APPLICATION - Submitted for Consideration

Toben
left-aligned image
Toben

Name: Toben
Race: Forest Gnome
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Class: Wizard - School of Illusion
Background: Far Traveler

Personality Traits: Toben is a gnome that has traveled far and wide exploring new places and things. He is on the hunt for knowledge and adventure as he feels that experience is what drives wisdom and that wisdom is what makes each individual unique or perhaps...greater. He is mischievous and likes to be jovial and happy. He uses his illusionary skills to entertain those who he likes or frighten and drive off those who he doesn't.

Appearance: Toben is not your typical forest gnome, though he seems to always have a smirk on his face like he is the only one getting the joke. He looks like a middle aged man on a short stature body which some feel that his a very ugly, overly large pixie. But, his facial features reveal his gnome heritage, including his overly large feet. His hair is dark brown and he sports a goatee on his chin. He has tattoos on many places of his body as wards of protection against those whom might harm him. His skin is an earthy brown and wrinkled from the sun. Toben wears his dark brown hair short, which is atypical of the forest gnomes of his homeland.

Backstory:
Toben hails from the Feywild, the forest gnome's ancestral homeland. He studied for nearly 30 years as a wizard in training. There, he learned how to speak with the animals and hone his abilities as an illusionist. When it was time for him to leave the comfort and convenience of being a student, Toben was shell shocked. He felt that he had so much more to learn than what his masters had taught him so far. He decided to set off in search of more knowledge and wisdom at the Candlekeep library. His travels, however, were not direct. He spent time amongst the civilized folk in various hamlets and villages along the way. He studied people of all races and learned that he had a knack for entertaining. He had a smile on his face and always made the women and children laugh at his silly illusions. However, Toben's mischievous side always seemed to emerge.

This had brought him a bit of trouble, however. Some of the local ruffians in the thieves' guild were rumored to be kidnapping the innocent daughter of the local mayor for blackmail and extortion. Toben happened to be walking by the alley where the thugs were laying in wait for the barmaid, and he overheard their plan. With a flick of his wrist, Toben summoned the image of a beholder to frighten the men away, but as they ran out of the alley, they bumped the gnome, and the illusion fell. His tricks were instantly discovered, and he was chased by the men. He managed to hide in a small barrel in an adjacent alley, but it was too late. The men reported back to their leader and a price was put on Toben's head. He had no choice except to leave the town for his own well being, though, he still feared for the girl While trying to slip out of town, a shadowy figure approached him and offered him safe passage. What Toben did not realize, however, was that this man was a Harper's agent.

While Toben was being smuggled out of town, the man told him of the organization and the need for similar talents to those that Toben possessed. Apparently, there were bigger problems brewing across Faerun, and the Harpers were amassing new recruits. Toben was intrigued and felt that 'on the job' training would do him just fine. Together, they made their way to Neverwinter where Toben joined others like him. Little did the poor gnome realize that he was destined to battle forces well beyond anything he had ever imagined.

The gnome utilized his skills as an illusionist to be the hands and feet of the Harpers. He was able to extract information and hunt down rumors with detailed precision. He quickly advanced within the Harper's ranks while still following his love of traveling and mischief.

After completing his latest assignment, he received word about the small village of Deepwood and growing trouble in the area. The rumors contained bits and pieces of conflicting information about wolves, half man-half beasts, and that the villagers were becoming the prey to these troubles. Toben tingled with excitement as he was tasked to investigate and do what he could to bring the important logging settlement back into tranquility.

Roleplay Example: On the Road Again

Gwendolyn, Cleric of the White RobesName: Sister Gwendolyn

Age: 18

Race: Teifling

Class: Cleric

Physical Description: Gwendolyn is slim, rather petite girl for her age; a body cultivated by a youth of religious discipline and fasting. Her long hair, black as ebony, tumbles in loose, bushy, waves to her middle back, contrasting drastically to her milk-white skin. As far as teiflings go, her infernal features are rather minimal (perhaps to her benefit): short, skin covered horns poke out from the hairline on her upper forehead, and a somewhat slim tail is nearly always covered by her pure white cleric robes. Horns and tail aside, the most unsettling part of her appearance is her eyes: marbled, pure white orbs with just the faintest grey hint of a pupil.

