IC A Straight Shot
Rommanus continued to crawl forward. The brave - foolhardy? - Rogue launched an arrow at the illuminated Kobold but missed.

Teema, having convinced Rommanus that things were less dangerous on the ground, popped up and began flying after Hex. The Blood Harpy made a short amount of progress before mocking the Kobold gunner and dropping prone.

Hex continued his charge forward, sure that he was invulnerable to the worst that the Kobolds could do. Unfortunately, he failed to detect the fine wire strung across the corridor at chest level. The fine wire released a framework of spears that swung down from the ceiling. Unfortunately, the dextrous Half-Elf was unable to avoid the impaling spears. The spears restrained Hex's movement, making him a target for the Kobold gunner. However, Teema had mocked the Gunner and shaken their confidence. So, the Heavy Crossbow bolt flew harmlessly past Hex.

The Kobold seeing that the odds were against it, advanced in the retrograde to a more advantageous position. In other words, it bolted through a Kobold-sized hole in the wall.

After removing Hex from the impaling spear trap (or removing the impaling spear trap from him), the players investigated the rubble wall. There was a nifty treasure chest with 160 gold behind the wall. There was a heavy crossbow with 20 bolts. Additionally, there was a Bull-eye lantern with six flasks of oil.

Hex
right-aligned image
(Click for Sheet) @Sarankan Loganathan
Hex grunted dramatically as he pulled the last of the spears from his person, then flung it on the floor and watched the last kobold scampering away into the kobold-hole.

"Ghh... Hrm, not quite as pleasant as a bite from a friend, eh, Teema? I do think you saved me from further bodily abuse there, so you have my thanks, dear sonorous harpy!"

Looking at the loot the kobolds left behind, he said: "Well, shall we head back towards the Door?"

And with that he divvied up the bag of gold and took the heavy crossbow, intending it as a gift to the barkeep.

Teema
right-aligned image

A small shudder ran through the energetic harpy when Hex confirmed that this was just the kind of moment when biting and taste testing these kobolds was not only allowed but even encouraged. However, before she was able to bridge the last bit of distance and give in to the nagging thrill that had been on the back of her thoughts for a while now, a salvo of force blasts from Hex obliterated two of the kobolds and together with it the morale of the remaining one that even missed his shot after hearing the magically enhanced harpy shriek. Before she could ever fly forward to indulge in a final assault that could have resulted in gratifying her interest in the kobold's blood, Teema was distracted by the spear trap which had impaled Hex in place and so instead she swiftly swooped in and tried to help him get free of the trap as best she could. "Oh no! That looks really bad, Hex! You're bleeding!" In between her attempts to help her friend to dislodge from the spears, the fair avian woman couldn't avoid getting a bit more of the half-elf's blood onto her white, feathery costume. Hex appeared to be taking the physical abuse from the trap rather lightly, much more so than the petite harpy would have, but right then Teema had to split her attention between her friend's wounded state and the red that was jarringly standing out against the white of her feathers. Oh...

"Here, Hex! This healing potion is one that Percy gave me! Use it to heal yourself!" Even as she handed the magician her potion, Teema's lucent eyes flickered from worry about her friend to the blood on her taloned feathers and back. Finally she brought one of her tainted wings up to take just a little nip, but then her eyes widened a little further and she felt caught while Hex was staring right at her. The blood harpy took a little gulp, flushing a light pink and turning her expression into a frown. Without ever introducing himself, the human man whom they had tried to rescue from an unfortunate death inside of the Door had uncovered a treasure chest with lots of gold, and now Hex had already divvied up a portion of it into a bag as he was now looking straight at the harpy that had once more gotten engrossed with breaking the great taboo. "I didn't mean to!!" Teema's voice was almost a mere squeak as her embarrassment was blaring for all to hear. Following a final impulse, she quickly snatched the packaged gold that had been prepared for her, and without allowing any time to talk things out, the flushing harpy bounded into the air and made the quickest escape out of the Door that she had ever made. A few days later she would meet Hex back at the tavern and act like it had never happened, but right then she flew out of the Inn on your Shield and took off to wherever she had her current roost in Westhaven. She never even learned Rommanus's name.

The Door had taken the adventurers to many locations. This time, the Door appeared to open out of a large crypt. As usual, the Crypt Door closed. A full moon shone down on the area but merely accentuated the darkness. Those with Darkvision could dimly see that graves littered the rolling terrain. The headstone created pools of darkness - providing both cover and concealment.

