Galen reluctantly took his share of the coin back, sweeping them into his coin purse. “Ah Girgadan, find someone else that wants a shot at The Door.," seeing the half-orc come back with a new face.

“I’m up for a couple more rooms if you all are. As long as we don’t go back to the ballroom,”
the ranger said pushing back his chair and heading over the free standing door.

Galen closed his eyes as the weightless feeling over took him as the door sent he and his friends to another surprise location.

A grin spread across the wood elf’s face as he opened his eyes to find himself standing on a trail in the middle of some woods. “Well, this is much more like it,” Galen sounded cheerful and he took his long bow in his hand. He took the lead as they moved down the path as he took in his surrounds.

A shout ahead on the trail caught his attention and he could see some shorter figures advancing in their direction.

“Goblins! They’re armed watch out,”
the Ranger informed the others. He stepped off the trail to the left and moved H18behind a tree notching an arrow to his longbow. He G17stepped out around the tree to fire his arrow at any goblin on the trail, then moved back end turn at H18behind the tree.

Teema
right-aligned image

Teema was very offended when after being asked to sing to an audience of people who didn't like her singing, the next person she complimented on their clothes had the gall to confuse her with riddles and didn't give her an answer at all. I hate it here! I hate eladrin!! The harpy's expression was an odd mixture between looking hurt and angry after the eladrin next to her had simply followed his own joviality, and in all fairness had acted entirely appropriate to his culture. But before Teema could vent her frustration or do anything else that would have hurt the elves' sensibilities in return, a crystal clear sound rung out across the party and Teema as well as anybody else forgot what they had been doing when an exceedingly fair elf stepped up to Hex and began to engage him about, who would have thought, more riddles.

Teema showed her sharp little teeth as she gave one of the biggest scowls that she was capable of, but although she was internally at war with this Neverending party and how everybody seemed intent on bullying her instead of letting her go home, in the end her curiosity won out as she kept holding on to Girgadan's hand and decided to watch Hex's display his own skill at working a crowd. And apparently, he was much, much, much more effective than Teema's singing had been, and even Girgadan mentioned through his blissful stupor that he was pretty much the drow mage's fan. At this Teema almost looked like she wanted to cry, and not even the wink flying in her direction was able to lift her spirits. Somehow, the tiny harpy woman looked smaller than she had ever before, although her sparkling clothes still scintillated in the most various colours. This isn't fair!!!

Guided by intense emotions, Teema couldn't help herself. She felt betrayed that everybody apparently clung to Hex's lips. Then the big reveal, their host had been a prince of the Seelie Court, and even he thought that Hex was pretty special while he and everybody else at this party probably thought that Teema should just go die or something. ~I thought you are my friend, Hex!~ But no amount of telepathically accusing Hex for her bruised ego and his unintended betrayal was able to substitute for the relief that finally came when without even having to pass through the Door, Teema and everybody else from her party was teleported back into Westhaven's Inn on your Shield. The blood harpy was glaring daggers at the half-elf when a winged arm stretched out and snatched up the bag of gold which the magic of their transdimensional travel had bestowed on her. Then she indignantly flapped her wings to take perch on the backrest of her seat instead of properly sitting in it. She listened as Girgadan and Galen had their own gripes with the spectacle that they had just escaped, but Teema didn't feel like talking for once. Instead, she decided to fiercely think at Hex. ~You hurt my feelings! I don't want to talk to you right now!~

Teema's lucent eyes stayed narrowed as she kept harboring her unjustified resentment, but eventually the party agreed that their stay at the ball had been rather short and barely taken the wind out of them. So of course the decision was reached to attempt challenging the Door again. "I'm coming with! Someone has to keep an eye on Girdan, or else he is going to eat something bad again!" Teema felt pretty important that she had been responsible for looking out for the orcish barbarian during the last room, and although the Neverending Party had decidedly not gone her way, the petite harpy seemed intent to show everybody that she was going to be able to make it as an adventurer after all. And thus she landed in the woods, flying at the back of the party as they moved along a trail. Eventually, goblins appeared ahead of them on the road, but Teema hadn't been ready for combat just then. In her mind, adventuring had always been a bit of a romanticized venture. But this time her harpy instincts let her little heart skip a beat as her eyes widened and all her internal bells and whistles began to ring alarm. What's this?! Am I in danger of dying?! Despite her harpy instinct tingling so fiercely, Teema ended up reacting slowly to the danger ahead. The blood harpy felt suddenly more alive than ever before. She wasn't sure yet if she liked that feeling.

