EX. you roll 3 d10 plus a max hit die for being a level 4 fighter. Rolling you get, 3,5,10. So you change the 3 to a 5 for a final roll of 5,5,10 and a max hit die for 30 hitpoints. This way you should have more then average.

Name: Lyssa Caldwell

It was a deep Winter, one of the deepest and coldest in all living Human memory when Lyssa was born to the Caldwell family, a minor noble house that had worked for years to rise in power and had gotten a share of it through the usual practices of the nobility--deceit, subtle machinations, overt diplays of power, and more. The Caldwell family was known for its cut-throat heirs and ice sorceress heiresses, and in order to continue the family tradition the boys were taught the ways of assassins and thieves to open any lock and take down any target while the girls were quickly inundated in the national church of Kraen where they were tested and taught at every turn to manifest the sorceress power in their blood. As most families do, the Caldwells have a dark secret that helped them rise to power, though theirs might be far darker than that of others. Deep within the family crypts, hidden from the sun and fresh air lies a being strange and foul who manipulates the family towards success from behind curtained doors and with an unseen hand. Lyssa has only seen this being once, and just its presence filled her with such fear that she ran until her feet could not carry her any farther.

Lyssa, the only girl and second-youngest of her generation has three brothers, each sneakier than the rest. Each seeks to prove himself to their parents that he is the one who should have the right of being bestowed with the family's power. For the most part Lyssa had been kept out of their plots, being vowed and sent off to the church at an early age. There she learned the ways not only of Kraen, but also of the nobility; to never show weakness, since it will be exploited at every turn. To never trust anyone, lest that trust be betrayed and used against you. To care for what you say, and more importantly, how you say it, for saying one thing while meaning another can plant the seeds of doubt that will grow into the bush of enervation from which the fruits of power may be picked.

There, she had a clique of other girls from other noble families who were allied with the Caldwells, though it was obvious that these truces only lasted while it was advantageous for both parties and could dissolve at the drop of a pin. Other girls also formed their own cliques, with much fighting between the different factions. The fiercest fights, though, were Lyssa's feuds with the Bromdun twins, two fair-haired children of her age. They were an oddity, for twins were told to be bad luck, yet the boy had not only been allowed to live, but had also shown such arcane talent that he was allowed to learn how to hone his innate power at the church-school which Lyssa attended.

There were two major highlights during Lyssa's experience at the church; the first was with a boy who was from an adjacent school that trained strong individuals to master the bow, the sword, and the staff. His name was Jadon, and his dark hair and dark eyes captivated Lyssa from the first time she saw him. They soon became friends, and would spend much of their free time together. As their adolescent feelings grew, Lyssa asked him one day if he would promise to wed her when they were both old enough, under the guidance of Kraen, to which Jadon asked for time to think, he from a house of higher position than she. The next day Lyssa passed behind some bushes to while the time away while she waited for his response when she heard him brag to other boys from his school, calling her an empty-headed wench whom around his finger spun. In a rage, Lyssa not only showed herself, but her anger forced more of her magic out than every before, encasing Jadon to the neck in ice and frightening the other boys away with her display of power before passing out from the expenditure. It was a few hours later before she awakened in the church infirmary, and angrily vowed to never let her emotions lead her again.

The second was during her last year, shortly before graduation. Lyssa's mother had gifted her with a family heirloom, a magical horn that with a single blow could bring about the snow of deep winter, and she had shown it off to her clique before placing it in her room. During the same night, while she and her roommates slept, Lyssa was awakened to see someone flee from her room. In a panic she quickly rose only to find the magical heirloom gone. The next day came with her in a panic when she saw the Bromdun twins whispering to themselves. Upon seeing her, they let out a vicious laugh and taunted her about her missing artifact, despite the fact that she had not told anyone of its disappearance. Knowing she could not prove anything, Lyssa kept quiet about the matter and lied to her mother that she had hid the horn away.

Now two years after leaving the Church, Lyssa attempts as best as she can to fulfill the two intertwined goals; to recover the magical horn, and to advance her family in power so that one day they might rule the City-State in which they live. She is knowledgeable about her own family, and most of the other noble families, but there is one thing she knows naught of--that elvish blood runs through her veins, and those of her family. That, is the reason that their magic is diverse, yet comes less quickly into true power compared to the progeny of other families. Both a strength and a weakness, this dreaded secret could ruin the house if it ever came out into the open, what with the stance the church has on non-humans. The only silver lining to this secret is that only the creature in the crypt is said to know the terrible secret.

