Hex
right-aligned image
(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

The fey elves seemed to take Hex for one of their own; a notion he did not disabuse them of. The half-drow nodded at appropriate junctures at the presented information about vanity and a contest.

"And how is this notorious Key related to the Fairest contest, exactly?"

Was the Fairest Eladrin automatically the Key? That seemed the sort of ridiculous idiocy the fair folk were known for. Hmm... Fair Folk... There's an irony there somewhere... "Teema-friend! I think I have something. Kindly tell the others. The Key might be one of the Noble Eladrin in this Party. The Fairest of them all..."

"Thank you for humoring me cousin. One more thing, how many noble Fey Elves are here and who are each of them, pray tell? And who would you pick, as the Fairest?"

Girgadan
left-aligned image

Seeing that the refreshments were 'magicked' up Girgadan's interest was piqued and he approached the nearest Eladrin to refill a table. He adjusted his pace so that the Eladrin was leaving just as the Half-Orc reached the table, pretending a little nonchalance he swiped a piece of a thing that looked like meat and the largest drink in reach.

Well I will just assume this is some kind of fat pig given the smell and juiciness - taking a bite it seemed to match his impression of a fey pig: strong taste of pig, a slight spiciness and something a little sweet. Unusual but delicious and the drink was of a fruity sour type he had never tried before that complimented the food perfectly. Girgadan suspected that there was magic involved in the food as it was just a little too perfect and even though he no longer felt hungry he didn't feel full either. A trap of culinary exquisiteness, so fine that even his thinking seemed to be more opulent and likely just as fleeting.

Having satiated his gastronomic leanings and not having lost sight of the Eladrin that had conjured them he walked over, trying to determine the nature of the group, and introduced himself "Pardon the interruption but I have just arrived and having just tried some of the food and drink on offer I would like to thank the person responsible. Would that be you and if so where did you learn such skills?"

Whilst chatting to the eladrin magic chef, the Barbarian was also seeing who else was part of this Eladrins group and if there were any signs of a hierarchy. Did they have insignia like you would find in the military. Was eye contact or lack thereof something that gave a clue?

Teema
right-aligned image

Teema really was dejected about her performance had been received, but when she came to Galen looking for pity, the kind ranger came up with reasons why it would have been impossible for the audience to listen to her song to begin with. He even called her voice pretty, making her lucent eyes light up a little. "Thank you! I've been singing almost all of my life. That one was meant to be for a special occasion." Even as the little harpy was talking her voice started at delighted and swiftly turned duller with each word until she was back to mopey, shuffling sullenly on her talons. "It took me a little bit to learn. Just a little..."

Being reminded that all her practice wasn't good enough at this ball for whatever reason had quickly doused her mood back to where it had been before Galen's compliment and with a deep pout she walked over to the doorman, asking him to give her the solution to this little escape room scenario. Teema felt a little bit like crying so she didn't correct the man when he told her that she shouldn't, and again her spirits didn't lift all that much when he also confirmed that the other guests were either too jaded or too intoxicated to even pay her attention. He also recommended to the blood harpy to partake of food and drink, and the only recollection about finding the key that he had was something about finding the fairest among the eladrin nobility. "Okaay..." The petite avian confirmed to the doorman that this was what she would do then, but it was blatantly obvious that her heart wasn't in it after her initial hopes had been curbed.

The white-feathered harpy still felt pouty as she jutted out her bottom lip and looked up at Galen when the ranger explained to her that it wasn't that good of an idea to eat here. She just nodded along, confirming to him that she didn't even care anymore. Galen wanted her to find Hex as he seemed to be already underway searching for an eladrin connection, and the elven adventurer's last hint to her was that the key was probably a person instead of an object. "I guess..." She agreed again, looking up at Galen and looking as sad as could be. "Okay, I will look for Hex then..." Just as she flapped her wings and took off, flying back up into the ballroom dome, before she even was able to spot the grey-skinned magician she already received a telepathic message that confirmed the theory which the doorman had also been proposing. It meant that instead of looking for Hex, Teema was actually much better served to look for the fairest of them all and her spirits finally recovered a little as she realized that finding them would allow her to get out of here post-haste.

