positions on the deck, nearby the captain. They wear the insignia of the Order of the Gauntlet. As the genasi approches, Captain Schon is elaborating on Gil's advice to Storm. "If you're feelin' shaky already," she tells the dragonborn, "I recommend you try things up here for a while at least. Might not seem like it, but it's better if you can see the water. More important, you'll have less to clean up when you 'drain the bilge.'" A few of the crew enjoy a little laugh. "Just stay out of the way," cautions Schon.

Then the captain notices the water genasi, as do the armored men. "Stop right there," Schon tells her, interrupting Gil's greeting. "You'll wait for permission before you board my ship. You especially. Let's talk down there," she instructs, as the captain and her apparent guards escort Morgan to as private a spot as can be found on the dock nearby.

Once in private, Schon questions Morgan aggressively, without further introduction. “You worship the Sea Bitch?” she asks. “Pray to her, make offerings? And you brag about that? And you want to get on my ship?”

Tolan was sitting on the side of the ship hanging his feet off the edge watching the people board. The halfling's ears picked up two things. The first was a reference to someone he had not met yet...Who ever this Rolan fellow is he better get he soon he will miss his ride. The second, was the way the other spoke to the arrival of the water woman.

He was about to wave to her but was interrupted by Schon talking to her. Tolan kept a watchful eye on them as they spoke. He was not one to let a chance to save a damsel in distress go to waist.

Morgan
right-aligned image

Among the adventurers that Morgan had spotted, the elf-human was the first to offer her a kind greeting. But just as she was hopeful to make the connection and to affiliate herself with her new packmates, Capitain Schon interjected herself and quickly turned the genasi's hope into dismay. Neither of the emotions had made it on Morgan's eerily still face, but when the captain seemed like she particularly didn't want Morgan aboard, not only were her expectations betrayed, it also hurt. "I... Okay..." As the former speaker of her tribe she didn't want to appear weak so openly because those that she would fight alongside had to see her strength first before they would be willing to rely on her, but faced with the chieftain of The Journey singling her out, Morgan found herself thrown off-kilter and then simply followed silently as Schon and her armed guards escorted her off the ship and into the alleyways of the docks. Did I do something wrong?

To talk privately like this Morgan was already dreading that there had been some unspoken or merely unknown rule that she had broken somehow, but when Captain Schon suddenly attacked the Queen of the Depths and called the believer's deity by the most derogative of terms that she had heard, Morgan's dismay swayed to shock and also a very rare emotion for her: down-right anger. She dare...?! Does she not know that she will be smited? As Schon went on to question her prayers and her offerings and promoted that this should bar Umberlee's own from boarding her ship, Morgan's anger quickly returned to even more shocked dismay as she realized how truly ignorant the captain was. Her blank mien had never wavered and her hand had never moved into the direction of her shell-covered staff which could quickly become a magical weapon, but as Morgan stoically faced Schon and her incredulous assault, she couldn't help herself but to clench her blue webbed hands into fists. The primordial's voice was grave instead of soft and spoke firmer and louder than usual, yet she wasn't quite shouting then and there. "What profane things are you saying? And how reckless and without love for your own..." Morgan's blank expression simply lacked any kind of depth to depict her emotions, but through the tone of her accusations Morgan tried to get across how truly abhorred she was with Schon's statements. That there were armed men that might escalate this into violence vaguely occurred to the fit hunter-gatherer, but she felt that she had already taken on the duty to not let the worst come to the worst for the crew of The Journey.

"You dare to take your ship out into the Wavemother's realm and not pray to her and present offerings? Do you not know that the merest mention of such madness should it reach the Queen's ears would lead to the death and destruction of anyone on your ship?" The images of all the shipwrecks Morgan had visited in her youth flashed before her eyes and even coming from a tribe of reclusive water genasi she didn't believe for a second that those who could not breath underwater would have survived the events that must have preceded them. "Her which I serve is called the Dread Umberlee because those that anger her face storms, waves and worse when she finds them. And even should she be in a rare lenient mood and you have not angered her, what reasons have you given her to not take your lives when you haven't presented her with at least exquisite offerings at the start of your voyage?" Morgan faithfully believed that someone had to seriously grab Captain Schon and to violently shake her and ask why as a voyager of the sea she did not know such most important things. But seeing as helping Schon with her ignorance was the task of a speaker and not of a hunter, the life cleric of course did no such thing. "I meant to join your vessel and to not let any ill tidings befall you, your crew or your voyage. I already vowed to myself to care for each one of your lives and that I will do all I can to not let any harm come to them. And for you to challenge Umberlee so brazenly, with such reckless self-endangerment that could be so easily prevented... I could not sit by idly. Will you not let me help you make the offerings that would give your ship clemency and the hope that Umberlee would allow you to traverse above her shadow?" But as Morgan stared at the indignant captain that seemed to understand so little of the ocean's Queen, the waif in Morgan grew desperate in fear that Schon would never be willing to listen to her. So she quickly added on, speaking willful words with an expressionless mien. "In my own possession I have at least 250 pieces of coveted gold. If it will help you ease the burden to make this decision I can easily enrich your offering by the merits of what adventuring I have done in these lands. Please, I urge you. Think of the lives of your people!"

