Gristle
right-aligned image

The slimes were falling, and Gristle began to panic. The slimes ate kobolds, and Gristle was a kobold!! He couldn't get eaten by slimes now; he had to find his family and get his new friends used to living Underground!

His little mind went blank, and he hopped nervously from one clawed foot to the other with the restless energy of a cornered animal.

"Run... now!" came a voice, and Gristle recognized it as Noisy Friend An'mal. Yes. Yes! His panicked brain latched on to the order --oh thank the Eternal Darkness, someone told him what to do!-- and all two-and-a-half feet of frantic kobold shot into action like an arrow from a bow.

"Run!!" he echoed with a panicked squeak, barreling off into the hallway. "Run!"

He chanced a look over his shoulder, only to see the slime molds coalescing around Big Friend Baruuk. Oh no! Gristle stumbled over his own feet, nearly falling, before catching himself. He bounced restlessly in place, massive eyes darting from the path ahead to Baruuk behind.

Oh no. What to do?! Gotta get away. An'mal said run. Gotta run. Don't wanna die. But new friends! They gotta run too! Baruuk gotta run too. Baruuk not running. Slimes might get Baruuk. Don't want that. Baruuk is friend. What do?!?!

Slimes are scary and dangerous. But Gristle is small... Small and crunchy! But his new friends are nice and they don't want to hurt Gristle and they don't get mad at Gristle's Drum Noises and the slimes want to hurt them all! Baruuk and An'mal and Dagg and Ayaga and Harp Strum all helped Gristle, and now they're in trouble!

A small spark of something foreign stirs deep within Gristle's chest. It grows, burning, spiteful, indignant, as the little kobold sees his new friends in danger. Something savage, angry and protective, relatively foreign feelings to Gristle, claws its way through him, setting his mind and tongue alight, and he feels himself draw in a deep breath as he directs his newfound protective rage at the nearest slime.

"You are bad!!" he bellows, a strange feral magic Casting Vicious Mockery at the orange slime in E4; see fieldset below for details.wrapping around his words and latching onto the slime "You are bad and stupid and smelly, and you will be dead!"

ActionGristle will use his movement to go 15' further into the cave, then stop and use Vicious Mockery against the Orange Slime at E4. It must make a WIS saving throw, DC 12, or take the following damage:
Dice Vicious Mockery:

Ayaga allowed himself to breathe once he had navigated the stalactite field of slime. He sighed with slight relief, and hastily dipped down onto one knee, then the other, to tie up his sandals once more. Going barefoot proved to be very useful for sneaking, as it often did, though after the fact he did second-guess the wisdom of walking without shoes in a place with so much potential acid residue. Oh well. At least they were past that...

The orc lifted his head up as the chorus of wet, slappy splorps resounded through the cavern, and the half-dozen or so quivering oozes hit the floor in front of him. He scrambled to his feet, losing precious seconds as he rearmed himself with his shield and pick... which he glanced at even as he raised it reflexively to strike at the trembling masses. He had seen thick blocks of gelatin made from ox bone back home, and how tough and resilient to poking or slicing they were. Killing something like that seemed unlikely. And he was loathe to put one of his trusted mementos so close to something that very definitely had the power to dissolve bone and metal.

So he hastily dropped his pick's haft down into the loop in his belt, brought his hand back over his shoulder, and seized upon the leather grip of a stout old larch wood walking stick, worn and slightly warped toward one end. This he proceeded to bring down upon the nearest ooze after a quick leap forward, only to shuffle backward several paces right afterward. "Fighting retreat!" He shouted, modifying An'mal's order slightly. "No one gets left behind- not again!"

Day 1

right-aligned image
With the cacophony of sound that Gristle started to make, the slime molds easily found him to be a target to focus on. There senses were honed to one thing, and one thing only: Finding food. And for them, the easiest way to find food was to follow the vibrations in the tunnel. It has been a while since there had ever been this much motion for them to feel and target. But target they did. Once of them even went so far to to disengage from Baruuk in order to go for this obviously bigger, tastier meal.

While the others that weren't engaged took to going after Gristle, some of them found a source of food way before getting to the small kobold. Harp, and Ayaga watches as two of the "egg" looking creatures came towards them while they were blocking their path to gristle, but instantly began to regret their position as the "eggs" started to morph, as what looked like a fluid sausage like appendage formed, and swung at them, trying to batter them. "Shlorp, Shlarp, Shlurp!"