~The doorman also said if we ask the fairest eladrin noble at the party to let us go, they might be the key! I will search for them from above.~ Just as the blood harpy had given her response to Hex, she accidentally spotted Girgadan by the food tables, chatting away with some other ballroom guests. Hex had said something along the lines of letting the others know and since Galen already did, Teema considered that she probably should tell the orc what the game was too. After another expedient descent, she landed right next to the warrior with a scraping noise and looked up at him as she grabbed the hem of his expensive garments. "Don't eat or drink here, Girdan! It will make you ignorant and dumb!" The indignant expression on the small harpy's face confirmed that she would take personal offence at that. "Anyways, we have to find the fairest of them all at the party to get out. Hex wanted me to tell you to look for them too." Then Teema finally regarded the person that the orc had just been talking to before she had swooped down to interrupt them. "Do you know who the fairest is? I can't tell who nobility is and who isn't..."

I'm taking a couple of liberties here. First, I'm combining Galen/Hex and Temma/Girgdan. Second, I'm giving Hex advantage on his Persuasion due to some 'help' from Galen.

The conversation Hex was having with his newfound Eladrin friends shifts a bit as Galen comes up.
"Ah, an Elf from the Material Plane." The Eladrin looked at Hex speculatively, "You cannot help him walk between the planes. He really does need to find the key." The Eladrin gestured to the party, or rather the Eladrin closely clustered at the far end of the Ballroom. "Look at them, each trying to outdo the other. The fairest of them all is a contest set by our host. Each guest approaches the one who they believe to be the fairest. That Eladrin gets a vote for the title. As new guests arrive, the title may shift to another." Another Eladrin interrupted, "Still, none may lie within the Ballroom. As well, the Queen would think it ill if we trapped our guests within the party. Those who cannot walk among the planes should have some exit. Perhaps the key shifts and moves."

"Pardon the interruption but I have just arrived and having just tried some of the food and drink on offer I would like to thank the person responsible. Would that be you and if so where did you learn such skills?" Girgdan asked. Girgdan was rapidly forgetting what had brought him here, or what the group was looking for.

The Eladrin looked at Girgdan"Tis not skill, but rather divine providence. My God Zandilar." The Eladrin chuckled, "It makes me popular at parties", and then more soberly, "Or at least it gets me on the invite list."

Temma flew up to Girgdan, "Don't eat or drink here, Girdan! It will make you ignorant and dumb!"

The Eldarin with whom Girgan was speaking burst out into laughter, "Sage advice winged one, but too late to save your companion. Although from his actions, he was ignorant and dumb before he partook of the food of the Gods."

The Eladrin took pity on the Blood Harpy, " Still, should he avoid eating or drinking anything further, he will recover. Although should he be trapped here, the food will be a blessing, blurring the months and years, as well as preventing his body from aging."

Temma turned to the Eladrin "Do you know who the fairest is? I can't tell who nobility is and who isn't..."

"The fairest,"The Eladrin priest said as he gestured to the crowd. The crowd was a motley collection. Each Eldarin seemed to want to outdo the others with wild colors and elaborate dress. However, Teema could see that there was a progression, Tiers within the Eladrin. As the Eladrin went towards the far wall, there was an increase in the Jewels and Gems that garbed the Eladrin.

Girgdan looked with Temma at the Eladrin. To his befuddled mind, the ornately dressed Eladrin ran together, until he saw, standing in a corner of the room, an Eladrin dressed in a simple suit of blue and grey. While the other Eladrin clustered in groups, this figure stood alone, sipping a flute of some beverage and surveying the room.

Hex
right-aligned image
(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

Hex thought about Teema's reply as he glanced at Galen approaching and half-listened to the eladrin.

Ask the Fairest to let us go? Just like that? From a Noble Eladrin? Something tells me it won't be that simple...

Then again, what did he know? Maybe Teema was right. The simplest solution, and all that. Whatever it was, first they had to zero in on who the Fairest actually was.

Hex nodded as the eladrin continued. When he was done, the half-drow responded. "I see... A popularity contest, was it? I wonder who the top contenders are... Beg your pardon, you've been very helpful, Mr...?"

Excusing himself for a moment, Hex approached the noble eladrin so he could get a closer look at each of them, especially the top contenders. He preferred to be within earshot of conversations, so he weaved through the crowds, smiled, nodded, danced around the food servers...

