I can't find the Alan-atu feat in the knowledge page, but the feat Caramon's fist could be good! Alert is clearly very good!
To throw out an idea of one I read (you would have to take the Fighting Initiate feat, then choose this fighting style)the other day when creating Tegan that appears rather new (I use the website 5e.tools btw. Very helpful as it has all the content and you can add filters to only include options applicable to your game): Unarmed Fighting -Your unarmed strikes can deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier on a hit. If you aren’t wielding any weapons or a shield when you make the attack roll, the d6 becomes a d8. -At the start of each of your turns, you can deal 1d4 bludgeoning damage to one creature grappled by you. For low levels, this could be pretty good, but you'd have to change up some of your character to get the Strength to damage bonus. The ability to start out at a 1d8 martial attack jumps you up to the equivalent of a level 11 monk though! You could still attack with Dex (at least in my interpretation of the feat), but I dont think you would get to choose the 1d6/8 AND Dex bonus to damage. Lucky is always very good as is Sentinel if you don't like foes getting away from you, but are harder to use in PbP due to their reactive nature (hence why I took tough over sentinel). Prolly more than you wanted, but just some ideas!

If it is between the two, I personally would point to Caramon's fist. Double crit chance, plus a guaranteed prone on a crit, with the chance to also add some disadvantage? That is legit and a bit more fun than maybe just the strict mechanical benefit of Alert.
I have thought about choosing something else for Tegan's feats just due to the boring aspect of Tough, but nothing has really stuck out. If anyone has a cool idea, feel free to let me know.

I like Alert, but Caramon's Fist seems insanely good for a monk.

Ah, then I'd definitely go for that one because of how well it synergises for a monk, but if you prefer the idea of Xihue being the ever alert type it's definitely a good feat. So, basically, I'd choose according to which better fits the character.

I'd also advise taking Caramon's Fist, if only because you'll rarely if ever get the chance to play that again.
@edit: But I agree with the others, definitely choose Alert if that's what your gut tells you fits your character.

Personally I choose my character's feats for flavour reasons, otherwise I take the ASI. As far as flavour goes, I feel Tough and Heavy Armor Master suit Tegan's flavour, so I wouldn't worry if they don't seem interactive enough.

@Black Jim:
One last thing though. Couldn't you just play variant human and then take both Alert and Caramon's Fist? Or would that lose you too many ASI?

@Tommy, Slasher? Slowing down enemies might keep them close to your tanking and give you another +1
Shield master is always good and fits your flavor if you don't have a good use for your bonus action. |

Even if that means you can't take both Alert and Caramon's Fist, since you only really need +1 on DEX, WIS and CON, any feat that gives you one of those could actually make your character playable. For example, imagine making Xi into a variant human with Caramon's Fist and then complementing him with Observant or Crusher. Either of those could be very fun.

Shield master is cool, but RAW it's not my favorite, because the bonus action happens after the attack.
I was considering getting a second fighting style (defense), but decided that HP was better considering all of Tegans hp are a bit better due to the DR. edit: The feat I strongly considered (and still considering) is Mounted Combatant. It would be of literally 0 use right now as I don't have a mount. If Tegan does get a mount though, he could use a lance, get advantage, and do cool knight things that make me happy. I am thinking about taking this at a higher level, but I also really need my ASI's to go into stats, so I am torn.

Yeah, I actually like Shield Master for everything else. Dex save help and pushing people around.
Twilight Sanctuary(next level) from Kaylen and Heavy Armor Master will definitely make him a survivor. If you like Tough, take it of course. Remember on average you are going to have better than normal hit points with the way Elanir is allowing the better of average or a roll every level. There's something to be said about being an incredible damage sponge. It should definitely make itself felt in the narrative if Tegan shows himself irrepressible under pressure.
I will say that I'll be curious about seeing the eventual combat encounters. I imagine that it will become quite the challenge to balance combat for this many players and all characters starting far above average.
