From the Stars to the Shadows

Game NameFrom the Stars to the Shadows
Game SystemShadowrun 5e
ThemeEspionage against an occupying alien force
FlavourDark, violent, and near-hopeless
Plot Summary
Set-UpIt's amazing how quickly the world can be turned upside-down. If anybody knew the attack was coming, they didn't say anything. One minute you were shopping, and the next, everyone froze in place as their AR feeds were filled with live videos of some kind of pods dropping from the sky. Missile defense systems streaked from the ground, destroying a few, and a great dragon appeared, ripping several from the air before falling victim to a sickly green ray from above the clouds. But every defense that metahumanity could muster was soon overwhelmed.

Within an hour, every AAA corporation and world government had capitulated. Life soon returned to something like normal, but alien soldiers patrolled the streets, never letting you forget who your new masters were. The world leaders call it a partnership, but they have to, right? And you hear stories of people disappearing. Top researchers being reassigned, then never heard from again. SINless being herded into camps for slave labor, or worse. People whisper about their plans, but no one knows for sure. Maybe you never will.

But there are some who resist. Soldiers, criminals, or even regular people who lost too much to move on. They strike back, trying to even the odds, but it's a costly fight. You need to know more, get your hands on their equipment, maybe even their officers.

Looks like you've just become a Shadowrunner, chummer.

Notes
right-aligned image
Welcome to my next game! In this campaign, the players will be thrust into the role of resistance fighters against an alien occupation in Seattle. The game will start in the heat of the initial invasion, but it will quickly turn to a more traditional espionage-focused Shadowrun game. Some notes on how this will affect things:
  • The aliens will take over a lot of existing Earth infrastructure, and make extensive use of metahuman collaborators, so the regular social skills, decking, etc. will still be very relevant.
  • There will be chances to acquire and study alien technology/magical goods/dead bodies, and you may be cut off from regular goods and services, so some of the "downtime" skills (Medicine, Arcana, Hardware, Armorer, Chemistry, etc.) may turn out to be more relevant than usual.
  • Your characters may not even be Shadowunners to start. You could be gangers, wageslaves, Yakuza lieutenants, spec ops soldiers, corporate execs, etc., as long as your character would step up and join the resistance.
  • Contacts will be assumed to survive the initial attack. But be careful how much you tell them. Who knows where their loyalties lie?
  • After the invasion, gear acquisition will work more or less normally, but availability may be increased, and lots of Restricted gear may become Forbidden, as the aliens crack down on armed resistance. High-availability gear may require entire runs to acquire.
  • Application Deadline: April 22
  • "Party Size: 4-6"

ApplicationCharacter Creation
Standard Priority, Sum-to-Ten, or Karma
Life modules may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, but I'll probably want to see the build in detail.

Name:
Metatype:
Archetype: Street Sam, Face, Infiltrator, etc.
Current Job: Are you a Shadowrunner, wageslave, soldier, etc.?
Physical Description:
Personality/Background:
Qualities: Some qualities (especially ones about contacts and relationships, like "Dependent" or "Friends in High Places") might have different power levels in this context. Let me know if you have any key qualities that may need to be re-evaluated.
What are you doing?: All players will start out at Lordstrung's Department Store, one of the public entrances to the Ork Underground, when the invasion hits. What are you doing there? Maybe you're a wageslave doing a little shopping, or a Shadowrunner on a job. Maybe you're a Skraacha ganger on patrol, or part of a DocWagon crew on a call.
Role-play Sample: Either a short passage describing your character using a key skill, or a link to a post you're proud of from another game.

Oh, very much yes! I'm definitely interested but will need some time to come up with a character concept. My first instincts are to come up with a 'regular citizen' or somebody in a mafia-like organization. We'll see where my mind goes with this. I've actually been interested in doing something very much like this for a while now. It's about time that somebody turned Shadowrun into something other than the typical kind of game.

No problem! The character creation process can be a bear, so I or someone else can help you through it. There's also a lot of pregens and advice out there if you search for it.

Application: Serenity
Name: Serenity
Metatype: Dryad
Archetype: Mage / Face (Wannabe)
Current Job: Bartender.
Physical Description: Most people who first meet Serenity think she's an exceptionally wispy elf. She has bark-brown hair and leaf-green eyes.
Personality/Background: Serenity is a great listener, and gets people to open up easily. She speaks several languages and converses with most of her clientele in their native tongues.
Qualities: SINner, Day Job (Bartender); Mentor Spirit (Cat), Linguist, Focused Concentration
What are you doing?: Serenity has managed to finish the month with 500 in her pocket - which feels really good after six straight months in the red. She's out shopping for some new threads.
Role-play Sample:
Commercial lifestyle, garage (Body 5+), Yard, Obscure, Private Room.Panther's is a hard-to-find dive bar in an otherwise unassuming neighborhood. The nutrisoy is nothing remarkable, but the liquor is fairly priced. Styled as a speakeasy, the awkward location and don't-ask-don't-tell gestalt attract a fiercely loyal clientele who value their privacy - including more than a few shadowrunners. Panther, the bar's namesake, was one of them. Serenity - the owner, and now also the bartender ever since she had to let Contact(Bartender): Connection 2, Loyalty 4. After she had to let him go, Mac opened up his own place across town selling steak sandwiches and homebrew. He's real popular with magical types.Mac go - is her daughter.

It's a slow night. A dozen or so of the usual patrons are here, keeping lubricated. The bigscreen is tuned to Urban Brawl, with the sound muted and English closed captioning. Serenity has her contact lenses set to replace it with Sperethiel.