Hex was thinking that perhaps the 'Fairest' could simply be the most flamboyantly-dressed Noble. However, what if the title took on a different meaning? Perhaps the 'Fairest' was the Noble Eladrin who was the most even-handed in their decisions, actions, and perhaps, conversations?

An idea came to mind. Hex mentally messaged Teema. "I have an idea! If you could sing to provide some... hmmm... mood-music, I think this might be productive!"

The sorcerer suddenly leapt over the closest table to the noble eladrin, clapped his hands once, then shouted:

"NOBLE ELADRIN! ATTEND THY SERVANT!"

Then Hex gave an elaborate bow. He then grinned as he looked up once more, then continued.

"If I may pose upon you all fair Fair Folk... a riddle?"

As Teema flitted up to the ceiling to look for Hex, then darting off in another direction, Galen was left alone at the railing. He took a few minutes to locate his half-drow companion on the floor below, noted the clothes of whom Hex was with and made his way down to him.

Galen bowed and nodded to the Eladrin around Hex as he approached but didn’t say anything. He felt low and unclean around these elves. Perhaps it was the dresses and jewels. Or perhaps it was the indifferent expressions on their faces. Galen probably looked like a child or a poor man compared them. Maybe they thought he was Hex’s servant or something. Born of the earth and the trees, they probably half expected him to have a crown of leaves on his head and sing bird songs as entertainment. Galen dropped his gaze from the Eladrin but quickly looked up as Hex bounded away and called for attention from the nearest group.

A Riddle? Galen liked riddles and puzzles. Was he allowed to participate or just the Fair Folk, he thought as Hex went to explain.

Teema
right-aligned image

The petite harpy woman took on a bit of a frown as the eladrin next to Girgadan explained to her that the orc had already partaken of the food and in the elf's eyes had always been dumb and now become even more so. The reason that Teema frowned wasn't because this eladrin was adding insult to injury after Girgadan had already done what he wasn't supposed to, the little avian was upset because one of her new friends had done something to harm himself. Fortunately the elf immediately revealed to her that all she had to do was to keep Girgadan from repeating his mistake, and so instead of holding on to the barbarian's clothes she reached up and grabbed his calloused hand instead. "You're coming with me now, Girdan! No more doing stupid things and being a glutton!" The harpy turned her lucent eyes over at the banket. "It does look fancy though..." It was an unmistakable fact that Teema preferred her meat as raw as could be, but it wasn't that she had to eat it like that, and the food and drinks present before her certainly looked pretty and inviting. I can't though! I want to leave the party! The birdwoman shook her little head enough that her white, wispy hair flew from left to right.

Once Teema had refocused on the matter at hand, she asked the eladrin next to her to direct her to the fairest noble or at least to instruct her how to find them. But in regard to the competition at hand, the elf was less forthcoming. To the harpy's merit though, he didn't have to be all too explicit with words when she started to recognize a pattern of increasing fancifulness as her gaze spanned across the room. Feeling like following the pattern and heading to the other end of the hall would surely help her find the fairest quickly, Teema didn't particularly mind that the eladrin next to her had left her to figure it out by herself. So instead the petite avian turned to the big man next to her and put on the sternest face that she could, which actually turned out rather adorable instead. "I found a clue, and now you have to follow me! I can't leave you out of my eyes for a single second!" The last sentence very much was Teema replaying the other side of a talking to which she had received herself in the past. "You may say your goodbyes to Mr. Godly Food over here. Then we are going!"