Each appendage manages to make contact with their target, and Ayaga feels exceptional pain as several bits of bone that were adorning the Orc managed to get pushed deep into this skin in the process. As each slime mold finds contact with it's target, it also is able to leave behind a slimy residue upon each person. Instantly they start to feel the presence of the substance that is upon their skin, pain spreading upon Ayaga's exposed skin.

Dagg
Character Sheet

They moved in, seemingly drawn to something the group was doing. Was it noise? Movement? Surely these creatures couldn't see in the traditional sense of the word. But, nonetheless, they were honing in on the group's position.

Without warning, they lashed out and got the drop on most of the group members. Ayaga, standing right next to her, took a mighty blow that looked like it rattled the orc. Dagg, having some knowledge of what similar creatures can do to flesh, lashed out with the shortsword they pillaged off the pink skin earlier, and thrust the blade into the creature, hoping to hit something vital and stop it's onslaught.

She controlled her breathing and made every attempt to keep her heart rate even and calm. She needed to make sure that she didn't panic.

Baruuk Talonface
right-aligned image
Baruuk cursed silently to himself as the slimes began raining down from the ceiling around him. He had been so sure he'd managed to avoid drawing their notice. He was still trying to figure out the best way to deal with the situation he now found himself with when the first slime lashed out at him.

As the orange blob connected with his skin, several things happened at once. The searing pain was one thing, but Baruuk was no stranger to pain. But there was something else as his head suddenly swam, and dark spots appeared in his vision. He was vaguely aware of Gristle yelling and Ayaga's call for retreat.

Unable to focus on his opponents or take effective action against them, Baruuk staggered back from the fight, doing his best to keep his bow between him and the oozes. He wasn't quite sure how he managed to make it back towards Gristle, but there they stood. The bugbear tried desparately to clear his mind of whatever sudden ailment had overcome him at the touch of the orange ooze. He did not want to let it near him again.

Harp Strum
right-aligned image
Harp Strum
Character Sheet

She never got to tell her knock-knock joke to An’mal. It was a good one, too. One of her best. Saved only for those who truly appreciated the art. So yes, it was true, super-duper true that Harp Strum was frustrated at losing the opportunity to prove her worth to him. To impress him. Hear him laugh as loudly as he did for sweet little Gristle who was indeed hilarious and a Kobold of vision but--but--buuuut she wanted the attention as well! Just a little. A smidge. Enough for her to boast to anyone who’d listen that she got the Bombastic One to bust a gut with laughter. But unfortunately, Harp Strum would have to save the pouting for later. Because what each and every one of them feared had suddenly come true.

The slimes stirred from their slumber.

An’mal knew what happened before anyone else did. He broke the terrible, awful, no-good silence with a warning to RUN. And run Harp Strum did. Sprinting past just about everybody until she came close to barreling into poor Gristle. It was strange how different things were in a flock not made of purely Kenku. Normally she didn’t have to look back to know everyone was safe and sound. They just were. It was just the natural ways of things, as all Kenkus were fast and quick on their feet. To out-run trouble was as natural to them as breathing. Or stealing. Or stabbing. But Harp Strum’s new flock weren’t fast and quick on their feet, oh no, not all of them were. Some were slow. Some were lumbering. And some just had terrible, awful, no-good luck.

She heard Gristle cry out in fury, startling Harp Strum to a stop as he followed his twitching, baleful gaze behind her. Baruuk was cornered. Slimes on both sides that sought to make a fine meal of him. Blorping hungrily at what was definitely delicious Bugbear meat as Baruuk was lean and tough, muscular in all the important places. Harp Strum’s heart skipped a beat, her hand dropping to her blade out of reflex. But hesitation gripped the Kenku. She never fought anything that did not bleed red. Whose bones that did not crunch with a well-placed kick to the face or their flesh tear with a snip with a well-honed blade. Slimes had none of those things. They were more like…

Pudding bowls gone wild.

But Harp Strum couldn’t stand by and do nothing. Not after hearing pretty blue-painted Ayaga call for the flock to stand together. His confidence inspiring right up until a fearsome slime spewed its sickly colored guts on his bare skin. Crying out in blinding pain that surged Harp Strum forward like a dagger thrown in the dark, her cloak billowing behind her while her blade gleaned brightly in the lowlight of the cavern.