The group could hear an eerie tone all around them. Perhaps it was merely whistling amongst the headstones, or maybe it was something else.

A dirt path ran crypt to a gate on the Graveyard's edge- a distance of 180 feet.

It took about a second for Makktar to accept that he was in a completely different place and time than when he started on the other side of the door. When he accepted this fact, his knees buckled and he fell towards the ground. He landed on his outstretched hands and vomited into the dirt.

Makktar took a moment for a few deep breaths and then stood up, wiping flecks of spittle and spew off his chin. This is...what?

Do any of you know where we are? Makktar asked his new compatriots. And what is that sound? It has me unsettled. How do we get out of here?

Makktar peered down the road towards the edge of the graveyard.

Before the DoorDrips-at-Night had entered the Tavern quietly. This was a place for folks to go to find coins, and that's exactly what the Tabaxi pirate was after. Drip wasn't actively sneaking and would be noticed by the patrons with keen eyes even if he was. Instead, he was simply avoiding making the sort of Splash! Splash? Get it? We're doing water jokes today.splash that new adventurers often leaned into. Not that he still wasn't paying attention for the potential to make some money. Quite the contrary... his ears were wide open. Drip heard about this door that might slake the thirst of his parched coin purse. When he saw the group walking through the door, he casually followed them in. After all, one of the great rules of larceny is to always act like you belong when trespassing uninvited.
Ooh! A Graveyard!
right-aligned image
It isn't the first time that Drips-at-Night has found himself seeking riches in a graveyard. Some might say something about the dead not needing the things they were buried with... but ghosts and skeletons tend to disagree. He takes a few sauntering steps, reaching his arms over his head to pull his elbows into a languid stretch. Might as well get warmed up before the hammer falls. Drip looks over to Half-Orc and says in a low voice, "First time being teleported? You might not have long to get your wits about ya... so hurry and get your legs under ya. If you use a weapon... you might want to get it in yer hand."

The Tabaxi looks around while Makktar stands and they begin to take in the graveyard. Drip's opalescent cat eyes glint eerily in the dark. "This looks like the kind of place where tha dead lay restless. I wouldn't count on that sound being a prankster, either." The pale moon did not do much to reveal their surroundings. Maybe they would get lucky and notice something valuable... or dangerous. Perhaps Both? "I suppose we'll get out of here after the work is done. Now to wait for the others to arrive and figure out what work that might be."

Grigor steps through The Door and into the area of the Crypt.

“Ho, fellow adventurers. I'll have my sword ready to defend each of you. Sorry I'm not of much good in the stealth department. This all reminds me of a skirmish my contingent had some years back. Not much unlike near a crypt such as this one. Of course, we just faced a bunch of blokes with maces and axes. I fear we stand to face much worse here, my friends.”

Grigor readies his sword and moves to the front in order to give his friends the best defense possible.

moving through the door with his new liantern in hand and a health potion from the meatshiled he had taken cover with earlier rommanus stumbles through the next door nearly tripping over a gravestone. "woah, these door really move a man." Seeing an ogre and a large cat rommanus moves towards the most normal looking one and even offered to keep him safe for free. the last meet shield had given him free loot so perhaps this one would as well.

"Greatings" roomanus reaches his arm out to grigor. "seems you've got the sword and i the stealth. we should work together. I'll go first but keep within short distance of you. when there's trouble and there usually is ill have you use your sword. so ah what do you say mate care to explore together?"

Zolan & Esmeria
right-aligned image

After Grigor and Zolan had made their acquaintance at the Inn on Your Shield and had decided to brave the fantastical Door together, the survivor of the rumored habitat called Xyco found himself surrounded by further unfamiliar voices than he had not expected and rather swiftly he lit a torch and quickly revealed the surrounding area that had been too dark to scan for human eyes without a light source. "Esmeria? Ah! There you are!" The silent beauty cast a soft smile at the adventuring party, and then both she and Zolan coursed their gaze across the scenery as they searched the crypts and headstones for any points of interest, knowing full well that the Door was meant to challenge all those who entered it. There was an eerie sort of tone that added to the spooky ambiance, and while Zolan searched his memory for any recognition of such a cadence, he also further grew aware of all those additional people who he hadn't imagined he would be on this outing with. It verily made no difference to him whatsoever.