Roland
left-aligned image
Roland stepped back from knocking on The Door and listened. It would be ridiculous for someone to answer, surely. To his immense surprise, a group of people materialized in front of it instead! He stumbled back a step and cleared his throat. "Ah! Ahem. Well then..." After listening to the group talk for a moment he surmised that they had just come from an adventure inside The Door. "Fascinating..."

Before he could start asking questions a half-orc fellow complimented his clothes. Roland smiled and gave a half-bow, throwing his favorite purple cloak behind him as he did so. "Yes, thank you. I find that nice clothes make you feel nice." When half-elven noble turned back to the group he noticed that they were already heading back through the door. "Excuse me!"

He managed to slip through before an agitated looking bird-woman. "Oh my. Pardon me." As Roland entered The Door a strange sensation washed over him and then his stomach dropped into his toes and he retched violently. "Goodness!" The half-elf looked up just in time to see the goblins and hear their apparent leader's words. "Just a minute, there..." He retched again and fumbled around for his greatsword.

Hex
right-aligned image
(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

The rest of the conversation with Buttercup, and the Party itself, felt like a dream to Hex; riveting in the moment, but gone like a whisper afterwards.

Back in the tavern, he sat examining the jewel intently, fingering the strange earpiece that now adorned his right lobe absently. Come to think of it, the half-drow realized that he had forgotten what he dreamed about last night.

****

After entering the Door once more, Hex was a bit put off by the silence of this particular wood. It was... eerily quiet. Too quiet.

Then a goblin shouted.

Rather than speak audibly, Hex reached out to Teema with his mind. She was already upset at him before, but the sorcerer ignored that for now; perhaps time and combat would heal those wounds to the harpy's fragile ego. Galen had already called out the danger, and Hex nodded at the ranger who curiously had a smile on his face.

Well, this does get the blood pumping, yes?"Technically Teema-friend, we aren't 'talking', so this does not violate your... convictions, hm? But yes, there is danger afoot. Goblin archers. Stay hidden atop the trees!"

For his part, Hex blasted one of the goblin archers with eldritch magic, then proceeded to move out of sight behind a tree.

Girgadan
left-aligned image

The Half-Orc barely had time to get changed, exchange waters and snap up a healing kit from the barman (who seemed surprisingly well equipped). Wonder how long this door has been popping up here and what the barkeep gets out of it? In fact knowing his love for up close butchery he bought a second kit to pass on to one of his companions.

He still hadn't had chance to get over the encounter on the boat and was regretting rushing into, well everything. Girgadan got back to the room just in time to see his group heading back into the door again, this time it looked wilder and not wanting to let his new fellows down he rushed through the door. Hmmm - might be a bit reckless, I mean thats part of the reason I left the troop and came here and yet here I am rushing into danger, again!

Ahhh the woods, I love the woods when they're quiet. Wonder what the hunting is like its been a while since I caught a deer. Pre skewered on a javelin for roasting. HA I've never thrown a shot like that

Girgadan's little reverie was cut short by Galens warning as he dashed off to left. Something flashed from Hex and the Half-Orc's heart started its battle beat, not enough to drop the red curtain there would be time for that later. The Barbarian smiled pleased for the fight, the way his companions moved even the new one was going for his sword.

Teema was getting ready for flight and Girgadan passed his spare kit to her "If you are heading up you are best placed to pass this on or use it as you see fit. Good hunting"

Seeing the goblins were too far to cut up the Half-Orc makes a run off to the right and the Dash to N15cover of a tree. Perhaps this will split the Goblins

A few Tactical Notes. I'm going to highlight a few key tactical pointers each round
  • Due to the range limitations, the Goblins needed to move forward to get in range to shoot Roland, and a couple gave up and attacked Teema with a disadvantage. The PC with 120ft spell attacks and 160 ft longbow can out-range the Goblins. A party equipped with spells and longbow could continue to fall back, leaving the Goblins at a disadvantage.
  • The characters with high advantage were able to take cover, leaving the lower initiative ones to take the brunt of the attacks.
  • Notice how a much maligned Fog Cloud could have broken the Line of Sight for the archers.

IC A Hail of Arrows
right-aligned image

Galen, the Ranger, did what Rangers do, launching an arrow before ducking behind a tree. Unfortunately, the Wood Elf was a bit hasty and the arrow sealed harmlessly by the Goblins. Hex, the Half-Drow Elf, launched a bolt of Eldritch power. The lead Goblin dies screaming as the Eldritch power consumed them. Grigdan, the fleet Barbarian, took off charging towards the Goblins before ducking behind a tree.

