Using ability scores

Hello everybody!

I am playing to my first role game and I have some troubles with abilities score roles. My DM asked me to do a perception check and I just threw the dices with 1d20+1, which is correct. However, do I have to add something else with this move (a description, some text...)? How I have to understand the result and what is next?

Thank you very much!!

P.D.: Sorry if this kind of thread is already posted. I started reading the basic rules d&d but I couldn't find real examples.

Your DM will tell you the results of your roll.

For instance, if you rolled very high, you might have noticed something. If you rolled low, you probably missed something, or didn't notice it. If you rolled in the middle, perhaps you noticed one thing, but not something else more important.

Your DM will determine the success of your roll, and what number it takes to make that.

Posting related with rolls will always depend on the situation. If the GM asks for a roll for something you were not actively doing, do not put up a post (before the result) that you are doing the action now.

Post 1:
I am walking through town.
GM:
<roll a Perception check>
Post 2:
While walking around I keep an eye on the crowd and alleys
*rolls dice*

This is an example of metagaming in PbP...you were not actively looking around until after you were told to roll.

Arcana checks in 5e sound similar to knowledge: arcane skills in pathfinder (I could be wrong, I don't play 5e). If so, they are generally checks to know a little about magic... what school of magic a spell may be in, what components might be required, what symbols might mean, or how to draw them for the right use, or maybe something about a famous wizard, spell, effect, artifact, or magic item.
