Kazza arrived at the airship out of breath and heaving, not so much from the exertion but more from the anxiety of the situation. The barkeep's words still reverberated in her mind. Darkground Highlands. I hope nothing comes up the root this time. The words spun. Somewhere in the back of her mind she'd berated the man for not speaking clearly, but somehow he, or she, or both had not waited around for the response. Instead she'd raced through the crowd, all moving around like ants. She looked back in the direction from where she'd come and everything seemed to be growing quieter, like the great rumbling following the stroke of lightning was slowly fading in the distance. It unnerved her, because she felt another strike was imminent. This time. I hope nothing comes up the root this time.

Khat's voice stroked the silence of the air, questions about their destination, but somehow. while those were imminently relevant, they didn't quiet the elven mind. Something was odd here. Why was the orc, why were the crew, not reacting to whatever was happening? Was it so commonplace? This time. She turned squarely to the half-orc, facing the majestic dragonrise. "Able Aeronaut, what is happening here?" It was as much a question as a demand for answers. Things seemed to calm. "Are we not staying to help? Is there not trouble here? Are these people not worthy of the attention of the Dragonrise and its crew?" Perhaps she had it wrong, perhaps she did not understand it, but it seemed strange to her, and she needed clarity.

The Greenwind Islands"This is none of our business, Air Defender Leafwind. This island is touching the ground. Such things happens. Especially when an island is close to its former home position." Able Aeronaut Grudark Ironcloud explains while shrugging his shoulders. "It's not dangerous for the airship. And we leave anyway." He points to the north. "The captain wants to arrive at the Dragon Cave islands at the late evening so we can use the night to sneak closer through the clouds. A dragon not met, is a dragon not fought." He grins. "In the early morning, we should be able to reach the island where are friends wanted to loo... search for trea... ancient artifacts."

The airship's bell is rand twice and the trap door of the airship closes with a loud bang. Immediately, the engine howls and the airship rises quickly into the air. Saluruk summons a strong wind from the back and Dragonrise leaves the Greenwind Islands.
Deep below the airship, the mighty clouds of dust and dirt rises higher than any tower between their usual white siblings as the rocky root of the island scratches over the highland. In the semi-darkness of dust and dirt, one can see some tiny small dark spots clinging at the root, but this may be an illusion or just dirt...

Khat did not miss the slip of Grudark, "Dragon(s), loo - looking or looting, a search for treasure, ancient artifacts. The captain's friends were looting a dragon's horde." Khat pondered her next steps, "We're onboard this flying ship, not much chance of backing out. We'll need to bring our A-game to the adventure."

Khat started coordinating with the group, "I agree that a Dragon not met is a dragon not fought. We came along to help rescue your friends, not fight a Dragon. So, it sounds like Stealth will be our best defense. I've no issues with Scouting ahead. I can also talk with a pair of you psychic whisperstelepathically for several hours."

Khat looked Suluruk over appraisingly, "We need to find a location where you can be available if we get into combat but are not relying on being stealthy. "

Oblivious to the talk of dragons, Prrup-tik leans on a banister and watches the receding island as the airship takes off. His prominent brow furrows in a very human expression; the Grung shares Kazza's concern for the innocents of the Greenwind Isles.

He points to the spots on the roots. "Look!" he exclaims. "I heard them talkin' in the village about bad things climbin' up." Prrup-tik turns to Grudark as well. "We really ain't gonna do nothin'?" he asks. The ranger imagines himself easily picking off clambering invaders with his crossbow.

The villagers continue to scurry about, looking increasingly like scattering ants as the Dragonrise abandons them. Prrup-tik originally joined a rescue mission, eager to help; the pay was incidental. Only now does he begin to understand the full consequences of hiring himself out to strangers.

Kazza felt uneasy about the half-orc's response, particularly in the use of her title. It may have been incidental, but there was an air of finality to it that meant she had to obey. To listen to orders if she wanted to stay on this mission. She had to admit that while she was happy to go along to help others, she wasn't invested in it with heart and soul. Not like when the Doom was calling her. Having thought that, in other scenarios often the calling had not been that strong and still she'd managed to find something that could be used against the inevitable coming of her destiny. Perhaps there was another force at work in her that was opposing the Doom? Something unseen that is not revealing herself? She didn't really know, but it was something to ponder before her next trance.

"It sounds like the island is bouncing up and down," she remarked to her allies, not to the half-orc who had addressed her earlier. "My guess is that sometimes on the ground, something may connect to the island and climb up. This must be a regular occurrence." She looked at Prrup-tik, understanding his words. "We can't save everything or everybody. Sometimes we should let people deal. And who's to say they cannot? They may be able to use the extra help, but if these event occur regularly, they will know what to deal. For us, there is more danger ahead if we don't avoid dragons." She leapt onboard the airship and looked towards the crow's nest. She then clambered up to take her position.

It took a while of travel to near their destination and she didn't like the gloom and darkness as it obscured even her elven sight at this distance. "Hard to see by naked eye. We should trust to the crew to know how to respond. But be as wary as possible." She kept her bow to hand and prepared for anything.