This left Roland and Teema to face the wrath of the remaining five Goblins. The front three moved forward to get Roland in their range, before unleashing an arrow and ducking into the woods. Only one of the three arrows struck The Paladin, but the one that did found a chink in his armor and dug deeply into Roland.

The last two Goblin were more concerned about hiding than shooting at The adventurers. They lofted a pair of arrows at the Teema, the Blood Harpy. However, one of the arrows cut her.

All of the Goblins had ducked behind trees and into the Underbrush. However, G2 - failed stealth checkone Goblin was making a sufficient racket that the adventurers knew where he was.

The Half-Orc heard the swish the arrows heading down the trail followed by the goblins disappearing into the woods. He thought he was pretty close and needed to get to their location to try and stop any more volleys. Hearing one of the goblins scream and then stop was a sure sign someone had killed one. Now it was the Barbarians turn to make a move.

He crept forward to the next tree he deemed closest to some Goblins and hoped he spotted them before he did. Especially as he had just stepped on some old dried branches and given a clear signal of exactly where he was.

His was now pinning his hopes on getting a lucky throw off when the arrows came in...

Roland had just closed his hand over the hilt of his greatsword when the arrow struck him. It felt like he was hit by a battering ram. He reeled for a second and could feel pain blossoming around his wound. "Oof. Unnecessary! You'll pay for that!"

The half-elven noble looked around and noticed that half of the group he had followed through the door were using the trees as cover. "Wonderful idea!" He pulled out a javelin and quick-stepped behind the nearest I21tree. Attempt to Hide (11 Stealth)Once concealed, he quickly looked over his wound. It hurt but it wasn't life threatening. Roland peeked around his tree and when he thought it was clear he tried to quietly dart behind another F20tree, hoping none of the goblins saw him.

A satisfied nod came from Hex as he saw the goblin he had hit fall to the ground, but he grimaced from his tree cover when he saw Teema and the newcomer get hit by the goblins' arrows.

"Teema-friend you are a friend! A beautiful, talented friend! And as a friend I advise you now, once again, to hide yourself from these oafs so as to continue our beautiful friendship, yes?"

The half-drow then bided his time, aiming another eldritch blast at the first goblin that moved.

In his haste to get off the trail and get the jump on the Goblins Galen had left his companions on their own. He looked across the way and thought he could see Hex opposite him. The agonizing screeching of a Goblin in pain filled the forest giving some small distraction.

Knowing there was another tree not too far ahead Galen crept up to it hoping to get a better position to cover more of the trail and forest with his bow. The ranger didn’t want to waste his hold attack until we see a goblinsecond shot so he waited until he saw something short moving through the forest that didn’t have feathers. Hopefully Teema would take to the sky and make that less of a chance for him to hit her by I hope not, but I did roll some 1s in the boat room.mistake.

Teema
right-aligned image

Within the rush of quickly returning to challenge the Door again and with the arrival of this curiously retching big man, Teema had to remind herself that she was mad at Hex. Which wasn't particularly difficult at that moment because he had chosen to ignore how obviously mad she was being at him, and there were very, very few things that Teema hated more than being ignored. She was going to let him face the music of how greatly he was upsetting her too, but with the engagement against the goblins starting and the heightened sense of danger creeping up Teema's spine, her attention was immediately taken off of Hex and then the arrows had already started flying. Galen bolted to the side and Girgadan spun around, immediately putting a small bundle into her hands as she was still trying to orient herself. Just that moment a mental message reached her with Hex warning her to go hide in the trees, simultaneously with an eldritch blast of energy which slew the first goblin ahead on the path on the spot. The chaos in this first few seconds was complete and Teema was just about to take flight and respond telepathically as the first goblin arrow flew down the path and carved a single, deep gash along the harpy's unprotected shoulder. The avian's shriek was filled with pain as she leaped into the air, and her eyes went wild and her movements turned frantic. They're shooting me! I've been shot!!

The first battle that Teema had taken part in had happened across the waves only a few hours earlier. But as stimulating and exciting as that had been, being struck by an arrow was a terrible feeling and Teema was shocked by how much it hurt. There was no sensible reason to assume getting wounded like that wouldn't happen to Teema, but in her heart, the petite blood harpy had indeed not accounted for that possibility all that much when she had boasted about becoming an adventurer. Now, forced into the moment, the white feathers getting cloistered with her own blood, she had to quickly realign her thinking about what it meant to fight with her life on the line. Before Teema even was sure what she was doing she already found herself darting into the woods, out of the line of fire and flying straight above the underbrush until she reached the branches that were intersecting between two trees, where she came to a sudden halt as her talons and claws held onto the wood, giving her more security that she had gotten out of danger for just the moment. The second mental message from Hex reached her as she was panting and looking at her wound, and she listened to his strong professions of friendship and that he wished for her to stay alive. ~I'm hurt! I'll hide!~ Teema lacked the calm to express that she had received his heartfelt sentiments, and as she had taken cover as best she could, she peered out into the forest to understand how the goblins were moving. Teema's thoughts were racing and her new adventurer friends had started to spread out across the forest. Looking around the edge of the tree, she saw Hex and how he was channeling magic and waiting to fire it at the next goblin that he saw. "Be safe!!" She called out to him from between the branches, before she fully shifted her attention back to the surrounding forest.

