Deciding not to toss anymore wood onto the ensuing conflagration for the moment, Ranavan takes a few steps forward and gently tugs Rolen backwards out of the way before he gets his silly arse in trouble. Rahadin appeared to have a high opinion of himself and his master and some arcane knack to back them up. Perhaps it was best to play along for now - and indeed Talsim spoke up sensibly. Keeping an arm on Rolen's shoulder Ranavan shrewdly awaited developments.

Seeing Terrefan pull Rolen back, Rahadin bursts into haughty laughter. “How delightful! The elf needs restraining like some rabid dog! Go on, back to your master, child.”.

Surprised at Talsim’s appearance, Rahadin stares down with curiosity at the halfing. “What have we here? Do the others keep you as their pet?”. His mouth stretches into the same, thin, malicious smile. “It is not a matter of my master winning, so much as it is you proving your worth.”. He sighs disappointedly. “If, however, you are so timid and frightful that you cannot proceed without me guiding you like some dumb ox, then know this.” He places his hood back over his head, leaving only his paper cut of a mouth visible in the plaid, magical light. “This house holds secrets, this basement you have been tasked with may not be all that you assume it to be. Remember the words of the children, not all they said was a trick.” He turns his back to the group and begins to walk off into the mists that still surround the house. “I believe that should be sufficient for now. We will talk again should you manage to succeed.”

Just before the elf disappears into the mist, Rolen yells out in Elvish: "I have marked you, Rahadin of von Zarovich -ready yourself for death!"

Alas, vengeance will have to wait until the group gets out of this caged house. Rolen turns to Jarn and Terrefan. "What did he mean about the children? What exactly did they tell you about this house?"

"They didn't say anything, really. Just the tales they spun about being afraid of the monster, their parents being away on business. Oh, the attic - something about the basement can be accessed from the attic. Which doesn't make sense. You were here though - you heard as much as I did."

Ranavan is hard pressed to keep his temper in the face of Rolen's conspicuous bravado, which is like putting up brightly painted banners announcing that they should all be kept an eye on lest they conspire upon clever schemes to bring Rahadin down a peg. Not that Rahadin would be likely to give them an opportunity; but that was hardly the point. His face creased in annoyance an perplexity.

"We could go to the attic. It might be what we're expected to do, and that might mean a trap. We're already in the trap, though."

He shrugged, still unsure of the game and it's rules, wondering how best to play. He waved his light emitting blade around vaguely while he thought.

"Well, the one advantage of knowing you're trapped is that you already know to be careful when picking up the cheese."

Rolen picks up the loosed arrow that lays on the ground next to the iron bars. "Now, who else wants to go upstairs to the supposed basement in the attic?"

Taking a step back to lean against the wall with a sigh, Talsim lets a small smirk cross his face about the little information he had managed to extract from the worming figure who was now disappearing into the mist. A small victory, but a victory none-the-less. When Rolen asks where the group would like to go, Talsim looks up again. "He didn't seem to be lying about the children speaking truths. Besides, I think we'd do best starting at the top and working our way down. My vote goes to the attic."

Rolen walks back to the main hallway and begins to climb up the marble staircase in the centre, with the others close behind. Reaching the first floor, he briefly scans the landing for anything out of the ordinary for a town house (at least, more out of the ordinary than magical cages and disappearing children) before climbing the next set of stairs to the second floor, where the door to the attic should be.

The empty prison death house was creepy, and Ranavan decided to deal with the situation by confronting it head on, and loudly. He took the step two at a time up to the second floor, and then inhaled deeply before announcing loudly to anyone or anything that might be present.

"Hello! Anyone there!"

He scanned around looking for interesting or forbidding doorways, while listening out for a response either in verbal form or in the form of something hideous coming to attack them in response.

The footfalls of the party echo solemnly as they climb the curving, marble staircase. The solitary sound seeming to reaffirm their isolation in this bizarre, eldritch prison of a house. Upon reaching the first floor, Rolen scans the area but sees nothing out the ordinary save for four, parallel facing suits of armour, each clutching a spear and replete with a visored helm that seems to be shaped like a wolf’s head. The landing is, as with the ground floor, well maintained and clean; for all appearances seeming only recently abandoned. Set into the northern wall is a large, wood-framed portrait of a family; a mother and father stand sternly proud next to two smiling children who are clearly recognisable as Rose and Thorn. In the father’s arms is a swaddled babe; presumably Marek. Seeing nothing of particular note, the party advances up the stairs towards the second floor.

What immediately strikes the group as they reach the upper floor, is the sudden deterioration in the state of the house. Here, the place seems long forgotten; cobwebs and dust litter every surface and the floorboards creak distressingly with age as the party steps away from the staircase. Ranavan’s cry goes unanswered.

To the east of the party is a set of large, oaken doors, similar to grandeur to those on the ground floor. To the west, a much humbler, solitary door stands – a tarnished brass knob set in its centre. There is no obvious entrance to the attic, but perhaps it is behind one of these doors?

Rolen thinks for a second. The large double doors are the most noticeable way to go, but if the group is looking for an attic, then surely that would be more out of the way, behind the single door?

Rolen carefully tries the doorknob, slowly opening the western door.

Peering over Rolen's shoulder, Ranavan hops impatiently form foot to foot. The emptiness and quiet is making him jumpier than a hostile creature would have.

"Wassit? Wasthere? Anything there?"

He holds his light emitting dagger, the better to see by if the room should be in gloom.

Light CantripLight cantrip is limited in duration but it's a cantrip so I assume I'm just casting whenever I need.