Captains were judge and jury on their ships and Gil wasn't about to cross Schon, but his curiosity was piqued and a good show was hard to resist. He was at the railing next to Tolan before Schon reached the dock.

Gil muttered "Hm, what d'ya suppose that's all about? Folks wasn't exactly knockin' the door down ta go on this run, ya'd think the cap'n would be takin' who she can get." He kept an ear turned Perception 18toward the dock as the captain hustled the blue woman off.

Tolan sat for a moment. Looking at Gil he nodded. "You make a good point. I will be right back." The halfling jumped to his feet and started walking down the ship toward the gangplank. His hands behind his back, casually making his way toward the group that was taking their potential party member off to the side to "talk" With his hands still behind his back, Tolan lightly leapt from the ship landing on the gangplank, after landing on the plank of wood, the rouge hopped onto the dock.

Without a word he darted behind Morgan as she walked.
Dice Stealth:
D20+5 (1)+5 Total = 6
(6) He was listening to them making sure everything was alright. In his experience it was never a good sign when someone was escorted alone, especially when they are outnumbered.

As they walked, Tolan was not paying attention to where he was walking, his foot caught a bit of rope and ended pulling a bucket of fish from behind a local fisherman. He froze in place looking at the armed guards with a foolish grin on his face. "Oops..."

OOCI'm dropping the secret text because it's not that important and I assume you'd all rather see the exchange, but only Gil can hear it.
A Single Step

Schon immediately catches Tolan’s weak attempt to eavesdrop. “This some business of yours?” she asks him rhetorically. “You have questions for me, I’ll be back on deck shortly.” Once Tolan leaves, Schon listens to Morgan’s arguments.

"This isn't about gold," Schon tells Morgan, plenty loudly enough to be heard by Gil. "The Order has paid my commission, and I intend to complete this job, foremost by keeping everyone aboard safe.

“You want to try to bribe the Bitch to leave us alone?”
she mocks. “I think you’re better off trying to negotiate with a shark, but that’s your business. You do what you want on your own. I’m in charge once you set foot aboard, and every member of this crew knows it. You break my rules, and you’ll be swimming. On my ship, you don’t pray to her; you don’t even say her name. You’re lucky if I take you at all. You tell the crew that you worship the Bitch Queen, we may have a mutiny.”

Schon looks aside and exhales loudly from the exertion of controlling herself. Then she looks back to Morgan. “We clear?” she asks. “If so, you can ask my permission to board.”

Tolan nodded quickly. "Oh, ok I will just wait for you on deck then. No problem." He waited at the bottom of the gangplank for the group to return. Looking at Gil he could only give a shrug. As they were talking the hafling was trying to make sense of what they were talking about. "Who does she pray to that has this crew so spooked? I will have to find out when ever we reach our destination. I don't want to get her in trouble by asking to many questions...."

Despite the distance, Gil caught every word of Schon's tirade. Yeah, that wouldn't go over too hot with the crew. Maybe not so bad though. Can't see Umb...the Bit...Herself sinking one of her own.

He turned to Storm and shrugged. "No big thing, just..." He'd been about to say religious stuff when he remembered he was talking to a cleric. "...y'know. Like pers'nal stuff. She seems alright."

Morgan
right-aligned image

Captain Schon did not understand. How could a mere human woman, one that did not know to fear the Great Queen of the Sea, keep everybody aboard safe like that? No! It's not about gold! It's to give the Wavemother a reason to spare you! But although Morgan had been the speaker of her tribe, in front of Schon and as the captain outlawed the primordial woman's faith on her ship, the waif did not find it in her to give these thoughts a voice. And for once it was not because she was weak, it was neither shyness nor submission. Not only was Schon wrong and wicked, but it was almost as if she meant to challenge Umberlee directly. And as such, she was clearly mad. Morgan was immediately aware of multiple conflicting duties. She had vowed to herself to care for The Journey, but also her conscience now told her that as the speaker and one who held the words, she mustn't leave Schon to her delusions. But as her deep-green eyes spotted the captain's repressed ire and her remorseless imperiousness, the primordial cleric understood fully that any contradiction would most likely be met with hate, and in all likelihood also with a prohibition for Morgan to join the voyage at all. Must I leave them to their fate?!

