D&D 5e - Weapons with Reach

In 3.5e weapons with reach could not be used to attack the adjacent square. Personally I disagreed with this rule for most weapons. I felt that a reduced damage option should be available for close range combat.

However with 5e if I am reading correctly a weapon with reach can used to attack both at 5ft and 10ft (medium size creature). Am I reading this correctly?

Yes. Reach weapons allow you to hit both at a 5' and 10' range. The only reach weapon with some sort of exception is the Lance. You CAN attack a target within a 5' range, but you have disadvantage on that attack. Also, while wielding a lance, it takes 2 hands to wield while not mounted. But, only 1 to wield while mounted.

Has anyone else seen/experienced the kusarigama (chain sickle). It's a monk weapon, d4 but reach and light. So it's possible to dual wield with it. Plus it's a chained weapon so you can grapple with it too. Doesn't it sound a little too broken?

What source would that be in? I can't really comment on the "chained weapon" part until I read the full text, but the other bits sound okay to me, operates like the standard whip.

The weapon requires both hands so you can't hold any thing else.
Yes, you can dual wield it... 1d4slashing with the sickle and 1d4blunt with the mace-headed end.
Grappling--is ok- situational at best.

It's not like a 4e rogue using spiked chain to sneak attack.
