[Profession] The Forager

left-aligned image
The Forager

Over the hills and far away, or right in one's own back yard, the wealth of nature's bounty is everywhere, and no one knows that better than a well-versed forager.

Possessed of a wonderful, and maybe even magical, bond to the land that comes from a deeply harbored respect for life and their environment. Through this, they find that they are naturally adept at finding new and interesting things, as if the land itself is responding to their curiosity.

So what's the difference between a practiced a forager and anyone who decides to go out and grab everything in sight? They are aware of the fragile balances of the ecosystems in which they tread, and because of that, they know exactly how much they can take from it without upsetting that balance, and are thus both masters of their trades and, in a way, a voice for the natural world.

Forager Media

right-aligned image
A forager's primary media revolves around what they prefer to forage, hunt or fish, whereas their secondary media is either something they use in some way to track their intended targets or, if their primary foraging target isn't available where they are, they can reliably find their secondary target instead. Choose a primary and a secondary media from the following:

MediaExamples
Earthenware

Fishing

Game

Herbalism

Monsters

Salvage

Tiny Creatures

Wild Edibles

Wood
dirt, clay, metals, muds, sands and stone

freshwater and saltwater fish, shellfish, molluscs, turtles

large game, small game, rodents

herbs and spices, flowers, fungi

constructs, draconic, elementals, magical beasts

ruined bits, machine parts, metal fixtures

insects, snakes, earthworms

berries, nuts, and wild vegetables

logwood, timber, brush, firewood

Examples: A bug collector might choose Tiny Creatures as their primary focus, and Wood as their secondary focus, whereas a miner might pick Earthenware as their primary, but might take small game so they can train animals to warn them of noxious fumes underground that are imperceptible to them. Meanwhile, a travel guide might choose two skills that help them survive more easily, like Wild Edibles as a primary and Herbalism as a secondary, while a fisherman might pick Fishing as a primary and Tiny Creatures for bait collecting.

Tools of the Trade

If you select Forager as your first Epicurean class, you automatically gain proficiency with a set of tools that best suit your chosen profession. Some examples might include an Herbalism kit for someone with either Herbalism or Wild Edibles or a set of Tinker's tools for someone with the Salvaging media. Alternatively, if none of the usual tool kits match, make up your own! Perhaps your Wood media requires the use of Lumberjacks tools! Just remember to define what's in them!

Stamina
Epicurean Foragers use Stamina during their Expeditions. Setting off on an Expedition costs 1 Stamina, and an additional point of Stamina is spent for every 2 hours that the Expedition lasts. In some cases, too, Threads may require an expenditure of Stamina as well.

In addition, Foragers can craft things related to their profession or medias, following the usual rules for Artisan crafting. Stamina expenditures vary according to the project's Difficulty Level as usual.
Multiclassing

In order to multiclass into an Epicurean Forager, the following prerequisites need to be fulfilled:
  • You must have proficiency with one tool related to your chosen profession within the Forager class (see Tools of the Trade for this class).
  • You must have assisted someone in going to look for materials in nature and been successful three times. Otherwise, you must have studied an outdoor survival manual or been trained by an expert in your field.
  • You must take the time and update your registration at the Adventurer's Critique.
  • At the time of registration, you must have someone who does not belong to your guild present that can vouch for the quality of your skill or wares. Alternatively, you can present a collection of your wares to the Critique for review, but you must have gathered them all yourself.

Forager Secret Arts

All Things Great and SmallAll Things Great and Small

Prerequisites: Forager Rank 1

After traveling to a new Locale, you can spend 🍀 to become Attuned to that Locale. While you are Attuned, you can sense living things within 30 feet of your person and can reliably track them as long as they stay within that radius. You know their size, shape, can immediately identify any creature you've seen before by any clues it leaves behind. You can also spot signs of recent growth, animal movements, and clues when something is new or out of place within your radius without making a Survival check.

Backpack MasteryBackpack Mastery

Prerequisites: Forager Rank 3

You learn the seemingly lost art of managing and organizing the space in your backpack. By spending half an hour folding, squishing, and strategically placing items, you reduce the weight of any items stored in your backpack by half, provided they are small enough to fit. This does not apply to items you have tied, strapped, or otherwise affixed to the outside of your pack.

Chum the WaterChum the Water

Prerequisites: Forager Rank 1, Fishing Media

By spending 3 portions of any kind of bait, you can chum the water in an area in which you're fishing. Doing so causes all fish on the current map to move 1d6 squares closer to your location, and reduces the chance that a fish might move during a re-cast by 10%. The process of chumming the water takes 1 hour, and this effect lasts for 3 hours thereafter.

Forager's StashForager's Stash

Prerequisites: Forager Rank 1

You can find or make a temporary shelter to stash any excess resources that you forage while on an Expedition. If you don't return within a week's time to claim the remaining resources, however, the stash and any resources inside are reclaimed by nature. You can only have one stash per Locale, and you can always find your stash, even if you haven't fully explored the Locale.
