IC
The Door had changed once again. A small brass embossed sign had appeared on the door - "The Multiverse has Talent (Material Plane Division) Auditions

The Adventurers went through the Door as a group, but each one appeared on a stage alone. Four Judges sat at a table, with an audience in the theatre behind. The Judges were all dressed in fine clothes - a human, an elf, a Dwarf and an Orc.

The Human appeared to be the Master of Ceremonies; as a person wandered onto the stage, the Human announced, "And let's give it up for our latest contestant."

The audience was mixed, a few cheering, while several made catcalls, the bulk sat silently.

Undeterred, the MC continued, "Contestant, please briefly introduce yourself to our audience. Tell them about yourself and what you will do to demonstrate your talent. " The MC turned to the audience, "and you lot, play nice. The rules say no throwing damage-dealing implements. "

The MC went on, "The Judges are the final arbiter of your score. However, we can be swayed by positive and negative audience reactions. Additionally, I should warn you that the Judges and the audience have short attention spans. Overly long demonstrations will be viewed unfavorably and may be cut short." A guillotine blade descended from the ceiling and passed across the stage before disappearing into the ceiling.

The MC smiled at the swinging blade. "Rember the purpose is to entertain, a spectacularly bad performance, even done with style, can be as entertaining as something well done."

Kalliópē ( AC 14 | HP 10 {of 10} ) - Door#12, Post#1 response
Kalliópē looks very carefully at the four judges, trying to see if she can ascertain anything from their accents, clothing, posture or general demeanor that may help with her upcoming act. She mutters "Corellon Guide me in seeing the judges true hearts.”"

/OOC This is prior to me deciding what to do, PM me the answer’s (ie, Insight &/or Guidance).

"T-Talent?" Clethrid asked weakly, facing the four judges. She was still feeling a bit woozy after that near-death encounter, and now here she was again, facing another death-inducing situation. Being the center of attention - on some performance stage, no less - was the very last item on a list of things Clethrid Wheatgrave wanted to do.

"Uh. I'm k-kind of new to... you know... adventuring?" she started to say, by way of introduction. Sweat started to form at the back of her neck. The cold kind. She could tell this wasn't the kind of information the judges were looking to hear.

"I-I like to sketch things sometimes on my book... I'm a frustrated artist..." That gave her an idea. "Oh!" Clethrid suddenly said, brightening. "Ice! Um... Ice sculptures! If... if you could supply me with a few buckets of water, I'd be happy to make ice sculptures for you!"

(Bowing deeply to the judges, then sweeping a graceful arm to the audience)

"Hello Multiverse! My name is Kalliópē, and today you are going to see a performance that will blow your mind!

My dance partner <I nod to the middle of the air on the stage> and I will perform a duet that promises to enchant and delight with song and dance. "

The royal shoemaker, unsmiling and self-confident as always, stands firmly on the stage.
Entertainment is nothing that interests Master Gerbo. Worse is that he actually doesn't really know what it means to people. Excellent results are his interest. And excellence is mainly based on hard work and talent. And more hard work.
Still, he silently enjoys the sudden attention. And there is a good number of potential customers sitting in front of him... However, the blade swinging over the stage, is not an additional source of joy.

His hands folded behind the back, he expressionlessly listens to the Master of Ceremonies while inconspicuously scanning the shoes of the jury and the folks in the front rows. Which is more an automatism than part of a plan.

When he has the word, he loudly calls out to the jury and audience: "I'm the royal shoemaker!"
He reaches for his component pouch and then waves about with his arms to create a Minor Illusion Cantriphologram of a very royal looking pair of shoes which appears above his head. "A creator of magical shoes!"
Further elegant hand movements and much bigger shoes appear instead. "I have royal footwear in all sizes!" Another time he reaches for his component pouch, and then raises his arms, the palms facing upwards:
"Throw your shoes at me! If you are the first to hit me, I will make you a king today!" Immediately followed by a little prayer whispered to Resistance Cantriphimself.

Gerbo implied a promise that he wasn't really able to keep. But what he has witnessed before is that crowds generally like to collectively throw items at a person in the center of attention. Especially those kind of people that like to attend events at which guillotine blades are involved. They enjoy the tossing, be it stones or dirt. Or even shoes, at least when they can't find any stones or dirt nearby. In the master's opinion, this has to be entertainment enough for the simple folks gathering in this theater.

When Clethrid announced Ice Sculptures, the MC smiled, "Fantastic! The audience has grown weary of those who merely sing and dance. However, I warn you to make haste; the audience has a short attention span."

Soon six buckets of water - each around five gallons were placed on the stage in front of Clethrid.

