This is a magical trap. When triggered, everything suddenly goes dark and the sound of crumpling paper can be heard, which might be mistaken for a crackling fire. Attempts to use light sources are ineffective, even magical light. Eventually it becomes warmer and difficult to breathe. After more time, the victims pass out and eventually die of asphyxiation, (assuming they breathe). What is happening is magical bags have been summoned over the victim's heads. The bags are force effects and have no real substance to them, so they can’t be felt. They can, however, be removed just like a normal bag. One can simply pull it off or rip it off. The first player to do so can see the other characters all standing there with bags on their heads. To keep this 34 trap from being too lethal, one can give clues. When they move their heads, the rustling increases. When they breathe, they feel their breath come back at them, as if they are breathing against something. They can only see strait below them, their bodies and feet out to about six inches.

Just so everybody understands the situation, I will recap.

You are in a tunnel 10' wide and 10' tall. At the end of the tunnel against the wall is a narrow stone stair (3 feet wide) going up to a small trap door in the ceiling that appears to be stuck shut.

Next to that trap door, is another larger trap door in the ceiling that is approx 8'x8' but has no stair or ladder under it. It is closed but does not seem to be stuck.

Unless the PCs pull out some kind of cirque de sole manevuer, you can't get into the large trap door. So to go up into the abbey means going up the stair, busting open the small trap door and emerging 1 at a time on the other side. There is no cover from below.