Backstory: It is unheard of for an infernal one to be accepted into the White Robes of Solinari. At least, that is what the other priestesses said when the Mother Abbess announced to the that they had received an orphan tiefling that was to be raised in the abby as one of their own. It became a bit more believable when they saw the child: skin and eyes as white as the moon they worshiped, and hair as black as the surrounding sky. Of course, such an appearance inspired half-truth rumors, from the child being born directly of the pale moon himself as a test of tolerance, to being the blessed, bastard child of some mother who wished a pure life for her daughter. But the instruction of the Mother Abbess was that the newly named Gwendolyn would live the life of a normal Cleric priestess, and that instruction was obeyed.

As the years went on, Gwendolyn proved to be no different than the other young sisters, despite her appearance, and was even gifted in the clerical arts, especially healing and channeling the divine light. A gentle soul, air of humility, and childlike lightheartedness was what most of the sisters came to expect from her, accompanied by an fervent devotion to the order.

Of course, not everyone was able to get past a tiefling living in the abby halls, especially among the elder sisters on Board of Judgement. When little things went wrong, and the elder sisters were around to see it, Gwendolyn was usually blamed and punished. Unfortunately for them, she took to everything with a sense of enthusiasm and humility, so the punishment of cleaning or fasting wasn’t all too satisfying.

Perhaps now, during Gwendolyn’s coming of age, they can strike a harder blow. At eighteen, the White Robes send their sisters out on their first worldly mission to service others, and the Board of Judgement chooses who goes where. Usually, it is to a large city with beautiful, large temples, where they can shine and show the presence of the Lord Solinari. But Gwendolyn is being sent far off the beaten path, into Deepwood, to investigate the death of a long-forgotten priestess at dark, nefarious hands.

Note: I only just realized that Tinuviel's character app is named Gwethren, which is all too close to Gwendolyn haha. If needed, I can change the name to something else. I'm not too attached to it

5 hours left? No problem.

Good luck everyone!

Brahg, the Stick-EaterName: Brahg Stonecleaver
Age: 20
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Monk
Alignment: Neutral Good
Appearance and Personality: Big even for a half-orc, Brahg strikes an imposing figure. A life in solitude in the wilderness has made him strong, tough, and scarred. On top of his tusks, yellow eyes, green skin, and thick, furrowed brow, most people steer clear of him. Still, Brahg is a gentle soul at heart. He is never one to start a fight, but his fierce protectiveness leads him to end them.

He wears self-made robes, simple, frayed things fit only for a beggar, and he keeps his arms and feet wrapped in white bandages. A hood always covers his head while he roams around society, mostly to avoid the stares of passers-by... pity that his massive frame makes it so the hood never works.

For those who manage to get a good look at his face, they are greeted with the vision of a trio of scars, one down his eye and over his lips, and the other two stretching from his ear to cross over the first. This same ear, his left, looks chewed off, with the pointed top half completely missing, and instead capped with a jagged edge.

Brahg's silent, stoic personality ensures that no one in Deepwood knows how he received these. Few even know his name. Still, his humble nature and generosity has, over many months, earned him respect in the small village.

Backstory: Brahg never knew his father, and was raised by his orcish mother, in a tribe of orc raiders. From a young age, he had already been decided as the weakling. He was smaller, weaker, and as he grew older and developed his personality, it became clear that he did not have the heart to be a highwayman or a warrior. His mother tried to instill brutality in him through application of her own, but such efforts only served to make him more timid.

But fate has a strange way of ending. One day, the tribe's ways brought about soldiers, and their own destruction. Not a single orc was spared death or imprisonment... all except Brahg. He did not fight until the end of the ambush, and when he did, it was to save the life of a soldier from Brahg's own mother. The half-orc killed her, and saved a stranger.

The soldiers had orders to capture all they had found, but out of a matter of honor, they could not punish Brahg... but they could not take him with them. They turned their backs and let him escape... hopefully he would find his way to a new town, far away, and be happy.

