered through the day.

Background: Standing at the front of the clutch Lighstcale looked upon their elder with the admiration and deference the woman deserved but he couldn't believe he had heard her right. "Elder Bronzetail are you certain this is what we must do? It goes against all of our teachings to act in such... base means." "I am Lighstcale, and I know. No one in your clutch has found their path. None. The clutch birthed after you have all found their paths. No matter what we do your deeper psionics do not unlock, no companion comes to you from the Earth Mother, none of you have even been able to get her to bless you with her power. This has happened in our past more times than the histories would have you believe but every time it meant the same thing and combined with the storms and the quaking of the Mother I am more certain than ever that I am right. You all will follow a different path, you will be paired and sent to the cities of the sorcerer-kings and you will do what you can to kill them for neither druid nor psion has been able to come close to slaying these foul beasts. How you do it is up to you and for the safety of your fellows you must remain apart unless in most desperate need but there can be no question what the Earth Mother needs of your clutch. The Earth Mother is dying and it is the sorcerer-kings and their pets that are killing her." The group stood in silence, the subtle changes in their expressions giving away several silent conversations going on among the closest of the clutch. Several messages filled his own mind but he ignored them, in this he could no more guide the group than he could blunt a hurricane with a leaf. When finally the leader spoke it was with a deep warmth and joy. "So we are not failures. We are to be the Mother's weapon to fight against an enemy that cannot be defeated in the light of day. I was so worried that I had steered us away from our Path's but instead we have been sat upon it from the start. Well no point in waiting, I shall gather supplies and head out come the morning." "You shall all have a Pterrax to get you to the border near the city you are going to but it must return after. I wish you children luck, you will need it."
__________________________________________________ __________
The heat of mid-day was blazing down on them but no one seemed to mind, there was a much more immediate problem coming for them and the scout report had everyone stirring. The Templar that had been attached to their unit hadn't yet spoken but it was clear the man was terrified. Finally he broke his silence. "We need to turn around and go back to the city. Get everyone ready to turn around." The man didn't even look at Lightscale despite the Pterran being the leader of the baggage train, instead he started packing. "Templar Eirik we cannot flee. We have three Kanks and the Mekillots and Inix won't be able to keep up or outpace the enemy." The Templar whipped around in sudden fury at the questioning of his order, his face red as a fire drake. "The enemy outnumbers us five to one. We flee and some of us will survive. You are the head of the baggage train so its your job to do as you are ordered now turn the beasts around and get moving!" "Sir we would need three day's lead on them to hope to get to town in time and we only have one. You heard the scout, they only have Kank light cavalry with them. All the riders are human and none seemed of a magical bent from what the scout could tell plus none have bows, just javelins. We have three Half-Giants and a dozen Muls, two Mekillots and six Inixs. They outnumber us but we outclass them in raw power. If we bury the Mekillots and Inixs we can ambush them when they charge in and crush them." "You would lecture me on tactics you filthy little lizard? I said turn around and that is exactly what you are going to do." "No it isn't Sir. If we flee you and the two others on Kanks will be the only ones to survive. We don't have enough water to go all the way back to the city and we can't outrun the bandits. Flee if you must but me and the baggage train are staying here and making sure King Andropinis's trade goods are not taken by common thugs." The Templar began moving toward Lightscale, his intent writ in fine detail across his now purple face, only to be intercepted by a Half-Giant with a swatter as big as the Templar. "Lightscale right. We stay. Fight beside big lizards, crush bandits. You go back if you afraid. We no afraid." The Half-Giant's brother and sister nodded in agreement and with that it was clear where the rest of the camp stood. The Templar gathered his toadies and left, taking with him extra food and water as there was nothing Lightscale could do about that short of killing the man, while the rest piled sand on top of their heretofore docile cart pullers. The wagons themselves were pulled into a circle to provide protection to the soldiers inside and by the time the bandits came they were met with a sound and fury well beyond what they were expecting. Blood soaked the sands and the great lizards ate their fill.

The clinking of chains had become oddly comforting in the weeks since he and his unit had returned from Kurn. It was a reminder for him that he had made the right decision because at least he was alive to be imprisoned. They were finally bringing him to the temple for his judgment with Hobrik, the Half-Giant who had defended him, at his side. The two men marching through the street with metal chains hobbling them drew the attention of everyone they passed, for such resources to be expended on prisoners they must be the worst of the worst right? "This is the world of the Sorceror-Kings, speak against..." There was a minor pause as Lightscale prepared the next part of his message. "... their Templars, face the headsman no matter if you're right." The big Half-Giant gave a deep chested chuckle which drew the eye of the dozen Templar's escorting them and had them reaching for their weapons till it was clear Hobrik had no intention of doing anything. "If things go bad, can you break free?" Hobrik nodded his beg head as the two went through the great doors. The Templars had Hobrik sit upon the ground and took Lightscale to be judged first. Instead of going to the usual hearing room they escorted him to a templar's office and sat him in a simple yet comfortable chair. "Templar Evard will be here shortly. The door is the only exit from this room, don't try anything." The Templar unlocked his manacles and hobble before walking out the door with the rest of his entourage. A quick glance around confirmed the man's words, no windows, no cracks in the walls or floor to give hint of a hidden door, no hope for escape indeed. A few minutes into his simple musings over the fragility of life and a woman walked in with more smile lines than one would expect from a Templar. "Hello Lightscale, sorry for it taking so long to get to your hearing but I needed to gather some information. You and your compatriot were imprisoned for disobeying a direct order from a Templar who was in command of your unit. Doing so with an active conflict on the horizon gets you a death sentence and not a very fun one unless you like fueling a defiler's magic so why did you do it?" "Eirik was going to get us all killed. Well everyone but himself and the two other riders on Kanks. We couldn't have gotten away in time, fighting was our only hope of survival." "Which you did, as did most of the rest of your convoy. Out of the seventeen that remained you lost three." "Would have been less if we had the Templar and his men. None of the rest of us had any divine healing. We also lost a Mekilllot and an Inix because of his selfishness. Everyone could have made it out of there alive."