It was a flurry of unthinking blows that left the bubbling green slime schlopping off Harp Strum’s blade in long gooey strands. Harp Strum silent and swift as she plunged her blade in again and again and again and again until it didn’t move at all.

Panting, Harp Strum cut her eyes to Ayaga in that short instance. Holding his gaze as she said with firm reassurance in his very own voice. “No one gets left behind!” And turned to face the slime that lunged at her, nipping at her poor exposed taloned feet.

Gristle
right-aligned image

The slime ignored him. Indignation rose in his chest-- Gristle had been angry and he had clearly expressed those feelings to the slime mold, and in turn the slime mold didn't even care!

Scary Friend Dagg and Funny Friend Harp Strum had both taken a more direct approach, squashing slimes left and right. Gristle, angry as he was, still wasn't so devoid of senses that he felt confident rushing into an almost certian gooey doom like that. He wasn't smart, but he had some level of self-preservation. He'd stay back here, thank you. Unfortunately, two of the slime molds seemed to share his opinion and had started moving towards him.

"Hey! Go away!" he yelled at the approaching slimes. He felt the acrid wisps of something rise again within him, curling around his tongue and begging to be released. He gladly acquiesced, releasing a stream of angry words wrapped in magic. "Hey! Are you stupid?! I think you are! You are stupid! Stupid and dumb!"

The heavy wooden staff bounced harmlessly against the thickest section of empty good on the entire slime, coming nowhere close to any major organelles or anything else churning around inside of that pungent greenish film. Ayaga didn't have time to regret the failed attack before he was punished for it, however. He didn't expect so much power behind the blow. As that pseudopod shot out and struck him across the front, the orc was immediately winded and nearly knocked to his knees. For a long moment, all that he could hear was the sound of his own skin sizzling as the acid that now coated it took effect. Blood mingled with slimy residue.

That wasn't the thing that set him off, however. What made him angry was seeing the edges of some of his bone ornaments beginning to pop and fizzle as the acid reacted and began to chew through their protective polishes. A cold terror washed over him, and then hardened into icy rage. There was no sound, no roars of anger, no frothing at the mouth. Just heavy breathing, and a faintly selachian look in his eyes, as he raised his impromptu weapon to struck again... only to see the object of his ire rupture and dissolve before his eyes. (Un)fortunately another one of those vile sacks was antagonizing the black and deep blue blur at his side, so the orc turned and swung at that instead.

An'mal
left-aligned image
Name: An'mal

An'mal's warning came moments too late and there was little running from the danger going on. There was a lot of standing and fighting instead. Baruuk at least wisely repositioned himself, so An'mal would become a wall and stand in harms way to make amends for his absentminded drifting upon the tides of rhythm that the sound of the falling slimes had provoked in him. Music must unite and strengthen. But it must never be an excuse to allow harm to come to the band!

Feather's were aflutter. Harp was clearly badly wounded but she had not fled, much to An'mal's chagrin. Nevertheless, the kenku stood and fought with the wild abandon that only the makings of a lead singer could have. The orcish poet, also wounded, stood fearless beside her and together they seemed to have unpieced the two molds that had hurt them. The next two slimes in the wave would not pass him, not by the hair of An'mal's chinny chin. But he was not foolish enough to ruin the sharp end of his drum stick. A slime needed beating, not cutting. His glaive spun in his hand as An'mal brought the heavy haft down upon the nearest slime, his mind dipping beneath the rage that finally broke upon the surface of his consciousness in its full glory. Much of the world dimmed, but all that was battle, all that had to do with death and destruction became sharp, knitted, hyper clear.

CRACK!

The heavy haft of An'mal's spinning glaive obliterated the foul slime nearest him, sending shockwaves through the earth. An'mal moved a step back, turning side on to keep all remaining slimes in his field of vision, ready to obliterate another. But An'mal did not remain still, his feet began to stamp on the ground and he began to chant in rhythm to his stomps, the stops punctuated by his haft slamming into the ground intermittently. The chant arose from the back of his mind, a moment stolen the night before as he chuckled himself to sleep to the anonymous joker who cracked funnies at the campfire nearby.
"Knock Knock!
Who's there!
Parrot!
Parrot who?
Parrot who?"