After journeying from town to town, Brahg was invariably turned away, until he decided to eschew society altogether. The guilt from killing his mother weighed heavily on him, even if she had been cruel, and he felt that the villages' hatred of him was only karmic justice. He could not expect to be welcomed until he had atoned for his sin of matricide. For almost two years, Brahg remained in the outskirts of Deepwood, a tiny village of similar folks who enjoyed their privacy. He only entered the village every so often for supplies, trading wild herbs, flowers, and animals. Brahg did not remain in town for long, and never caused trouble, so the locals did not care. He was simply a strange, wild half-orc that they saw every other week or so. However, the longer this went on, the more and more the town came to trust him. Indeed, his willingness to trade hard-to-acquire goods for very little was infrequent enough to avoid putting competitors out of business, but seen as a great generosity to those he dealt with. Of course, this was in no way intentional on Brahg's part, and in his efforts to avoid being a bother, did not notice as he turned into a strange amalgamation of an urban legend and philanthropist.

One day came eventually came in which Brahg heard about the priestess' death at the hands of some monster. He had heard the howling in the night. He had even thought he had seen strange shadows in the night. Perhaps this was his chance for atonement... to hunt down and capture the terror of the night, the beast that haunted Deepwood... to protect this small village that was the closest place to home he had ever known.

RP Sample:

"There he is, the half-orc."

A man leaning against the outer wall of his home takes a drag from his pipe and points out a figure in the street to his fellows. The figure is tall, broad-shouldered, and cloaked in ragged, dirt-brown rags, like a beggar. His face is hooded, but his lower jaw and protruding tusks still show from under the cowl. On his back he carries the carcass of a fully-grown bear, its neck twisted to show that it had been snapped.

"Nine hells... he killed it with his bare hands?" one of the other men asks, his jaw agape and his own pipe dripping ash into the alley dirt as his arm hangs slack.

"Aye," the first man replies. He looks away from the half-orc with his one good eye and back at his friends. "He just... wanders in every now and then, carrying a horse's worth of whatever he can find, and trades them for next to nothing. He don't speak much, neither, so we don't know if he's doing it out of charity, or if he's balmy, or what... he's just some stick-eater that showed up two years ago. Don't know nothin' else."

The men turn back to watch the robed figure wander down the street, his head bowed and his pace slow and easy, as he makes his way towards the market stalls. The butcher's eyes are already full of greed... he knows he is about to get quality stock for dirt cheap, and he isn't wrong. First the half-orc visits the tanner to have the bear skinned, then to the apothecary to sell the entrails, and finally to a jeweler and a carver to sell the teeth and claws. Finally, it is the butcher's turn. By the end of it all, the half-orc has a new sack over his shoulder, filled with food, some jars of ointment or potions or some such, and a sewing kit. He adjusts the sack, then makes to leave town again, just when a human girl runs up to him.

"Hey, Mister!" The child stares up at him with bright, excited eyes. She is clearly a little nervous, but on the other side of the street, her mother watches with a smile on her face. She had encouraged her daughter that it would be okay to talk to the stranger. The half-orc looks to his side, then realizing the speaker is a child, downwards until his chin is almost touching his own chest. He says nothing, but a slight, awkward smile crosses his face.

"Mama said these are for you! Here!" The child holds up a pair of thick leather gloves.

Brahg didn't know, but the last time he came to town, he brought with him rare mountain flowers, and with them, the apothecary had been able to make medicine for the child's father. To them, he was a savior, and in return, the mother saw his bandaged arms, thought that he must injure them often gathering thorny flowers, and made him the gloves.

The half-orc smiles wider now, and not so awkwardly. He bends down and with one hand, pats the girl on the head before accepting the gloves. He slides them on, touched to find that they are the perfect size, and very soft. He bows his head, a wordless thank you... but before he leaves, he reaches into the sack and pulls out a small pouch, placing it into the girl's hands. With that, Brahg leaves Deepwood.

The girl reaches into the pouch and pulls out a fist full of small, polished rock orbs... marbles. It was a game he had loved playing in his tribe, but so rarely got to enjoy as an outcast. Had he taken them into the woods with him, they would have served as a pleasant piece of nostalgia, but nothing more. He had no one to play with. Hopefully, the girl would love them as much as he had in his childhood.

As Brahg disappears past the treeline, he clasps his hands together, rubbing the soft lining of his new gloves against his skin, and smiles ear to ear.

~It's closing time~

Going to read up on the applications and make some choices. It could take me a day or so to figure it out. There looks to be a plethora of fantastic players and limited slots. I'll post here and close the thread once I've chosen. PMs will be sent to the fortunate few.

Open all the doors and let you out into the world