IC - Kalliópē
At Kalliope's announcement, the MC clapped his hands with glee, "A summoning, or perhaps merely a familiar? Regardless, it should be fun, even more so if the Demon gets out of your control. "

IC - Gerbo
The MC frowned at Gerbo's proposed performance. He went back and conferred with the other judges. Finally, the MC looked to Gerbo, "It's an unusual performance that allows audience participation. However, we'll grant it with one caveat. Our audience cannot benefit, for better or worse, from the contest's outcome. And so you cannot make them a King. However, we'll spotlight anyone who can hit you."

Kalliópē ( AC 14 | HP 10 {of 10} ) - Door#12, Post#2 response
<Kalliópē pulls her Lyre round and expertly (and quickly !) tunes it, for a bards instrument is always “nearly” tuned.>

As she does so;

"Oh.. Sorry, I forgot.. My dance partner, he’s make believe… I believe… although you may come to believe something different !"

<quietly>"Corellon guide me"

Kalliópē starts to play a jaunty and rowdy ballad of love lost and found. As she steps away, her backpack suddenly… starts to glide away, then turns and in a duet of surprising ability it hovers at the ends of her arms, sometimes shooting away, then gliding back. Kalliópē spins in response.

At the end of the short ballad the backpack “gently inserts” itself back onto Kalliópē’s back.

Kalliópē bows to the audience, the backpack detaches and also bows.

“OOC”
  • Using my new “Animated Backpack” to glide around at the end of my arms, acting like a dance partner.. as it has no legs, that should be easy…
  • Lyre gives advantage
  • Dice ”Performance”:
    2d20+6kh1 (7, 18 (keeping 18) )+6 Total = 24
  • Dice “Guidance”:
    d4 3
  • Of note, if it goes “sour” (bad roll) I will turn it into comedy, with a raunchier side and Kalliópē the “chased” one. If I roll good, it can be more serious, with “love everlasting” at the end.

666-BAD GIRL by Leonidas Sun
As soon as the buckets arrived and everything was ready, Clethrid's eyes went dark. They had a common brownish tinge to them usually, and only those who watched very closely would have seen what seemed like shadows swirling in her dark irises. Now those shadows seemed to swirl and swell all of a sudden, covering the space that occupied her pupils and eyes with an impenetrable darkness.

If there were lights on the stage where Clethrid Wheatgrave, survivor of a drowning, started to work her gifts, they were flickering disturbingly now. The... judges - if that is what they were - perhaps expected to see something entertaining when the girl mentioned 'ice sculptures'. Perhaps a quaint little tableau of humanoids enjoying drinks in a tavern, or maybe the throne of a long-forgotten king sitting contemplatively and compassionately on his subjects.

That was not what she sculpted.

Clethrid started small, at first. The part that touched the floor of the stage was only a little more than an inch in diameter. It was made of ice, sleek and exuding mists typical of the stuff in environments where the temperature varied. But the things inside of the ice looked like they were not entirely made of water. Perhaps it was... a trick of the light? Why else would there be shadows trapped inside the cold fluid, roiling and reeling and seemingly struggling to get out? The trunk - that's what it seemed to form - of the sculpture grew longer as Clethrid's delicate hands hovered inches away from her masterpiece. The trunk then became wider, accomodating a head with large, long pointed tusks jutting out of the beast's lower lip. The head and large ears followed, then not long after, legs and tail. Except the legs seemed to be... wrong... somehow. For one thing they seemed to have too many joints; like legs of an insect, all twisted and spiny-haired that ended in long sharp talons instead of the heavy things most mastodons possessed. The tail was the top-most part of the sculpture, long and gently curving upward. But was it really a... tail? There were circular shapes lined in two rows along the length of the limb. It seemed more like a... tentacle? But that couldn't be right, could it?

Was this... thing... something she had seen, before? Or was it simply the product of an overexcitable, morbid imagination?

That was not, however, the most unnerving thing the sculpture possessed. It's general form indeed resembled some creature that looked like an elephant. But aside from the strange features it possessed, the strangest by far were its eyes.

It was covered in eyes. The head, the ears, the shoulders and haunch. They glowed in the flickering light, somehow, the color of which was most definitely not the color of ice.

Eventually Clehtrid's own eyes returned to their normal amber shade, and when they did, and she saw what she had done, she nearly swooned.

"W-what... did... I-I...?"

While the Master of Ceremonies is busy talking to his fellow judges, the gnome keeps on creating a fresh hologram every few seconds, including the MC-beheaded by the guillotine blade. Also, an image of himself lapidated under a big pile of shoes, captioned by a lettering saying: The Sad End of Gerbo's Finest Shoes, followed by the orc judge nibbling on Gerbo's torn off leg. The cleric's slightly crumpy expression makes it hard to gage, if he tries to entertain the audience while waiting or if his thoughts just manifest into illusions visible to everyone.