Hopefully the slimes would be drawn to the rhythm.

Day 1

right-aligned image
While the slime molds were definitely a cause for distraction, their lethality was definitely on display. Given how hurt Ayaga was, it was clear that the group would have to handle these things fast and furiously.

And deal with them the group was.

While Dagg managed a moderate attack against the slime mold that had just attacked Ayaga, Harp was pure fury and feathers as her sword managed to pierce the mold, and some how release a packet of air bubbles, that had seemed to be inflating, it. And it also seemed to be a source of stabilization for it. Ayaga and An'mal, not to be outdone by the soon to be lead singer, managed to throw their own weight and rhythm around, smashing two other slimes into the gravel and bone shards below them. This left three slime molds looking to consume the party, and An'Mal was trying to make himself a tasty treat.

The yellow slime mold found itself with what it considered two options, but it seemed that the one that was speaking directly to it was it's personal choice, as the other option was calling out to all of the slimes available. While it had made it's choice to go after Gristle, An'Mal seemed to disagree with it's choice, as his staff came down upon the slime. But this time, he wasn't able to smash it deep into the ground. This left An'mal looking directly at the Blue Slime as it created it's own new appendage, and attacked at him.

While An'mal was hoping to attract the closest slimes, and in his own way protect Gristle, there was one slime that was further away that heard the vibrations of his words, and took towards them, only to find a different target in it's path. With that Dagg found herself face to shiny rubber surface with an attack coming from the Pink slime, as it reared its pseudopod back and attacked her.

Gristle words while not deadly, had been disparaging enough that the yellow slime mold made a direct path towards him, and when finally close enough, the slime decided that it was time to exact revenge for the biting caustic words.

OOGMStones: 9 minutes, 12 seconds left.

NOTE: I made a tactical decision to change where An'Mal moved to. He wasn't privy to our discussion regarding the bugbears reach not counting towards Opportunity Attacks. As such, since his intent was to try to be a barrier against as many slimes against as many players, I've placed him in I3, instead of I5.

Yellow slimed moved out of An'Mal's threat range, and received an Opportunity Attack for it's trouble.

Baruuk Talonface
right-aligned image
Baruuk's vision finally cleared and he discovered that not only had one of the slimes followed him through the melee, it was now doing its best to dissolve poor Gristle! It was too close to get a clean shot off. The bugbear shift his bow to his off-hand and fumbled at his belt for a sword. He aimed a quick stab at the creature's center of mass, unable to determine any sort of organ or vulnerability. A growl of frustration leaked out from between clenched teeth. "Get away from him, you gloopy bastard! Find your own kobold, this one is ours!"

Anger aside, it wasn't much of a blow. It was hard to tell exactly where the ooze ended and Gristle began. But then again, it didn't need to be a very accurate blow. An'mal had already beaten the thing to within an inch of its life. So when all of Baruuk's anger and pent-up rage unleashed themselves upon the slime via the tip of his sword, the blade easily passed through what was left in the jaundiced monstrosity and left it transfixed to the floor.

Baruuk turned his attention to the kobold beside him. The orange jelly's sting had left him insensate for critical seconds. Who could tell what foul impact the yellow thing's bile was having on Gristle. "Are you okay?"

Gristle

Gristle was not, in fact, okay.

The last thing he remembered was An'mal starting to talk. An'mal gave good advice, so Gristle stopped to listen. He could not, however, parse the instructions being provided. He cocked his head to one side in confusion.

"Parrot?" he asked. "What is a parrot and why does it want to come in? Is it bad? Is there a door here it's supposed to be knocking on? What does--" His next words were cut off as a tendril of slime smacked harshly into his rib cage. Oh riiiight, he realized as the air was forced from his lungs and his little body was hurled onto the floor, he was supposed to be paying attention to the slime-induced impending death directly in front of him.

He let out a yelp of pain as his skull cracked against the stone floor. Pinpricks of light--Stars? he thought dazedly, How did those end up in the Underground?-- flickered in his vision as a horrible burning sensation spread across his skin where the slime touched him.

