Do you mind if I switch to monk and you recruit a rogue?

A monk concept is sticking in my head and I think it will be a great contrast to the wizard and drunken warrior type.

Tell me about your idea. I have to admit I am skeptical because, as a whole, I find the idea of an unarmed and unarmored warrior fighting and beating armed and armored warriors and coming out on top almost as farfetched as a sorcerer shooting fire from their fingertips.

What if you allowed it so long as he used a quarterstaff or kama? I too like the idea of a whirling dervish amongst us. It will go good with the ideas I have forming for my Sorcerer who will specialize in summoning/protection.

My idea might be even more far fetched... lol.

As we say in the military... the bottom line up front (BLUF) is:

- Young Man (16 years old) who never knew his parents.
- Grew up in a small compound in the woods (think druids grove w/no magical plants/animals and add a building)
- Was trained to have absolute discipline over his body, to include his tongue.
- Lives by an internal code of Honor that at it's core focuses on respect for self, nature and fellow man.
- Follows the law of the land and believes in order, unless it is considered dishonoarable.
- His Master is two weeks dead, burried under a cairn by my characters own hand.
- His Masters last command was one freeing him to go into the world and find his path.

For the first time in his life he is free, and he has no idea what that means. He has been in to town, but always followed a few steps behind his master and was never allowed to speak without prompt. He has never exercised his free will in any significant way. He is now in town ready to strike out and see the world.

Because he is soo young, he has some naievety and sees the world in clear black and whites. Which will be tested I am sure based on the party that we have. Additionally, the fact that he is only 16 will add a significant mystique to him. A kind of... chosen one aspect. Something that gives you some play later on if you want to include it in a plotline.

Just an idea. We can remove the dimension door ability and replace it with a free feat or 1/day non magical ability.

Cantrips: Are they unlimited castings per day? I noticed that there isn't a limit per day as with other spell levels...

If that is the case, then I've been playing all my magic users the wrong way for a long time.

Rinjo, you're a talented writer. I'll trust you. You can play a monk. Just, keep in mind, we're playing in a "low fantasy" world so try not to get too flashy on me, and if you wanted to use a weapon like a spear or quarterstaff, I'd give you some leeway with abilities like flurry of blows.

Also: There are several interesting archetypes for monks, so be sure to check them out. Link.

1 - Thank you for trusting me. It means a lot.

2 - I realize this is a low fantasy so as it comes time to take things like dimension door... we will have to work soemthing else out.

3 - The easiest way to go VPA if you do not want an unarmed man running around slaying orcs, would be to give a flavor weapon to the monk. Something that doesn't have die damage of it's own. Lets say he takes his masters Katana when he leaves the compound. A weapon he will never leave or upgrade. Something of purely sentimental value...

It follows none of the rules that a normal weapon follows, and functions as if it was his unarmed attack (using monks unarmed damage die... attack bonuses etc.)

So the katana would in essence only exist in the descriptions that I make when making a post. I like this idea as it does make it more realistic and a katana is a unique weapon that likely won't be found anywhere else in the campaign so there would be something mystical about it as he twirls it and slices and dices using the flurry of blows and monks damage die.

Again the weapon would serve only as an RP tool and would have no stats of it's own. That saves us having to create any special weapon rules or make any changes to the system.

1- No worries mate.

2- That's several thousand experience points away, so, that bridge will be crossed then rather than now. Who knows, the game may transform from low to high fantasy by then.

3- I like this idea. I will allow this. While using your 'bound weapon' your Master's Katana, you will deal your unarmed monk damage though it will be slashing as opposed to bludgeoning damage. Which gives you the slight advantage of being able to choose if you want to deal bludgeoning or slashing damage, but, that advantage, is negligble unless you're fighting golems or the undead. So, I'll allow it.

Keep in mind you are only a first level character, so you are not quite 'hot ****', you are faster than most of similar experience but you will encounter many warriors of equal or greater skill in your travels. You can expect a veteran soldier to be a good deal more experienced than you.

Yes. But for someone his age he is hot.

He has no real frame of reference, nor is he incredibly proud either way. He is not looking to peck a fight.

Fair enough, Rinjo.

Aitrus, Pathfinder does not limit cantrips or orisons uses per day. You can cast acid splash every round. The horror.

VPA, I'm making good progress on the map. I think it's going to turn out a bit better than the one I did for Rinjo's game. I've got a few more questions for you:

- How big are the towns? Are they villages, towns, small cities? Is one of them a capital in the region?
- How far from Paston to the next city or town to the south? What is it's name?
- Do you want another map with a different aspect ratio (zoomed-in) on any area?
- How many islands off the coast? How big? Where did you want them? Names? Settlements on them?
