With another nod of thanks she watched Valerius climb down across the dangerous belly of the great flying beast. Khat and Prrup-tik soon followed, leaving the elf alone at the top of the crow's nest. She looked down after her allies and then at the empty sky, for a moment uncertain about leaving her lookout position from the top. If she went down, would she get into trouble with the captain? Would it be considered abandoning her post? She wasn't sure. Flashes of contradiction crossed her mind as her head spun between scanning the skies for more birds and the route down to the bottom. It was a pity her bow could not reach the bottom from here.

From her vantage she spotted the birds swooping in and out of the interior of the ship and the few bodies still falling. Valerius and her allies had really saved her. What if the birds flew back up here? If I go down, who will defend the ship from here? Kazza's mind was made up. She'd have to stay. She could not leave the ship without having some sort of lookout from here. If those birds came back and put a hole in the envelope, it would be bad for all of them. She scampered back to the crow's nest, made sure her bow was ready, steading her heart and her breathing and continued to

Air strikeSaluruk is pulled into the air and over the railing. At that moment Cujo bites the large bird and the animal lets go of the sky priest before taking flight. For a second the half-orc seems to float in the air, then gravity strikes and Saluruk falls. A rope grazes his fingertips, but Saluruk cannot hold on. For one terrifying moment, the sky priest sees already himself to fall to a deep death, when suddenly he is pulled hard to the side and slams painfully against the hull of the airship.
"Aaaaaaargh...", Saluruk hears the cry of pain from Captain Frostraven. "Hold on somewhere, you're too heavy for me!" she gasps. The young woman dangles a few feet above the half-orc on the outer wall, holding him by his belt as her harness cuts deep into the young woman's flesh.

At that moment, Khat lands hard on the main deck. Just then, she can see the captain and Saluruk tumble over the railing and the rope of the harness tighten.

On the starboard side, Valerius hurls a net at the bird and the animal falls helplessly tangled in the sticky net, fluttering in panic.

A moment later, Prrup-tik also slides down the rope ladder and lands next to Khat on the main deck.

Kazza's sharp eyes scan the surroundings and she immediately spots the large jackdaw taking flight on the port side.
DM's note:As I mentioned, there is a lot to do offline for my family and my work. Thus, I had not the time to make a new map. We continue the fight in a theater of the mind.

Khat - Rouge Female Shifter (Swiftstride) | Darkvison: 60ft, PP 13, PI 11 | Status: normal | Initiative: +5

Khat landed on the main deck just in time to see Captain Frostraven and Suluruk tumbling over the ship's side. The Swiftstride Shifter rushed to the side of the ship. She knew she had only moments to act before the Borean Cleric fell to his death.

Bracing herself against a railing post, Khat tossed one of the ten-foot ropes attached to her harness over the edge, next to the Captain and Suluruk. Khat called out, "Quick, grab my rope. I don't have the strength to pull you back on board, but I'm braced and can hold the rope while you climb back up."

"Cujo: fetch!" commanded Prrup-tik as he himself scampered a few feet away from Khat. While the ranger hastily retrieved his grappling hook and rope from his pack, his loyal wolf followed his instruction, putting his jaws on Khat's rope and preparing to pull. The grung nearby lobbed his hook down toward Suluruk, hoping to gently snag the big half-orc.

She spotted the large bird shooting out from beneath the envelope of the airship, and spun around on her heel, bringing an arrow into her longbow in one smooth motion. As she drew the fletch of the arrow to her cheek, she reflected, for a moment, on the beauty of the sky, and the solitude of being alone in the wind. Then, she exhaled slowly as she adjusted her aim for the wind, and

Suluruk feels himself get pulled against the ship when everything feels lost and Khat once again saving him from what should have been his death against the skies.

He pulls against the rope and hand over fist lifts himself back to the deck. "Gah! Suluruk not die in clouds. Damn birds are no match against sky priest."

Rescue at the last second!Cold wind blows into Suluruk's face as he dangles above the seemingly endless depths. Very small, he can make out houses and trees below him. He thinks he can feel the captain's fingers slipping out of his belt one by one. And the tips of his fingers sliding across the leather.

Then suddenly a rope with hooks slams against the hull beside him and Suluruk can make out Khat's feline head above the rail. The cat woman is shouting something, too, but the driving wind tears away every word.

Somewhere in the corner of his eye, he spots a giant spider climbing over the envelope of the airship, but with no bird left in the vicinity, it finds no more targets.

Only Kazza finds another target, but the arrow bounces off the thick feathers and disappears into the depths. The bird screeches indignantly and flies on.

Suluruk grabs the rope and the hook. He hears the relieving, metallic click of the clasp on his harness. Then, his comrades pull him back on board. The cleric falls heavily onto the planks and never in his life has hard, polished wood felt so good under his hands.

Captain Frostraven leans down to him and gives him a friendly pat on the shoulder. "Well done, sky cleric, the gods are truly with you!"
DMoC:End of combat. Everyone can act freely.

Khat - Rouge Female Shifter (Swiftstride) | Darkvison: 60ft, PP 13, PI 11 | Status: normal | Initiative: +5

Khat braced herself against the rail post in anticipation of the half-orc cleric's weight and armor. However, at the last second, the Prrup-tik, the frog-like ranger, rushed over to the rail and threw over a rope with a hook. Khat thought, "I need to get one of those to add to my gear." and then after a moment of reflection, "Better yet to never again set foot on a flying contraption like this."

