[Game Thread] Strange maps

Confor So the sea hag has elemental control of the ocean if I'm remembering correctly. That didn't necessarily mean elemental water control. Squid attacks, whirlpools, weather manipulation...who knows? It wasn't terribly specific or useful, but sea lore wasn't his expertise. Confor observed the strange interaction of the thri-kreen and the human Arrogaio with an impassive face. Curious. Chakra appears to be establishing himself in a new hunting ground, a territory he is claiming. Is that because he expects more members of his race to sail to Westhaven? It might make sense; the insectoid warrior scorned conventional wealth and social status the other humanoids in the West Marches sought. Or at least that's what he claims. It wasn't so much that Confor was worried about treachery from Chakra; it was that he had no real understanding of the alien being, so miscommunications could happen quickly. The thri-kreen's baseline behavior was obnoxious and threatening, so a simple misunderstanding could result in bloodshed. Well, he won't be a boring travel companion. At least the others are easily understood, he reflected, smiling as he listened to the kenku's song.

Everyone prepares their belongings and says their goodbyes. The question is asked about drunken sailors to which the captain yells give em more ale! The men chear and yell.

The ship pulls from the dock as sailors use long sticks to pull away. The weather is nice and the sun is bright. The sailors break into another shanty.

The first couple hours go with little trouble. The waves are smooth and wind favorable.

Snap Kick With the sea air ruffling his feathers, Snap Kick stands with his head back and his eyes closed, arms outstretched to either side. "Aloft on the wind, ivory in silhouette, gulls against the sun." Bliss blended with pain, made bearable only by years of discipline at the monastery. Every kenku has The Dream starting at a very young age. On a plane of bright searing blue and palaces of crystal, raven men with wings of ebony clad in doublets of silver and indigo carried messages through the skies. Wise, learned, and deep within the confidence of their immortal Master. Until all were punished for the sins of the few, and the air was rent with unintelligible squawks of distress as the kenku tumbled and spiralled, wingless, to the hard earth. Many bodies lay broken, but those that stirred clawed miserably at their beaks, attempting to force out words that could not come. Now Snap Kick's mind was troubled by a new development. The other week in West Haven, he had come across a young kenku, one who -though wingless- had hailed the monk using its own words! Had the ancient grievance been forgiven at last? If so, it seems to not have relieved older generations of The Curse. He shoved these wondrous yet disturbing thoughts aside and went back to his breathing exercises.

Rhazor Blackhand (rogue level 4) The sails are set, the anchor is hauled in and the ship soon sails out to sea. Rhazor sits on a coil of rope close to the bowsprit and watches the clouds and the sea gulls on the backstay. Far better than walking, I have to admit.

The sun is now directly overhead. The ship is becoming hot to the touch and the salt from the sea is drying everything out. Fins are swirling around in the water. Roll a perception check and initiative.

Cha-kra It didn't take long for Cha-kra to explore the Red Lady and once he found that there was nothing interesting going on with the vessel, he quickly stopped with his stalking rounds. While all the other adventurers got themselves situated on their own terms, eventually the Thri-kreen climbed the crow's nest just as Snap Kick had done before him. The mantis found the kenku spreading his arms as if he wished them to be wings, but in his typical antisocial fashion, Cha-kra didn't even give the merest hint that he might comment as he threw his backpack into the nest and smoothly heaved his chitinous body into it as well. There was no greeting or discussion as he evidently had decided that this place would be his spot for the foreseeable future, and so Snap Kick had to proceed with his breathing exercises with the silent insectoid eerily resting in the background. Not seeming bothered by the heat or even the salty air, Cha-kra remained in the crow's nest as the sun drew higher and higher. The mantis was still enough that one might assume that he was meditating as well, but when suddenly fins appeared inside of the water his antennae twitched and he was to his clawed feet in a flash. The Thri-kreen had brought a long bow with him into the nest that seemed to be of elven craftsmanship. The mantis seemed to know how to wield it as he immediately reached down to his feet, ready to pick up arms within a heartbeat although nothing other than his attentiveness could have alerted him to this sudden encounter.

Briggs IC "Well, fish I suppose," Briggs replies to Rhazor. His tone is light, but he loosens his rapiers in their scabbards and begins to rock back and forth on the balls of his feet. If there’s danger, he wants to be ready. But danger from what? From where? He takes a hard stare at the fins in the water. Dolphins? Or sharks? ”Say, maybe it’s good luck to see sharks on a voyage? That’s a…good omen, right?”

Three years ago, I was there as the guest of – ” Though Arrogaio has been paying little attention to anything but his tale, the lurch of the vessel prompts him to immediate action. Before the sailors have had a chance even to flee, the fighter is on his feet, sword in hand, slashing at the great tentacle with his sword flickering a green flame. Meanwhile, Duha the owl harries another tentacle, opening up its defenses to the attacks of Arrogaio's comrades. * Apologies to Frank Miller.

THE SEA HAG STRIKES The warlock isn't paying much attention. He knows better, but he has allowed himself to grow inattentive. Even Arrogaio's voice doesn't cause a reaction, as Confor has started to learn to tune him-- "Oww!" A trace of blood on his earlobe shows how his 'crow' prompted it's 'master' to pay attention to his surroundings. Before Confor can get upset he sees a tentacle reaching on to the ship, with a convenient pair of sharks waiting nearby. "Hullo, hag," he mutters to himself. Reflexively, he casts a Hex on the tentacle, disadv to Str checksweak curse on the sea monster, Pulling out his light crossbow, he loads it and sees the Champion of Skuld's familiar flying at the tentacle, and the limb somehow reacting to it. Thank you, Arrogaio, he acknowledges in the privacy of his mind as he fires.

Rhazor Blackhand (rogue level 4) Rhazor's eyes had just adjusted to the even pattern of the waves when suddenly the water parted and the dorsal fins of two sharks appeared. Interested, Rhazor stood up. "Are these the funny fish that rescue sailors and pass balls to each other?" The sailor next to him gave him an incredulous look. A shark swam provocatively slowly by and Rhazor caught a glimpse of its long and pointed rows of teeth. "Okay, they aren't. I see. Question taken care of." Then the tentacles reached over the railings and scanned the deck for something to eat. The young rogue jumps back, not wanting to get too close to these huge things. So he shoots a bolt into the first tentacle from a safe distance Dice Range attack with crossbow: d20+5 (14)+5 Total = 19 (19) and the bolt hits it Dice Damage: d8+3 (5)+3 Total = 8 (8).

Cha-kra There was no battle cry that could have alerted the tentacles or the sharks to Cha-kra's presence on top of the crow's nest. He simply raised his elven longbow, notched an arrow, and fired, having taken aim directly at one of the tentacles which was already getting attacked by one of the other adventures. The arrow struck true, burrowing itself into the rubbery flesh. There was no glee or any other emotion on the Thri-kreen's chitinous face. He simply drew another arrow with one of his secondary limbs, and from his heightened position he prepared to take aim again.

Snap Kick Snap Kick squawks in alarm at the sudden onslaught of tentacles. Realizing he is of no help up in the crow's nest, he trills encouragingly at Chak-ra and starts to scramble down the ladder.

Briggs IC Briggs doesn’t see the tentacles until the sunlight hits them, but his attention is already on the sharks. He badly wants to attack the sharks, memories of the shark demon that had once nearly killed him flooding his mind. But but finding them out of easy reach, he goes for the tentacles instead. He strikes the tentacles with both rapiers, a savage grin on his face.
