IC Mind the Gap
Lured by talk of easy treasure and fascinating puzzles, Galen and Percy decide to brave the Door. Some adventurers who have gone before warn the pair that the door will shut behind them.

Stepping through appears to be a bit ridiculous as when the pair go through the Door, they seem to be merely in the Tavern. However, things change when the Door shuts.

For Percy, the light goes out. The room is dark. Galen can see in the darkness and so can dimly see the space. For it is a room about 20ft wide by 40ft long. The room is bisected by a Gap twenty feet wide and twenty feet deep, running the room's width. On the other side of the gap is a small pedestal with a box and a door beyond that. When Galen looks back, the door through which the two had walked has been replaced with a blank wall.

OOC
Notes, sometimes, I will ask the PCs to be specific about what gear they have in hand before opening the door. In this case, it's not terribly important.
Light: Dark
Terrain: Flat Stone with a 20 ft drop; climbing the stone is Moderate Difficulty (DC 15)

It felt strange to walk through the door in the middle of the tavern floor. Honestly Galen didn’t think much would happen and initially nothing did until he heard the wooden door close behind them. The instant is clacked shut the tavern interior vanished leaving Galen and his new companion Percy into a dark space.

It took a few moments for Galen’s eyes to adjust to the sudden change in lighting. While the elf took in the rectangular room he asked an obvious question, which he most likely already knew the No, I bet Percy just sees a dark roomanswer to, of his human companion, “ Can you see in here Percy? It was Percy wasn’t it?” trying to break the ice.

Galen goes on to describe the room to Percy; the trench in the floor and the pedestal with the box on the other side.
Galen walks cautiously up to the edge of the trench and looks to see if there is anything at the bottom. He then goes back and gets very close to the wall where the door should have been to look for any writing or symbols.

Draining the last of his cup and setting it on a table; Percy stepped through the door with his new companion. A wide grin stretched across his face in excitement of this curious door. Even more pleased as they stepped through it to find it apparently nothing at all. As the door swung shut however, Percy muttered a low curse as all light seemed to vanish suddenly. Unaware at first of the change of the room the human instead sighed and took a knee as he began to rummage for a torch.

He paused as his companion spoke."No sorry." Though at the confirmation of his name Percy took on a more upbeat tone. "It is Percy! Galen correct? Pleased to have your partnership here huh?" The man chuckled softly and waved his hand in front of his eyes.

After a moment he would produce one of his torches and set it alight with a bit of flint from his tinderbox.

Percy remained stationary for a moment as he got his bearings and let his eyes sweep around the hopefully easier to see room. Finally finding his companion close to the wall they came from, sans a door he could have sworn they entered through. He held the torch aloft to share the light, but left the sharp eyed elf to the task and instead walked closer to the trench and looked across the gap. "Anything interesting there friend?"

Guys, sometimes the GM will have an Ability check (e.g., Perception) take an action (i.e., one per turn/post). Also, some GMs may want to roll secretly for ability checks where the result is not immediately obvious - e.g., Perception is nothing there or did your character not see anything. In this case, I went on and rolled here to speed things up a bit. I gave the two of you advantage.

Also, note the difference light can make. For Darkvision, Dark is Dim and Dim is -5 Perception. The 13 Perception would have been 8. Finally, not the radius of the torch (20ft Bright,20ft Dim). For Percy, the other side of the Gap is in Dim Light. For Galen, the 20ft Dim is like Bright light.

IC Mind the Gap
Percy lights the torch, which gives Galen a better look at the other side of the Gap. Galen sees a series of short columns about a half foot high about six inches around and two feet apart on the other side. Looking closer, he sees a similar set of columns on this side, and then the columns are set on top of a short wall that is about another six inches high. Galen suspects that there might be a similar wall on the other side.

“Yes it is,” Galen confirmed his name to Percy.

Finding nothing of help on the wall behind them Galen returned his attention to the trench in the middle of the room. “That certainly makes a big difference. I didn’t see these short walls before,” Galen motioned at the half columns. “I am assuming the goal is to get to the other side. Do you have another torch we could light and try to throw to the other side to give us some light over there? Unless you want to jump with a torch in your hand or jump into the dark half of the room without any light.”

He went on,” It would also safely let us see if there was any barrier or something stopping us from jumping the gap.”

While the torch helped illuminate the room, it did little to make Percy aware of this rooms tools. Relying on Galens description and gestures he took a moment to be thankful for the company. Percy moved to the half columns and rubbed his chin thoughtfully before turning to respond. " I do. Lets see..." With another shrug of his shoulder he set to withdrawing another torch, spending half a thought of the flint before remembering the still burning torch.

Percy brought the two torch tips together to light the new one. Averting his eyes from the glowing yellow red as he waited for it to catch. "These columns are interesting. Maybe we could snag the far ones with a rope?" Percy nodded towards the far columns. The monk walked to their edge of the trench and peered over; then Percy hauled his arm backwards before attempting to hurl the lit torch over the gap onto the other side. Percy had some experience throwing objects but normally ones meant to be thrown, so he could only hope it would clatter on the opposite side of the gap and shine more light on the room.

Yep. Throw the torch. Improvised weapons is an area where the GM has a bit of discretion. Is throwing a torch equivalent to throwing a dagger or Dart?

A rope or maybe a lasso is another interesting improvised piece of gear. Of course, a grappling hook would catch on the low ledge. The helpful thing about a rope is that the character can throw it repeatedly. There is even some rule (RAW or RAI ?) about repeated attempts being successful and so more a matter of time than rolling.

The rope will eventually succeed in being lassoed around one of the short columns. You can assume eventual success. However, each character will need to make an acrobatics check for crossing the rope. The exact DC and the falling results will depend on how each character chooses to cross the rope.