Put on the spot like this, a strange turmoil took place inside the expressionless water genasi. As chieftain of her ship, Schon was postured to wield right and might on this wooden vessel that had been designated as her domain. Yet it was a domain so small and puny, that if Umberlee ever looked the way of The Journey this ship would be swallowed so surely from the ocean's surface that Morgan had no doubt that Schon's lack of strength and wisdom would grant her the end that she seemed to be seeking. When the primordial woman had meant to board the vessel, she had taken it as proper to defer to the ship's chieftain since she would be their guest. But as the mere guest that Morgan would be, Schon's law held no claim over the daughter of the wave's actions. A choice... Between following Umberlee or following... a mad landwalker? As the realization over this choice already started to drive desperation into Morgan's heart, she suddenly remembered her last adventure and how her packmate Shield had presented her with a similar dilemma. The sentient warforged had taught her how a lack of wisdom would rob one of the flexibility to coexist with the law of another. And the memory of that interaction had never been more relevant to Morgan than now. This is the moment... But now it is me!

The tribal genasi had dreaded that she might be put into a situation like this herself. But since the possibility had existed in the back of her mind for a few months now, it now helped her realize that what Schon asked of her could be viewed from a slightly different perspective. And this was what gave Morgan the sudden inspiration for what she was supposed to do. Neither my faith nor Umberlee's supreme strength would weaken if I were to keep them to myself... If that is Captain Schon's only demand... I might be able to care for the lives on this ship despite her willful ignorance. As her heart was beating quickly, Morgan's entire inner monologue and subsequent epiphany had happened only over the span of a few seconds after Schon had finished speaking and was now indignantly awaiting the cleric's answer. "I... understand..." There was no facial expression on the primordial woman's mien, but Morgan felt a small hope that the determination that had made her seek her next adventure would not be undone as quickly as she had been made to fear. "Do I... have your permission to board?"

After a mildly dramatic pause, Schon responds simply: “Granted. Jersey!” she calls out to the nearest crewmember, “show this lady where to stow her gear.” The captain nods to the two Order guards, who return the gesture before departing the dock, as Schon herself follows Morgan up the gangplank.

Morgan
right-aligned image

Having received the captain's permission to board, Morgan was released from the uncomfortable conversation but her trepidation wasn't done. Schon was going to forbid the divine connection that Umberlee's own relied on most to support her abilities as a healer, and if the captain's notion to spite the Wavemother openly was reckless or downright mad, Morgan saw no way to move forward without abandoning her heart. And as she had learned in her time in the West Marches, as cooled as it was by the touch of the deep, it was her own heart that was the most important thing which she had to keep sound and strong to even dream of fulfilling her purpose in these unforgiving lands. Morgan's green eyes sought the other adventurers that awaited her when she walked up to the plank, but the primordial woman's interaction with Schon had robbed her of the majority of hope that she had seen for this voyage when she had first tried to board the ship. The cleric's shoulders weren't slumped since she had to show strength, but as she stared ahead blankly she felt the added weight on her back plenty. "My name is... Morgan..." She settled her backpack on the floor next to the railing and as her green hair floated around her face, she came up to be just at eye level with what she knew was called a halfling. "Please... Protect these belongings for me... Short for a while... I shall return shortly..." And then she removed a bundle of jingling coins from her bag that she wrapped in her blue arms. It looked like a lot of coins from the size of it, even if it was veiled. And after Morgan had received any sign of confirmation from any of the three adventurers, she took a leap off the railing and into the water, together with the coins.

For a bit more than three hours, Morgan remained unseen from The Journey and when she eventually resurfaced, the bundle in her arms had become a whole lot smaller. When the water genasi boarded the ship once more, she didn't explain to the adventurers voluntarily about how she had left all her gold in a hidden chasm on the ground of Westhaven's harbor. A small, secret space that Morgan had found during her last few months of downtime. As far as Morgan knew, there were no underwater shrines or ritual sites in this area, so to fulfill the offering like her forebearer had taught her she had simply chosen the chasm to hide her offering, and also to confound anybody that would dive after her to find the gold which was now meant to appease Umberlee. Even as a speaker that was bereft of her people, she had remembered well, but still taken long to weave an extensive prayer to the strongest being in the sea. And although Morgan had never asked for a ship to be granted save passage before, she still tried to find the right words in her kind's aquan tongue that might reach the fickle goddess that Umberlee was to convince her that Captain Schon did not need to learn her folly by the death of everyone aboard. Though just to be sure, the professed life cleric kept Schon's existence out of her prayer at all.