The Dragon Cave IslandWhen Khat offers to use her telepathic powers, Grudark nods. "This is a great idea! Talk to the captain directly." Then he turns to Valerius. "In the past, the islands were a dwarven realm with many treasures. The ruins, caves and dungeons have attracted all kind of treasure searchers over all the centuries, including our missing friends."
Prrup-tik words stop him from any more explanations. "The villagers ought to know how to defend themselves. They face this every other year." the half-orc answers, but it sounds some kind of lame in the frogman's ears. "Beside this, we're here to save our friends ... and their properties." Well, this sounds more like the true motivation for Prrup-tik.

Soon, dark cumulonimbus clouds appear on the horizon. The weather gets worse and stormy. Rain and storm whip over the airship. Lightning flashes just past the hull and envelope and their bang almost makes the ear skins burst. The engine works roaring against the storm, but the Dragenrise seems to make slow progress, although Captain Isorana Frostraven continues to climb several times to escape the thunderstorm. The thin, icy air mixes with hard rain that whips into the faces of anyone who ventures out of the cabin. Even Saluruk's divine powers are not able to calm the raging sky.
The hours of the afternoon seem to pass in slow motion, but finally the thunderstorm ends and evening arrives. The sky changes from dark to black. The engine of the airship, whose roar under full load already hurts the ears, suddenly becomes quieter and turns into a moderate humming. In the cabin, the lights go out.

In the darkness 1st Helmsman Ragrum Stormfall calls the new Air Defenders together. "Ay, Air Defender, we have reached the territory of the Dragon Cave Islands. From now on, be careful. No lights, no noise!" He casts a warning glance toward Cujo. "We need two Air Defenders in the lower crow's nest and two in the upper one. Best with you, Air Defender Khat. We need your telepathic skills most up there. The rest ... and the wolf with its master ... stay on the main deck. As soon as you spot something, you pull the reporting cord. I'll wrap the bell with a cloth." He looks at the adventurers except for Khat. "Then may the gods have mercy on our souls."
He salutes. "Air Defender! Dismissed! All to your posts!"

The cranky druid climbed into the lower crow's nest; he had a good vibe going and was feeling lucky. Perception 23If there was something to see, he was sure he'd catch a glimpse of it.

Khat smiled at the Captain, bearing her long canines. "I shall establish a telepathic link between Saluruk and us. Should you need to communicate with either of us, merely think about it. For now, I think that I'm best positioned in the upper crow's nest. Should I see something, I will let you know telepathically. However, my companion will ring the muffled bell so that others than you can understand. "

Khat turned to Saluruk, "I think you are best in the lower crow's nest to communicate what you see to the Captain."

Khat told Suluruk, "On the Island, I think it best that I go ahead, and the group follows behind. We will need to adapt on the ground. Fortunately, our telepathic communication gives us some advantages. I can tell you when and how far to move, as well as warn you of obstacles and dangers. "

Kazza had accepted a post on the lower crow's nest, happy to allow Khat to monitor the group with abilities that she didn't understand. This psi power of whatever it was called, was as strange to her as magic, but newer than she was used to. By the time the evening came and the storm has passed, she was glad for the extra clothing she'd purchased. Water and wind, the boons of the storm, had meant a rather uncomfortable trip. Still, there were things she could imagine that were far worse, a dragon would be one of those.

She peered into the gloom, always keeping her eyes alert and not knowing what to expect. Somehow the unknown was more terrifying that facing an enemy one could see. And she vividly remembered a strange dimensional creature that had once stolen Briggs to another place. Only briefly. She wondered for a moment what had become of all those she'd known. Perhaps Prrup-tik knew what had become of Briggs. She shook her head against the gloom and the passing storm. Now was not the time to dig up old names and memories. Now was a time to be alert.

After helping to take flight saluruk looks out into the sky. It is then that Khat approaches to discuss thier plan. "Yes, I will watch our crew while you look ahead. The area may be dangerous your a firce warrior and have saved my life before. Know I shall do the same should you need me."

Prrup-tik experiences a twinge of envy as others move to fill the crow's nests. He didn't find it very comfortable when he was there, but he felt important. At least he gets to be with Cujo on deck. "The dynamic duo!" he exclaims, but only for the wolf's ears. "We'll watch for dragons from here," he instructs his companion. "But if you sthee one, justtht point."

The Dragon Cave Island - Dragon alarm!Night falls surprisingly fast. A pale moon stands in the black sky, interrupted by dark wisps of clouds. The cold wind whistles through all the cracks and gaps in the ship and clothing, accompanied by the constant hum of the engine.

Valerius and Kazza climb into the lower crow's nest. It's cramped in the basket, but the high rim protects against the wind. The basket is held by three ropes and sways in the gusts of wind. Then the wooden winch is set creakily in motion and with crunching ropes the crow's nest moves with its two occupants a few dozen feet into the depths.

Khat observed the tension in Brynor's body. The Half-Elf was pale in the moonlight, obviously terrified. Khat wondered, "What is valuable enough to bring the ship and crew to the place, both the initial search for treasure and now? Are they back merely to find their companions, or perhaps a second shot at the treasure?"

Khat shifted her focus to the able aeronaut. Khat told him, "Slow breaths, in through the nose, out through the mouth. Breathe through your body and relax your muscles. " Khat smiled, baring her canines, "A bit of advice from one who has hunted and been hunted too many times to count. Tension kills predator or prey. It exhausts your body, slows your mind, and saps your spirit. Relax your body, and your mind and spirit will relax. You need to be fresh for the chase, whether you are the pursuer or the pursued."