"Don't fret, orcish fellow! It does not matter where we are! T'is the Door! Place or time does not matter here, only the challenge that will be put forth any moment now! That's how it goes!" Zolan had in fact never set a step through the magical doorway himself, yet he recounted the stories that he had heard without feeling the need to distinguish how they hadn't happened to him. "You as well, my good cat fellow. We do not need to assume that any reinforcements will ever arrive! We're now pitted against whatever awaits us in this here "room" with only those who we are at the moment. Those who challenge a room together always arrive at the same time, and none will follow in that same room. At least this is how it has shown itself to be, empirically!"

As Zolan was talking to his new companions enthusiastically, his voice was surprisingly barely muffled by the strange, white mask which was firmly covering the front of his skull. He listened with appreciation to Grigor of House Gersken as the blonde human declared how he was fully ready to defend the party with sword and armor, and it didn't phase Zolan in the least that Grigor was perturbed by his lack of stealthiness. After all the group had started chatting amicably just as soon as they had arrived, and with Zolan's torch burning brightly in the dark there was no reason to assume that any native element on this graveyard wasn't already plenty aware of the adventurers' presence. There was one further human wearing a bandana that had never introduced himself and had ended up in this room without Zolan ever meeting him before, and while he pronounced his desire to collaborate with Grigor in the capacity of a scout, Zolan interjected himself in their handshake and blithely clapped the sailor-looking fellow on the back with his shield arm, his other hand holding up the torch in a way that it wouldn't become a fire hazard.

"I assumed we'd be a party consisting of only those who headed through the Door together, but it seems the mischievous magic of this artifact had something else in mind. My name is Zolan, and my beloved is called Esmeria! I assume we'll be thrust into murderous battle any moment now, but we might yet have a moment to introduce ourselves first! What are your names, and are there any folks in Westhaven which I should inform upon your untimely demise? We've not yet known each other even a minute, but I will do that for you, should you perish!" At the same time as Zolan was making magniloquent conversation with his new group of fellow adventurers, Esmeria had stood a bit to the side and hadn't made a single noise while leaving conversing to the male companionship. However once Grigor positioned himself to the front and gestured that he was going to be their vanguard, the beautiful dancer in silks began to wander past him, and on lithe, gracile legs overtook him with an elegant, yet slightly playful gait that looked somewhat choreographed. Before Zolan could ever learn Rommanus' name, Esmeria took the role of scout upon herself, and when Zolan glanced down the path which she was already moving ahead on, he demonstratively called after her. "Where are you going, sweetheart?" At that Esmeria spun around, her silks and dark mane twirling after her, and with a mere smile and wave she resumed moving forward a good distance ahead of Grigor. "Ah, don't mind her, fellow adventurers. She is like that from time to time. Rest assured, nothing in this life will ever lay hands on her. She is nigh untouchable in her grace. Now, what were your names? Also, can anybody hold my torch? I'd like to arm myself with a blade, should hostilities arise!"

The party looked around in surprise at this incarnation of The Door. While Zolan had never stepped through The Door, the canny Artificer had done his research. He came through with a torch casting light upon the scene. The entire experience reminded him of the Eternal Explorer's combat simulations.

Everyone looked around. However, Drip spotted one of the anomalies - the dirt along the path where Esmerelda was walking (about 20 ft from the group) was disturbed. Thanks to Zolan's torch, Drip could see another patch about 40 ft from the party.

However, it was the skeleton emerging from a grave that drew everyone's attention.

Grigor readies his sword and moves up to the front in order to vie his friends the best defense possible. “Easy, friends. A skeleton up ahead. I will handle it with swift shifting steel!” He means to say, he'll attack it with his longsword of course. Oh, Grigor, always one for word play! Ever observant, and ever seeking to defend fellows in battle!

Grigor readies his sword and moves south towards the skeleton. Then he brings his trusty sword down with a warrior's bent and fury!

What a crew! There are at least two heavies, maybe three. There is also someone else with a similar naval sense about them... and something about those tattoos seemed familiar. There might be a reputation that Drip has yet to put to the name that has, so far, remained unspoken. Well, hopefully, the man at least knows his way around a trap.