As soon as Girgadan had done as she asked and said his farewells and anything else of import to the eladrin cook, Teema began dragging the much bigger warrior through the ballroom with her taloned hand tightly grasping his strong fingers. Inadvertently she ended up tickling his palms with the white downy feathers surrounding her wrists that were part of her snow-white wings, but she didn't let go even when he complained. Because of her size and because her clawed feet weren't as good for walking as they were for grabbing prey, Teema wasn't making good speed and it would have easily been possible for Girgadan to overtake her if he had wanted to do so rather than letting himself be pulled along. As she had gotten almost to the end of the room, Teema's ears perked up involuntarily as she received another telepathic transmission from Hex. Apparently he had a plan and wanted her to provide some mood music, and the blood harpy's response came as swift as a cliffside wind. ~No!! I don't want to sing anymore!!~ Teema pulled on Girgadan's arm a bit stronger as her face turned indignant along with her telepathic refusal. Naturally she had been trained to play various instruments and Hex had said nothing about singing, but without any fault on the half-elf's side he had reminded the avian performer how badly she had gotten ignored by this crowd once before. No way did she want to repeat this kind of disheartening experience. Instead she maneuvred herself and Girgadan to where the clothes of the eladrin had the flashiest appearance and once there, although Teema was still pouting over Hex's thoughtless request she simply turned to the noble closest to her who wore the fanciest garb. "I really like your clothes! Are you the fairest?"

Riddles, in PbP, the players can use the internet to search for riddles. For this room, the riddle is a contested skill.
The Asker can use an appropriate Ability (e.g., Int, Wis) and Proficiency (e.g., History, Religion, Arcana). The Answerer can do the same.

Temma led Girgdan to the far end of the Ballroom, where the more ornately dressed Eladrin congregated. Along the way, Temma ignored Hex's request for a musical accompaniment.

Reaching the elaborated dressed Eladrin, Teema asked "Are you the fairest?"

The Eladrin chuckled in response. "Say it as a declaration, not a question, or it doesn't count."

Hex asked, "If I may pose upon you all fair Fair Folk... a riddle?"

A single crystal clear note answered Hex's question. The Eldarin immediately stopped talking. The Eladrin parted to leave Hex facing a single Eladrin dressed plainly in Blue and Grey. The figure looked Hex up and down and smiled, "You amuse me. You are genuinely a mongrel - a mixing of the blood - Human and Dark Elf, with a touch of something else - Beholder, Mindflayer?" The Eldarin's eyes twitched to Teema, "And with a Blood Harpy as a companion."

Then the blue-and-grey clad Eldarin focused their attention on Hex. "A riddle, how unique. We've had musicians, singers, dancers, acrobats, jugglers, and even the occasional actor. I don't remember a riddled. I shall play."

The blue-and-grey clad Eladrin smiled dangerously, "Like the Sphinx, what is a riddle with consequences? What favor will I obtain if I should answer your riddle, and what would you ask should I fail to answer your riddle."

When the crowd quieted, Hex immediately focused on the Noble Eladrin clad in blue and grey. If the Fairest was one to whom the eladrin deferred, this one definitely was Fairest. Hex couldn't tell if they were male or female, which was not uncommon in the fey elves. He gave another elaborate bow to buy himself time to think.

"You honor me... ah, what shall I call you, Noble Eladrin?" the half-drow smiled as disarmingly as he could. "You are wise, to deduce my heritage in such a short span of seconds... Yet I am more than my races. I myself am a riddle, but that is not the riddle I desire to pose before you today...."

Hex paused, looking at the crowd to gauge their reaction to his words. After a moment, he continued. "This riddle is... not only for you, but for those who would call themselves 'Fairest'. Are you the Fairest, Noble one?" Hex looked at the Eladrin then, his eyes twinkling. "Perhaps, perhaps not. Your answers - ALL your answers," Hex glanced at the noble eladrin in attendance, "will help me decide. My retinue and I desire no delicacies," he gave a sharp look at Girgadan, then cleared his throat before hurrying on. "but direction. We seek the Part in the Curtain, the Shimmering Veil, the Portal to the Great Outdoors, the Way Out. The exit. As for what you desire, Noble one..." Hex looked at the eladrin in blue and grey again, straight in the eyes, devoid of deception. "I'm afraid I am too poor to offer any kind of treasure, save for... my confidence. Staying so long in a Party like this could be... dragging, no? If my riddle fails to entertain, then I offer a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and lips that would not tell a soul whatever your heart desires to unload."

The half-drow stood straight up, his flourishing and gesturing ceased. After a wink at Teema, he looked back to the noble eladrin. "Do you accept?"

As Hex's conversation with the Blue-and-Grey clad Eladrin started, the room quieted, and the two became the room's focal point.

The Eladrin snorted, "Perhaps this will be entertaining. At the least, you should enquire into my name before we have a joust of wits. Although " there was a smirk, "You appear woefully under-armed, or is it out-classed."