The externals show that the same Mitsubishi Nightsky has passed this location three times. Another Mr. Johnson having trouble finding the place. Serenity chuckles, then looks at her regulars with a different eye. Four of them are pacing themselves. And the way Contact(Lone Star Detective): Connection 3 Loyalty 3. Nick's a regular, and comes to Panther's because the liquor is cheap. He's not a big shot, but he knows pretty much everybody and that's not a bad sort to have around.Nick Ryder keeps looking the other way... Smells like a meet.

Contact(Shaman, Shadowrunner): Connection 4, Loyalty 2. Spends a lot of time in the garden.Dines on Ashes, a Lakota shaman, approaches the bar. "I trust the room is available?" he says. Dead giveaway. If he just wanted some privacy, Ashes would use the garden - it's one of the things they have in common, one of the reasons he keeps coming back. If he wants the Faraday cage, there's a meetup for sure.

"How long do you need it?"

He books the room for an hour just as a well-tailored Japanese businesswoman enters. "Konbanwa, Ashes-san," she says. That catches Serenity's attention more than anything else so far. Ashes is the bagman for his crew, but not the face; if he's the contact for this run, that means it's something a little unusual. She picks up a glass, polishes it so she doesn't seem to be staring, and opens up her third eye. Taking a longer look at the businesswoman, she almost drops the glass.

She positively reeks of magic. She's no Johnson... she's a wagemage. Serenity's curiosity wars with her professionalism. Whatever the job is, Ashes will be more than able to handle it... and her clientele don't come here seeking her Serenity is a Vodouienne, and should be starting play with a few services from a bound Guardian spirit.spirits. Well... except maybe K:Alcoholic Beverages 3THOSE spirits...

If Panther hadn't died, that'd be me taking that job. I'd've paid my dues and then some, by now. But her mother is gone, and no matter how sweetly she asks, Contact(Decker): Connection 1, Loyalty 5. A retired shadowrunner turned software security consultant. Used to run with Serenity's mother, but hasn't been able to keep up with the state of the art. Her skills are still good but the tech costs a little more every year...Sea Moss isn't talking about what happened. And at the end of the day... Serenity can't bear the thought of losing her garden. So instead of running the shadows, like her mother before her, she tends the bar and keeps the lights on and provides the cool kids with a safe place to meet up.

But as Ashes and his team file into the back room she can't help but catch his eye. "Stay low, chum," she says.

I love Shadowrun anyway, and this is one of the more interesting campaign ideas I've come across - definitely interested, app in progress!

Id really love to express my interest, but I actively played Shadowrun during the 2nd and 3rd editions. Is 5e wildly different in terms of rules or should I recognize a fair bit? Are the thematic elements of the world vastly changed?

Application
Name: Imryll Grexidor
Metatype:Elf
Archetype: Infiltrator/Street Sam
Current Job: Soldier (recon specialist)
Physical Description: tall and thin, Imryll has a military haircut (which she tolerates what's left of it is light brown hair and her green eyes peer out at the world. She looks almost rail thin, but her muscles have been finely toned over a few years of military training and service.
Personality/Background: As a young elf, Imryll saw the terrible toll megacorps took on lives from the point of view of her own family, as her parents were both wageslaves to a Megacorp. This resulted in her slowly becoming more and more angry towards them. This anger resulted in her acting out, sneaking around and beginning to steal things. At first, it was sneaking out after curfew and swiping wallets and creditsticks from unaware passersby.

Imryll dreamed of pulling off that high level heist to really hurt a Megacorp where it hurts (steal some super secret piece of tech from a highly secure area).

However, before she could get into too much trouble; the military collected her and trained her how to shoot a gun, and swing a sword and fight generally. She now spends her days as soldier, with a specialization in recon and intel gathering; but the deep seeded hatred of megacorps has never gone away.

She approaches situation with utter professionalism. She conveys the image of someone who is calm, cool, and collected. She perfers to get in and out clean; but if there are small messes or trails of blood along the way, then it's not her fault. Sometimes, stuff jsut happens.
Qualities: Consummate Professional, Agile Defender, Catlike, Exceptional ability (agility);
What are you doing?: Soldier providing "extra security" for the mall.
Role-play Sample: The rumors had flown around for weeks. a cyberdeck in a vault. For several weeks, Imryll had heard around the neighborhood that a) the item had some valuable data on it and b) the old "analogue wizard" who currently had possession of it wasn't a security nerd. Sure, he had a few basic security measure (computerized lock, a vault hidden behind the a painting with a biometric lock. Truthfully, all of these things were just minor inconveniences towards her goal.

She gently opened a window and dropped inside, keeping an eye out for cameras and sensors. Making her way quietly to the vault, she uses her burglar tools kit (as well as a little Matrix knowledge) to unlock the vault, disable sthe alarms and swipe the cyberdeck right out from under the old geezer's nose. Turning around, she swiftly exited the home the same way she'd come in and wondered, just what was on this thing that made ti so valuable.

Whatever it was, she was certain to get a good price for it! Now, all she needed to do was find a willing fence for the data.

I haven't played anything earlier than 4e, but as I understand it, there was a big shift in the rules between 3e and 4e. The thematics should be roughly the same, although the political situation has evolved somewhat.

That's unfortunate to hear, at least for me. Obviously, I don't have any of the 5e errata with how far back I go.

Thematically, I've got my bases covered and then some. Mechanically, I'd need total hand holding, which I know can be a bear for a GM.

As a veteran of the 3rd edition era myself I can assure you that if you could wrap your head around 3rd edition SR, you'll have no trouble getting up to speed on 5th. As much as the mechanics-glut of SR grates on me these days (I was more patient with that stuff in my youth, I suppose) 5th is by far the easiest-to-handle of all the editions I've played in.

There is also a very helpful SR community on the site here so you should be golden.
