[Profession] The Cultivator

left-aligned image
An Epicurean Cultivator
The Cultivator

To some, tending a garden or taking care of animals might seem like a mundane thing, tasks better left to who can stand the dull drums of domestic life. And that might be true for someone who is always looking up, but if you spend your whole life with your eyes on the horizon, you'll never see what's right in front of you.

No one understands this better than those who cultivate the land and its denizens, and giving a part of themselves back to the earth is the greatest pursuit they can hope to master. Because in doing these things, they cultivate not just simple goods to sell or use, but also bonds with the land...and one another.

Though it is often more common to find a cultivator settled and rooted to the ground on a farm or a ranch of some sort or another, a select few travel with their herds, perhaps in search of a home to call their own or new opportunities to learn more about their chosen craft. Who says you can't go grow things and go on adventures at the same time?!

Cultivator Media

right-aligned image
A cultivator's media is defined by what they cultivate. Choose two options from the listings below. Note that you choose two categorically, the subcategories to the right are examples of what that category broadly encompasses and should be defined by your actual profession. Selecting a medium doesn’t mean you’re fully versed in the scope of all its materials, which is to say someone who raises cows may know little about raising spiders, while someone who spends their whole life growing vegetables might not be as capable at growing fruit trees:

MediaExamples
Animal Products

Medicine

Rearing

Training

Brewing

Crops

Non-Food Plants

Spirits
composting, dairy, meat, textile, venom

aquatic, large animal, small animal, plants

aquatic, avian, mammal, insects, unusual/monsters

burden, combat, companionship, hunting

ale, draft, coffee, tea, wine

fruits, herbs, vegetables

trees, flowers, vine plants, water plants

elemental, nature, divine, heirloom

Examples: Someone who works as a breeder might choose Animal Rearing and Animal Training as their media, while someone who makes milk tea might take Brewing and Animal Products. A butcher might choose Animal Products alongside Crops to grow seasonings for meaty marinades.

Tools of the Trade
If you select Cultivator as your first Epicurean Profession, you automatically gain proficiency with a set of tools chosen from the list of cultivation-related tools you can find in the "Tools of the Trade" thread. Note, however, that if you feel your profession might have better use for some tool not listed, you're free to define them just as you would a set of Artisan tools. Generally speaking, your first set of tools should match one or both of your medias.
Multiclassing
In order to multiclass into an Epicurean Cultivator, the following prerequisites need to be fulfilled:
  • You must have proficiency with one tool related to your chosen specialization within the Cultivator profession (see Tools of the Trade for this profession).
  • You must have successfully tamed, bred, or raised an animal to become affectionate towards you or successfully grown a plant to its producing or flowering stage. Alternatively, you can create a space in which you can properly raise and care for animals and/or plants to show your dedication to your chosen craft.
  • You must take the time and update your registration at the Adventurer's Critique.

Cultivator Secret Arts

Animal ReaderAnimal Reader

Prerequisites: Cultivator Rank 1

You have a gift for relating well to animals, and can learn about them just with simple interactions. As long as an animal isn't hostile or doesn't flee, you can spend 10 minutes in an animal's presence to learn two of the following:
  • An animal's Natural personality trait.
  • What it likes to eat, or at the very least, what it will tolerate eating.
  • How it interacts with other animals in its biome or locale or how it views people.
  • Whether or not an animal is in physical or emotional distress.
  • What you might be able to do to get the animal to trust you or someone else.

Lingering FeelingsLingering Feelings

Prerequisites: Cultivator Rank 2

Each day, when a Cultivator would normally lose all of their remaining ❤️ for the day, they can create Lingering Feelings in order to 'store' ❤️❤️, which will transfer over to the next morning. Lingering Feelings can be created a variety of ways, but generally include some kind of effort on the Cultivator's part to retain said feelings. Such examples might include:
  • Singing a lullaby for a party member or a charge.
  • Writing about the day's events in a journal.
  • A heart-to-heart talk with a companion.
  • Reflecting on something important.
Players are encourage to come up with creative ways to impart Lingering Feelings, and exceptional effort should be awarded by the GM.

People ReaderPeople Reader

Prerequisites: Cultivator Rank 1

You are a knack for learning about people you interact with, even from just simple interactions. By spending 10 minutes with someone or in a space that they regularly occupy, you can discern the following about them:
  • A habit that they have, such as a nervous twitch, a tell, or something they can't stop doing.
  • Something they like, such as a favorite color, a favorite flower, or perhaps a favorite dish.
  • Their skill level versus any peers in similar crafts or professions that you are familiar with.
  • Their relationship status, such as whether or not they are married, single, in a relationship, crushing on someone, or looking.
  • A good gift to give or service to provide to this person to make them more amicable towards you.

Wonder of WildsWonder of the Wilds

Prerequisites: Cultivator Rank 4

You can draw upon your experiences and bonds to invoke a bit of Domestic Magic by expending ❤️. Once per long rest, you can cast one of the following spells: animal friendship, beast bond, speak with animals.

For beast bond and speak with animals, this enchantment lasts for as long as the subject of the spell is within sight or until 30 minutes have passed, whichever expires sooner. You can expend an additional ❤️ to extend the duration of this spell by 15 minutes.

At rank 8, you also gain the ability to cast the speak with plants spell as part of this Secret Art.