Drip looks at the oddly armored and grandiloquent figure standing here in a graveyard with an almost too-beautiful-to-be-real companion and grins. His lips curl hard to one side in a smirk that lacks malice. "Of course, fellow Zolan... and yes, I'll take that torch for you. It would be good for both of us if you were as battle-ready as possible, after all. Many know me as Drips-at-Night... though you are free to call me Drip. I believe your lady friend is standing on a trap? Or perhaps another skeleton, soon to be unburied. The soil has been disturbed in an unnatural way, there...." He gestures with the Torch at the spot where Esmeria is standing, and then at the other spot twenty feet further down the path. "And there is another spot like it, not too far beyond."

Taking the torch, he saunters several feet to get a better view of the approaching skeleton. Muttering under his breath a bit, he points in the direction of the skeleton and moves his finger in the air as though drawing an invisible rune. Suddenly, a blast of force rocks the undead... though not enough to destroy it outright. Still, he has lent a hand.

Off-kilter
Makktar's awareness of the situation slowly rose as he became more aware of his companions.

They all seem pretty ready for this madness. Did I miss a meeting?

He turned towards Drip and then Zolan at the mention of teleportation. You said teleportation? But how?

Words Makktar hears but doesn't register
Undead...skeleton...skeleton...

Makktar remained blissfully unaware of the shambling skeleton as he turned to study the crypt. Surely we can work out where we are by studying this crypt a little closer. Death rituals vary from culture to culture.

Zolan & Esmeria
right-aligned image

Behind his mask, Zolan felt a distant twinge of memory that was never replicated by the artificial facial expression that he was incessantly showing to everybody else. It had been quite a while now since he had left Xyco behind, the birthing ground of his new identity after his memory loss. Combat simulation? The two words simply popped into the freshly made adventurer's thoughts, and although he wasn't quite sure in what context that term had been relevant to him in his former life, it was fairly easy to extrapolate the meaning of the two words combined together into a singular expression. Why, yes. The Door is selective of its challenges, limited in scope, and inexplicably designed to be beaten in a way that will reward its challengers. Like exercises! Simulated combat. Why did I think of that just now? Never mind that. If anything, even before entering the Door for the first time Zolan had already listened to stories and rumors and determined the Door's challenges as exercises in adventuring that would help him get into the swing of things for whence he and Esmeria would venture out beyond the walls of Westhaven. He didn't spend a single thought on what kind of benevolent being might have put this magical portal into the Inn on Your Shield to treat those who challenged it to bite-sized adventuring. To date, Zolan hadn't heard of any who had actually fallen to the dangers that awaited behind the Door, yet he wasn't going to rely on any assumptions of providence behind the artifact's existence. In a way this was only sport, but the possibility of danger was what made it exciting and worthwhile. Plus supposedly one could reap gold rewards. Hmm... No danger in sight yet. But it can only be a moment.

When Drips-at-Night gracefully accepted the outreached torch and introduced himself as well as possible traps on the path ahead, Zolan regarded the tabaxi with the emulation of a smile on his mask, before he turned back to look for the disturbed earth that had been pointed out to him. In the background the orcish fellow was still making disoriented comments, and the survivor from Xyco determined that he must have passed the Door without any kind of foreknowledge of what he had to expect from it. It was unfortunate for the orc to stumble into danger like this, but the backpack he wore suggested him to be more than a civilian. So when the skeleton suddenly emerged, Zolan determined that further explanation could wait and that it was now time for action. "Careful, honey! There are undead unearthing themselves!" Esmeria stood where she had last waved at the party, apparently too perplexed by this development to know what to do with herself. But somehow she didn't look particularly frightened even upon the revelation of undead and Zolan called after Drip a little more quietly as the feline sailor was already starting to saunter on ahead. "Ah, she is quite the lightweight. They must not yet have noticed her." Grigor had already marched forward as well, eagerly weaving his way through the graves before he swung at the sole skeleton and missed. Considering that the best defense was a successful offensive, Zolan already was following suit on heavy boots as Drip blasted the skeleton with forceful energy. The odd artificer's free hand already went to the hilt of his combat knife, yet for the moment he simply carried the momentum of his approach and simply slammed the edge of his shield into the unsteadied skeleton's skull, splintering its bones and sending it crashing to the graveyard grounds. "Two hypotheses!" Zolan called out to his companions, seemingly unaffected that he had just finished off an undead. "First: We get swarmed and kill every undead to the last!" He turned back to those left behind on the pathway. "Second: We get swarmed and the undead brutally murder every last one of us unless we safely make our escape through the graveyard ground's gate!" Zolan sounded positively delighted by either option, based on his current tone of voice.