 

On the tall end of the spectrum for a woman of her social standing, Lyssa nevertheless stands perhaps half a head shorter than many of the men that frequent her surroundings. She holds herself with an air of frosty dignity with a touch of disdain depending with whom she speaks. Her flawless face shows no blemish of the disease or illness that ofttimes mars the visage of those in the lower class, while her high cheekbones and calculated gestures show the poise of nobility.

While she can often be seen wearing the ceremonial armor of the lower priestesses of Kraen while travelling, Lyssa prefers the noble's clothes which she takes out for special occasions adorned in glittering gems of grey, blue, and green as befits her House. While her ceremonial armor is adorned with the symbol of Kraen, she usually carries a holy symbol upon which rests his sign as well as well as a trio of daggers, one at each hip and a third hidden within her boots. On her back rests the scythe, the favored weapon of Kraen, used to symbolically cleave the pure from the impure and remove the wheat from the chaff.

Finally, when travelling she carries a large backpack full of an assortment of various travel goods including her travel journal, ink pots, pen, chalk, and other miscellaneous necessities that might become necessary at a moment's notice, and an adventurer's sash rests across her torso, its bandoleer full of various scrolls and other magical goods needed to work the magics of Kraen.

 

Attempt to stay at a distance from foes and use Frost Ray if none are close and Color Spray if they close distance.

Providence was trained from an early age as one of the gunslinging lawmen that upheld the rule of Sheriff Sturm. The sheriff kept the people of Pantea inline through fear. He ruled with an iron fist and anyone who crossed him met with a swift death at the hands of his gunslingers.

Pantea is a land so very far from any other civilized world on an island that is rarely visited by outsiders. To those from the main continent it is only spoken of as if it were some mythological place and referred to as the land on the edge of the earth since it is so far south. It is rumored that firearms and gunpowder were originally developed here, but no one can confirm this. But one thing was for sure, the gunslingers that came from this place were the best in the world.

But eventually the people united and rebelled against the Sheriff and even with his small army of gunslingers he was unable to defeat the uprising. So the Sheriff sought the outside assistance of a mysterious stranger that the gunslingers dubbed “the man in black”.

The man in black was a dark sorcerer that looked like a man, but according to the legends he was ancient. He would not share his plan on how to crush the rebellion with the gunslingers, but he provided them and the sheriff with something he referred to as an antidote, which they all including Providence drank.

When night fell a great pestilence struck the people of Pantea, by the time the sun arose everyone who had not partaken in the antidote had died a miserable and painful death.

Providence was horrified by this and confronted the Sheriff, but the Sheriff was unsympathetic to the people and feared the man in black so he did nothing. Providence stricken with guilt at the part he played and realizing that he had done wrong his whole life struck out against the Sheriff. It was a shoot out for the ages, but in the end Providence though badly wounded had killed them all, more than a dozen deadly men including the Sheriff had fallen to his revolvers. The only one that remained was the man in black.

The man in black fled from Pantea and boarded a ship towards the civilized world. Providence was unable to give chase as he had been badly wounded and was unable to walk, though he crawled for days until he found a lone rowboat. He was so hellbent on revenge that against his better judgment he took to the ocean on the tiny boat even though he was still bleeding and had no provisions.

He paddled for several days, until thirst, his injuries and the blaring sun finally sent him into unconsciousness. He awoke in a land he was unfamiliar with and was nursed back to health by a girl named Emma and her brother Paul. They were the first kind people he had ever met and they helped him without wanting anything in return. This was a completely new experience for Providence and he was heartened by their kindness.

As soon as his strength had returned he hitched a ride with a merchant who had claimed to see the man in black during his travels. Providence hitched a ride with him and headed north still on the trail burning with vengeance.

Grace can often be seen smiling as she goes about her business with a calm and mild-mannered demeanour. Polite, respectful and overall a kind person, she is willing to offer her help to almost anyone who needs it. While her face may often seem hard and harsh, it softens easily when dealing with people. Dressed pragmatically, she prefers to keep her hair in a ponytail and wears practical clothing over flashy accessories. She doesn't carry any weapons with her, asides from a small dagger on her belt which she uses as a tool. Nevertheless, she appears confident enough in the face of danger, and will not back down from an unavoidable fight.

 

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character.