IC A Deadly Dance
right-aligned image

The Goblins and the adventurers continue their deadly dance among the trees.

Galen moves behind a tree and takes up a position. Unfortunately, no Goblins move into the Elven Ranger's line of sight. Hex takes cover behind a tree. Then a Goblin stepped out from behind a tree and shot at the Half-Drow. The pair exchanged blows, although Hex came 1 damage vs. 5 damageoff the worse from the exchange.

Girgdan, the Half-Orc Barbarian, moved forward and attempted to hide the heavy underbrush. The wild waving of the underbrush as he attempted to hide drew a trio of Goblin arrows, although none pierced the thick-skinned barbarian.

Teema flew over top one of the trees, searching for the Goblins, but she could not spot any. Meanwhile, Roland, the Paladin, moved behind a tree and attempted to hide.

A voice in Goblin from G6the rear, "Skirmish formation. We're eating humans tonight!" G2One of the Goblins moved forward and took a hasty shot at Hex before disappearing behind a tree. G3Another Goblin stepped out and spotted Grigadan trying to hide in the underbrush. He let out a cry of "IOver here " and let loose an arrow before vanishing behind a tree. This drew two more Goblins out from cover to shoot at the Barbarian before they disappeared.

Hex
right-aligned image
(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

"Kkk-!" Hex closed his throat at the pain of the arrow wound protruding from his shoulder, cursing his luck that his second shot was inhibited by the terrain and his opponent was apparently a better shot. "Well, the 'safest' thing to do right now is to make sure those archers get taken down, no?" He mused to Teema as he snapped arrow in half with the edge of his shield and pulled out the embedded end. "Good thing these aren't barbed... Small blessings..."

The sorcerer knew he needed to move. From his tree cover, Hex could hear voices. Goblin voices. "Sounds like their leader is farther back, Teema-friend." Another goblin took a shot at him and missed, from a different direction than where the first arrow came from. "They're coming from both sides." Hex risked a peek at the half-orc savage who had been creeping forward, and saw that goblins were shooting at him also. They also missed. Hex grinned. "At least one of us got lucky! Teema-friend! What say you we help our green-skinned warrior, eh? Focus our attacks on that goblin who dared took a shot at Girgadan! I'll head right. You head... over-head. Heh."

Hex then shifted his thoughts toward the barbarian, closing his eyes for a second to establish a mental link. "Hi there. Don't worry, this is just Hex. Yes, I'm inside your head. At least, my thoughts are. Just letting you know we're behind you. Let's get rid of those pesky sneaksy goblinses!"

With that, Hex darted from one tree to another, waiting for a goblin to pop out its head so he could blast it with his eldritch magic. Unfortunately, the dense wood was proving too much of an obstruction to get a clear shot at anyone. "Blasted g08$#!+3!!!"

Yet....

Somehow... Was it Teema's voice? It seemed to guide Hex to the sounds of the goblins. Like echo-location. He raised his hand by instinct, trusting his subconscious. Then he released his blast.

"Teema-friend... That was... you? Thank you! That was superbly done!"

From his new postion Galen couldn’t see anything. He presumed the Goblins had spread out as he could hear some movement ahead and to his right of the trail they had been on. He moved up and over, closer to the path, towards the sounds he could hear.

The ranger kept his arrow knotched ready to shoot if he saw a Goblin. He had no idea where the rest of the party was, he assumed behind him, hidden among the trees, waiting and watching.

Having lost sight of the Goblins again was really annoying the Barbarian, in fact he was pretty angry, so angry he couldn't contain himself and BOOM - that was it the war drums were beating in his head, the blood was beating along at the same pace. Times like this were when he really felt alive and Dangerous.

He headed north towards where he last thought he had seen some goblins, Javelin gripped tightly in his hand. That's when he heard Hex's voice "Good to know - lets make something bleed" .

Assuming he now had his back protected by his companions Girgadan strode more confidently through the undergrowth - perhaps a little too focused on that one tree ahead. No guarantees the goblin was there afterall but the beats must be obeyed.
