What's in your name?

I couldn't help but notice how many creative usernames folks have around here! I spend an inordinate amount of time naming characters and places. I suppose it isn't critical, but it is the first thing you see and first impression can be important I guess... Not sure if anyone feels the same way. But if interested these are a couple of resources I've used:

Well. Spatula of Doom was a comedic superhero I created for City of Heroes way back before City of Heroes even released.

He was a cook in a super-science complex who dicked around with a teleporter after hours and accidentally teleported a spatula into his own forehead. Rather than causing a massive explosion when the handle of the spatula tried to occupy the same space as his forehead, his latent psychic superpowers manifested to create a wormhole to shunt the handle into another time-space. Unfortunately having an open wormhole in his frontal lobe drove him moderately insane.

I honestly have no recollection anymore. I suppose, it was imagination?

Dirkoth was one of my first, oldest and longest running/recurring PCs back in the 70's, and well into the 80's. He was formulated, reformulated, and re-reformulated through every edition.

Spatula sounds brilliant! Reminds me of the Tick's battle cry "SPOON!". That's amazing you have kept a character running that long Dirk! That's got to be quite the evolution. Lost all my old D&D and Marvel Superheroes books but it would be fun to see all of those old characters.

I watched a video about Irish first names that are hard to pronounce, carefully studied the spellings and pronounciations, and decided that I should try to use some of those for D&D names. They just seem to have the right flavor.

Since they are difficult to spell and/or pronounce, I felt it was unlikely that any of them would already be taken as a username. It can be pronounced Tige/Tyge, as one syllable.

Irish and Welsh certainly make for challenging phonetics and spelling. I used to read a lot of Bernard Cornwell's books and he uses period spellings of names.... like Dayffd in place of David.

It's my real name and my initials. Do I get originality points for the initials?

I played the original (CGA graphics old gold box DND style) Neverwinter Nights on AOL. (Dial up modem, initially pay by the hour, 500 player capacity). One of my two main characters was a PVP specialist in the Royal Guards guild called RG(clan initials) O'Dyna. O'Dyna was the name of one of Finn Macool's band, Dermot O'Dyna, "of the lovemark". So that transferred over to RPGX, but he had to have a real first name instead of an old Clan or Guild name. Ogham was the druidic type of plant related runes, unlike Norse runes. Ogma was the wise bardic type god of the Tuatha. Hence, Ogam O'Dyna.

I was reading The Kalevala when I signed up, and English transliterations of Finnish are all over the place.

I was feeling uncreative and my standard uncreative username at the time, Pseudo_Nymm, was already taken. Not sure how that one got taken before Pseudonymous.

Love the Finnish reference! Väinämöinen has more umlauts than Mötley Crüe! Pseudonumous... a great convention if you are stuck or a user names is taken: just add unnecessary umlauts!!!

Love the Kalevala! I got into that from both old DnD and the Complete Enchanter by De camp. I even went so far as to introduce Meilliki as a whimsical and illicit love interest for Uller in my Urban Fantasy novels lol.

That's the same book with a sasquatch asking as shamanic mentor to the main character. There's also a centuries old rival Einherjar with severely pcychotic tendencies.

I just blatantly swiped mine from the Age of Fire series and added some numbers. In other words, I attended the Dilbert school of creativity and fell asleep during the lesson.