Just before the MC turns back to the stage, Gerbo had created a barefooted audience member with a cardboard crown on his anonymous smiley face head , who cheers, while holding a shiny new pair of royal shoes in his arms. But when the MC mentions that no benefit will be granted, the happy image is replaced by the same barefooted audience member crying woefully in a spotlight beam . But Gerbo himself just obediently responses "Of course, Your Excellency" and bows to the jury.

Suddenly, spinning around, his beaver fur cape cutting the air, the shoemaker 'just another minor illusion as a wall to hide behindturns into' a monstrous 5-feet big cockroach threateningly facing the audience.

IC - Kalliópē
As the first notes of Kalliópē's Lyre floated into the theatre, the audience quieted, paying rapt attention to the Elven Bard. The woman's dancing was on par with her lyre. There were murmurs of surprise when the backpack swung out to dance with her. Then there was a bit of speculation as the backpack proved less than dexterous. However, Kalliópē adjusted her dance to be in sync with the backpack to the pleased murmurs of the crowd.

There was a moment of silence as the song and dance ended, and the backpack returned to Kalliópē's back. Then the audience broke out into a standing ovation.

Finally, the MC took the stage as the audience began to wind down. "Most impressive, many are skilled in a musical instrument, dancing, or magic. However, it takes a rare talent to be talented in all three and display that talent."

IC - Clethrid
The audience's reaction to Clethrid's sculpture was different. At first, there was a bit of a boring buzz as the bits and pieces were assembled. As the statue started to take shape, the murmurs became curious and questioning. As the statute took shape, the voice shifted to concern. At one point, the MC had to stand and quiet the audience, "It is a statue shaped of water. She is summoning nothing. The only magic is what she is using to shape the form."

The audience quieted as the various aspects of the creature that Clethrid was shaping became visible. When Clethrid stopped, the audience was dead silent, fascinated at what the Warlock had sculpted.

Finally, the MC stepped into the silence. He bowed respectfully towards Clethrid. The MC paused for a few seconds, seemingly at a loss for words. Finally, he started in,"Thank-You Lady Clethrid, for your... ah statue. The purpose of our little game is to entertain and enlighten as the contestants demonstrate their talents. Your talent is unmistakable, and your subject is ah... unique."

IC - Gerbo
The audience laughed and clapped at Gerbo's images. Even before the start, Gerbo saw the various audience members removing their shoes.

When the MC called out, "Begin". there was a literal rain of shoes pelting down on the stage. Many shoes even sailed through the illusory giant cockroach that seemed to be the target of many shoes.

However, when the MC called out "Enough", the Gnomish Cobbler stood on the stage unhit. The audience broke out into raucous applause.

IC The Figure Behind Reality
Suddenly, there was a deafening silence. It appeared to each of the three adventurers that the audience and Judges had paused in mid-action.

There was a booming which sounded like two steel gauntlets slamming together. Then came a shimmering in reality, and a figure stepped onto the stage. The figure had a heavy-set steel body and was at least seven feet tall. The sound was the figure slamming its two steel hands together. However, the figure had the head of a black-haired, pale skin Elven Beauty. Only her eyes were like the radiant light of a star.

The figure told the trio, "Well played. I've had to send more than one contestant home with injuries. Your reality limits how I can award your creative performances. However, my reality, in which you stand, allows me to do more." The figure gestured to the pack on Kalliópē's back.

"So, I shall grant each of you a boon." The figure smiled, "A boon only usable within the Door, and only a single time. Each boon is relatively minor, and will soon be eclipsed by your powers, but it may the difference between life and death in an encounter."

The figure gestured to Kalliópē, "You, my dancer, may once call upon a Single use Shield SpellShield to protect you from a strike." Then the figure gestured to Clethrid, "You my Warlock, I will grant a power your patron would bestow on you, but which you have chosen not to take. You may call upon the Armor of Agathys without using your Eldrich powers for one encounter." Then the figure turned to Gerbo, "And for you, Cleric of Rill, a power that your Deity would grant you, but of which you have chosen not to avail yourself. You may call upon a Shield of Faith for up to 10 minutes, without using a spell slot or concentrating."

With that, the three adventurers were back in the On-Your-Shield and sitting at a table. Piled in the center of the table were thirty-six gold pieces.

Kalliópē blinks in surprise at the sudden “transition” in reality. Looking down at her right wrist, a coin sized golden mark of a shield is inscribed there, a reminder of the boon granted for her performance. Looking at the others, she see’s Clethrid and Gerbo and nods…

"That was a strange encounter. Seems they liked my song and dance routine, nothing like a good love ballad to sway any audience. Safer than dodging crossbows underwater !"

666-BAD GIRL by Leonidas Sun
Her mind still reeling from her apparent abomination of a sculpture, it took a while for it to sink in Clethrid's mind that the judges were praising her.

Her.

For achieving something she didn't even have the capacity to perform before.

"I don't even... Y-you're welcome, I guess?" she managed weakly.

