The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley, nominated by Lashiec!

Nomination
  • Page length: 348 pages
  • Genre: Fiction: Victorian coming-of-age drama
  • Synopsis: A young boy in the year 1900 is asked to carry letters to and from two clandestine lovers who are forbidden to be together. The naive accomplice is manipulated by the lovers to do their bidding and is eventually punished for his role in their relationship.
  • Why this book: I don't have any good book friends, so I greatly rely on Google searches that start off with "Books like XXX" or "If you like XXX." The XXX in this case was The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I love a good drama. This particular one seems rich.
  • Discussion Questions:
    • How does the novel's setting and place in time in the Victorian era play into the story?
    • What lessons in humanity are being taught to Leo?
    • This story appears to be told to readers second-hand through present-day Leo's recounting and remembering of his past. How do you think this affects story, if at all?
    • What is really going on here?
  • I have not read this book. I never heard of it until today.

You can support RPGX by picking up a copy of The Go-Between from the linked image above, or here for the Kindle version, or get it from your favorite vendor at Goodreads.

You can begin reading right away, but remember the read doesn't officially begin until May 1st. Post all discussion of the text in spoilers! Label them with the chapter you've read up to so others can avoid them!

Note that there were no new nominations for May, so this selection was rescued from the Island of Misfit Books.

Sorry, Bothers. Hopefully, this one isn't so heavy as the last two!

A weird thing happened when I copied February's nomination, it being the last without any new ones. The copy didn't grab any slashes or separators and it caused the page to freeze. Thankfully it worked when I tried it a second time.

Haha! I'm fine with heavy novels, it's just specifically existentialist ones I get all side-eyey at! I quite like Victorian literature, but I normally read stuff that was actually written in that period.

Hartley wrote the book in 1953, about 1900s society. With our reading it in 2021, the gap between us and Hartley is even bigger than the gap between Hartley and his subject. I find that in itself quite an interesting thought. I'm looking forward to seeing how a writer looking backwards from the 1950s handles it, and what it means to us given our distance from both points in time.

Wow, that's a great perspective that I don't think I would have considered. Nice.