When Morgan appeared back before the adventurers, the seawater was swiftly dripping down her smooth skin as if it didn't like to stick to her at all, and then she was dry from the looks of it in mere moments. The bundle that she had left with had shrunken in size considerably, but it was still in her arms. When the eerily expressionless woman then opened the folds in presentation for her future packmates, all three adventurers saw the wealth of two and a half dozen berries which had replaced the coins, the berries' hue an uncommonly deep blue and with plump, fleshy bodies that looked ripe. "I... am usually a healer. But for this journey, I will only be allowed to pray for the guidance of Silvanus and Istishia..." Morgan spoke to the three men in a soft, almost whispering voice, and she held the berries gently in front of them. "Please... each of you, take six... They were grown by me, wrest from the combined divinity of the deities I worship. They will heal you, would even nurture you if you so needed it. I will give my all for you, even should the waves want to take you. And you all can stand witness that I will prevail no matter what law is imposed to hinder me in that duty..." Morgan had stared at the adventurers while she had talked so fervently, and her full lips had trembled slightly as if she was filled with a deep emotion that wasn't perceivable from just her blank expression or her smooth voice. And after one blink, with almost shyness she turned away from the adventurers and then gave a long, lingering look in the direction of Captain Schon who was somewhere apart from their little group on deck.

"Sure thing, Miss Morgan. Gil Taverner, glad ta help." She seemed a bit distracted, understandable after her back-and-forth with the captain, and it wasn't as if he had anything better to do. Gil watched with mild interest as she gathered up coin, then wrinkled his nose when she dived into the water; rainwater ran downhill by nature and took all a town's crud with it. Between that and fisherfolk cleaning their catches on the docks, the harbor didn't make for an inviting swimming hole. He'd bought an enchanted cap that allowed breathing underwater and had stuck his head in a bucket to make sure it worked, but that didn't mean he'd want to try breathing harbor water. He turned to Tolan and Storm. "Fancy that. Takes all kinds, they say."

Gil settled in along the railing, watching the life of the docks and the sailors readying the Journey. He was a big fan of other people working, much more so when he wasn't expected to participate. Time passed quickly until Morgan returned, apparently from shopping for underwater blueberries. The prospect of eating anything that grew under the docks made Gil's stomach turn over, but it didn't do to be rude.

"Thanks, Morgan, awful kind of ya, 'preciate it. Silvanus, yah? My Da's folk are real big on him. Ma's too, I guess, except Rillifane Rallathil who's like elf Silvanus 'cept he's a tree and Silvanus ain't. Somethin' like that anyway." He tucked the berries away in his belt pouch. The bit of small talk exhausted much of Gil's knowledge of theology; he'd been told far more, often at great and detailed length while visiting Wodehame, but it made his eyes glaze over and very little had actually stuck. "So yah, tribe, right? We look out fer each other, that's how it is. Want a hand with yer stuff? Cabins're just down this hatch. Who's Istishia?"

Tolan was waiting at the end of the gangplank waiting to see how the conversation was going between Morgan and Schon. Things were going to slowly for him as the two stared each other down. The halfling was waiting impatiently with crossed arms tapping his foot. When the group finally started to come back his way, he gave them a smile and started up the plank. There he turned and waited for them. "I hope all is well."

As Morgan walked up the plank and handed Tolan her pack, the halfling grabbed hold of it and was struggling to stand upright with it being almost as big as his was. "Oh, Um sure I will just." He waddled carrying the pack as best he could making his way over to where the others had placed their things. With a thud he dropped it on the deck. "Hope there was nothing fragile in there. Before he could turn around there was a splash as Morgan jumped over board. Tolan spun on his heels and looked for her. "Wait where did?..."

As the time passed, Tolan was walked up and down the ship, climbing the ropes of the mast. When Morgan came back from her undersea adventure, the rogue greeted her with a smile. "Welcome back, Morgan right? I am glad to see your return." As she handed each of them her gift, the halfling held them in his hands and sniffed them. He had never seen anything like this before. "So we just eat them?" With a shrug he put them in a small bag on his belt.

When he figured out what was going on he grabbed onto the dragonborn's tail and tried his best to pull him, but the 40 lbs halfling did very little to stop the cleric, he was being dragged across the deck of the ship. "Wait! Stop! We need you! We can get through this together." He looked to the others. "Uh guys a little help here?! Maybe from the water lady???"