Khat breathed a sigh of relief when Suluruk managed to climb back on board. "You are the third of us almost lost to the flying monsters. Truly, I had no idea that flying could be so dangerous." Khat looked to Prupp-tik. "It is a dangerous proposition. Ranged weapons suffered a disadvantage when shooting at the creatures, but engaging them in melee put us in greater danger."

Khat nodded respectfully to Captain Frosthaven, "Captain, I'm no stranger to danger and have been in many combats. However, this was one of the more dangerous, where a single misstep could result in the death of myself or a companion. I now have even greater respect for you and your crew. Not only is your vehicle a magical and mechanical marvel, but every day, you all brave dangerous not known to those of us on the surface."

DMOCThe posting pace is quite low, so I think, we can continue quicker.
The calm after the storm.

Everyone calms down again and soon it is clear that there will be no further attack. After all the injured have also been healed - Captain Frostraven has a wand of healing - the captain calls the newcomers to the main deck.
"Aeronauts! You did a great job in combat today! You were brave and defended the ship heroically." She looks at each of the adventurers. "Each and every one of you should be proud of yourselves!" She nods to the first mate and he pulls out 5 bronze plaques from a small box and hands them to the captain. The plaques are round and show a sword and a feathered wing crossing.
"I hereby promote you to Your familiar with the airship, now. Even under stressul conditions. On the airship, once per combat, you can neglect a negative effects like headwind, airship movement or poor view.Sky Defender Third class!" The captain and all the crew salute, then Captain Frostraven pins one of the bronze plaques on each adventurer.

Able Aeronaut Featherstar passes out a hot toddy to all involved. Captain Frostraven stands and raises her mug.
"To the sky and beyond!"
"No storm, no lighting, no danger will stop us!"
the crew roars as answer.
"To the sky and beyond!"
"No storm, no lighting, no danger will stop us!"
"To the sky and beyond!"
"No storm, no lighting, no danger will stop us!"
Then everyone drinks their mug in one go. Whether it's the heat of the drink or the spiciness or the high alcohol content - everyone feels very alive again afterwards.

------------------------------

The next few hours pass quickly as hills and trees suddenly appear between the clouds. At first everyone expects them to be mountains or plateaus, but as the airship gets closer, everyone realizes that they are a group of islands, floating half a mile above the ground. On the top of the islands it looks perfectly normal, but the they appear with the soil and rocks underneath as if they were pulled out of the ground by giants and plants immediately took their root system with soil and rocks.
While some are barely rocks and only have room for a few trees and shrubs, one island is large enough for a village with fields and forest. A dozen or so windmills can be seen on the hill in the center of the island and also three mine towers from pits.

Another airship anchors near the village in a meadow.

Capitain Frostraven sighs with relief. "Finally, the Greenwind Islands!"

Once it seemed that the melee was over, the Valerius dropped down to the deck and allowed his spidery aspect to melt away. He shrugged out of it like a gooey coat, and the various bits and pieces dried up and flew off in the wind.

The tiefling was a little poleaxed when the Captain went around them all and pinned the bronze plaque to his chest. He'd never gotten an award before, much less a promotion. Then again, he'd never had a proper job before. Was this normal for proper jobs? The hot toddy, though, was something he understood. He was happy for the distraction from his thoughts as he threw back his mug.

Kazza gave the empty skies one last look, trying to spot any aberrations in the colours, or changes in the shapes of clouds. Satisfied that she saw nothing, she slung her bow across her shoulder and nimbly slid down the ladder from the crow's nest to the lower deck. When the captain called, one jumped. She landed smoothly, her eyes already taking in the shape of Valerius as he shifted from the spider form to the usual tiefling appearance. She approached the druid with intent. "I thank you," she said softly, but probably quite stiffly. She wasn't used to this kind of thing. "You presence was life-saving. My bow and my fist are yours whenever you need it." It was as much as she could offer. Her skill in battle if Valerius ever need it. It would have to suffice for a thanks.

On the deck she stood proudly as the captain pinned the bronze emblem on her tunic. And even joined in with the crew to give a single cry of, "No storm, no lighting, no danger will stop us!" Caught up in the moment and happy to be alive. She forced a half smile, which widened as she listened to Prrup-tik. She had to admit that the grung seemed a bit easier to be around on this trip than in the swamps. "The Greenwind Islands. This the place where your friends were lost." She didn't look to the captain as she spoke, instead marveling at the great mounds of earth that appeared like sharp, rugged bubbles in the sky. "It is a sight to behold. Never in my centuries..."

The Greenwind IslandsThe Dragonrise now sinks significantly and flies toward the village in the lee of the floating islands. A huge rock wall rises in front of the bow like a wall created by the hand of the gods. Flocks of birds breed in the overhanging crevices and fly up screeching loudly as the airship approaches with a loud hum.
A few smaller rocks hover next to the main island, almost threatening the airship, but the experienced crew steers the Dragonrise safely past any danger.

Then the airship reaches the edge humming and soon flies again over woods and meadows as if it were any place in the West Marches. A few rabbits and deer take refuge in the woods, and shaggy baby calves in a meadow hide fearfully under their mothers, who calmly continue to ruminate the lush grass.

Then the Dragonrise lands not far from the village in a stubble field, barely two hundred yards away from the other airship, from which large, yellow-white strips of a foamy material are being discharged. Half a dozen covered ballistas can be seen on the deck of the airship.
As the wind shifts for a moment, a rancid, fishy smell drifts over.

"OK, aeronauts." says Captain Frostraven. "We'll ask here about the whereabouts of the Angellight, then we'll take off again. You're welcome to stretch your legs on the ground and go shopping in the Greenwind, but be back here for departure!"
DMoC:The characters have about an hour to do whatever they want before the Dragonrise will lift off again.