Oh, he thought, an encroaching darkness battling with the pain for control of his consciousness, This must be what happens when the Second Kobold To Go Into A Place Where The First Kobold Disappeared doesn't come back. I don't think I like it very much. He blinked, slowly, seeing a fuzzy outline of Baruuk. He was saying something, but it sounded funny. Heheeee. Funny noises. Very funny. The darkness overcame him, and Gristle's last thought before unconsciousness claimed him was about his drum.

ActionGristle failed his CON save and is now unconscious.

An'mal
left-aligned image
Name: An'mal

Oh no! An'mal's chanting and stomping stopped suddenly. Gristle hit the the ground, his final sound was what could only be described as a giggle as his questions regarding An'mal's chant trailed off. The bugbear's attempt at drawing the slimes to him had failed miserably and now the leader of the band was dead! How could the music have failed him? No! An'mal had failed the music! He was not worthy of it! He was weak! His music lacked practice and panache! He was a failure! Acid burned through his fur but the pain was fuel to rage on!

His swirling glaive whirled above his head making an almost mechanical sound it spun so fast.

WHACK!

He brought the haft down hard once again, this time the heavy wood aimed at the slime harrassing Bossy Lass. She would be needed! Maybe she could boss Gristle back to life! The slime was dispersed in all directions beneath An'mal's fury, leaving the group clear to tend Gristle. Maybe the kobold was only mostly dead! In An'mal's mind, a place that was now pure chaos, the bugbear roared to his companions 'Tend the leader's wounds before he is all dead! What was actually heard was something more like "Traghlweeeeeed!"

Daggonae 'Dagg' Bloodbane

Dagg
Character Sheet

She could hear it... Though she could admit that there were a fair bit of things that she wasn't adept at, combat awareness wasn't one of those things. So, when her ear perked up to the sound of one of her fallen companions, Dagg didn't skip a beat.

Her fingers loosened around the hilt of the shortsword, leaving it partly embedded within the strange blob-like creature. Her next motions read more like ballet than combat. One hand grasping her spear, she pivoted, turned and launched the spear, striking so deeply into the Slime Mold Blue (J-2) takes 9 points of Piercing Damageblob nearest to An'Mal that she practically pinned it to the ground. But her assault wasn't done. She used the momentum of her throw to carry her around to stomp onto the Slime Mold Pink (J-5) takes 7 points of Bludgeoning Damagenext target in her wake.

Ayaga kept swinging. Even after the slime in front of him had dissolved into disconnected bits of goo, he struck the resulting puddle with the end of his stick as if to punish every last bit for the whole's transgression. But after a few moments it passed, and the orc's arm paused mid-swing. He caught his breath and licked his parched lips, and peeled his eyes away to look around at the rest of the cavern. He saw the other blobs being taken care of one by one and leaving behind their disgusting heaps. But one heap did not look like a slime as his eyes unclouded. It looked rather much like a kobold. The orc gawked for a moment, then dropped his acid-nibbled staff and lurched over to where Gristle now laid still. He skidded to a halt over the body, hands hovering as if to reach out and touch him, but he stopped himself and took stock of things first. He couldn't do this alone- not well, at least. He had to be excruciatingly careful not to worsen any head, neck, or spinal injuries, but he had to do something quickly.

His eyes lifted up momentarily to the nearby kenku, beseeching her.

Gingerly, Ayaga reached out and lightly touched at the spot where the bard's ribcage had been struck. Then he made sure that that side of his body remained upright as he gently rolled Gristle over onto his side, making sure to tuck his arms and legs in and cushion his cheek to keep him in place in a sort of neutral recovery position. He checked the back of his skull for hemorrhaging and applied pressure to it if there was. He forced the kobold's maw open to check if he had bitten off the end of his tongue from the impact of the fall, and to let any resulting blood drain from his mouth rather than pool in his throat and drown him. With a handful of rag and grit, he tried to scrub any lingering essence of the mold's toxins off of the inert little body.

All the while, the orc's breathing slowly changed until he was mumbling. Those mumbles grew louder into murmurs, which took on a certain cadence and tune as they grew louder. He seemed to be whispering some old song in orcish- a spoken request to the spirits, that they might offer clemency and stymie their misintent. He didn't seem to know the words or the rhythm particularly well, as if he was just desperately mimicking what he had long ago watched but never performed, now that no one else was left who could speak it.