IC Mind the Gap
Percy tosses the torch onto the other side. The range is a bit of stretch (long-range for a Dart). However, the target is a 20x20 pad of stone. So the torch lights up the other side. The light confirms what Galen had seen; the short columns and the short edge/wall are on both sides of the gap. There is nothing special in either of the dark corners.

“Hmmm, well that was less dramatic than I thought it was going to be. Was kind of expecting it to hit some invisible barrier or something to come up out of the ditch to grab it. Well I guess the most straight forward way is probably the best. Wasn’t expecting to go adventuring while in the tavern so I didn’t bring nearly any gear with me. Do you have any rope Percy? I bet we could try to lasso one of the posts over there and shimmy across and or climb into and out of the trench,”Galen suggested.

“Unless you don’t have any rope and we’ll have to get even more creative.”

Percy breathed a sigh of relief to see the torch clatter on the other side. The path seemed a little easier now.

" I do, just blew into town today. " Percy confirmed, handing the torch to his companion before removing the rope from his pack and fashioning it into a lasso. Standing at the edge of the trench it took him a few tries but eventually he snagged a far column. Pulling on it a few times to test it before tying it off to its opposite column. " I think I prefer the shimmy idea myself, over climbing. I suppose if I fall it'll be a shorter drop that way..." Percy would then kick the remainder of the rope over the trenches edge; hoping to make any return after a fall just a bit easier.

Nodding to his companion Percy approached the edge of the trench, grabbed hold of the rope and swung out over the emptiness of the gap below. Choosing to not spend time dwelling on the depths; the monk brought his ankles up to knit over the rope as well to help balance his weight and shift his gaze up towards the stone ceiling. Then doing his best to remain calm, the monk attempted to make his way across the rope.

@Silverfeathers, you will need to make an athletics or acrobatics check (DC 10) for Galen to get across on the rope.
@DancingSkeleton, DC 15 Acrobatics for Percy to get back up on the rope. Then another DC10 check to complete the traversal. Alternatively, Percy can take 1d6 of falling damaging, then a DC check to climb out with the piece of rope in the gap, then re-attempt the DC 10 crossing.

IC
Percy looked at the rope suspended between the posts. He was experienced with climbing ropes, and this should have been straightforward. However, the rope began to sway as the dextrous monk got to the middle. During one sway, Percy slipped and found himself hanging from the rope.

Now the Monk faced a dilemma, try and re-mount the rope, with a possible slip and fall, or drop into the gap and then use the rope to climb back up and start all over.

Galen nodded approval at Percy as the man took a few tries to lasso a pillar but was eventually successful. The elf watched calmly as the monk secured the rope on this side before starting to inch his way out like an upside down caterpillar.

All seemed to be going well until Percy was about half way across and the swaying of his movement caught up to him. The rope was swaying violently from side to side causing the monk to lose his grip leaving him hanging. Galen reached down to the steady the rope (not necessarily stop the movement but slow it) for his companion hoping to make it a bit easier to regain his position.

“Easy Percy, You’re more than half way,” he tried to reassure the man since was upside down in a darkened room.

Percy cursed as the rope swayed and he found himself nearly tumbling into the pit beneath. Feeling the rope bend beneath his grip the monk took a few breaths to calm himself. Ignoring the pulling burning sensation in his arms as they supported his weight from the bending rope.

" Thank you Galen, let me try to.. "

Waiting until he could find a stiller moment, mentally thanking Galen again for trying to calm the rope, Percy attempted to pull himself back up onto the rope so he could continue to cross. The situation had gotten trickier but he'd rather still try to best the rope, and if he fell well... Nothing ventured nothing gained.

@Players, this is a lesson in the benefits of Help (Advantage), wherever you can take advantage of another player helping you.

In this case, Advantage is the difference between Percy making it across and falling into the Gap. The fall is less than 20ft fall means 1d6 of damage and then an attempt to climb back out.

Percy w/Adv for Help from Galen - 20

IC Mind the Gap
As Percy attempts to remount the rope, the rope sways again under the monk. However, this time Galen helps Percy by steadying the rope. Percy re-mounts the rope and continues to the rope, and can reach the other side.

Galen, the Elven Ranger, makes it seem easy to get across.

Reaching the other side, the pair find a small chest bolted to the stone pillar. The Chest is not locked and does not have any traps. Opening the chest, the pair find twenty-five gold and a healing potion. The healing potion is marked, "Use only on this side of the door."

The pair note that when the chest is opened, a door appears in the wall.

OOC
Treasure: A first-level adventure yields Squared(Average Level) * #adventurers * 52. That would be 117 gold for the two of you (1st and 2nd Level). I'll be rewarding the gold per room (117/5 ~ 23.4). Rewarding the treasure per room lets me adjust the treasure for players being added and dropped.

The Healing Potion is only good within the Adventure (Within the Door). Also, I recommend Healing Kits (5 gold) for all adventurers. Guarantees stabilizing someone unconscious.

Nimbly crossing the rope, Galen joined Percy on the other side quickly. “Sorry I made that look so easy. But we made it across unharmed. Would you like to do the honors of seeing what is in the chest,’ the elf asked motioning with his arm and hand at the little pedestal.

He nodded approvingly at the item inside. “Makes sense we can’t take it with us outside this place. Do you want to hold onto it and the gold Percy since you have a bag? I am really not prepared for adventuring inside the tavern. Next time I will bring more of my gear,’ Galen sighed to himself at his lack of forethought about going through the door. What should have expected? A walk through a meadow or the like. A magical door that magically appears inside a tavern should clue you in to be prepared.