The Templar jotted down some notes with a bone quill before looking Lightscale in the eye. "As for King Andropinis's goods I see here that you were able to not only get them to the market but make a better profit than initially agreed upon despite having to use some of that money to pay for extra provisions. Is that right?" "That is correct Templar. After additional supplies were purchased our actual profit outpaced our predicted profit by nearly twenty percent." "And you did the haggling yourself?" "Yes M'am. That includes replacing the Mekillot and the Inix." More notes were written down before the Templar pulled out a small jar of dust to dry the ink on the page. "Well if I followed precedent I would give you over to the Defiler's to use you as a battery for one of their little projects, lucky for you I know Eirik and that boy is an incompetent stain on the underside of our organization. Not the first time he has abandoned his duty to protect his own skin and I doubt it will be the last unless someone higher up than me decides to do something about it. As for you and your friend you will be dismissed from the military, can't have soldiers who won't follow orders, but I won't have you killed. If Eirik ever tries to take action against you I will do what I can to keep you safe but my best advice is avoid the man and try to make sure he never remembers you are alive. He doesn't have the authority to detain freedmen that aren't under his direct control yet but he is cruel enough he will likely rise through the ranks in spite of his own incompetence so keep a weather eye out." Lightscale went to thank her but he knew words alone couldn't convey what he meant so instead he sent a message to her mind, a feeling of warmth and thanks deeper than any language had yet to explore. "I owe you my life." "No you don't, I am just a judge making the right decision, but I am glad I got to make it. Now as for what you get to take with you from leaving the service, can't let you keep the portable forge or the war wagon but I can let you keep a cart, the remaining Mekillot you have had these last few years, and a bit of iron to make up for all this mess. Now you are dismissed from here and from service, live well Lightscale." "Live well Templar Evard." With that Lightscale left the Temple and walked into the sun with a rolled up requisitions form in hand and a smile on his face. He had planned on rising through the ranks to get close to King Adropinis but already a new plan was forming in his mind, a merchant lord would have just as much access to a Sorcerer-King as a high ranking soldier, and it wouldn't be much more dangerous a job. The young Pterran looked up toward the King's castle with the smile still splitting his face. Someday I will get to you little King, someday the Earth Mother will know peace upon her skin once more.

No chance of allowing incarnum classes (like Totemists and Incarnates)? I'm considering stuff regardless. Specifically a halfling totemist or psion (metacreativity) (depending if meldshaping is allowed)

I've convinced myself to go psion (seer), regardless of whether incarnum classes are allowed. I'll have something up sometime soonish?

ApplicationName: Kanaxa
right-aligned image

Race: Halfling
Class: Psion (Seer)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Description: Short, obviously. Her proportions are normal for a halfling, including her fit musculature and childlike face bearing sharp teeth appropriate to an eater of..."exquisite meats." She wears little in the way of clothing (barely enough to be modest), and if she didn't keep herself immaculately clean, she would be soaked with blood after any hunts.

Background: Kanaxa is much less xenophobic than her fellow halflings, but still doesn't place much trust in those outside the forests she left only a few short years ago, before her time as a foot soldier. She left home only because she had a powerful wanderlust that couldn't be sated by roaming the same forests, even if she got to meet other halflings of different cultures. She didn't want to be the top of the food chain, either, not without work. She wanted other races to see just why halflings are unparalleled in tracking and survival...and everything else, too.

She enlisted in the army and trained under a strict elven man. He may have been lazy, but he did know how to run, just like the stereotypes she'd heard. He also knew how to unlock her psionic potential. He would dart around while they trained, changing direction at random, and she became quite adept at predicting where he'd be at any given time. He also made sure she was capable of defending herself if she had to...which she did on numerous occasions, each time claiming the heart of her kills. Not by tradition or belief in anything, but out of sheer desire to consume the best of meats.

I'm willing to take pointers. I've only ever played one Dark Sun game, and it was definitely Dark Sun Lite.

I have questions!
  • Are you using any of the material from Dragon Magazine #319 (the "Dark Sun Player's Handbook" issue)? In particular, the somewhat more powerful race writeups and/or the 3.5-compliant conversions of traditional Dark Sun weapons like cahulaks and gythka.
  • It's 3.5, so I assume that -- should we live long enough for it to matter -- prestige classes and similar shenanigans are on the table if they're reasonably setting appropriate?
  • EDIT: Actually, in general, what 3.5 books are available, presuming the end result stays appropriate to the setting?
Somewhere around here, I have a bunch of characters I made up when a friends of mine wanted to run a (much higher level than this) Dark Sun game, and wanted to let people choose from, basically pregens. Naturally, that never ran. I'm pretty interested in backing one of them down to L3 to apply here. Some of these were intentionally really bad ideas, though, so ... yeah, I'll see what I can come up with. Always have loved the setting.

Huh. The Dragon 319 version of the pterran is radically different than the athas.org version - especially for druids. Dragon version makes terrible druids - instead of +2 wisdom LA 0 (athas.org) they are -2 wisdom LA 2 (Dragon 319).