But the judges had already frozen. The veil had already shimmered, and Clethrid found herself staring at a strange elven lady, whose delicate facial features clashed so wildly with her heavy steel body.

Clethrid's mouth stood slightly open as she took in what the lady had said. My... patron? What's a- Is that why she felt so... different after that close encounter on the bottom of the lake? The reason why she felt so... strange half the time? Warlock? Was she really who this Lady said she was?

"Wait, please, who is-"

But the Lady and her Theater were gone. She was back at the Inn, sitting with Gerbo and Kalliope, gold coin strewn on the surface.

Clethrid managed a faint smile and a nod of agreement at what the bard had said.

"Y-you do seem to have been made to sing and dance, Miss Kalliope!" Just then Clethrid noticed the backpack. "Um. What... is that?"

Kalliópē
right-aligned image

Kalliópē listens carefully to the young human looking girl. Whilst assuredly bards made lots of noise, some also listened, and Kalliópē had spent many an hour on ship sailing the silver mists and listening to tales from other voyagers.

Clethrid certainly seemed confused and, as they say “out of water”, both metaphorically and in reality, suited as she seemed to the recent water encounter. Her mind seemed clouded and confused, no wonder she had missed their new animated companion. Strumming her Lyre absent-mindedly she mutters, almost under her breath the first stanza of Clethrid’s tune;
"Clethrid, oh Clethrid, lost and confused,
With dreams like nightmares, you feel abused.
You worship the sea, and a dark entity there,
But a glimmer of hope, shines through despair.
"
"It was a Recent gift for those doing these short ‘Door tests’."

<turning to the backpack>"Jasper, come over and show Clethrid what you are carrying.

See, three potions of Healing in there which you can borrow, and those lightweight items you might wish to offload, like Gerbo’s bedroll. And it’s an excellent dance companion, albeit not so good with it’s footwork !"

<she smiles>

"Here, give it a go. I’m sure it could even go to the bar to get you a glass of water ! Be nice to it, you never know who’s listening."

Gerbo Snorrblader, Knowledge Cleric (Level 1)
right-aligned image

Back in the Tavern, Gerbo orders soup.

The tall elf made of steel.. She made Gerbo behave like a clown on this stage. Made him ask people throwing shoes at him. Mean old shoes... Master Gerbo's pride was injured. But who is actually to blame for this scene...

He says no word. Has to do some thinking. Just grumpily fixes a napkin as a bib to cover his torso. Looks at Kalliópē and Clethrid and the backpack Jasper. Listens and spoons his soup. Just respectfully pausing for a moment during Kalliópē tune. And again, when he also discovers a small tattoo at his wrist. Shield of Faith.

Finishing his meal, he gently dabs his mouth with the napkin, carefully folding it back and arranging it neatly and tidily together with the spoon and bowl in front of him.

The shoemaker then sighs and with a stern look he seemingly reluctantly turns to the girl who was freshly revealed as a warlock:
"Miss Gleth... Clethrid, looking forward ... it is not necessarily a bad thing. Seems we don't know much about this entity... your patron, right? However, the truth is, there is good and evil associated to everybody... We should neither fear the evil nor ourselves. Utilize the powers given to you! For yourself..." The gnome suddenly hits the table with his fist, which makes the soup spoon move out of position. "Don't be a clown for anyone! A clown drowning in worn-out shoes." The old cleric lost it there for a moment. But is then quick to re-adjust the spoon back to its position and calmly continues: "Preferably, refrain from opening cosmic floodgates to drown the world. But there is other evil around us. A lot of evil. Utilize these powers to stand against it. No fear. No self-pity. Look forward. For the greater good AND for yourself, you know?"

Done. Enough. Finished talking to the youngsters. Master Gerbo jumps on his feet and looks at The Door. Focussing. He just turns back ones more, to communicate:

"Oh, by the way, this was an excellent tomato soup. I recommend it."

OOC
Door #13, Post #1

Environment
  • TBD

Notes,
  • The characters enter the Door as a group. However, each character finds themselves appearing on the stage alone.
  • This round is the performance round - see the table below to what the character can/should roll. The Higher/Better the roll,
  • All of the rules of Ability Checks (e.g., XGtE - skill and tool, Guidance) apply.
  • @Azathool, Bards have an instrument as part of their starting gear. Playing the music while dancing would give Kalliope an advantage on the roll. If you think you cannot play an instrument and dance, check out Dave Koz, the saxophonist.
  • @Goblin Man, yes Kelthrid's Bard Inspiration has expired. Note, the Minor Illusion spell creates the Illusion when you cast it, and the location of the illusion cannot move. However,

Initiative Character AC HP DV PP/PI Action Status/Notes
N/A Gerbo 16 10/10 60 14/16

IC
Gerbo had no sooner finished his soup, than the Door began flashing again signaling that it was once more available for entry.