The Eladrin twiddled his fingers in the air, "I am Buttercup. Some call me Prince of Seelie Court." That smile as if the Eladrin was in a joke not known to others, "And I am your host."

"I hear not a riddle, not even a contest, for who would fail to proclaim their host the fairest. Instead, you seek a bargain. You wish to leave my party. How droll."

"You are right; your treasure counts for nothing here in the Faewild. It sounds like you offer me a bargain - a way out of my party in return for your confidence - a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and lips that would not tell a soul whatever your heart desires to unload."

The Eladrin smiled at Hex, clearly feeling he had gotten that he had gotten the better of the deal."I accept your offer."

And with that, the foursome was sitting at a table in the On-Your-Shield. With a strange jewel sitting on the table. When one of his companions commented on it, Hex found that he had a peculiar piece of Jewelry attached to one ear.

Occasionally, Hex will go to sleep, only to have the most bizarre dreams - some pleasant, some terrifying, and all fascinating, but when he wakes, he cannot remember his dreams.

The room fell silent, almost magically and instantly so as a noble stepped away from the side of the room. Galen could see Teema and Girgadan behind him. They carried themselves with confidence and an indifference to what everyone else thought of them. Their grey and blue clothes were not sparkly or outlandish like so many of the other Eladrin present.

They spoke to Hex in statements and what seemed to be partial riddles and ignored everyone else present as the two sized each other up, taking in every little detail about the other trying to gain the upper hand.

This whole room had clearly been meant for Hex all along. Of the four of them he clearly had the best skill set to deal with these kinds of people. Galen felt he done little in helping find their way out of this room.

After a short exchange between their fair host and Hex they were whisked back to a table at the Shield. “Sorry I didn’t help much in there friends. Honestly that kind of thing isn’t my cup of tea. Maybe I should have had something to drink and maybe I would have enjoyed it more, “ he chuckled half-heartedly at himself. Galen had not felt very help in the Never-Ending Party. The only thing he felt that he contributed was keeping an eye on everyone and keeping Teema from getting too depressed over the reaction to her song.

The ranger pushed his portion of the gold coin back into the middle of the table, “I don’t feel like I deserve much or any of this after my paltry contribution to that room...”

"Ooof - I think I might have had too much at that last party. This is an odd sensation for me as I'm usually the last one standing"

Girg has no problem pocketing the spoils from the last door. A door that pays is still a fun and novel thing to the barbarian and he thinks he might be more respectful to doors in the future, well when sober. He looks at Galen whilst rubbing his temples and says "Take the gold the door thinks your worth it, and if you can cure this headache I will give you more too"

He wanders off to find somewhere to get some water in and some water out and spots a new comer heading over
"Nice threads and just as good as ours. You missed one hell of a party - fortunately." the Half-Orc smiles again forgetting how poorly it comes across sometimes but not overly concerned if it upsets anyone and heads off to the head.

OOC
WARNING: This encounter is officially Rated Hard. A hard encounter could go badly for the adventurers. Weaker characters might get taken out of the fight, and there’s a slim chance that one or more characters might die.

Map - see The Door - The Woods.

Conditions:
  • Light: Normal
  • Terrain: Trees with undergrowth - suitable for Hiding
  • Cover: Trees (Brown Squares), cannot be shot through and break Line-Of-Sight
  • Movement: Trail (Yellow) cost 5ft/square, Underbrush (White) cost 7ft/square, Tree (Brown) impassable.

Notes:
  • There are 5 starting positions (PC 1-5) - please note your starting position
  • Please describe the movement with the Grid (e.g., k18 to K12)
  • Roll initiative, 12 or better and the PC can act before the Goblins
  • Please make a note of who is carrying the Healing Potion from the 1st encounter
  • I'm assuming everyone has a Healer's Kit (5 gold)

IC Bongle in the Jungle
With their new companion Roland, the PCs braved the Door. A boat in an Ocean of Water, a Ballroom in the Fey Wilds, who knew what they would encounter next. The next scene was a quiet walk in the woods, perhaps too peaceful. A trail through the woods made for a bit faster movement, at least until they encountered a band of Goblins.

The lead Goblin called out, "Umani. Det encam!" and the Goblins raised their bows.