• Grace was part of the Order of the Clairvoyant Mind monastic order dedicated to self-improvement.
• She is an orphan, taken in by the order at an early age. She considers the monastery to be her family, though, and does not think much about her parents.
• She was never the most talented adherent in the monastery, though she did her best. This left her with a fairly humble, but still determined, outlook on life.
• Grace has a very kind heart. She enjoys helping people, no matter who they are. This, combined with her general lack of experience with the world, might make her fairly naïve.
• Once Grace received the invitation, the order quickly but quietly set her on her way, without answering any questions as to why the invitation was sent. Grace herself does not know why she was sent it, but went along with it anyway.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

• Hone her skills, perfect her art. A very open-ended goal, and while she doesn't lack confidence when needed, she still seeks to better herself, and that drives her towards situations that might improve and test her skills.
• As a player, it might be nice to have Grace learn something about her parents, and deal with the issue of loyalty to either her biological parents, or the order she grew up with. The parents don't need to be important people in the setting, but the reason why Grace was taken to the monastery should be exapnded upon.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet.

• Grace accidentally killed another initiate when they were training. Her mind blade went out of control for a brief moment, and while trying to restrain the blade, her training companion was forced to retreat and ended up backing down a cliff. She never told anyone the reason why it happened, and still feels responsible for his death.
• (unknown) In truth, the order lied to her. Grace is not an orphan, but was taken away against the will of her parents.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile.

• Nathaniel and Neira were two sibling acolytes of roughly the same age as Grace in the monastery. They arrived at the same time as Grace, and were friends throughout their time. Nathaniel often got the trio into trouble with his adventurous and carefree attitude, while Neira was often the one to bail the others out, one way or another. Both siblings remained behind in the monastery, and Grace has not heard of them after leaving.
• Atraja, one of the head monks of the order, had always kept a watchful eye on Grace. For reasons unknown to Grace, he never liked her and was constantly on the watch for any transgressions she may or may not have committed. However, being only one of the head monks, he was occasionally stopped by the more objective monks. However, he was a constant thorn during Grace's life in the monastery.

Step 5: Describe three memories that your character has. They don’t have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

• Her early initiate days were often long and arduous, dealing with trivial tasks that often felt like they had no purpose. Retrospectively, the teachings did make sense, and Grace respects the self-discipline that came with them.
• Spending a whole day with Neira as they searched for Nathaniel in the monastery before the monks realized he was gone. Eventually he was found on one of the rooftops, eating an apple casually and wondering what the fuss was about. In the end the monks did find out that Nathaniel had left the monastery's boundaries without permission, and all three of them were punished for not being honest with the monks.
• The day she left the monastery. She felt a bit saddened, yet hopeful for the future. The predictable routines of the monastery would be replaced with an uncertain future, and that made her excited, yet slightly unsure. Packed with only a few essentials and some protective gear, the moment she stepped out of the monastery's doors, they closed behind her. A hopeful smile on her face, she set out into the rest of the world.

 

Get in between her allies and enemies and attempt to trip enemies if possible. If not, two handed power attack with mind blade while using Combat Expertise for at least a +1 bonus.

Desmond

 

Age: 18
Appearance: Desmond is pallid, his eyes are milky, clouded from years of looking at almost nothing but darkness. His hair is black, as if awash in that selfsame shade, occasionally looking as though flecked with white. He dresses in plain clothes, though almost always with a hood up to keep his face hidden. Despite his obvious drawbacks, he's a fairly attractive young man. His features are subdued, and though thin he is not emaciated or gaunt. His voice, when rarely he speaks, is melodious.

 

Desmond was born in a dungeon. His mother had been locked therein because she became pregnant by way of the king, or so the story was told around the dungeon. She had died in labor and because he was supposedly a royal bastard and had a fair claim to the throne, he was kept in the dungeon as well. At first they had him in a crib, in a warmer part of it that he might not die; you never knew a royal child might come in useful. From the youngest ages, he learned nothing but what he heard, and learned from other prisoners. He was fed, and for the longest time knew nothing but suffering. From his small square window, barred though it was, he saw the skies and all the lights which traversed them... until he could no longer see beyond the walls which held him. The skies were only a memory any more, he saw them when he dreamed and when he prayed to the gods whom he was told were merciful.

Skin Color: A gray color that shines and reflects bright light, with odd, small bits of brightly colored raw crystal sticking out of his skin in some places. Those crystals mostly leave his face and hands alone however.

Eye color: Brilliant blue, fitting his Oread heritage as they glow similarly to gemstones.

I like the background concept Actana used from seeing it, so i'll try it out.

 

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character.

