Hey I would totally say never under estimate a newbie to the site.

I've seen it before someone joined this site to simply participate in one of these contests (I don't remember if it was outplay or Iron DM)
And they did absolutely amazing.

Also, the "I wanted to try anyway" attitude is a huge part of what keeps this community going. All of us were newbies once, even crusty old judges like Squeak.

Oi, Squeak's medical skin condition was discussed in confidence among the staff, and wasn't supposed to be expounded on to anyone else!

I honestly would have never thought to apply until one of my own players (who has been here longer than me and has gotten post of the month before) suggested that I do so. I haven't even been playing RPGs for much longer than a year! This site is pretty good to new people, even endearing sometimes

So, is it normal for Round 0 to be so small? I just realized there's only eighteen apps and R1 is supposed to have sixteen people.

I am actually surprised there were so many entries, as for the last year or so I've noticed the ratio of DMs to players on this site growing ever smaller

Seems like it's always been that way. But maybe I missed some kind of golden age of surplus DMs?

Without actual stats to rely on, I think it's alway been a large gap in DMs and Players.

I think this is true, and will always be true. I cannot speak as to whether that ratio is growing worse, however. I think part of what we are seeing is the shift from Pathfinder to 5th edition as the dominant system. Initially there aren't too many DMs to run 5th edition, so it seems like fewer DMs than there used to be. Then a lot of DMs switch over, leaving a lot fewer running Pathfinder games, which in turn makes it seem like there are fewer DMs from the Pathfinder community's perspective. Also along the way, we are likely to lose some DMs who feel less motivated to run a new game now that their system is no longer the dominant system (and they don't like the new system or don't want to switch over), because they don't feel like they'll get enough players. Who knows how many that really is, however.

As for Iron DM...it does feel like the number of applicants has gone down a little over the last few years. I think that's just a matter of timing though, sometimes it works out better for people, other times it doesn't...

Yeah, we're getting into heavy school days and holiday season. Things get hectic for a lot of people around this time of year

Considering DMing is more difficult and time consuming than just being a player (in my experience anyway), and there’s already so many people on here with time constraints, it’s not really surprising to me that there are less DMs than players. Plus, in general, there’s a lot of people who just prefer to play instead of organise a possibly long-term game. It evens out most of the time I think, considering you only need one DM to avrg.4 players to a game, but I think @ParzivalFair is right. School and holidays might even be keeping people who would have done Iron DM from participating simply because they wouldn’t be able to keep it up.
