I love it. And the background is fantastic, too. A weeping angel with it's face concealed.

Aight, so I was chatting with Hextor (some may have happened across him on the site) and in the course of our B.S.ing this render was inspired....

Incredible work, Lizard. That looks just wonderful. I particularly like how her eyes actually betray a hint of pride, as opposed to just being the glass orbs most 3d renderers manage. While I can't really see the cloak in the picture (The part hanging next to her left leg right?), that is still a very nice job.

Thanks. I like how she turned out as well. I'm planning on another set of renders with Shae, an outdoor one where the cloak can be better displayed.

-Lighting and shadows. They add incredible depth to the subject when used well.

[and a good graphics card doesn't hurt either]

OK! So I figured I'd go ahead and test how my inkjob would look like on Will here. Couple things to note about the test image. First you're likely to notice the glaring line which marks the texture break between the face and the head. Don't worry about that, the texture (for the models I work with) have 3 image sets, face, body and limbs. Simply explained here, I've done the face texture, but haven't done the body texture (which also includes the neck and back of the head), so when I do that texture there will be no seam.
Secondly, in the glowing pictures there's two things I want to mention. You'll notice that light is spilling out of the head at 360 degrees at a complete global ray. That isn't quite how I want the light to work, well, it is, but for some reason (I think because I don't have any shadows attached to the light) the light isn't being blocked by anything. When I test for shadows I'll be able to get closer to a solution there.
Also with the glowing effect (literally referred to as "Volumetric" effect), I want to create a visible tangibility to the light as it escapes from the tattoos. In essence I want it to look like there is dust particles in the air, or a fog, what have you, which will make the light's radiation visible. I had a render (I made a long time ago) which demonstrates this, but I can't find it at the moment. I'd have gone ahead and tried the volumetric effect, but when I create and render through a camera capable of that, it exponentially increases render time from 5 minutes to 5+ hours (at the moment I'm just not willing to tie up my computer with it while there's other things I can be doing), but it'll look really cool when I put it together, and if I manage to locate my archived render of the volumetric effect I'll post it for example.
The only other thing that may stand out to you at the moment which I want to mention is how the tattoo is (only in the glowing renders) literally transparent, basically 0% opacity. So if you look at the second picture (side left) you can see the outline of the right side's tattoo showing through as black trails. What specifically causes that is that there is nothing catching the light in the tattoo, the tattoo is transparent so the black is the background. The actual glow effect that we do see is the light reflecting off the back of the head. I'm planning to toy around with opacity and transparencies to create a semi-opaque effect to the area of the tattoo and allow for a surface to catch light on, and in doing so it should also increase the definition of the glowing effect.
Regardless, I thought you'd like to see how its coming along.

Wouldn't you know it, I found that pic a few minutes ago..... So this shows how the light will become visibly tangible with the Volumetric Effect.

I've been staving off saying anything, and don't know if you're still following this thread. However, I feel I should be straight forward about the Klar. I mulled over the idea of limiting visibility on a dragon or dragon-like figure to just the head, but I really don't think that would be a smart way of approaching things. Dragon models are big, really big. Using them takes significant CPU memory regardless of how they're scaled or visible. To take a figure of such size and then tack it into a scene as I was contemplating would invite a lot of technical problems.
I also couldn't find any free models of dragon/dinosaur skulls, and I did a few searches through all my regular channels. I'm going to keep looking, but for the time being the Klar isn't something I can render. If you'd like though, maybe I could get a glimpse of the character that would be holding the Klar, and work on some less uniquely-specific aspects of the render whilst I keep searching for a Klar type object.

Yeah, kinda figured that might be the case. I did some searching on my own as well, without finding anything... though I expect you'd have a better idea of where to look than I would.

The character in question is Lyotah Keen-Eyed, a Shoanti Tribeswoman in a Pathfinder game I'm playing. Here's what I wrote up before as to her appearance:

For a bit more detail, I see most of her arms as being bare, along with her scalp, to display the tattoos... I'm not entirely sure exactly what I want the tattoos to look like, design-wise, so if you've got some suggestions there, I'd be happy to see them. Perhaps a stylized hawk motif, since she's from the Shriikiri-Quah (Hawk Clan). Other than the hide shirt, her clothing (including her cloak) and gear is all of somewhat-worn tanned hides, with only a small amount of woven cloth incorporated.

As for the klar... would it be possible to make some kind of, say, small round hide shield with a forward facing blade (that is, continuing along the line of the arm, rather than sticking straight out perpendicular to the surface of the shield), then if/when you find an appropriate skull model, replace the shield portion (or just graft it on top)?

EDIT: pose-wise... she's a ranger and hunter. So stalking the wilderness would be appropriate, though in her case rocky hills with sparse vegetation is more appropriate than deep woods.

Tattoo effects look sweet! Is it too much to request he gets some on the nose, upper lip, and central forehead? He's supposed to be more or less covered with them. I really like the style of lines you used though, it works very well. volumetric effect looks neat...

I'm thinking I should find a better face shot to get the model closer, but I'm also considering it might not matter that much if you're intending on having the hood there anyway. Would that be necessary/appreciated or no?

Tat additions, no problem.

I haven't done any sculpting on his facial features yet. Any additional information you want to provide should help.

I'm not going to undertake two tattoo jobs of this kind at the same time. I don't think my wrist would forgive me if I did. But I like the concept and once I've got WoLT's tattoos finished I'll start on Lyotah.

I like your work with the tattoos, so I think you've got a pretty good handle on it, just that he's supposed to be covered with them, shouldn't be any open spaces on exposed skin.

I assumed you left his shirt open on the chest before to put more tattoos on him and feature that but thought silently he isn't much to show off his chest but said w/e because it seemed like you wanted to go that route in my head, but now I'm starting to think it might be easier for you to cover his chest with a shirt of some from, unless my original analysis was correct that is

For facial sculpting guides...

For most of the face the following image of Daniel Craig works well, but most images for him don't because he looks a lot different in most of his images...

The two exceptions is his chin itself which is a little too weak and should be a little more along the lines of Kevin Costner in this image...

and his hairline which should be moved forward a tad up top. Also a little less turkey neck would be good.