• He was taken on by a sheltered mountain convent when he was just born, as one of the monks found him laying on one of the mountain paths. To date, neither him nor any of the monks know how he ended up there.
• His convent was all about level-headedness and stoicism, the monks seldomly if at all talked to each other, trying to find purity in their silence and training.
• That lifetime of silence combined with his heritage made him an incredibly stoic and rational person, yet he still cares deeply for some people (like all the monks that joined after him) and even more for animals, especially the weaker ones (both people and animals).
• He devoted his training to grappling and various submission techniques instead of using lethal force. While he is not opposed to killing, he would prefer to not have to resort to it.
• As he was one of the strongest monks in the convent, he went out whenever the higher monks had a task to fulfill outside of the monastery. This led to him finally meeting a few other humans and humanoids in the cities, most of which he regarded as too loud, too brash and too emotional. He did manage to find a few people he got along with, however (see Ties).

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

• Stern wants to find purity as a monk in the art of wrestling, and to truly master the fighting style, being able to solve each and every form of conflict through what he considers the ultimate test of not only strength, but mostly virtue.
• He also harbours a secret, shameful wish to become the leader of the monastery, although he would never voice such a trivial and worldly desire.
• I would like for Stern to overgo some emotional development over the adventure - have him drop a bit of his stoicity, have him find more people he cares about, all that good stuff.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet.

• As already said, for a monk he harbours what he considers shameful worldly desires and sins - he's secretly prideful about his wrestling prowess and has a bit of an affection for ornate gemstones, a fondness he developed when visiting the city and seeing a gem trader.
• If that's sensible and even possible, not too sure - he actually hails from the Elemental Plane of Earth, explaining his sudden showing up in the mountains with a plane portal/plane shift spell gone wrong.

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile.

• Maturion, the first leader of the convent who decided to take him in as a monk despite him not being a human and taught him the way of absolute virtue and purity. Maturion was also the one who saw his potential as a warrior and took it on himself to give the young Oread training lessons. Stern has by now long outlived the old monk, but his lessons resonate in him every day, and he recites his words every morning when he wakes up.
• Grork Heartshaker, an orc mercenary Stern met on one of his first trips to the city. Despite Grork having some definitely evil tendencies, they shared respect for each other's ways, and Stern really appreciated being able to talk to someone who was, for an orc, almost as stoic and quiet as he was. Both of them aren't talkers at all, but in their mutual silent respect, the monk was happy to have found a soul he shared common ground with.
• Boush the Gnome was one of the people that represented everything the Oread didn't like about the city. Being a typically curious gnome who never saw an Oread before, Boush took it on himself to try and coax out as much information as possible about the monk's life, where he came from, and other nosy questions Stern did not care for at all. After having met the gnome several times, and not being able to get him to let off, Stern snapped when he tried to take a sample of one of the small crystals growing out of his skin and threw the curious gnome across the street. Although he did not get punished for his behaviour, the monk atoned silently for snapping the way he did, but he hopes sincerely to never meet the gnome again.
  

Step 5: Describe three memories that your character has. They don’t have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

• He remembers little from his early days, but he does remember he used to harbour silent resentment for the other human children initiates that the convent took in, as they grew up much quicker than him despite being the same age or even younger. His sole satisfaction in these days was that he was still able to beat them in training sessions.
• On one of his early trips away from the mountain, a highwayman tried to rob the seemingly unarmed monk. Stern was able to defend himself easily against the unexperienced man, but when he let him go without any further retribution, the bandit tried to finish the job as soon as he had his back turned. Only his naturally thick skin saved him, and from this day on, the monk was much more cautious about being deceived, and hates dealing with liars.
• His last task of the convent was to help the professor - who had been a long-time correspondent to the leader of the convent, not Stern himself. The leader unfortunately was down with a rather heavy sickness, and could neither attend the funeral himself nor help honor the professor's last wish, but he made certain to send one of his most capable warriors - the Oread monk, who was late to the funeral and only just arrived in the city.

I'm pretty sure my stats are correct, as humans gain a +2 to any single ability score (started dex at 17, raised to 18 at level 4, +2 from human).

About the gold, I'm not sure what you mean, but it might just be me tired. Should I have 1000gp more, or 1000gp less?

That works. If I said your number are off, I forgot to add in the increase in score for level 4. Which may explain a lot of things.

You should have a thousand less gold. The 3 magic items you bought come to 5,000 plus the random small things leaving somewhere less then a thousand unspent gold.
